I have used both the eliptical and the treadmill. Since you control your speed of usage on both pieces of equipment, I think the degree to which you become out of breath is pretty much at your discretion. I will throw another possibilty in here and mention the Treadclimber.
It is Nautilus/Bowflex product which combines the motion of the treadmill and the eliptical, and to a lesser degree the stairclimber. I used to work for Nautilus and actually sold them. Since the headquarters had a state of the art gym, I had a chance to use this and other equipment. I don't have bad knees, but many people who do insist that the Treadclimber is much easier on them than a treadmill, and they preferred the range of motion/body action that was required on it as it felt more natural to them than the eliptical. The sales literature likens it to "Walking on Sand". They are not cheap, but if your gym has one, it is worth checking out.

Hi everyone. I can't begin to respond to everyone tonight. It has been a busy board. Thanks to you all for your care and concern for Neil. He is quite well today, happy and chatty, very chatty!! He is certainly colourful with his bruises and scrapes. We can either keep him in a glass box or let him live his life with always the possibility of falls. We think he has a right to live his life but it is a bit scary at times. He is well loved that is for sure.
Hi to you Beth. I will be cheering you on from Saskatchewan!! You have a great attitude.
I should be thinking about getting to bed as I need to go to work tomorrow and should be relatively alert if I am going to be doing interviews.
Good night and sleep well, my friends. Gayla :yawn:0 -
Hi Gayla, So glad Neil is "Jolly by Golly "And not in pain., even tho he is kind of beat up.

The doctor increase my water pills and I lost 1 1/2 lb this morning. I figure I was retaining water for my wwweight to come back up. She told me to take 2 a day till my weight comes back down.
Not much news today. except this is a free day, no ddoctor appt , no grocer store run, no nothing just watch my diet. And do some walking.
Havw a good day everybody0 -
Busy morning, had to go to the eye doctor for my check-up. I have the beginning stages of macular degeneration and have to be checked every six months. It is a little worse but he said I should have several good years. My dad and my brother both had it, my brother can't drive anymore and has a special magnifying glass for his TV. I am hoping I don't end up like him but I think it is the genes.
Gayla, glad Neil is being chatty, that must mean he is not in a lot of pain. Hope your first day back at work went well. Make sure you get some rest tonight.
Marie, the gin game was Tuesday and I lost about $7.00. Last night at bingo I won one game of bingo for $75 and another $15. (5 winners) I go more to socialize with friends but winning is a bonus.
Kind of a gloomy day today, but it seems to be clearing up now.
Puppy class tonight.
Tired, think I will try a little nap.:smokin:
Sandy0 -
Sandy, My husband and I both usally take a nap in our chair in the afternoon. Somestime I go get in bed.
You are a very socialble gal. Good for you. I hope you have a lot of good eyesight left and never get that bbad. Have a good time with Daisy. Sammy loves to go tothe post office with Jerry. I made a bill out and went and put it on Jerry's desk and Sammy got so excited for he knew he would get to go bye bye.0 -

I just came back from a potluck. I ate my dinner at home before I went. A few people asked why I wasn’t eating but nobody was really all that interested.
:flowerforyou: Beth, I am in awe of your running accomplishments
:flowerforyou: Ellen, I’m glad the fires are dying down.
:flowerforyou: Jeffrey, I look forward to hearing how your next five pounds will go. I’ll continue to think good thoughts about you finding the right job.
:flowerforyou: Gayla, glad to hear that Neil is in better spirits after his harrowing experience. He seems to be quite resilient.
:flowerforyou: Sandy, sorry to hear about your eyes. I’ll be thinking good thoughts for you.
:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: Marie, I agree with you about taking a nap in the afternoon. The dogs love it when I get in bed. They jump in with me.
hugs,

