OK, a big bucket o' personals! But first, my BIG NSV -- I have just run, very very slowly, for twenty minutes without stopping. 1.17 miles. So I have run more than a mile without stopping. I am pretty sure I have never ever done that before.

For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere who are finding it hard at the moment, it's natural. As the nights draw in, your body goes 'I must store food during the plentiful autumn for the dark winter days to come.' Ha! But we're not going to let it, are we? Try to get plenty of sunlight while you can (this is really important for Brits and other people in improbably northern places). And be gentle on yourselves.

@nzenczak -- I really think that hitting the calorie target, or at least not exceeding it by more than 500 calories, is the key here. Exercise is fantastic (because it gives you more calories and suppresses your appetite), and eating the right things is fantastic (because it makes you less hungry and you digest it all better, and it gives you great energy for exercise), but if you don't hit the calorie targets you mostly won't lose, and conversely, if you hit the targets, you'll probably lose over time even if you're a junk-food-eating couch potato. Doesn't seem fair, does it?

@Kelley -- we can be in the slow runners club; my 20 minutes of continuous running was supposed to be at a 15:30 pace but actually ended up at 17. That's only a tiny shade faster than my normal walking pace. MFP doesn't have an exercise setting for anything slower than 5mph! I've been cutting the minutes down and then scoring it as that. I am not convinced by rest days. Or rather, I am convinced by rest days, but I don't think light exercise that's well within your ability affects the rest. Like a light walk, or a bit of badminton with the kids.

@Mrsbonnie72 -- we're all rooting for you and everyone has rough weeks sometimes. Just try to focus on doing a bit every day.

@Katrena -- If you've done loads of garden work then your muscles will be retaining water like mad. So it might not be as bad as you think.

@Tina -- My DH put on 5lbs this weekend! And he didn't do anything too outrageous. That will all be bloating and it will come right off.

@Kris -- so sorry to hear about your cat; I'm not suprised you're frantic.

@MNwalkingqueen -- ooh are these kids in your house? If my nephew ever says 'you're not my mum' I say 'how this works is that when you're in somebody's home you follow the rules of that home. Now, your mum may have different rules, but while you're here we don't have phones at the dinner table/jump on the couch/swear/whatever it is this time.' Of course I know perfectly well that his mum doesn't allow him to do any of those things! You are going to have to get your partner to agree to back you up *at least that much*. Good luck. I think blended families are really hard.

@karenleona -- I am sure you can stay on track if you take it one day at a time. How long do you have before surgery to lose the ten pounds?

@Kittyx2 -- I think the key with exercise is trying to find something you enjoy. Although I don't mind running as much as I thought I would, the things I love are dance mat and badminton. There was a thing running here for the olympics where they were encouraging people to try an olympic sport -- with a big list of all the sports and where you could do them. I thought it would be really cool to try and do all of them! Just once, of course. I didn't have the time, energy or money -- but I think if you hate all exercise, then just trying loads of different things once each is a really good way to find something you love. Lots of people love Zumba, too.

@Lauriek -- Why do you have to stay below 50g of carbs? That's very very low carb. Even 150g isn't bad. Are you being a bit hard on yourself?

@Liz -- One of the things that winds me up more than anything is when I've made a meal in advance for my family and they whine about having to heat it up, or having to make some rice to go with it, or whatever. Or forget that it's there and get takeaway. Oh yes, and you want a pedometer for days when you're trogging round a corn maze. You'd still be just as tired but reading the pedometer would give you a buzz.

@Cath -- I'm so happy for you, your family, and your little Luna!

    @Beth -- Welcome! It's just one step at a time I think...

@Christine -- so glad you finished your walk and are planning a 5k! That's awesome.

Good Morning! I am just petrified for the folks on the East Coast! The news shows are doing a great job of making people aware of just how dangerous it is and helping people evacuate, but I feel so helpless! I fear for all the people who will be left without electricity for so long. It will be more than just inconvenient, it will be ruthless. My prayers are with them.

I had a great day yesterday - went for a good walk in my condo, in the halls, which is a conveninet way to get exercise without going out in the weather. I had been just adverse to doing it before but I really enjoyed it. It reminded me of a job I had when I was young and used to deliver mail through out a big hospital building and got teased about my good posture and got called "Miss America" - Oh to be called that again!

I officially have THE most amazing mom in the universe. I was freaking out so bad about MowMow because i couldnt afford the vet visit, especially since im sure theyll want to pull blood.

My mom sends me a modest check each November for a family business venture. I called her in tears this morning about the cat and she said she would wire it directly on Wednesday(after the storm). THEN she emailed back and said she was sending 200 extra "just in case" and if the cat didnt need it to buy myself some pretty new "skinny" clothes. Im sure the vet will let me post date a check for Wedensday.

