My Pizza Day Experiment - A Comparison

I did a little experiment yesterday to see what would happen if I ate a ton of pizza, but still stayed within my calorie limit and mostly within my macros. I'll admit I did go over on carbs, but I already have my carbs set at a very low 25%, so even when I'm eating clean, I don't really worry about going over on them.

So what happened?

Well I'm going to give y'all a couple links to check out. First is yesterday's diary of a good breakfast, but then a crappy (IMO) lunch + dinner.

http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/diary/CoachReddy?date=2013-04-26

What do we notice? I'm within my calories, I've slightly gone over on carbs, but let's look at MICROnutrients:

potassium: 390mg
fiber: 17g
sodium: 5,244mg
sugar: 54g
Vit A: 322%
Vit C: 12%
Calcium: 42%
Iron: 18%

I'm severely under on potassium, fiber, vitamin C, calcium, AND iron. That's not good folks.

Now let's compare the day of "clean" eating: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/diary/CoachReddy?date=2013-04-06

Also within my calories, within my macros, all in all a really great day. Let's check out the micronutrients:

potassium: 4,694mg
fiber: 39g
sodium: 2,419mg
sugar: 84g
Vit A: 439%
Vit C: 317%
Calcium: 86%
Iron: 81%

My potassium level is perfect, fiber is great, sodium is great, sugar is great (little higher than the pizza day, but that's because of fruit), and my vitamin and mineral levels are ALL significantly higher. Not perfect on calcium and iron, but I also take a multivitamin to round that out.

Instead of drawing my own conclusion, I'll let you draw your own. Is there more to health than simply meeting your carb/fat/protein ratios? Is IIFYM the be all and end all? Discuss.

What did Domino's give you for calcium, potassium, and iron--and how did you get those figures? They aren't in the MFP listing for this pizza as far as I can see. Domino's says they put 184g of cheese on a medium pan pizza--that's over 6.5 ounces of cheese, which should provide about 130% of a person's daily calcium requirement.

haha damn MFP database, yeah I looked it up and it would bring both the iron and calcium levels to ~ 100% on the day. so mineral-wise we're good. I mean, personally I'd argue that fortified iron isn't as bio available as the iron naturally found in foods, but nonetheless I'll give the mineral column to the pizza.

unfortunately everywhere else it pretty much fails in a big way.

Just checked last week - random couple of days:

    Monday:

    Vit A: 123%
    Vit C: 118%
    Calcium: 209%
    Iron: 183%
    Fiber: 28g

    Tuesday:

    Vit A: 939%
    Vit C: 440%
    Calcium: 170%
    Iron: 108%
    Fiber: 57g

Oh look, my unclean eating habits must therefore be healthier than yours.

Also, Monday I had 2 poptarts, some chocolate and of course ice cream.

To note, potassium info is missing for lots of foods, including pizza.

I think I have some bad news for you about pineapple and Vitamin C--or good news, depending on how you look at it. Domino's puts 99g of pineapple on their medium pizzas. 100g contains 80% of your day's allowance of C. Add the 12% you had at breakfast, plus more from the tomato sauce, and you're almost certainly there.

where did i say your eating habits were "unclean" and that you couldn't have pop tarts and chocolate and ice cream?

i'm simply saying that making ALL of your food "crap", even if it fits your macros, leaves you deficient.

that's not at all what you do Sara.

so then by the same token, my 4,600+ day should be higher too, yes?

...to learn more about how I can reach my macros AND micros by eating mostly franchise pizza. Awesome.

Why are you using a strawman again that has no basis in what 99% of people actually do then?

You seem to get IIFYM one minute and then completely take a step back with that understanding.

IIFYM is not 'eat whatever the heck you want and bedamned with the micros' - I have linked you discussions that explain what it actually is before but you are not hearing it. If you want to argue about eating what you call 'crap' all day v eating clean, don;t bring IIFYM into it - that is *not* what it means.

It's even easier if you look at your diary first, then build the pizza to suit it. Imagine if Coach Reddy had added some chicken, roasted red pepper, and spinach to that pizza, ramping up the protein and vitamins. Yum!

    OH SNAP

Yes, pizza is as pizza does....it doesn't have to be a nutritional grenade by definition.

Yes, strawman comparison is made of straw...which is low in potassium, for the record.

Quite possibly which sucks for you because too much potassium is actually harmful.

Thank you for sharing this. It was interesting to look at. My conclusion... You can stay under calories, but can you really give your body those nutritions? You really opened my eyes on wanting to eat a little more clean. I hate giving up stuff, but I could work into my live an 80/20 or 90/10 clean/ processed.

Holy Jesus! You had a single splurge day in your many years of eating twigs and berries and you survived. You're lucky you didn't go into a fiber and vitamin C deficiency coma.

I for one am highly impressed with your reductio ad absurdum experiment to prove something against which no one argued.

I am now sadly depressed and guilt ridden that I ate massive greasy tacos and had a margarita for lunch. I may limit myself to 3 beers for dessert tonight to atone for my dirty dirty diet.

100g broccoli = 149% of your RDA for Vit C alone plus 3g of fiber...good choice

You're information is not welcome here as it does not help Coach's argument that pizza=death on dough.

Coach, what is it that you coach anyway? Tee-ball or soccer or what?

I am sorry man, I just can't get past the fact that you didn't take advantage of this opportunity to actually eat something tasty. Domino's?! WTF, were you scared that good pizza might make you chance your mind about "clean" eating 100 % of the time?
