"...you are not alone... zzztt-safety is near. Please reach us... safety... food, protection... zzzt... last chance... evacuation.... zzzzzzttttz... shhhhhhhhhhhhhh... only fifteen individuals... shhhhzt... shhhhhh zzzzzt ... Repeat! Last ch -shhh... final evacuation is -sszzzt- October 24th... shhhhhhhhzt...shhhhh... decontamination will leave no survi-shhhhh ztshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhzt."
It started small. You read in the news about riots braking out in small towns and villages. Easily it was dismissed by the hustle and bustle of your daily life. Even the most prepared individuals found limited coverage of the pandemic sweeping the planet due to hushed media coverage. But one day it wasn't in the news anymore, it was out on your street breaking in your front door. The infection spread quickly and ravaged towns, cities and countries.
YOU have survived the initial chaos of the outbreak bunkered down with ten other individuals- these are your team mates. You have also been communicating through signs with a small collection of five individuals located in a nearby building. The fifteen of you must reach safety at a military camp which broadcasted a broken signal over a small radio found within your team's hide. The message claims to offer safety, food, and protection not only from the horde but also from decontamination but only offers enough space for fifteen individuals. You must beat out the other team to survive.
---
II. RULES/GUIDELINES/STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW:
1. NO CHEATING. Seriously people, its not like we're going to hunt you down to find out if your fibbing but if we find out you will be booted from the team. Its pretty lame if you're lying on a little online competition that is aimed to help you. Not to mention you'd only be hurting yourself.
2. WEIGH-INS AND CHECK INS. are Mondays from July 11th to October 24th. So that makes this challenge a 15 week competition which, honestly, is a good amount of time for people to reach their goal weights/goal fitness level/whatever you kids are doing these days. You don't check in one week then you are penalized a pound. If you know you are going away or cannot reply one week please notify your captain of the week or whatever and we'll make sure you'll be excepted. If you go two weeks without a notification sent to a captain then you will be booted off the team.
4. ACCEPTING/NOT ACCEPTING NEW INDIVIDUALS. When the teams reach 15 members each we close the teams. If someone is booted off the team they will be played out to either be dead or zombified in the scenario then we will be more than happy to open up and accept a new member or someone from the waiting list into the spot.
5. GRADING. Seeing as we want this to be fair for all individuals the teams will be graded in a little unusual manner. Members will go off of their own weight loss percentage (so the weight they have lost from their total weight will be added into the teams... er... fat pot). This will account for 50% of the total team's grade. The other 50% will come from the physical challenges (remember people we are preparing for the zombie apocalypse) where each person is able to gain 10 points each week by doing the challenge.
6. CHATTING ON TEAM/MAIN THREADS. Please do so! Make friends. Build a support system. Besides chopping/shooting off imaginary zombie heads that's the fun of this thing. This is not some roleplaying game but this isn't intended to only be something where you talk about zombies either (although always welcome!).
7. CHALLENGES. Our challenges are physical and will last over a weeks period of time and on Monday weigh-ins members must post their challenge results as well. Reporting your progress through out the week is highly encouraged but not required (this might change as time goes on). I'm also currently tossing around the idea of giving a few point bonuses to teams who complete the physical challenges the fastest as a whole. Also we are hoping to make it so challenges will be both a strength challenge for the week and a cardio challenge seeing as both are very important. If you find a challenge to be too easy or too difficult please contact your captain or myself and we can try to modify it to better suit your abilities. As time goes on we will be making the challenges more difficult.
8. WANNA MAKE THIS BETTER? Please, if you guys have any ideas how to make this even better let us know. We might not take your idea but we will definitely love to have some input. I want this to be awesome for you guys and I'm just getting it off the ground so any ideas/tips/etc are more than welcome and greatly appreciated. =]

