@NewCaddy I love the cake!! I'm a big watcher of all the cake competitions on food network channel, and that looks like it could be right in there!

@kah68 Thanks so much for the suggestions. I think I have finally found a couple strength training videos to stick to for now! Also, it's a great idea to have something ready for when I'm cooking so I don't snack on unhealthy things. I should have tried that tonight! I kept taking nibbles of what I was working on making, and it's extremely hard to track nibbled calories!!

@odieluv1 Welcome! How's your journey so far?

@GOINSTD12 I look forward to seeing your pottery; sounds like a blast

Well, it's been a day of trials and success. I tracked my whole day ahead of time this morning because I knew that I was making my favorite turkey and black bean enchiladas tonight and I knew I would want two. So I put them in for my supper today and it took up A LOT of calorie room. So the rest of the day I had planned to go a little lighter. Well, things didn't go as planned, and even though I exercised, I went over my daily calorie goal and almost all my exercise calories (which I try not to eat all them back). I was feeling a little bit down, but I know there will be tough days. When my enchiladas were finally done, I put two on my plate. However, after 1, I was completely stuffed! I was able to put back the second one, delete it from my food diary, and now I'm under my calorie goal for the day! Sorry for the long story, but it was an amazing revelation for me -- both the fact that one enchilada filled me up AND the fact that I was able to recognize I was full and put away a food I love for tomorrow!

I hope you all are discovering little awesome things like this on your journey as well! Thanks for reading!

Checking in. It was nice to have a warm welcome, and I'm glad to see I'm not the only newbie joining up.

I did join Jazzercise on Sunday. It was my 2nd class (first is free) and it really kicked my butt. I felt kind of self conscious leaving the gym because the lady behind the counter commented on how red my face was. I have very fair skin, and I'm red all year round, but i guess it was worse because of the workout.

After each class, I've gotten really bad headaches for a few hours after. I've been sure to drink lots of water and eat before and after class, and take Tylenol. The only thing that really helped each time was a nap. Does anyone else have post-exercise headaches? The internet said not to worry unless they're accompanied by some other symptoms, so I'm going to keep my eye on it.

I hit 11,000 steps sunday, which was the first time that's happened since I got my tracker. Feels good

@moody-- Congrats on hitting 11k steps! Don't let the lady's comment make you feel self-conscious. I run miles and miles each week and still get a red face when I push myself extra hard. If it happens again, just say, "well, that's b/c I was working hard." I don't get headaches from exercise; sorry I have no info or experience to offer.

@jackie, anna, odieluv, tracyann, and ohso-- welcome to the thread!

@ohsointricate8 -- you mentioned homework; are you a student or a teacher? or both?

@celtik-- yes, I have that same problem with Ikea! LOL

@kelley -- I think your soggy weather is headed our way. :(

    Monday check-in:
My DH's jeep needs a new u-joint. He thought he could do the repair himself, but had trouble getting the old joint to release. So until he can get it into a shop, we are down to one vehicle. Hence, I had to drop him off and pick him from work today which left no time for the gym. If I didn't still have these essays to grade, it wouldn't be so difficult, but I really need to get them done.

On a positive note, it was a pretty good day food-wise.

    Grading Goals:
    1. 22/41 AP Lit Theory papers

Fitness Goals for the month of April:
    I will run 3x/week and at least 2 5ks/week
    Week 1 = 3/3 runs, 2/2 5k; Week 2 = 1/3 runs, x/2 5k; Week 3 = x/3 runs, x/2 5k; Week 4 = x/3 runs, x/2 5k
I will run a 5k start to finish twice with no walking breaks: 1/2
I will run an 8k three times: 1/3

    You vs Year Challenge:
    143 k done/ 857k to go

    Exercise Goals:
    Sun-- walk gunner DONE
Mon-- walk gunner DONE + gym NOT DONE
    Tues-- rest day
    Wed-- walk gunner + gym
    Thurs-- walk gunner
    Fri-- walk gunner
    Sat-- walk gunner + gym

Wow @kah68 - did you get inundated with rain this weekend like I did? We had rain all day yesterday, it was so heavy coming home from church I thought I wasn't going to make it home. At one point last night we had a bolt of lightning/peal of thunder that seemed like it was right on top of us, it was so loud it sounded like a TNT explosion! Scared the c$@# out of me! Our property is so waterlogged the water can't seep in. Lucky for me our property has a gentle slope downhill so it will drain, but my driveway is getting worse and worse, the potholes have potholes! Gonna have to buy a truckload of gravel soon and try to resurface it. The lid came off my trashcan yesterday (luckily it was empty) and when I took out more trash this morning, it was over half full (a 30 gallon trash can!) after 1 day of rain. Don't know what that translates to in inches of rain but it was a lot!