I had to share, i am so incredibly blessed to have an amazing and loving family.

Monday Check In::: I had a not so good weekend. Saturday started out fine. But then realized we were going to my In-laws for their yearly hayride/bonfire. Well I wasn't planning on drinking.....I had one bowl of chili, 3 hot wings and a brownie s'more. So the food wasn't the problem it was the alcohol. I'm not sure how much I had...BUT it was a great time :)
Now onto Sunday..well too much to drink the night before (I wasn't hanging) but didn't feel 100%. So breakfast and lunch decisions were horrible (but yummy)
This weekend I also did a test batch of cupcakes and cake pops for my daughters birthday party this weekend. I am making panda bear cupcakes so wanted to test decorate them. And want to make cake pops as well and had never made them before so had to try them too. So needless to say there was way too much sweets this weekend. But today is a new day.
I broke down and bought so metamucil (thanks Robin :) So hoping this will help me become regular...
My daughter went trick or treating on Friday and was in a parade on Sunday for kids in costumes. It was fun :) And she gets to dress up again for school on Wednesday...and were going trick or treating again (only to my husbands family in another town not all over town ugh no more candy)

Either way the scale says my weight is up again but again I am still miserably bloated....I did get to finally go...thanks to the beer lol Either way have a magnificent Monday!!!

@Alison---CONGRATS on the running! That is fantastic!!! I need to start running again I really do miss it.

@MyMowMow---So happy for you that you will be able to get your cat taken care of! So blessed to have such a wonderful Mother :)

How wonderful! It's just awesome to have helpful, loving, supportive mom in your life. I know from experience. Hope this is a good sign that everything is going to be just fine with your kitty.

    Hi everyone!

I was sick Thursday night. I have not vomited in a few years and yes I still hate it. I had more tests at the Doctors on Friday and still was not feeling too good from stomach and lack of sleep. I had an eco-cardio ultra sound. Some of my other tests came back and now I have to go see a specialist because of high PSA in my blood. So medically I’m falling apart. The good news is this week I will quit smoking for good. I will not smoke any more starting NOW.

Lin and AngelikaLumie- I had to stop wearing my wedding ring because it kept falling off. Amy said she would get it resized for me but I have not seen it back yet. I noticed that I am getting thinner fingers and wrists also. My watches fit way differently than they did a year ago.

Alison- great job runningbig-thumbs-up.gif, I know I could not do that. I have to find an exercise I like but I am not sure running is my thing.

The farmers market is really downsizing now that a lot of the crops are finishing for the year. I am going to start going to Trader Joe’s more often because of that. Their produce is very good. Much of it is organic and very fresh. I think I will be getting lots of stuff I have never tried before. The other night I had red quinoa and it was pretty good. I’m blaming that on you Skinnyjeanzbound. I also got some red lentils which I have never tried before. They have a sprouted wheat bread that I really like and this morning I had some toasted with some Trader Joe’s Pumpkin Cream Cheese and it was wonderful. I really wanted to try the Pumpkin butter but it was sold out. I might have to go back again to get some. If they do not have it I will make my own from scratch which maybe better as I can adjust it to my liking.

I have been not feeling well since last Thursday night so I have been very inactive. That changes today! I am going to get the lab set up at work this week no matter what. I will be more active.

Best Wishes for everyone in the path of Sandy!

    Tom

Monday Check-In: Well, mostly, I'm just hunkered down, waiting for Sandy. I did what I could to prepare over the weekend, now I'm hoping no trees fall on my house and that I can make it to work tonight and that my relief can make it in tomorrow morning. Today was my weekly weigh-in and the scale says I lost six pounds! Unfortunately, I don't quite believe it, so I haven't logged it yet -- will see where it falls before work tonight and log then.

@Robin -- I have a beginner's kayak with a very stable hull, and I only paddle in calm lakes and lazy rivers. It's great fun, though, and a great workout! Still over 300 pounds (even with the scale victory), so I can't think of myself as in "great shape," but I'm working on it! I've always been pretty active for my sizeand I'm very blessed to still be able to do most of the things I love.

@MyMowMow -- I hope your MowMow gets better soon! I have a 14-year old dog, Ruckus, who has accompanied me through my darkest moments and who is my very best buddy in the universe (don't tell her sister, Lily), so I can imagine how you feel! So glad your mom is willing and able to help you out!!