This old gal is doing fine, I am losing all that water weight now.I should start feeling better soon.
For Breakfast this morning it will be :
1 poached egg
a sl of whole wheat buttered toast
1/2 cantalope
big glass of ice water
This is from a 1972 diet of weight watchers book.
Hope you all have a wonderful Friday.
Marie0 -
You breakfast sounds very healthy Marie, you are taking good care of yourself. Don't you feel better knowing that the weight was water gain? Now throw in a little execise, like walking around the house a few times a day and you will start losing those extra pounds quickly.
Barbie, I would imagine going to a potluck dinner and not eating would bring a few questions, but it is your body and you can do what you want with it, as long as it is healthy. I never did get a nap in yesterday, I am addicted to my computer.
Hope everyone else is having a good day and hope all your dreams and wishes come true.
Sandy0 -
Hi everyone! I just got back from the city after doing a few errands and going out for lunch with colleagues. Two of our staff are leaving so it was time to say good-bye. They had only been there a year but I will miss them both. I met with Neil's social worker and she is working on getting him into a group home. I hope he still wants it when it is time to move. We are just starting with short stays but not likely until the new year. His knee was weeping a bit last night so I am hoping there is no infection. I will keep a close eye on it and continue using polysporin. If it isn't better Monday we will go see the Dr. He was a bit crabby last night but I think he is just uncomfortable. Today he is out and about on his bike.
Someone asked how much snow we had in the picture and I really can't remember but it was a blizzard which involved a lot of wind making it seem even that there was more snow than there may have been. I know it was a lot and it brought traffic to a halt. They are teasing us now by saying the winter will be warm. Hmm, I wonder if I can believe that. It probably will be as this is the winter that we are taking the holiday. Oh well, no matter how warm it is here it will be warmer in the Caribbean.
Marie -- Glad the fluid is coming off. I know you will be feeling better. Are you following the 1972 version of WW? I think that was the fist version that I used. It worked well. Actually WW has always worked well for me but I don't do well at keeping it off. I have lost a couple more pounds so am happy about that. Slow and steady wins the race (so the say).
Sandy -- I also am way too addicted to the computer. It has really cut into my reading time and I need to change that. My list of books that I want to read is getting longer!
Have a great weekend everyone. Keep smiling. Gayla0 -
Gayla. Yes itiis the 1072 vrsion of WW. I was never on it before. I reach my goal in 1969 and follow a 1963 program. I like this one for It tell you how much and what to eat, Portion control. Thats what I needed. I still have 2 glasses of milk and a fruit to go yet. I can have a big milk shake. I had a apple about 3:30 and I couldn't hardly eat all my require food for supper. Jerry always told me I just ate all the time on it. They introduce patatoe, and cereal in this one, I am going to wait awhile before I try that. I lost on an average of 2 lbs a week.Someime more sometime less Average out to be 10 lbs a month. I don't expect to do that this time, but I will take what I can get. HEY, i JUST NOTICE YOUR NEW WEIGHT. CONGRATS ON THE LOSS. You are doing fine.
Jake, have you ever try roasted brussell spouts? I took a bag of frozen one and thaw them out some Sprinkle salt and pepper and spray some butter Pam and roasted then . good if you like brussell sprouts I roast some of the other frozen foods too. I like the califlower and brocolli roasted.
Have a good evening everyone0 -
:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:
The timing of our meals got very confused today and so we have dinner in the oven right now. It was supposed to be cooked on the grill but it got cold and windy and it didn't make sense to cook outside. We made foil packets with chicken, yellow and green peppers, yellow squash, grape tomatoes, and sweet onions. Jake has an extra packet of mushrooms. It's almost ready and it smells great.
:flowerforyou: Marie, I don't think either of us likes Brussels sprouts so we'll stick to roasting cauliflower, broccoli, and squash.
:flowerforyou: Gayla, congratulations on losing more weight
:flowerforyou: Sandy, I have to kick myself off the computer often so I can some other things done.
time to eat---hugs to all

Hi All,
Well things should have been slowing down here but we are now starting a new building and finishing another... not to mention half my guys were pulled for yet a different job... so much for not being busy all the dang time guess it will make the last month and a half here go quick.
Marie - glad to hear your doing well and your water pills are doing the trick. My dad is still on his grandpa deployment and taking care of the rug rat... mom I am sure is ready for him to come home. My son is a senior this year and looking in to colleges... he tells me he is looking at Cameron in Lawton OK on an Army scholarship...really wish he wouldnt go in but then again who am I to talk I have 20 years in as of this past July.
Gayla - I still think your an awesome mom and Neil is a lucky man to have you as a mom. Hope he is
still doing OK from his spill.
Barbie - Here is the secret about the running... I havent run more then 3-4 miles at a time up to this
point... so I am gutting out the 5.6 miler and the 13.1 miler as well... I figure as long as I keep
running I will be doing well (I run half the speed of snail) I am shooting for a 2 hour and 30
minute half marathon time. I walked most of one before and did it in 3 hours so I hope to run this one and do better.
Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend... I will be happy when I get back to the world and get to have a 2 day break... (of course here your better off staying busy) I will spend my partial day off running so that when I run on Sept 11th I wont look like an idiot and will be able to at least hold my own.
Marie can you send me your address in an email please? I have something to send to you from here.
Beth0 -
Thought I would share with you all... it was nice to be "well above average" because most of the time I am middle of the pack as far as the military is concerned. Just a fun little test to try and see what happens... I did this (all but the walk) while on a teleconference
Enjoy all
Beth

