Yup I'm fat and you know what? You can shout it from the rooftops for all I care but if you dare to call me big boned I'll knock you out!:noway:0

Preach It! lol. Accepting that I was fat is what got me to finally lose weight. I've never done anything better for myself

Adipose tissue is more of a "geeked" term. And technically you dont get "rid" of it, you use the solidified energy stored in those cells and shrink them.
Geeks are awesome. And I mean that, truly.0 -
I LOVE the look on people's faces when you call yourself fat in front of them. It's always "no, you're not!" "no, actually, I definitely am" It is only recently I have been able to say that and believe it, because I have now accepted that I am, and have been for a very long while, extremely fat, so now I'm changing it0

Interesting post...I haven't read through the 6+ pages of comments but as far as the original post is concerned, it reminded me of another thread that was active yesterday I think that had to do with the media or something encouraging morbidly obese people to embrace their beauty. You're beautiful just the way you are, you don't have to lose weight. Something like that.
Personally I think as I've lost weight I've settled into a pretty healthy self-image. Yeah, I'm still fat. I'm working on it just like I have been for the past year & a half, though, & I can live with still being fat since I get less & less fat all along the way. But I do appreciate the positive changes I've seen in my body after losing as much weight as I have. I think the key is being realistic about where you are, doing what you can about it, & accepting that as "good enough."0 -
overweight = fat
obese = fatter
morbid obese = fattest
Woo, I'm fattest... Did I win?0 -
Hell, I've pretty much been fat since elementary school. Not sure I blame myself for getting fat at that age, but I fully take the blame for not seriously doing anything about it until I was in my 30's (and then again when I dropped the ball again until now that I'm 40).
I got over having a problem being called fat in middle school because I could care less about the opinions of those kids who called me fat. Maybe it would have been motivation if my friends called me fat -- or maybe I'd've had less friends.
I feel bad nowadays for the parents whose kids look at me and say "You're fat." The parents usually look aghast like their child has committed some huge faux paux. I just say, "Yes, I am.". And sometimes add "But it's usually not nice to say that."0 -
The first step to recovery is admitting you have a problem. Yes that's stolen from elsewhere but it kind of applies here. I never really wanted to admit to myself that I was fat. I was just bigger, heavy, fluffy, whatever. And no one ever told me I was fat. Now I face the facts. I am F-A-T. Morbidly obese to be technical about it.
Only after I was able to say that was I really able to start losing weight. So I'm still fat, but at least I'm trying to do something about it.0 -

This. ^^^I know I'm fat, and it's my fault that I am, I was in the Army I knew how to stay fit. Though I do love it when I get asked if I'm pregnant, and I have to reply "no I'm just fat" they are so scared that they offended me. I will tell the truth, it does hurt but I know whta I am, and why I am this way.
I do exactly the same thing. "Nope, just fat." Completely flummoxes people.
Another favorite saying: "I did not achieve my girlish figure by depriving myself."
Am I depriving myself to lose weight? Um... yeah. That's okay. I needed some deprivation in my life. Of calories, that is. And crap. Less crap is a good thing.0 -
I think Morbidly Obese and Obesity are words that I dislike the most. It makes it sound like its a disorder or disease and somewhat taking away from what it truly is(I am not talking about people that have medical conditions like thyroid issues).
Our society has the tendency to make things sound like it was something you had no control over. Naming it something scientific and or disease related I think deflates it a bit.
The word FAT is something that is synonymous with well being fat and to me it has more of a bite. No one is fat because they have a medical condition, they are fat because they are fat.
I understand your point of view on this. But speaking as a member of the medical profession, I can tell you that obesity IS a disease state. One that, most of the time, you create for yourself, but that doesn't change the fact that once you've multiplied your fat cells and filled them with lipids, it becomes a medical problem. Having too much fat around mucks up all kinds of hormone pathways in your body. Thus the loss of normal satiety reflex, for example. There's also the liver inflammation due to deposits of fat in the liver, the slow destruction of the body's ability to respond to insulin properly (ushering in Type 2 diabetes), the cholesterol-crusted fat deposits in blood vessels all over the body (ushering in heart disease and strokes), the list goes on.
We are NOT talking about just a cosmetic unpleasantness here.
The good news is that every fat person can DO something about it.0 -

Thanks for that post; it really hits home for my morbidly obese, type 2 diabetes, FAT self! The good news is I am doing something about it and will continue until I get to a proper weight.0 -

I don't think you want to. Diabetes and heart disease are pretty sucky prizes. :laugh:0 -
Yep, I'm a right fat ba$tard, a bat floater, a salad dodger... and I love not being treated with kid gloves. Brilliant post. The sooner we all accept we're fatties, the sooner we'll not be any more.0

Ok. I disagree (there has to be one, lol)
(Here comes the geek) We are not fat. Fat is the substance that causes us to be Overweight or Obese,
I have never heard any medical expert call me fat,,,, obese yes, fat never,
Fat is the substance that we are trying to get rid of to not be overweight,

@morgori: I'm glad to be of help, and SO IMPRESSED at your 41-lb loss (so far) and your determined, can-do attitude! Before you know it, you may be a non-diabetic! :O0

For some reason this whole posts makes me picture working out to Weird Al's "I'm Fat" based on Michael Jackson's "I'm Bad." I think I just might go find that song and dance around my living room to it. (^_^)
Somewhat off-topic, but did anyone else think of this immediately too?0 -

Yeah, I agree.
I know it is a disease when it reaches that level but I think the problem I have with it is the use of the word as a descriptor. I think it is stronger to say "Mike Yax is a fat person to the level of morbid obesity." Rather than "Mike Yax is a morbidly obese." I don't know where I am going with it but I think using the adjective of fat over identifying it by the medical term simply has more punch.
One of my big motivators was when my favorite Southern Belle Nurse Practitioner told me I had a fatty liver, I asked how did that happen and she said very bluntly "because you are too fat." Well, at that point I had already accepted the term so it was not a shock, though too me it had an impact rather than saying you are morbidly obese....
Fatty liver sucks, no matter what people say it hurts.... It feels like you have been kicked in the liver, all the time.
Lemon juice, cranberry supplements work wonders on it !0
