Isn’t there more important stuff to worry about?? LIKE THE PRICE OF GAS OR PEOPLE UNABLE TO FIND A JOB WITH 60K IN COLLAGE LOAN DEBT?!

I would certainly complain if I had paid 60k to be educated and walked away unable to spell 'college'.

    ahahaha

Americas obbession with Freedom makes me laugh, its usually the ones that have never been out of the country. Traveled ones or smart ones i have met that haven't been out of the country realise most other westernised countries are just as free, but don't go on about how free they are in a cringey way.

I can assure you I don't fit your stereotype, I am well traveled and appreciate our freedom. There is not another country on the planet that compares (at least for now). The problem is that we are trying too much to be like the rest of the world we are losing what made us special in the first place. You keep laughing and believing your "well traveled misinformed" while those of us who care to preserve what individual liberties we have left keep steady on our course.

No, no, you misunderstood. The quoted individual has a large collection of mixed-media artwork.

I love when people take a health issue and equate it with communism. I mean. . . Really? Unlimited soda is a symbol of freedom in the face of communist tyranny? If that's the best America has for a symbol of freedom, then it's in pretty bad shape, indeed.

Diabetes. . . Heart disease. . . Cancer. . . These are the diseases of an overfed, sedentary population. Obesity is quickly becoming an epidemic in North America, one that will cost billions to treat. Where do you think those billions are going to come from? They'll come from you in the form of taxes and increased health insurance costs. You might talk of individual freedom but the truth is you will be paying collectively for these illnesses. And all to fight diseases that are largely preventable. Remember that when you decide whether unlimited soda is truly a freedom worth fighting for.
Telling us what/how much we can drink is just one tiny step toward our country becoming a communist nation....

You are obviously too simple to understand that it is not about the soda, it is about individual liberty and the freedom of choice. Even the freedom to make a bad one. If you are always forced to make the right choice by the government then down the road the only choices will be those of the government and which of the annointed ones will we grant the power to decide what the right choices are? What if this were a subject that impacted your personal freedom? Would you be so cavilier about this then? It is always about the path that this small decision will take you down. If you don't stop the insanity early it becomes institutional.

Actually, I am not simple at all. But, yes, it is about soda. And skyrocketing healthcare costs. I just question whether this is really about individual freedom when the costs are going to be paid for by society as a whole. How much are you willing to pay to subsidize someone's freedom? How much of your own personal freedom are you going to give up so someone can get a free glass of coke?

Besides, given the great assaults that have been inflicted on personal liberty in the past decade by the military-industrial-security complex and the ones that will occur shortly - like surveillance drones and more cameras - I'm thinking that railing against a refill ban is quixotic at best. I think the time of small decisions has passed.

I don't notice any difference between the UK and America on freedom..atall although there are probably some, none that affect day to day living or would bother me or most people. Neither do any of my American friends that live here in the UK. Your freedom doesn't make you special.. by no means. Selected American People, make it special..not "how free the country is". Your not superior because you are born there. You see that so often, i even heard a family in France say "I'm an American Citizern i deserve some kind of free thing in a hotel".. So cringey.

Or maybe it is because he isn't simple enough to be taken in by a reductio ad absurdum argument which doesn't stand up to logical scrutiny. It is akin to saying that I can never go into a forest and cut down a tree for fire wood because when the tree falls it may collide with another which will topple that tree, which will then strike another and so on meaning the whole forest will get flattened.

Is there a possibility that regulating the market in a small way such as banning refills will ultimately lead to a facist state. Yes, it is possible. Is it probable? No, it is not.

The argument about personal freedom and choice is overly simplistic as well. It is the essence of living in a society that we give up some of the rights we enjoy to gain some of the benefits that organising ourselves into groups provide. It maybe my choice to eat excessively and suffer the health consequences but that will impact on your choice or desire to pay less tax or support my lifestyle. The choices an individual makes in a society has the ability to directly effect in a negative or positive way the choice or freedom of other individuals.

The ideal is to get a balance where people by and large are treated fairly with equal levels of rights and resulting responsibilities. Sometimes the market can achieve that all by itself. Sometimes it cannot and needs regulation.

