I guess I shouldn't be surprised that there would be so many anti-feminist comments here.

I started this thread to meet other like-minded people, not to provide an elementary definition of feminism or to point out why feminism is important. If you don't see the rampant misogyny and hatred of women's bodies and voices, then you're not paying attention. It's that simple.

Feminist/activist energy is a limited resource, and I'm not going to waste mine on feeding the trolls.

To the awesome feminists who have said commented on this thread - hello! It's great to see that there are so many of us here :)

Damn, ask some questions and all of a sudden you're a troll

I've seen a certain amount of hating on certain body types, but it comes as much from women as men IMO. Hatred of women's "voices"....I admit I haven't seen.

I was honestly curious about how certain people define feminism because it seems to mean different things to different people. I've never considered myself a feminist so it's interesting to me to see what it means to those who do identify as such.

And maybe you'd have more energy if you were a little nicer. Just a thought.

Yes, backlash. Someone asks for feminists friends, and people come out of the woodwork to make bad jokes, deny the need for feminism because hey, things are so much better now!, and say it's outdated and all feminists are pretty much man-haters anyway. Ta Da!

I saw one post that I would consider backlash for it's snarky commentary, but other than that it just seemed like people joking around and having honest discussions. I don't consider that "backlash". <shrug>

So, I'm just going to mostly ignore the entire debate on the forum and say -- I identify as a "feminist" to people who are sensitive and subtle enough to appreciate the difference between being feminist and being misandrist (as most dissenters on this thread appear to be missing). I used to even be okay with the "radical feminist" label until I realized the outdated, first-wave transphobia endemic to the movement.

And yes, people, feminism has waves... and even within the waves, there is plenty of disagreement. So anyone who says "I dislike 'feminism' because it is x, y, or z" is already kind of working from a flawed assumption, because there is no single, Official Definition of Feminism.

As for the relationship between weight loss and feminism, I always find it interesting that I tend to begin weight loss projects from a place of insecurity, but so long as I am serious about the exercise side of things, any body image issues get sort of transvaluated, because the sense of athletic achievement you get from training hard is just so ****ing amazing.

    Adding you now! :)

    Right on

    (edited to fix spelling)

Don't give me that...lol. If I posted a blatantly anti-feminist plea for friendship with such obvious and derogatory commentary as you made in yours against an 'unspecified' group of people who DON'T FEEL THE SAME WAY YOU DO (thus the narrow mindedness)...you people would have it reported and shut down so quickly there wouldn't have been a single damn reply.

Double standards, and passive/aggressive feminism at it's best.

One, it's not her job to be nicer to people in her thread.

And Two, women can be as un-feminist as men. The patriarchy is supported by both men and women, it's a self-reinforcing machine. So saying that "women do ___ too" does not make whatever "X" is okay or feminist or no big deal.

    Have a nice day!

She didn't say the OP was required to be nice to anyone...she simply made a polite suggestion. Usually it's people like you, telling others how they should believe, act, and think.

    Project much?

do you ever wonder why women hate each other so much? seriously, think about you're saying here. i'm not here to judge or attack you, but really, you've got to think more deeply.

answer: patriarchal/anti-feminist self-hatred is imposed on girls as soon as we are able to even understand the (socially constructed) concept of gender. if that's too complicated, think of it this way: we are trained to hate each other because society favors men and having women turn against one another is a powerful strategy employed by patriarchal social institutions.

YES! I can relate to this. I am a feminist, and believe that women (and men) should NOT be judged based on their appearances, especially should not be judged based on their body size.

And yet, I vaule MYSELF less because of my larger size. How terrible and messed up is that?

I didn't say it was her job, I just said that she might have more energy. Being angry all the time takes an emotional and physical toll on a person. I find it kind of pointless myself.

When I see people spouting off about the "patriarchy", it just comes to mind that they're talking about men. What you said makes sense though. I was just explaining that while I've seen nasty comments about different body types, I don't really see this rampant sexism that the OP seems to see. I find it annoying and insulting for someone to say "you're just not paying attention" when, in fact, it may just be that I interpret things differently than someone else. What's a horrible, sexist comment to you may just be funny as hell to me.

And seeing as how it's almost 2 a.m. here I'm hoping for a nice night, rather than day

Actually, this is a public form owned by MyFitnessPal. The OP has no say on who can post here. If the OP is looking for a group of like-minded people, the OP should create a group then allow only those that meet her approval.

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups

There have been many who posted interest in having such a group so the OP should copy the names, create a group and not worry about any outside opinions/comments/rants/jokes that can and will be posted in the public forums.

Be careful my friend...or you'll be accused of turning them against each other (you know that's what happens when you stick ten women in the same room and then toss in a controversial topic...oh, wait...that's ALL people...duh) too.

Freakin male agendas...can't get away from them can you ladies.

Cris, are you not invited to the 'League of Men' meetings? They're awesome!

We sit around farting and drinking beer, all the while thinking of ways to turn women against eachother... I thought the whole body image conspiracy was our crowning acheivement... if they only know that every weightloss company, gym and fashion boutique was owned by 'the league'. They'd be hatin'

PM me, and I'll send you an invite to the next event - keep it a secret from them women folk though!

Actually, it was the most polite term that sprang to mind within a reasonable time frame for an intelligent woman whom I might otherwise respect, if it wasn't for the completely moronic theory she just put forth.

I am not sure why ALL Women don't call themselves feminists.

thank you for speaking some sense into this thread!

To answer the person who asked about the definition of feminism:

feminism is a belief in the social, political and economic equality of the sexes and a movement working towards social and political change
it seeks to include women in human rights

here is a video for amusement:
*kitten* People Say to Feminists: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yn0t1EkPe4c
My favourite quote: "well yeah I think women should have equal rights but I'm definitely not a feminist"

That's all I have the energy for.

Different people ask for different types of friends on these boards all the time, why is this different? Progressive/liberals, conservatives, Christians, atheists, Muslims, sports fans, parents, moms, dads etc. They’re not asking for you (general you) or anyone else to berate them or troll the crap out of their thread because their title threatens you.

All of this trolling is beyond silly. If you guys are that threatened by feminism I suggest you get a hobby.

Again for those still reading and willing to listen, patriarchy isn't a conspiracy theory where men sit in a room and devise ways to oppress women. Patriarchy is a system that through history has given advantages or privileges to those who haven't necessarily earned it, in this case usually men and generally those who are white and straight. Think of it more as a leaning in one's favor kind of system. There is a built in favoritism towards men in our society, and in most societies. It doesn't make all men right or wrong. It just means our system is unequal, and feminism acknowledges this and strives to correct the imbalance. We aren't trying to take away men's rights, we're trying to give more rights to those who don't have them.

Ahh, now begins the 'lets talk in circles until nothing that is said could possibly make sense due to the covoluted nature of my argument!' portion of our program.

I'll bite though. 'It' being plot and plan against the opposite gender. You know...the one most of us work our entire lives trying to comprehend...much less change.