Today, I was reminded *yet again* how terribly Hungry Me makes food choices. I forgot to pack any dressing for my salad, but I sure wasn't going to eat it dry, and therefore somehow justified going to the Pizza Hut lunch buffet, where I ate probably an entire medium pizza.

That was a lot of red to burn off, even if I was taking advantage of the truly ridiculous calorie burns MFP gives for stationary biking. Although honestly, I'm less upset about the calories than I am about the sodium. I was so proud of myself for finally breaking the 30 lb mark, and now I know that I'll be a week getting rid of all that retained water.

I'm kicking *kitten* at my 100 mile challenge, though. 4 weeks in and I'm averaging 23 miles/wk. I know that's not much compares to a regular 5k runner like @skinnyjeanzbound , but it's certainly a lot more exercise than I've done since I last had a daily PE class.

@Karen ~Ugh, I’m sorry for DHs car problem—what’s worse is that he can’t fix it himself! I hope he can get it fixed quickly.

@jackiefrost1013 ~Great treadmill goals this week! I need the same goal to clean out my desk, I'd probably be amazed at what I'd find.

@Goinstd12 (Tracy)~OMG, yes we are water logged--we received a ton of rain between Saturday/Sunday but not to the extent you guys did south of us. I have a moat in my front yard. Wow. :astonished: I was in my local Target yesterday and between the two huge hail storms we had and all of that rain (with more on the way), their roof is deteriorating—they had removed most of the ceiling tiles inside and had put tarps up to prevent water from leaking onto the floor. There were buckets and bins everywhere to catch what the tarps couldn’t hold back—what a mess. It was like walking into a construction zone, I’m actually surprised they were open.

@badnoodle ~I hate when I forget important things like that. Luckily, if I do there is a deli at work and I can grab some dressing or lemon wedges for my salad—dry salad is no fun. Buffets are dangerous places! I know it’s easier said than done but try not to beat yourself up too much for the set-back—today is a new day so make it a good one. Drink a ton of water to flush the sodium out. Great job with the workout and for the progress you’re making on the 100 mile challenge! :star:

@moodybear2003 ~Great job with Jazzercise, a friend of mine really likes taking those classes—a coworker of mine teaches them too. Like Karen said just ignore what the lady said to you. It is normal for a lot of people to turn red like that when they exercise. :smirk: That being said, you could be turning red because your heart rate is getting too high--do you feel okay throughout your workout? If so, don't worry about it. I’m prone to migraines but years ago used to get post-exercise headaches, mine were mostly due to not eating for energy prior to exercise. Here are a few things you can try to combat them: One is to make sure you are well-hydrated--prior to, during, and post exercise (if you sweat a lot drink about 8oz of Powerade or Gatorade post-exercise to replenish electrolytes--don't choose "zero" or "calorie free" versions, the extra calories won't be detrimental to your day). Another is eating before exercise—not immediately though, about 90-minutes before hand a well-balance snack that includes some carbs for energy and protein (my go-to was typically apple slices with peanut butter). This allows time for the snack to digest. The third thing is to ease into exercise (this is a biggie), especially if you’ve been sedentary for very long—Jazzercise is great but if you feel yourself breathing really hard or feel your heart rate getting really high back off some on your intensity. Do you wear a heart rate monitor? This is a great way to measure your intensity. Post exercise headaches can be caused by high blood pressure also, which is a different issue altogether—do you know if you have high blood pressure?

    Welcome to @olieluv1, @tracyann1983, and @ohsointricate8!

AFM~Weather held out yesterday, but I had some errands to run after work so didn’t get my bike ride in (I suspect the park was under water any way—everything else was :confounded:). PT this afternoon on this pesky ankle—PT continues through the 1st week in May, then I f/u with my ortho (again). Then vacation the following two weeks. My Tuesday goals are the same, just to keep trucking along.

