August 1 - rode 11.5 miles for a duration of 00:45:20 (XC Race Warm-Up Practice)
    August 2 - rode 6.95 miles for a duration of 00:35:00 (XC pre-ride lap)
August 3 - rode 21.71 miles for a duration of 1:52:02 (XC race)
    August 5 - rode 8.61 miles for a duration of 47:30
    August 8 - rode 44.02 miles for a duration of 2:48:46
    August 9 - rode 18.7 miles for a duration of 1:09:44

August Totals: 111.49 miles for a duration of 07:58:22

***August Goals = race well in mountain bike races on my calendar for the 3rd, 17th, 24th, and the big "50 miler" on the 31st. That's a lot of mountain bike racing for one month meaning I will have to taper and recover as best as possible this month to pull it off.

Also for you other cyclist doing long rides (metric century’s/century/+) how do you refuel? Do you just have snacks as your ride? (If so what works best for you?) Or do you stop somewhere and have a larger meal? How do you handle breaks?

I find I can go about 4 hours (metric century) on just snacks and 1 or 2 short (<10min) breaks but after that I need a long (45min-1hr) break and a real meal. I also noticed that if I ever let my energy level dip a little low then no mater how long I rest or how much I eat it never really seems to recover.

Great rides you are getting in this month!!!!

Eating early and often to fuel the demands of burning 3 - 5K calories has always been my strategy. Hammer Nutrition products are my favorite, and I like the Perpetuem for the mutli-hour rides if it inolves riding fast/racing. If just tooling along, eating whatever comes along to help fuel the ride helps. Whether it is something you carry, or if you are stopping at convenience stores or whatever to buy a snack. You simply have to be proactive and "stay ahead" of the fuel needs. If you wait until you are losing energy and feeling hungry - it's a battle.

Never a bad idea to carry along a sandwich to chow down mid ride as well (PB&J or turkey are my favorite mid-ride chow downs). One has to find what their own stomach can digest and rely on it. I've had good luck with Perpetuem and mixing it for a 4 hour or 6 hour bottle ride, but others hate the chalky taste.

August 2 - 9.5 miles lots of four wheeler trail riding. Not a fan. Prefer single track
August 3 - 19.5 miles. Steady 10 mile climb. I need to get used to that considering my race has quite a bit of dirt road climbing.
August 4 - 5.6 miles of steep, rocky/technical single track. LOVE.
August 7 - 4.6 miles. Big day because it was my 10 year old's first day on the real trails. :-) Slow ride, lots of coaching for her. Great!!
August 8 - 3.96 miles, steep and constant two mile climb, with fast descend. Late night, after work ride.
August 9 - 19.7 miles of flowly, diverse single track. Missed my time goal by 26 seconds. Lol
Weight lifting with the riding, so recovery is SLOW at best. Been feeling like I am getting sick for a week. Slow, weak rides.

Have not been out on my mountain bike since December, so have decided to get the bike out and get it ready for riding again. As its 11 days into August, I will set a modest 100 miles over 10 days for the rest of this month.

After taking a dive last Sunday, my hands have healed enough to start riding again. Rode yesterday and it was still quite painful, but I think after today, I should be good. Anyway, have a lot of catching up to do. I have put a lot of running miles in the past week though.

I've been commuting to work since July and I do 10 miles a day, 5 days a week. That means 50 miles a week and for August that would be 210 miles. WOW! I never thought I would be at this place. I've lost some weight too, yay!

Cycled around Chiemsee - a lake over here in Bavaria - on Sunday. Apparently it is 55km, but I got terribly lost trying to find the station on the way back, so did an extra few km backwards and forwards. And with cycling to the main station in Munich and back I did about... 80km? on Sunday. Dead slow, since I am hopeless at reading maps (even when going round a lake and it *should* be impossible to get lost) and there were lots of sticks and stones and tree roots waiting to knock you off your bike at every corner. Thoroughly enjoyed it though and rewarded myself with Weissbier and Obatzda - my raison d'être ;-)

Oh my back wheel fell off yesterday, so one of those nasty sticks, stones or tree roots must have got me!

I LOVE cycling. I cycle to work every day, except in the thick of winter when it is really icy - learned my lesson in February when I fell off and the repairs to the bike cost €150.

Good luck to everyone just starting out... and well done to those who are hitting their goals!

Oh I feel for you! I am always falling off my bike. Hope you are back on there soon!

I never cycled around Lake Chiemsee, but I sailed there. I am all envious. No Weissbier and Obatzda here.

I just have a regular cell phone, I am not into gadgets really. But I am into biking. I have a bike computer with cadence, and a heart monitor watch, so I thought I did not need GPS. Oh well, biking is a never ending money drain. .... I am trying to decide if the Garmin Edge 200 will do or if I should buy the 500. I will definitely not go over that.

Thanks for the encouragement. In the colder months I can do longer rides. But now it is already in the nineties at seven in the morning. As I am old and not very fast I cannot ride after 10 a.m. It is simply too hot and I will probably get skin cancer.
  • Weather continues to be miserable. Managed to get out for a quick ride to test some new saddles but I'm well behind for the month

I feel sorry for you. I am having actually a better month weather wise than I expected. Two days in a row it was cloudy in the morning ,we even had some very weak sprinkles of rain, but nothing to prevent me from biking.
Only by 10 a.m. the clouds are burned off and I have to go home as it gets too hot. Let me know if you find a saddle you like. I have a Selle Italia, I am pretty happy with now. First I thought it was too soft for me. Before that I rode a Bontrager saddle which was much harder and I had got used to it. But then it was stolen with my Bianchi attached.

I still think the harder saddle was better and when it gets cooler and I do longer rides I will look into a new saddle also.