:grumble: Hmmm this ban has Michelle Obama written all over it

It's a proposal in it's infancy stage from the mayor of Cambridge, Massachusetts. It is not a ban nor has anything to do with Michelle Obama of all people O.O There can be legitimate criticisms of initiatives like these but come on now, that's reaching pretty far.

That's not reaching pretty far to think of her. I did too until I read it. She has already banned McDonald's from giving out caramel for the apples. Heaven forbid kids should have caramel to dip their apples in!

Uhhh, how did Michelle Obama ban McDonalds from giving out caramel for apples? She doesn't have the authority to do that.

    It's called political pressure.

    http://lonelyconservative.com/2010/05/barack-and-michelle-obama-food-hypocrites/

Taking away a little caramel, meanwhile stuffing her big fat face with burgers, shakes, ribs, etc. She's a hypocritical b! who used her position to bully a company into changing their menu. In reality, it'll make kids fatter-now their parents buy them a happy meal and a side of fries, so they're just adding more food to it. But at least they're making an extra sale and the gub'ment can dip their paws into the taxes...

Play this out to the end...first free refills are banned in the name of "public health" and next it is plate portion sizes. Then let's say they decide that red meat or apple pie is not healthy and ban that. Where is the line? I think that anyone who drinks a softdrink of any kind is making a bad diet choice but the what used to be beautiful about this country is that it was a CHOICE.

Another scenerio drawn out to it's absurd....you are now forced to buy healthcare under the Obama Care plan or you will be fined (as of 2014). Fast foward to the next step. Because so many people are on the governent health care plan and it is costing the country too much money we are now going to step in and control your diet, your excercise minimums and your other activity like sun exposure in the name of the economy....could happen and most probably will. It will start with something small like setting a precidence with banning free refills and escalate. Give an inch take a mile concept.

It is a slippery slope when they start infringing upon personal freedom in the name of "the good of the public."

    Amen

    NOOOOAHHHH THE SLIPPERY SLOOOPPPPEEE I""MMMMFALLLLINNGGGGRRRAAHHHEEELPPMMEEEE
another example of not quite THE HOME OF THE BRAVE> you're living in fear...

"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent."

"Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny."

"History, in general, only informs us of what bad government is."

"I have no fear that the result of our experiment will be that men may be trusted to govern themselves without a master."

"I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us, that the less we use our power the greater it will be."

"I know of no safe depository of the ultimate powers of the society but the people themselves; and if we think them not enlightened enough to exercise their control with a wholesome discretion, the remedy is not to take it from them but to inform their discretion."

"I own that I am not a friend to a very energetic government. It is always oppressive."

"My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government."

“All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.”

All quotes by Thomas Jefferson....how many different ways must it be said for all to realize that government is not the solution, it is the problem when it over reaches.

my first response is yeahblah but I'll hold back... i think i have to go out on a tangent. "ALL THAT IS NECESSARY FOR EVIL TO TRIUMPH IS FOR GOOD MEN TO DO NOTHING." how do you reconcile this quote with the republicans (ORRIN HATCH) who put forward the Dream Act in 2001 and are now against it? WE"VE DONE NOTHING FOR 11 FRIGGING YEARS-8 under republican control. Doing Nothing does not equal Obstruction. How can you say government is not the solution in the case of immigration? Not all quotes by founders are applicable to every situation...and that bumpersticker quote of reagan's really irks me...because it is beyond simplistic.

I mean you shoot with all the arrows in your quiver. you use every tool possible to get the job done..... and we all have the same goals; a population better informed about their health. she's not a demon,, she is not out to curtail your 'rights' she's a woman in a position of authority using her place for the good of all . WHY FIGHT HER? why fight your own best interests.. I DO NOT UNDER STAND

And most people in America as soon to be UK are overweight, i think she looks great.. i wouldnt complain if i looked like her. And trying to prove somebody is fat on a weightloss/fitness website is..hypocritical of yourself.

You do seem like a hater, probably somebody that complains about everything in life.

Oh good grief you really need to get over yourself.

Perhaps best if you get back to the "natural birthing, breastfeeding, child-led weaning, baby wearing,..." as per your profile.

I don't think intelligent conversation about politics and economics is your strong point.

Sorry to jump in, but Harvester and Toby Carvery do as well. I think it's becoming pretty standard in chain restaurants. I'd be really peeved if they were baned.