    Activity this week:

Monday~ Short bike ride outside (weather permitting) NOT DONE
    Tuesday~PT
    Wednesday~Rest Day
    Thursday~PT
    Friday~Bike Outside
    Saturday~Rest Day (Spa Day)
    Sunday~Bike Outside

HAPPY NATIONAL GARLIC DAY - APRIL 19
April 19 is National Garlic Day. It’s time to pay homage to those pungent cloves so go ahead and crush one into your favourite savoury dish. While we’re not sure who proclaimed this day of observance or why, we’re just glad someone did.

Good morning all. I love it Tom. Garlic is by far one of my favorite things in the world. So I am feeling pretty good. The darn scale continues to hate me as usual but all this working out is defenitley paying off. I am starting to get some defenite curves in the waistline and I noticed my arm are starting to tone up. The bat wings are shrinking. Praise the lord, lol. We are having a mini heat wave which has me retaining water again so the scale went up and stuck and I know its all water weight so I will just bask in the other changes. Otherwise life is tripping right along. My son has decided to work out with me and plan our workouts. Down side I am not getting to some of the classes I was enjoying but am still working out and this motivates him to workout as well.
@kah and Tracy hope the rain lets up soon. I think mother nature switched our weather with your guys :)
@karen sorry to hear about Dh car. Car repairs are always the worst.

Well time to go wake up the boy so we can head to the gym. I already walked the dogs six laps today so the activity fornt looking good. Just got to keep the food under control. have a great day all

Hi everyone! I read all your posts, but have missed too many to reply to everyone! :D I just hope you are all feeling great and know that I am right there with you -- trials and success! Welcome fellow new people to the thread!

I had a very good experience from Sunday to now. It won't sound good until the end though (haha): I went way over my calories on Sunday (I'm talking 800 over) and it was one of the only days since joining MFP that I just felt like I couldn't work out at all, so I didn't. Of course, I was a little down on myself about how poorly I did, but Mondays are my weigh-in days and I knew I had to get on the scale. For the first time since I joined this site, I didn't lose weight at my weigh-in. In fact, I gained .6 lbs.

So this all sounds bad, right? Wrong! It totally motivated me to work harder this week. Monday and today I've been doing great at eating within my calorie range, and I have a renewed vigor for working out. In fact, I was relieved that I got my first big screw-up out of the way. The fact that I didn't give up because of one bad day (like I would have done in the past) made me feel accomplished and like this time WILL be the time I stick to these healthy changes. It was a fantastic feeling!

Can't wait to keep reading about your own experiences!

@skinnyjeanzbound - I LOVE your name on here. so great. I'm a student! It's my last semester.. actually, last 3 weeks. So I'm in the homestretch!

Thanks for all the warm welcomes! :)

@Sgt_Pepper33 Thats such a victory! I'm glad you're able to motivate yourself like that! I get so frustrated with myself if I don't see a loss when I step on the scale, but then I take a few days off from weighing myself (I way everyday for accountability) and try to work it out in the gym.

@kah68 Thank you for the advice! Maybe I wasn't eating enough. I had a small bowl of life cereal, some almonds and a few baby carrots. It was a morning class, i was worried about eating before hand (before my first class i had a slice of leftover pizza - OOPS). My friend gave me a Nuun tablet to try, but i put it in a 24 oz bottle instead of 16 and it tasted nasty, so i really didn't drink a lot. Next time I will bring plain water and a Gatorade. I like to buy the mini bottles sold in the 8 pks.

I wanted to go to another class tomorrow, but I'm booked helping my sister with a project for work for the next 2 days. She is a manager at a casino, and they have little decorating contests from time to time. We'll be painting a terra cotta pot to with the logo of the Deli she runs, and the design of their baskets.

My goal is to get a short walk in before painting each day. I got a 20 minute walk in today and met my 6,000 step goal.

    Hi guys!

I see a few more newlings, so welcome to you all!

@moddy-- I agree with kelley's advice about using a heart rate monitor if you are new to exercise. When I started running, it really helped me to push myself without concern about overdoing it. I never replaced my last one when the chest strap broke-- I've been hemming and hawing over which fitbit to get-- but if I'm running on a treadmill, I still check my HR to remind myself to push a little harder if it's low.

