    ok what is paleo?

Its where you have to stop eating some really healthy foods because cavemen didn't eat them, and look how well the cavemen are doing....

EPIC! :) Now that is an honest and direct answer, and I share your thoughts on this one.

I thought her post was awesome.
Paragraphs are your friend. You'd probably get more readers if you didn't post a wall of text.

Hahahaha!! Some of us are crazy, honest to goodness!!:) I think all she came on here to say, is that you don't need to take weird hormones or pills and starve to lose weight. You can do that just fine making healthier choices, whatever way you go about that is your choice. I thought she was trying to be encouraging, not push paleo.:)

OP, is this what you meant because if so that's not what you've been saying in subsequent posts nor is it implied...

Also eat what only your great grandmother would eat... / or rather I think the original wording was something like don't eat anything your great grandmother wouldn't recognise... Thank God she's Italian and would eat pasta and grains and potatoes!

To whoever said eliminate dairy and restrict carbs... fruit/Veg are all carb ridden... after all thats what fructose is, a type of sugar, and sucrose which is also present. No-one should be restricting any food groups without the supervision of a doctor or nutritionist, Even lactose and casein intolerance/allergy sufferers tend to replace this with dairy equivalents such as dairy free milk, dairy free cheese or at least lactose free. In fact low fat dairy products rich in calcium can help you LOSE weight by helping inhibit some of the absorption of fat in your intestine!

To the poster that said people eat offal. Yes, some people do but a lot don't and turn their nose up at kidneys, liver, heart etc tec... plus you shouldn't really eat nervous tissue anymore from bovine creatures due to the risk of CJD which puts brain and eyeballs out of the question really.

Also yes there are lots of lovely edible plants to forage out there... especially in the UK countryside, sadly for us folk who live in urban areas, this isn't available so there isn't lovely sorrel and rocket about to eat and quite frankly, I'd get bored with that. Paleolithic "man" would eat whatever and hope for the best, That said, could the majority of people recognise sorrel if they saw it anyway? Due to the build up of urban areas and farming it means there's less wild land for people to live off. Farming has replaced foraging. And quite rightly so.

I'm very pro-foraging... in fact we go out to pick mushrooms in late Summer/Autumn (Lake District-mostly around Torver, Coniston Water) and dry out a lot of the ceps we find. A real luxury. However there isn't enough of it to be sustainable sources of food for us... as much as I would love it. In fact when I'm out on our chestnut farm in Italy, we use a lot of stuff we find on the land... That said, despite it being "wild" it wasn't in the 1950s before it was abandoned, so even all the produce there is a result of farming.

Thankfully, the more astute and clever cavemen decided to start processing food. They started cooking their meat, and storing food when they could, Lets face it, our grandparents ate processed food if pasta counts or even, bread.

I wonder why other than modern medicine, people in Western Countries are living longer? Most people who sustain a normal healthy weight and exercise will live a long happy life, dependent upon genetic and Act of God factors. And that includes eating things "banned" in paleo. In fact the mediterraneans seem to have it sussed with one of the best mortality rates. They eat lots of dairy, pasta, bread, carbs, cooked meats and fish, coffee, wine and torta (cakes)!

Why would you go paleo when a healthier much more satisfying, less restrictive and easier diet is out there - easier in terms of getting the correct nutrition, flexibility of options available and easier to control yourself to do i.e. you don't have to avoid foods you may previously have loved, such as bread, pasta, dairy, cakes.

Mind you, each to your own, if you enjoy the crunchiness of raw veg all the time, uncooked meat and offal be my guest! Just don't invite me over to dinner! And I won't be "cooking" you a special paleo diet at mine... well, you copuld have a slab of raw steak cut straight off the cow's buttock and a salad and some crunchy crudites! One less steak to ask how you like it I suppose!

If you want everyone to agree with this post then move it to Success Stories. Everyone there holds hands and don't care how you did it if you use 13 exclamation points in your title.

Or you can post on your wall on your profile and have your friends give you useful comments like "Great!" "Awesome!!" and "You go mama!!!"

You can't expect people to agree with you on the forums or even in life. There are always people with different opinions. You just have to be adult about it and learn the difference between disagreeing and being rude. Sadly I doubt most f you can even do that.

Don't go around posting crap and expecting everyone to praise you on it and hit the invisible "Like" button. If you post something, then be prepared to have people NOT except it.

Oh and another thing, please don't get all butt hurt cause you didn't get all the rainbow and sunshine posts you were so hoping you'd get after you spent most of your morning thinking up the most awesominess post on the world.

DISCLAIMER: The YOU is referring to all of you who post anything online. So once again, don't get butt hurt cause honestly I doubt anyone actually cares.