Sunny morning but cool, kind of nice but I do like hot weather. When it starts changing like this then I know winter isn't far behind. :grumble:

Rainy and yucky here in RI :grumble: Getting the back end of the hurricane:frown: But good day to get some exercise and get some housework done I did 50 min on the treadmill and burned 230 calories ( I'm careful how fast I go as a result of not being that active recently) and I feel great!!! Not even tired!.
Just found out my mother (85 years old:happy: ) has joined MFP! She said it's the most motivated she's felt in years to lose weight!!!! What a champion and role model she is! She's just so cute!!
Hope veryone has a great day! :drinker: :drinker: :drinker:

Hi Birdie,
Sorry about your weather. I am about as far away west of you as one can get, unless you are swimming:laugh: and it is supposed to be in the 70's here today with a few clouds.
As long as that hurricane behaves itself and stays off the East coast, it doesn't sound like it will cause too many problems.
*******************************
The only environmental unpleasantness in my area is a wildfire in the Columbia Gorge, about 70 miles east from me. It is within about 10 miles of my friends who live outside the town of Mosier--the town itself is under voluntary evacuation right now, but so far my friends property is not in any danger.
The husband in this couple made a bad joke about having the bratwurst and the marshmallows ready if the fire came closer, but it doesn't appear they will be directly affected. I just hope they get it contained by Labor Day weekend, because I am supposed to go up there and barbecue pork ribs, and swim in their pool.
My girlfriend freely admits she hates to cook, and since she operates a dog kennel on their property, and live away from town, she doesn't have a lot of time to run around shopping either, so we plan the menu together, I do the shopping and execute the food, and she pays for it. Works for me. I enjoy barbecuing for large groups, and she has a nice big house, so everybody wins--even me, as long as I watch my calories. The nice thing about this arrangement is I am always able to slide healthy things in, and after they all rave over how good they taste, I tell them they accidentally ate something healthy and they are amazed. At our last gathering, it was interesting to watch the hummus disappear in a flash, :noway: while the ranch dip languished.
I need to get off here or I am going to be late for breakfast with my uncalorieconscious neighbor. Then we are going to Costco.
Til later

Birdie hur ray for you mother. Is she going to join us seniors? Hope so and I wont be the oldest of the group. Would love to hear from her. Be looking forward to her Posting.
Sandy, Daisy keep you hopping. So does Sammy. But Jerry take care of him more than I do.
Galya, I am still on my 1972 WW diet. Going great. And you are doing so good on your no S diet. This is a pretty good clean eating program The only processed food I get is 2 sl. of regular bread, one for breakfast and one for lunch. My faverite of all. for I love bread. At night I get 4 oz of #4 veggies. [ the more starchy ones.] All the # 3 lighter ones I want. Lots of lean meat. 3 fruit a day, 2 cups instance non fat pwder milk, As soon as I get used to this I think I will like it.
Barbiecat , Brussell sprouts has to grow on you. At first when I just starting to eat them I kep telling myself the next bite will be better and now I love them. I am going to cook a pot of butterbeans for that is the only beans I can eat on this diet, but they are one of my faverite. Will have to check my book out and see when and how much i can have. Bought me a bag of clemtimes this morning. I hope they are good.0 -
Hello to all my wonderful supportive friends. :flowerforyou: :flowerforyou: I went for a super long walk this morning and the whole time I was walking I was thinking about what I would tell you about my walk. Jake went to Seattle today and took my car (he didn't want to leave his convertible in the parking lot at the ferry all day so I am without a car unless I want to tackle driving the little car with stick shift. In preparation for my walk I drank only a cup of tea with breakfast and waited 90 minutes before going out since there are no restrooms on the route. I walked for a little more than 60 minutes before turning around to come back. The trail I walk is wonderful. At first the only other trail user was the "mower" (one of those vehicles you see on the highway with the long arm that mows the tall grass along the edge). It spoiled the image I had of the trail being maintained by faithful walkers coming out with their pruning shears and weed eaters.
:flowerforyou: My admiration for Barb and her almost daily 5-7 mile walks has grown.
:flowerforyou: My admiration for Beth and the 5 mile and 13 mile runs she's training for is even greater.
When I got home from my walk, my step counter said that I'd gone eight miles (over 18000 steps) That included walking the dogs at 5:30 and going to the grocery store at 7:00 so the walk was actually shorter than that.
I walked for just over two hours and I was hungry, thirsty, and tired when I got home. While I was deciding which thing to take care of first, I walked the dogs in the back yard. They keep thinking I'm going to take them to the dog park but they don't know I don't have the car. Jake probably won't get home before dark, so they'll have to wait until tomorrow.
:flowerforyou: Birdie----I hope you'll get your mom connected to this thread. It would be great to have her with us.
:flowerforyou: Marie, I'm glad your WW diet is working. Thanks for opening up your food diary. It is fun to see what other people are eating.
:flowerforyou: Barb, congratulations on losing more weight
So after that long walk, did I earn a snack or a nap or both
hugs,
Barbie0 -
Hello Barbiecat, You be careful out walking by yourself on the trail. It could be dangerous. Here they don't recomend walking by yourself on the trails, I had someone try to pick me up once on one my walks along time ago. Its a shame people aren't safe out on walking. Do be careful and keep your eyes open. I got where I just walk around the city lake for there is not thru any woods like the others,Its pretty open and always people around.
I open my dairy because I thought it would make me more aware of what I am eaing. My shortcake I had listed was just 1 sl of bread,1/2 strawberries and 1/2 c cottage cheese. I lost it once and had a time trying to get it back on. fially figure out what I ws doing wrong.
Barbs you too be careful out walking. You keep your eyes open.
Phoebe, Did someone get you.
Jeffrey , are you still eating an apple before each meal. I had one yesterday for a afternoon snack and I really wasn't very hungry for my enveing meal?
I am cooking some turnips and turnips greens for supper. Too bad I can't have any cornbread. Will have a steak to go with it.
The reat of you have a wonderful weekend.0 -