Monday check-in: After my walk on Saturday I blew it and had a 2 day binge which I haven't done in months. Realized I have a habit of undermining myself when I complete a goal I set for myself. All of the jeers from my father and mother come back to haunt me and I don't think I deserve to succeed. You would think at 62 I would have gotten rid of all my baggage by now, but no, still trying to erase old tapes. I did deserve to complete my walk as I had worked toward it for sometime and I did a good job. I don't have to binge over a success. Does anyone else have these crazy ideas or habits? You would think success would lead to happiness and building of self-confidence, but doesn't seem the case for me. Well enough of this, I am back on track and am not going to let 2 bad days beat me. I am going to prevail!!! Thank you all for being here to help motivate me and support me when I am shakey. Praying for all those in the NE that the hurricane will spare them damage and power outages.

MOwMOw, praying that your kitty gets well soon.
Morgori, hope you are feeling better by now, I know you can kick those cigs.
To all others love you, take care all.

Thanks for the good thoughts and prayers all.
The vet would NOT let me post date a check for the blood tests. I have to go back on Thursday to have that done.
They gave me antibiotics because he has a high fever and an appetite stimulant to hold us over.

It's a great thing I only have 4.00 in the bank because I'd be eating my weight in junk food right now. I get so stressed when something is wrong with my little Schmooface.

Cath- I live in Maryland on the east coast. Hurricane Sandy is expected to come ashore somewhere between Deleware and New Jersy. Heading up the coast they are the next two states and not that far away. The storm is expected to come ashore anywhere between 6 and 8pm. Then it will continue with strong winds and lots of rain throughout the night. Check out the weather channel or Fox news for more details about the weather. Hurricanes are very large storms that start in topical areas and thrive on warm water. This storm is merging with a cold front from the west and becoming a super storm. My state is being battered on both ends. The mountain area (Western MD) will be getting a blizzard tonight 10+ inches of snow and the coast is getting rain 10+inches. You can drive the whole state in one day about 5 hours.

MyMowMow- I hope your kitty is better soon.

Natalie- I am dealing with Sandy as well and the rain is terrible today. Where do you live?

Allison- You are doing a great job with the 5K prep. You are amazing. Congrats on running for 1.17miles straight that is amazing.

Angelia-So happy that you found someone who will listen to you and help you to deal with stress of life.

Helen- It is good to know that you are back on the wagon and have found your groove again. Line dancing is fun.

Kittyx2- I know this storm is moving very slowly. I hope you are safe and storm ready. Congrats on losing 2 pounds last week.

Ushkil- Glad you were able to stop by for a visit. Hope things calm down for you soon.

Tom- Hope you feel better soon. Trader Joe’s is a great place to shop.

Lmacbethl- Hope Sandy does not cause you any trouble and no downed trees or power outages. I hope you have lost those 6 pounds.

Mrs. Bonnie- Congrats on losing 17 pounds. Don’t worry about the numbers as they are just numbers. They provide a great way to measure progress since many times we tend to lose inches before weight.

Christine- I can relate to undermining myself as well. I totally did that once I was below 200 pounds. Since that time, I have keep having trouble staying focused on the weight loss. We can make this work and we will stop the self=sabotaging behavior. Congrats on it only lasting two days. Mine has lasted for months.

Robin- Sorry about your car, they do get expensive. I like the November challenges.

Wow- lots of personals today and I am pleased that I had the time to do them. Schools are closed today and tomorrow due to Hurricane Sandy. So I am doing my best not to eat my way through the day. Thought process is that I need to eat it n case we lose power and I don’t want it to spoil. No concentration today to get the school work done but will keep trying.

Check-in: Just dealing with Hurricane Sandy and the length of this storm is driving me to boredom. At least with snowstorms I can go outside and shovel, this storm I am stuck inside. The rain is constantly a driving force supported by strong wind sustained and gusts. Most of the businesses in this area have closed for the day and they don’t want people on the roads. I hope tomorrow will be better weather wise but no guarantees. Who knows schools may be cancelled again on Wednesday due to power outages. The downside is that school will go to the end of June at this rate and winter is not here yet.

    Have a great day everyone.

Hi everyone. My heart goes out to all of you in the path of the storm. I hope you all stay healthy and well. I also wanted to tell mymowmow I am thinking of hr and hoping her kitty is alright. Well I just got done doing my workout that I promised myself I would. I remember why I hate exercise so mch now. It was just a little 15 min walking workout and I figured after watching it that would be a good place to start and build from. Well after 10 min I had to stop because I was afraid I was going to vomit. Everytime I try to exercise like this I just feel like a failure. I am constantly seeing people as big or bigger then me doing more and i just get so frustrated. The whole thing even managed to ruin the nice scale victory I had this week. I lost seven pounds though part of that was weigh day was the same day I started tom last week but still put me at the 25 mile mark and I was so happy. Now I can think about is I cant even walk briskly.

@Christin - Im so impressed it only lasted a few days. I fell off the wagon last week and it lasted a WEEK. I wish I had your strength to keep it down to 2 days.