-
Word isn't working for me at the moment so please excuse any spelling mistakes, grammar mistakes and such because I'm not a writer lol. Its a bit long as an intro but it is to set the mood, other challenge posts will have more gore, be more exciting and much shorter unless you guys dig it. [I would like to go shorter though and not have it as story-e and much more like do ____ to survive but eh, figured this can be wordy as the first one]. I also shifted it a little because I began to think about it... I wouldn't save anyone. So I just threw all fifteen individuals into the same room instead of having half of them in one place and another half in another. Hope you kiddies don't mind.
DON'T FEEL OBLIGATED TO READ 'THE STORY'
----
THE STORY --
Just under a month ago you had heard the first little bits of broken rumors of muggings and people being assaulted. It didn't take long for the rumors to evolve into riots in small villages and towns but media coverage was severely limited. Everything was hushed and because of that it was easily dismissed with the hustle and bustle of your daily life. Local news stations began to subtly warn citizens to stay indoors around dusk and after dark, to keep their windows and doors locked and to avoid people behaving strangely in the area. Eventually it shifted to avoiding those you even knew on the street. Then slowly the media began to try and dismiss the precautions as packs of wild dogs that had moved into the area suspected of carrying rabies and that all individuals behaving 'strangely' should be sent to the near by hospital. Except there were no dogs on the streets. Most of the animals you encountered in your daily life began to behave strangely. Even the wild birds in the area no longer sang or fluttered about merrily instead they watched almost uneasily from above. People even began to behave differently as well. Some individuals seemed to grow pale and sick as they tried to press on with their daily lives, others just up and disappeared while missing posters fluttered on telephone poles and the occasional street corner, even a very small percentage of people seemed to be shunning away from society and refused to speak to anyone while the majority of others, such as yourself, continued on with daily comings and goings you were accustomed to. Little did you know.
About seven days ago the news began to shift to a darker tone rather than just simply dogs and muggings. Riots were breaking out in cities nearby, police sirens sounded at all hours of the day and night. But then one day it wasn't in the news anymore, it was out on your street breaking in your front door...

JULY 11TH
The crackling of the radio while someone attempted to tune in a channel helped dull the sound of a girl sobbing in the corner. How you ended up here in this room amongst these people trapped watching the world around you being ripped apart seemed nothing more than a blur. All fifteen of you were up trapped on the 10th story of a hotel in a large storage room with only one window that provided your only light and view looking out over the parking lot and over the city. You could see the ghouls everywhere. Screams of those not yet dead echoed through the city as the monsters ravaged them. A car's siren sounded in the distance no doubt from one of the creatures bumping into it. Occasionally their dull moans caught the wind and were carried up towards you, the sound sending shivers down your spine.
Occasionally you'd see a living person dart across some lawn or between buildings but none seemed to survive through the city for long. The only other sign of life you saw was a building a few miles over which shined brilliantly with flickering lights as if lit up from the inside. There had to be someone there because every night it was plugged in again and every day a large bed sheet dropped from the balcony. Surely the sheet had words written on it except, unfortunately, the distance made it impossible to decipher. Other than the mysterious lights in the distance the only other sign of life had been the radio which now was mainly static. A day ago the radio was still airing one broadcast. A man claimed he was locked in there and was surrounded. Despite his desperation it was at least comforting to know that you and these people were not the the last people not being ravaged by these ghouls. Well, until a few hours ago when the man's ramblings to himself and his listeners were interrupted by a moan and cry. One of the other members of the party changed the channel before you could hear anymore.
Suddenly you all had heard the voice and they attempted to tune back into the channel. The sobbing subsided and all listened. "...you are not alone... zzztt-safety is near. Please reach us... safety... food, protection... zzzt... last chance... evacuation.... zzzzzzttttz... shhhhhhhhhhhhhh... only ten individuals... shhhhzt... shhhhhh zzzzzt ... Repeat! Last ch -shhh... final evacuation is -sszzzt- October 24th... shhhhhhhhzt...shhhhh... decontamination will leave no survi-shhhhh ztshhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhzt."
Suddenly then the room erupted into conversation.
"No survivors!" someone cried.
"We can't go out there!" Shouted another.
Another collection of individuals near the window stated how it would be the only option.
"Its either stay here and die or leave and have a fighting chance!" Those words echoed through the room and everyone fell silent. Everyone knew nobody would be looking for them so the only option was to look for somebody else.
"We should find the others," a woman said and pointed out across the room to the window towards the flickering room a building away.
"No!" Snapped someone and the room erupted again into conversation.
"We can't just leave them to die."
"Everyone is dead already!" Then someone stepped up calmly and stated "There is a hunting store a couple blocks past that building, we could at least use the weapons and see if there is anyone." Murmurs continued but everyone knew that the storage room would offer little for weaponry and that that location would need to be visited regardless of if the people above would be saved or not.
After about an hour of discussion it was settled the group would leave at first light.

