***August Goals = race well in mountain bike races on my calendar for the 3rd, 17th, 24th, and the big "50 miler" on the 31st. That's a lot of mountain bike racing for one month meaning I will have to taper and recover as best as possible this month to pull it off.0 -
Also for you other cyclist doing long rides (metric century’s/century/+) how do you refuel? Do you just have snacks as your ride? (If so what works best for you?) Or do you stop somewhere and have a larger meal? How do you handle breaks?
I find I can go about 4 hours (metric century) on just snacks and 1 or 2 short (<10min) breaks but after that I need a long (45min-1hr) break and a real meal. I also noticed that if I ever let my energy level dip a little low then no mater how long I rest or how much I eat it never really seems to recover.
Great rides you are getting in this month!!!!
Eating early and often to fuel the demands of burning 3 - 5K calories has always been my strategy. Hammer Nutrition products are my favorite, and I like the Perpetuem for the mutli-hour rides if it inolves riding fast/racing. If just tooling along, eating whatever comes along to help fuel the ride helps. Whether it is something you carry, or if you are stopping at convenience stores or whatever to buy a snack. You simply have to be proactive and "stay ahead" of the fuel needs. If you wait until you are losing energy and feeling hungry - it's a battle.
Never a bad idea to carry along a sandwich to chow down mid ride as well (PB&J or turkey are my favorite mid-ride chow downs). One has to find what their own stomach can digest and rely on it. I've had good luck with Perpetuem and mixing it for a 4 hour or 6 hour bottle ride, but others hate the chalky taste.0 -
August 2 - 9.5 miles lots of four wheeler trail riding. Not a fan. Prefer single track
August 3 - 19.5 miles. Steady 10 mile climb. I need to get used to that considering my race has quite a bit of dirt road climbing.
August 4 - 5.6 miles of steep, rocky/technical single track. LOVE.
August 7 - 4.6 miles. Big day because it was my 10 year old's first day on the real trails. :-) Slow ride, lots of coaching for her. Great!!
August 8 - 3.96 miles, steep and constant two mile climb, with fast descend. Late night, after work ride.
August 9 - 19.7 miles of flowly, diverse single track. Missed my time goal by 26 seconds. Lol
Weight lifting with the riding, so recovery is SLOW at best. Been feeling like I am getting sick for a week. Slow, weak rides.0 -

Have not been out on my mountain bike since December, so have decided to get the bike out and get it ready for riding again. As its 11 days into August, I will set a modest 100 miles over 10 days for the rest of this month.0

I've been commuting to work since July and I do 10 miles a day, 5 days a week. That means 50 miles a week and for August that would be 210 miles. WOW! I never thought I would be at this place. I've lost some weight too, yay!0