Brain is being eaten again and as for people who turn their nose up at offal....what does that have to do with post which said to ask primal eaters whether they ate offal......as though it were the most outlandish thing anyone had ever heard of? My guess is that whomever originally wrote those questions was a person of rather limited imagination who couldn't cook.
Also yes there are lots of lovely edible plants to forage out there... especially in the UK countryside, sadly for us folk who live in urban areas, this isn't available so there isn't lovely sorrel and rocket about to eat and quite frankly, I'd get bored with that. Actually I wouldn't say 'rightly so' - not being able to limit our own global population is no good reason for ransacking vast swathes of wild and turning it into agricultural land that's intensively farmed (it is possible to farm ethically, but the majority is not), thereby retarding the biodiversity? Now if people could just manage to curb their breeding, farming may not be so much of an issue......but that's not going to happen anytime soon, especially whilst a lot of people are so hell-bent on clinging hold of antiquated ideas like religion.
I wonder why other than modern medicine, people in Western Countries are living longer?
Without modern medicine it wouldn't be possible to say whether man was living longer. After all, the biggest killers were things we now have vaccines for and/or can cure fairy easily.

I do it purely to annoy on health and fitness sites myself.

Wow!!! My post received117 hits!! whoohoo!! And I thought I was a thread killer!!!!! I did learn something today, READING COMPREHENSION was not your forte while in school!!!! hahahahaha
Thanks to all who understood from the first read what my post was about. It had nothing to do with what YOU should be eating for crying out loud....or what diet you should be on..... dummies!
Geez!!!! I shared a story about a weight loss competition where I ate Paleo and another did HCG. How dieting should be natural healthy eating vs hormonal drops/injections so that your weight/fat loss could be long term instead of short term. WTF were you guys talking about? Ewww, go eat, you bunch of cranky folks!!

You do realize that your entire thread was started by a comment that you follow a Paleo Diet and that you talked about winning a weight loss competition by following it.

So for the most part many people on this thread do indeed have good reading comprehension skills and are not dummies as you so eloquently put it. Many people expressed a concern regarding the paleo dieting philosophy which is their right since you started the whole darn post.

This is what I call an epic swing and a miss! Best of luck.

I wrote paleo-like lifestyle and yes I did win against someone who was on HCG drops, eating 500 calories and looking ill. I also commented on eating healthy, Yes I did!!! Oops sorry!

I just read this whole thread in one go, talk about going off on tangents! I am curious though, with paleo and other diets that restrict/eliminate dairy, how do you get calcium? I have eczema and dairy makes it worse, is there other ways of getting calcium? without suppliments?

By eating calcium rich foods such as ,but not limited to,: dried herbs, sesame seeds, tofu, almonds, flax seeds, green leafy vegetables like collards, turnip, mustard greens, spinach and seaweed. Hope that helps :)

Paleo does not sound like a fad to me, but for the most part, what ever works for you may not work for everyone, but it is always good to inform others of what you are doing and what works, because it can help another person who also may be able to use this. Fad diets where you starve yourself and do not learn to cut back on foods and eat sensibly just do not last. Quick is not always better. Hard work always pays off in the end

Thanks, the fish with bones makes sense, seems a bit obvious now that I think about it. Will try to start eating loads more kale and spinach too.
On the whole paleo thing, some diets work for some people and others for others. Whilst some may seem very unhealthy such as atkins others swear by them. I dont know enough to judge, though I am starting to think corn is evil, especially after watching food inc and Killer at Large

I got your back - been Paleo for a while; roommate has been Paleo for 3 years. If you love it, keep it up and don't listen to anyone else.

To me, a fad diet is something like Sensa, where it just seems silly. Losing weight from eliminating bread and pasta and eating more fresh meat and produce isn't really that crazy...

Funny how most of us Paleo and low-carbers are friendly and supportive, while the annorexic (1000 calorie a day) MFP elite knock everyone else's dietary choices.

I'm probably not going to check this thread, so send the hate mail directly to me please ;)

I think that was me who said that some need to eliminate dairy and some need to restrict carb. And, yes, fruit/veg are carbs. Which was exactly my point. You don't need to eat anything made from grains in order to get your carbs in order to replace glycogen stores.

And, as others have mentioned, there are other ways to get calcium than from dairy.

FWIW, I don't do paleo and, even though I eat lower-carb, I do eat occasional grains, pasta, etc., just in more limited amounts because too much causes me problems including, but not limited to, bloating, horrible heartburn, etc.. And I happen to love my dairy.

There is nothing unhealthy about eating paleo if that is what people prefer.