THE CHALLENGE --- JULY 12TH
Alright guys, it took me long enough to come up with this little intro/back story. Here is our first challenge! Its pretty basic since all you're really doing is leaving your building and we don't know everyone's fitness level yet. Hopefully won't be too difficult for everyone so we can do fun stuff next round. So the challenge today is to climb stairs. Not the most exciting but your team is leaving your building and since this is a challenge I added a couple more steps. I figured since this is our first challenge we'll still go easy though and shoot for 300 stairs per day which results in 1800 per week (with a days break seeing as this is the first week). I initially wanted to do 400-500 flights with a couple miles thrown in there but we'll save that for a later date =] Everyone should have access to some form of stair/stair climber/flight of stairs/step up stair thing/etc and if not please contact me or mrtentaclenun.
Remember you don't have to do them all at once that day but completing your weekly stair amount faster than other makes your team look better and might just earn you bonus points. If someone does the most stairs and goes above and beyond the other survivors in the challenge then they will earn their team extra points on the challenge department!
Give me some feedback about what you guys think for challenges and how I tried to set up the scenario. I'm expecting things to get better later on once the chaos of the first week goes away. Zombie killing will begin once we begin strength challenges next week =3
WEEK 1 // ESCAPE THE BUILDING [ STAIR CHALLENGE 1 ]

Total 1800/00 -
Sorry guys, I'll throw you up on the waiting list though. Mmiiaa I'll chat with you about this over personal messages.
Yeah, I wanna go way less wordy with the next one and not so story-like. Just figured since its the first one I've got to and I'm a little burnt out from being on the computer trying to get this rolling so it reads like crap. Shoot me ideas guys on what you all want for the challenge, how you want the scenarios presented to you and yada yada.0 -
WOW Im excited to be included cant wait to get started. My only problem is stair access? xxx0
-
Do you have like a raised step? Even just one repeatedly can help. Or even just one step in your house? Apartment steps? I like doing the step ups (like in those cheesy 80s and 90s work out videos) since I can chill and watch TV while doing it (probably gonna watch 28 days later). If you don't have any steps or stair access then personal message me and we'll figure out an alternative. =]0
-
Right-O! I am on it. I will be using our awkwardly small stairs. They will do!
The only thing being I am on odd New Zealand time where it's already nearly the end of Tuesday. I guess I'll just work on the premise that I am a day ahead and start this Wednesday.0 -
I know this sounds silly but I think we have one at our front door but I cant be sure - will check when I get home tonight haha x0
-
Yep, I, too, am a day ahead. I'll start tomorrow.
Stairs?! Oh, boy am I in luck! I live on the 11th floor of my building. I've been meaning to take the stairs, but at the end of the day, I'm just so bloody tired. (Plus we've been encouraged at work to take the stairs, too.) This is a great challenge.
So, just want to be sure I understand. Am I counting individual stairs or flights of stairs? Do we only count on the way up, or do we include on the way down, too?
Also, I found this the other day. It's from a Canadian government site. You can put in your weight and the amount of time you spent climbing to get a calorie count. (I've been trying to figure out how to add it to mfp, so if someone knows how that would be awesome.) Here's the link: http://stairway.phac-aspc.gc.ca/calcalc.aro
Lastly, I LOVED the story format and certainly wouldn't mind reading the updated story like that next week. I was hoping this challenge /game would be like this. I think you just created a new breed of game: mofrpg (the f = fitness)
All that to say that, AWESOME WORK. I'm really loving it.
Oh, and TEAM 1 is so gonna take the prize. Just sayin'

Yeah, I was wondering about walking downstairs too. Thanks for that link, it'll help me out a ton.
But, uhhh ... Team Two is gonna kick *kitten*.0 -
Does falling down a flight of stairs count?0

Dear Stair Stepper at the gym,
I know last week I fell on you. You completely embarrassed me and made me bleed all over myself. I had to get the help from a personal trainer and bandages. Everyone stared at me. You ruined my white sock.
But it's on. You're going to take me up 1800 stairs whether you like it or not.
Love,

P.S how is everyone putting this down in their exercise journal?0 -
Alright team Explosives! We've got this. I've got enough liquor bottles in my kitchen to make a ton of molotov cocktails!
And stairs? Stairs are easy. Gotta get outta this building somehow, right? Bring it.0 -
P.S how is everyone putting this down in their exercise journal?
For this challenge you can either log it under Stair-treadmill ergometer, general , or there is a running up stairs exercise listed as well. I guess it depends on your speed.0