Not to worry, it is very easy.
First you need to find your mom's profile. To start with, you need to know her login name. You probably have noticed the link for your own profile when you are on your "my home" page, but anyone can get to it or any other profile by putting the address into their browser window. The address for YOURS is .
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/birdiem
Take the address above, and subsituted your mom's login name for your name (birdiem). Be sure to type it in EXACTLY as entered, with any capitalization. Type or copy and paste the full address into a browswer address bar and if you have entered it correctly, your mom's profile will appear. In it will be a green button to the right side of her avatar/picture, if she has one, that says "add as friend"
Click on that button and it will allow you to send a personal message along with the request to add as a friend. You can send her the address for this thread, if you want to.
It is :
http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/61898-senior-golden-sneakers-club-for-august?page=7#posts-803686
That will get her to page 7 of our thread, which is where your last message happens to be, probably along with this one.
Good luck.
If you need more help, send me a PM or post here. I may not have time to respond until Sunday. Still have errands to run and I am going out for Chinese tonight with the same neighbor I had breakfast with. He had a breakfast of eggs, bacon and two pancakes, while yours truly had oatmeal with raisins, and some cottage cheese. He couldn't believe I only ate half my oatmeal and took the rest home, but after drinking 3 cups of decaf, I was full.
See you later, all

Good Morning,
Had Wii game night last night and my son and his girl stayed until 12:30am. I stay up that late every night though so it was no big deal. The problem was with Daisy who insisted on waking me up at 7:30  so I am tired. Tomorrow is my husband's 70th birthday, so his son is having a small surprise dinner for him today. He and his wife were flying his sister in from California to surprise their dad, but she canceled at the last minute due to illness. She is in severe back pain that they can't seem to diagnose. We also invited two nuns, that have been friends of the family for years, so I hope I get a little nap in before we go over there.
I never thought of it Barbie and Barb, but Marie is right, you shouldn't be walking by yourself in today's world, it is too dangerous. I know you are both intelligent women, and you must know your area but please be careful. And congratulations on the weight loss, you girls are doing terrific.
Marie, your diet sounds like it is working and it sounds like you like what you eat. You are doing amazing and we are proud of you. You are sound so cheery, you make the rest of us smile ever morning.
Birdie, I too hope you find your mom and link her to our posts. It would be amazing to meet such an inspirational lady. I want to be just like her and stay active always. It is the only way to stay young.
Hope everyone else is well and happy.
Sandy0 -
Hi everyone! Another gorgeous sunny Saskatchewan day! I have clothes in the wash and will enjoy hanging them outside in the sunshine. Yesterday my sister and I attended out cousin's funeral. My Dad named me after her as he thought she was so special. It was nice to reconnect with cousins that I haven't seen for a long time. It often seems it takes a funeral to bring family together.
I hope you can help your Mom find her way here, Birdie. My Dad had a cousin called Birdie and I think of her every time I see your name.
Neil is wanting some breakfast so I should get on that. I think I will use my new toy, I bought the Cuisinart Griddler a few days ago. I have been wanting it for a long time but I held off. I have a bit of a thing with electrical appliances. My kids tease me about my appliance garage but when a girl needs one she just needs one. I made paninis with it and they turned out great. I think I will make some pancakes (yeah for an S day)!
Back atcha later. Keep smiling. Gayla0 -
Gayla. What do you do the other days when it is not a S Day? on the S day you get sweets..I love all these gagget and want them all. Now I am hankering for one of those Chop chop or whatever they are call. I also want a new processer. I may go to WalMart this week and see what they have.
I had a very good lunch. I had some cooked cauliflower , Made me a caserole with Chop up califlower 2 cups, Chops Bell peppers, chop mushrooms. and recontitues some dehydrated some onions Bake in a small casserrole and at the last added 2 oz of pepper Jack Cheese till melted. Place it all on a sl. of reg. toast.