@ohso-- congrats on finishing school in a few weeks! I see you're from DG, IL-- I'm from Chicago and currently live in the northern suburbs.

@sgtpepper-- glad you turned your overage into motivation. So often we let those slips pull us down instead of using them as learning experiences to lift ourselves up. You've got this!!

@tammy & kelley-- yeah, fortunately when I called our local garage today, they are able to do the repair tomorrow and it won't cost too much. I'm so glad I only have one more extra-early morning to drive the DH to work. I'm definitely NOT a morning person! :)

@tom-- love the HDT quote, and garlic-- yum!!

    @jackie-- great goals!!

@badnoodle-- 23 miles a week is awesome!! Even with my running added to walking my dog, I probably only average about 20 miles/week during the school year. I do better over the summer due to having so much more time to devote to running. Right now I'm really struggling with the work/life balance-- it's crunch time to get essays graded for my AP students prior to their exam in about 3 weeks. I know it will get better, but right now, I hate that I don't have more time to go to the gym.

@tracy-- wow, that's a lot of rain!! Hope you and kelley dry out soon.

    Tuesday Goals:
Not making much progress on the essays due to writing conferences with my juniors who turn in their research papers this Friday. They take up most of my prep periods and lunch, so I only got 2 more papers graded today. After work, I had to come home to let gunner out, then drive to pick up DH, then follow him to the mechanic to drop off his jeep. Needless to say, I didn't get anything else done tonight.

    Grading Goals:
    1. 24/41 AP Lit Theory papers

Fitness Goals for the month of April:
    I will run 3x/week and at least 2 5ks/week
    Week 1 = 3/3 runs, 2/2 5k; Week 2 = 1/3 runs, x/2 5k; Week 3 = x/3 runs, x/2 5k; Week 4 = x/3 runs, x/2 5k
I will run a 5k start to finish twice with no walking breaks: 1/2
I will run an 8k three times: 1/3

    You vs Year Challenge:
    143 k done/ 857k to go

    Exercise Goals:
    Sun-- walk gunner DONE
Mon-- walk gunner DONE + gym NOT DONE
    Tues-- rest day
    Wed-- walk gunner + gym
    Thurs-- walk gunner
    Fri-- walk gunner

    Good morning everyone.

    Happy Lima Bean Respect Day
Today is Lima Bean Respect Day! Did you know that lima beans are incredibly good for you? They are filled with nutritious fiber, potassium, iron, copper, and manganese. Lima beans are also low in fat and contain protease inhibitors that stall the development of cancerous cells. Lima beans may not be your favorite healthy vegetable, but today is the day to show them some respect!
Humans have been cultivating lima beans since 6000 BC. Today, people use them in recipes for soups, spreads, casseroles, and salads. In Japan, green baby lima beans are an important ingredient in bean paste, which is a popular dessert. Succotash, a dish usually found in the southern region of the United States, combines lima beans, corn, and chili peppers.
To celebrate Lima Bean Respect Day, enjoy some tasty lima beans cooked your favorite way!

” No diet will remove all the fat from your body because the brain is entirely fat. Without a brain, you might look good, but all you could do is run for public office.” ~George Bernard Shaw :)

Hey everyone ... just wanted to pop in and say hello and it's great that the thread has gotten so many new posters!

I'm starting to succeed at the 'less computer time' project ... it's down to half a day instead of all day! Still behind in my house chore projects and the yard work is now on my To-Do list also. I started to cut the grass in the backyard a couple of days ago but had to stop because of shortness of breath and a too rapid heartrate episode. Gonna give it another go today. I was feeling pretty good, heartrate wise, when I didn't renew my lawn service contracts this past winter and now it's up to me to keep the grounds looking decent!

Weight-wise, I'm losing ground and I know that part of it is from the edema I've been struggling with the past several months, however my clothes feel and fit the same so I'm going by that until this resolves itself. Sitting down less hours (reduced PC time, yay) is starting to help and I am able to put my sneakers on again.

I've taken the time to read through the last few pages and find everyone's posts very interesting but don't want to do personals because I want to get off the computer and go cut grass.
    Follow through with consistent focus
    Niki