@JTCost - I can relate to how you feel. That's how I always felt when I would try to exercise. I started watching Biggest Loser and Jillian and Bob acted like it was pretty normal to vomit and to just work through it and keep hydrating so... I yakked my way through the first few weeks. I kept telling myself i was purging all those fat toxins. :ohwell: Stay with it. It'll get easier, I promise. You just have to push through it.

I gave kitty his meds from the vet. Then he had a good nap. When he woke up I wiped him down with a warm damp washcloth and then brushed him. He's always so clean and has been too sick the past few days to groom. I thought it might make him feel better. It sure made him affectionate

Well, I made it to work, now just hoping my relief relieves me in about 12 hours, sigh. And being away from home sort of stinks, as I am worried about trees falling and power going out -- not that I could do anything about it anyway, but I would feel better knowing what's going on... a tree fell on someone in my town, first confirmed casualty in Connecticut, only a mile or two from where I live, and a bunch of friends are without power. Hearts go out to everyone in the storm's path tonight! Stay safe!!!

I weighed myself before work and settled on a 3.8 pound loss for the week, which seems much more realistic than 6 pounds. Unfortunately, each time I step off and back on the scale, it goes to a different number -- within a four-pound range -- so I think it must be time for new batteries. Will have to see what next week's official weigh-in brings...

To everyone on the U.S. East Coast, please stay safe during Sandy. We are hundreds of miles away here in Chicago and there are still wind and lake advisories due to the immense power of the storm.

@kris--hope mow mow is feeling better soon. I chuckled a little at your story about "bathing" him. I've only given gunner 2 baths in the 5+ yrs we've had him. He's just too big, so we take him to the salon. It's funny though, b/c when he got attacked and was in the cone for 10 days, my husband realized that he would need some assistance cleaning his "privates." The funnier part is that DH actually took care of it--that's definitely a task I would have expected him to push off on me--"he's YOUR dog..."

@jt--don't look at it as failing to complete 15 minutes, look at it as succeeding at exercising for 10 whole minutes--b/c that's really what it is! :drinker:

@laurie--sorry you are stuck inside and bored. If it's any consolation, I would love 2 days to stay inside and catch up on school work. (However, like you, I would probably avoid it too :blushing: )

Regarding November challenge--I like robin's idea to continue the carb challenge, as I did miserably in Oct. I know I personally need to give myself a miles challenge to get ready for my Turkey Trot, so if anyone wants to join in on that, we can cheer each other on.

@robin--sorry about your car! If it helps at all think about it as 3-4 car payments vs. 12 car payments for a newer car.

@tom--guilty as charged! :blushing: I LOVE red quinoa better than white or black, but it's much harder to find at a reasonable price. Costco only carries the white in bulk.

@tina--hang in there and the bloat will go away! I'm in the same boat--I guess you could say we're in a "bloat boat." I crack myself up!

@alison--congrats on the 20 minute run--as long as you are running, pace isn't important right now. I also agree with your rest day philosophy--I still walk gunner on my "rest day."

    Hi uskii!! :flowerforyou:

@lin & angelika--I am having ring issues as well. They were already loose, but with the colder temps my fingers are even thinner, so I'm on the verge of leaving them at home. Not ready to get them re-sized yet as I still have 30-40 lbs minimum to lose and don't want to pay for re-sizing twice. I may go look for some of those temporary sizers, but not sure where to look. :ohwell:

@christine--are you planning to do a 5k?!?! I think I missed that when I skimmed the posts the other day. So proud of you!!

Ok--I know there were other personals, but I've been on here for awhile and still need to grade some journals.

    Monday check-in:
Just feeling completely overwhelmed with work right now. I didn't get enough done this weekend b/c I had to visit some friends who are moving to Switzerland in a few weeks. Between that and trying to get my house in some semblance of order, the weekend got away from me much too quickly.

Not even going to plan an exercise routine this week. I had to attend a wake after school today (so sad, a 24 yo colleague's father passed from cancer). I still managed to take gunner for a pretty good walk when I got home. I wanted to run or go to the gym tomorrow, but I have so much work to do before grades are due on Wed. :grumble: Then Wed. I have to stay home to hand out candy to trick-or-treaters and Thurs. I have Parent/Teacher conferences from 1-7 pm. I might take robin's lead and at least try to walk through the building during my break.

    Grading Goals:
    1. 59/59 Thoreau essays DONE!!
    2. x/59 Montana 1948 vocab
    3. 30/59 M1948 character journals FINISHING THESE TONIGHT!!!
    4. x/11 AP analysis activities--I'm going to leave these for 2nd quarter
    5. prep poetry prompts for Monday DONE!!!
