Do you belong to MFP secretly?

Just wondering does your spouse,( significant other), best friends or family, know you are a part of MFP? Or are you keeping it to yourself?

I personally, have not told anyone. Reason - This is something I am doing for MYSELF!

I've been trying to recruit all my friends and family to join with me! Reason - accountability! Plus it's helped me so much, I want everyone else to reap the benefits as well :)

When I first joined, it was hard to keep it a secret, not that I was trying, but when you are exercising and counting calories, it's hard to do it in the closet, iykwim. He does notice in other ways anyways.

My husband knows, and my sisters know... some people I work with know because they're also trying to lose weight/get fit. However my sister is the only person on my mfp that I know in real life-- I like it that way.

I wouldn't say it was secret but I kept it to myself until ppl started asking me what I was 'doing' to lose weight. If someone asks, I tell them

I did until I posted a link to it on my FB page a few days ago. No big deal either way.

Whenever a friend of mine mentions that they want to lose weight or eat healthier, I tell them about MFP. People often comment about how I eat "so healthy," and I definitely wouldn't eat as well without the help of this site. Gotta give props!

Ironically, my husband joined the site and told me about it. He was my first friend. Now I get messages about how he hasn't logged in for a million days and might need some encouragement.

I started out belonging to MFP secretly and didn't reply to any message boards or add any friends on here. Now, I don't go around saying "Hey, I'm on MFP" but I don't hide it either. And I reply to all kinds of posts and have added several friends here too.

I recently "came out" as an MFP user on facebook. Admitting that you're using a tool for weight loss is not a bad thing. In fact, you never know who it will help. Several of my friends are trying to be healthier too and haven't been tracking! Maybe they will now that they know that I do.

that's the same reason I haven't told anyone irl about mfp (or the fact that I'm losing weight) either - they wouldn't be supportive at all.

My wife knows I'm here. I recommend MFP to my friends.

But I don't want my coworkers to friend me. I have the same policy for Facebook: Don't friend anyone until after you stop working together.

I have a nosy couple aunts and pain in the *kitten* friends of my wife who are like "whose that I saw you talking to? That's not your wife!" They're on my ignore list and they hate me.

I only know one of my MFP friends in real life. She never really logs on..I like it this way.

I need the "confessional value" of privacy (on the web, lol).

Whenever a friend mentions they're trying to lose weight or just eat healthier, or mentions they've noticed a bit of a weight loss on me, I always refer them to MFP. Can't say enough good things about this site :)

My physician's assistant, who shops at the same health food store I do, asked me if I knew about MFP. She's certainly encouraging her patients to be on here. Also, it's proven fact that if you have friends sharing the same goal, you will lose a greater percentage of excess and faster too.

I'm not keeping it a secret, but I don't generally tell people what sites/forums I belong to. It really just doesn't come up.

People tend to ask me what I'm doing with my iPod at meals, so I tell them I'm tracking my food and exercise on MFP. It comes up in conversation sometimes with friends - I think a few people in my life have downloaded the app after I've showed it to them. I also talked to my doctor about it and she said she was going to start recommending it to her other patients.

No, no secret. And I am doing this for me and me alone as well. But it's nice to have support from family. My husband knows, my parents know, my sisters know, my in laws more or less know, a couple of my good friends know.
I love MFP so if I can direct someone who is wanting to help themselves here, I will try my best!
  • I've been a secret member for about a year, but made no progress because I wasn't actively using the program. I only checked in occasionally. When I started getting serious about it, and losing a little weight, my husband noticed and asked me what I was doing different.

Now he's on MFP too, and we are doing it together, motivating each other to eat healtier at every meal. I'm hoping now that we are both doing it, I'll have better success. :)

I'd shout it from the rooftops if I could, everyone should know about MFP and how wonderful it is! :) Losing weight is nothing to be embarrassed about. If I've learned anything over the last 13 months, it's that the more people who know you are trying to get/be/stay healthy, the more people there are to support you, both in real life and online.
