  • I started off at 220 lbs, 5'4.5" - pretty sure I was well over 40% bodyfat. I recall my wrist measurement being 7".
    I am now 150 lbs, 5'5" (all that weight isn't holding me down anymore and I stand taller) and my bodyfat is more around 23-24%. My wrist measures 6.25" - so I definitely qualify as a medium to large framed woman. The beautiful thing is - even though I have a larger frame (very athletic build) - the addition of heavy lifting to my routine has made me wayyy more compact than I ever imagined. I'm even taking a size 6 in pants/jeans now - never thought that was even POSSIBLE given my shape/size. So let it be known - just because you may be considered "large frame" doesn't mean you have to settle for large sizes or higher weights. It can be done. I've lost 70 lbs by eating 1600-1800 cals (or more) each day and not over-exercising, but working out smarter. :D
    These "before" body pics were from last year in August - 187 lbs or so and 36% bodyfat (as best as I could tell) - so I was much larger than this when I began - just never took photos because I was ashamed.

    I joined MFP when I had lost about 30lbs and am currently down a little over 50lbs. The picture on the left was around 280.. or more.. and the one on the right is the same shirt about 40 lbs lighter. Thank goodness! Definitely a large frame, will probably always have one, but when I'm down the full 120 I think I will have a shape to be proud of.

    I did the wrist test. I have two inches between fingers. I definatly have a large frame.

    Here is my before and during. I still have a long way to go. I'm 5'8 and I want to get down to 180 and see how I like it there before I decide to go down more. I want to be curvy but fit.

    Well, I started with diet first in late 2010....then added in some light intensity exercise (i.e. walking, then jogging eventually) in mid 2011. Then started doing TurboFire and Chalean Extreme in late 2011. Lost most of the weight by January 2012 (60#). Then started lifting in March and have lost only 10# this year (since January) but went from sz 10/12 to sz 6/small 8. The heavy lifting is what really changed my body in terms of making it look better - more compact, curvy but not just fatty curvy, strong curvy. I'd tell anyone to start lifting right away (wish I had known when I first started) because it makes SUCH a difference in the outcome of how your body will look (i.e. "skinny fat" or "lean and fit"). I rarely do cardio now (like never) - I pretty much stopped cardio in the spring/summer. Okay, sorry, I rabbit-trailed. But yeah - the end of 2010 I was wearing sz 18-pushing a 20, the end of 2011 - I was sz 10/12, and the end of 2012 I will be a solid 6. I stopped focusing on the pounds on the scale once I hit 160# since I knew I was more interested in my body fat percentage going down. :D

    This is great info and very inspiring. Do you use a specific lifting routine now? Or do you just make your own?

  • These stories are so inspiring. I am over 5'9" and consider myself to be large frame. My wrist is 6 3/4 in. I know when I was thinner, though, it was quite a bit smaller. Not sure how accurate the whole wrist size thing is considering some people (like me) do have fat wrists...lol. Thanks for sharing everyone. I am officially inspired!!

    Large FRAME- what exactly is that? I know that there is a formula (certain measurements, etc..) to determine if you really do have a large frame or big boned, etc... How do you know.

    In my mind I have a large frame. I am 5'7" and have broad shoulders, wide rib cage,thunder thighs, and huge (ugly) hands and feet.

    ha ha, just curious what you would call a large frame?

    Some say that if you put your middle finger and thumb around your wrist and they cant touch, you are large framed. Other people say that is BS and there is no such thing as "large framed".

    I am 5' 7" and once upon a time, I weighed 150lbs. I had to starve myself to get that thin, I was skin and bones, totally unhealthy, and looked horrible and I STILL wore a 36D bra. Other people would consider that overweight. I think that I have a large frame... big man hands and feet (not sexy AT all), broad shoulders, child bearing hips (wide across from hip bone to hip bone), etc.

    I dont have pics... sorry. I have lost 35lbs and am down from a size 22W to a comfortable 18.

    SW - 257 (SNUG 22w)
    CW - 222 (comfy/loose 18)
    1st GW - 199
    Ultimate GW - 175 - we will see what happens after that.

    It also depends on your height. For the average woman it would probably be more than 6" wrist equals large frame. For women taller like me (above 5'10") it is more like 6.5" or more. Same for women who are shorter, you'd cut the average down a bit. Something along those lines.

    i agree with the wrist measurement thing. but ur bones have to stick out. u can try ur elbow too.
    i think some people have bigger and smaller frames but it changes your goal size by like less than 10kg (20lb). so only people close to their goal should be worried about frame size. if you have more than 10kg (20lb) to lose, then frame size isn't going to change much.

    I must be off the scale because my wrists are 6.5" and I'm 5'4". Lolz. My hips are large too and my elbow breath, another way to measure frame, is large at 2.75in too.

    I've been told that I have a large frame too and that my goal weight of 160 might be too low for me! I was totally thrown when my rheumatologist told me that and then a few weeks later a nutritionist said that too. I also wondering what qualifies as large framed. I'm only 5'5" so not very tall. I always used to used to say that I wasn't fat, I was just big boned, but I was just kidding! The next time I'm at my regular dr's office, I'm going to ask him about the large frame thing. I thought 160 would still be a little high for my height because according to the charts that I've seen, that's still on the overweight side for my height.

    This wrist stuff is nonsense. I have tiny wrists and huge hands and can easily overlap the fingers. But my shoulders are very very wide, my hips are wide. Same way my calf muscles are huge but my ankles are really thin.

    My wrists were large when I was heavier everyone said.....you just have a large frame but now...I have lost 120 pounds now everyone say I have a small frame
