I love this thread. It inspired me to bite the bullet and get a trainer to help me out with starting a weightlifting program. My first session was last night, and man am I weak! But my trainer was super-encouraging, sensitive to my limitations (when I was clearly losing steam!), and I saw a diverse group of people in that weight room of all sizes, shapes, sexes, and abilities - it gave me a good boost.
So I plan on posting my progress on here by my first "real" MFP anniversary in January. Thank you all for being so inspiring and encouraging to women like me who were - and still are - a little intimidated by the weight room.13 -

I don't think you can really see a huge difference yet, but I'm happy so far! I've been doing Strong Lifts for about 6 weeks now, top pic is day 1, bottom pic is about 3 weeks in, and pic in the leggings is a couple of days ago. So pleased with the difference in my stomach!

As of last week. Always hated my arms, so I'm loving the progress in them. Pictures are about 10 months apart.

Random question for you awesome ladies--anyone have lifting shoes they love?
Where did you buy them? I'm going to get some for Christmas but I have no idea where to look. I'd like a brick and mortar store bc I have kinda wide feet--how do you find such a place?0 -
I deadlift in Chucks, low style. I bought Addidas Powerlift shoes for squats. I don't know if they are good for wide feet, though. My Chucks are narrow, too but I have narrow feet. I bought my Powerlift shoes off the Internet because I couldn't find a brick and mortar store with lifting shoes. I just made sure I could return them in necessary.3

Have you maybe tried maybe looking at a hard core gym?(Like a body builder/strongman/power lifters gym.)They sometimes will sell lifting shoes, straps etc....0 -
I have the option of lifting barefoot which I love...or sock feet as I have a home gym...

Now, I have a silly question. I know this is a "women only" thread, but...Is there a similar program for men? Everything I can find about lifting for men concentrates on "getting huge". Not interested in that.

You won't "get huge" by accident. Most of the lifting programs followed by the ladies in this thread are solid programs for any gender and can be used to build strength. Here is another great list of programs:

Thank you for saying so. I have been lurking here. Started lifting at home since April, and I do it barefoot. Thought I was dangerous and abnormal but really like the grounded feeling so have kept it up.

stronglifts 5x5 or starting strength is not a female program...they are programs...they do not build bulk by mistake as mentioned...

I don't have the option of lifting barefoot, but I've started wearing my shoes with the least padding in the soles. I feel like I can really dig my heels in with them.
Last week, I changed up my diet, too. I added more calories, a lot of which are protein, some are fats, and some are carbs. My doctor's concerned I may be at risk for osteoporosis, so I want to put on some muscle. In April, if I need to, I'll go back on my stricter diet.2 -

I love this thread.. I have been lifting with my personal trainer. I am probably not quite in the 'heavy' category yet but I have achieved my goal of pushing 100kg on a 45kg sled after 100 days. On the first day I struggled just with the sled on its own. In pounds that is an improvement from 99lb to 319lb. I have lost 39lb in weight but more importantly my actual measurements are equivalent to what they were when I was another 25lb lighter and my underbust measurement is actually equivalent to when I was 40lb lighter. I can see what a difference the lifting is making to my shape. My trainer uses German Body Composition training. Still too much body fat for any definition to be visible on the outide though!11