Yours sound good too only too many carbs for me
Barbiecat , I am doing like you say, I am posting my meal every monring for the day and make a copy and print it out at 150% so i can see it better and hang on my fridge That way I have no excuse.
"Post before I bite"
Sandy I am in a good mood. HAPPY GO LUCKY.
BIRDIE, i TOO HOPE YOUR MOTHER FINDS HER WAY HER.
WE WILL HAVE TO HAVE A WELCOME PARTY FOR HER.0 -
:flowerforyou: :flowerforyou:
I hear what you're saying about walking alone, but this is a safe enough place and I carry a cell phone. Most of the other walkers are women alone. The others are couples my age. Thank you all for your concern.
:flowerforyou: Sandy, Bernie, the cat wakes me at dawn which means that all summer I've been getting up really early. Now that the sun is coming up later I can sleep until six most days. I am an early bird and 10 PM is a late bedtime for me.
:flowerforyou: Marie, your lunch casserole sounds yummy. I love vegetables.
:flowerforyou: Gayla, we used to hang our clothes on the line where we lived before here. Where we are now is too damp and there are no clotheslines allowed in our neighborhood. I remember my mother telling me that when I was a small child she used to hang the clothes outside in the winter in Boston and they would freeze as they dried.
:flowerforyou: Birdie, I hope you find your mom and she finds us. She would add a lot to our group.
All is well here. Jake did some work in the yard and brought in cut flowers so I have several vases full of flowers now  :flowerforyou:
Hugs to all

Hi Marie -- On the No S days I can eat one plate of food three times a day with NO Sweets, NO Snacks and NO Seconds. I leave room on my plate to have my fruit. On the S days I can have any of the above, preferably with some planning and control. S days are any days that start with S or Special days such as birthdays. It is a slow way to lose weight but it works for me. I try to get in all food groups daily. What I do have to watch is portion size. I think I will weigh things for awhile and see how far out I have been. Our dinner plates are large and it is easy to fill them too full. I will pull out my WW stuff to get an idea of portion sizes again.
I love my new griddler. The pancakes turned out great, I used my old stand-by recipe and I made burgers for dinner. I made them from lean ground beef and still collected a lot of grease. I like it so much better than the small George Forman I have in the basement. My kids have a larger George Foreman that they really like. I am going to try some veg. on it this week. The GF didn't cook veg well at all.
Your casserole sounds very yummy. You have to like the foods on your diet plan or you won't stick to it. I remember when I was first on WW the portions were large but I lost weight very quickly. I would take these large dinners to work. mmm, so good.
I have to try the Wii fit again and see if I can make it work for me. My dil said she would have told me not to get it as there is a lot of jumping, etc. I put my sneakers in the car so that I can go for a walk on my lunch break.
Good night everyone. sleep well. Gayla :yawn:0 -
Gayla, you are doing wonderful on the No S diet. It is really all about portion size. And the amount of calories you concume. As long as I get a piece of fruit with my meals I am pretty satisfry. Enjoy reading about your plan. Is Mo still on it. So you still post on the No S site? I reread my book again and seen where tomaotoes are a # 3 veggies. I thought it was a # 4 . Glad to know that, Now I can make some soup out of the # 3 veggies. And also my chilli. Will type up my #3 and #4 veggies and get it on the computor. Something else to poat on my Fridge. :ohwell:
I don't think you are losing so slow. You seems to be doing just fine. Is Dave losing? How is Neil this morning? I am ansious to see how Neli like living in a group home. I think it will be great for him and give you and Dave some time alone time after all these years. But I know you will also miss him being around all the time. I'm sure he will want to come home often. When is his next sugery?
Barbiecat, We all need to be on the alert, no matter where we are at. I feel pretty safe walking around my neigborhood for all I know all the neighbors and stop and chat with them But anything can happen. I too love my veggies. I will plan my eating when Jerry , Sammy and i get back from our walk. Now to get my clothes on so i can
See you guys later.0 -
