TOM doesn't make me eat chocolate...

    My PERIOD does...

I mean. Call it what it is.

Agreed that your period is not an excuse to binge. However, I allow myself some foods depending on what I am craving but still try to stay within my calorie limit. (I don't eat burgers frequently but often crave them during my PERIOD and allow myself to eat it-try to get bison when I can find it since it's a little better for you. Also crave chocolate. Try to do regular portions or smaller portions instead of eating a whole pack of Oreos)

While I do see your point, there are kinder ways to put it...unless this is a personal rant, in which case, as with a woman during her period, there's no point in trying to rationalize or discuss the topic.

    have a good day.

NO. Your period didn't make you do a d*mn thing, except spend $4 on a box of tampons. Stop making women seem pathetic and incapable of rational thought.

my period doesn't even have THAT much control over me.

eta: what it often does, though, is create many streamlined systems intended to make life easier until i forget about them a couple weeks later.

awesome.i agree. isnt it funny how i almost never gain weight on my period?

    I actually lost 1lb
  • My period doesn't make me have cravings. Although I would kill for a milkshake right now. It just usually gives me horrible cramps and makes me incredibly nauseous. I have a low pain tolerance and although I hear chocolate is a natural remedy for that, I usually just steer clear of it.

I know this is an old thread, but I'll throw in my 2 cents. I always thought I had cravings until I had a hysterectomy, keeping my ovaries intact, with all the hormones. No more TOM and no more cravings, probably because I didn't know when it would be happening. No more excuses. I did however, still feel like killing people a couple of days per month. haha

I do not CHOOSE to be in so much pain that mere walking hurts.

I do not CHOOSE to be so nauseated that mere water makes me feel like throwing up.

I do not CHOOSE to be so uncomfortably warm that I find myself sweating even sleeping under the sheets.

I do not CHOOSE to be so shaky that holding a pencil can become problematic.

I also do not CHOOSE to be so poor that paying for a doctor's visit to discover if there is a way to solve this is nigh impossible.

Who in their right mind would choose these things? If I could just make all of this go away with willpower and exercise, do you not think I would? Do you think I would not choose to be active and voluntarily continue with my daily activities, no obstacles?

If choice were the simple problem, I would not CHOOSE any of this. To those who say it's a mere matter of choice, please choke on the entire bottle of Ibprofen I have to gag down every month in order to just sit up in bed.
Good luck with it. Peri-menopause is even worse.

Maybe its just me but TOM likes to pop up out of no where on me and cause hormonal havoc in my life, and yes before I realize I'm craving EVERYTHING due to TOM I'll find myself in the middle of a Kit-kat or whatever junk I can get my hands on. BUT once I know whats going on with my crazy body I am perfectly able to override primal urges. HOWEVER DON'T UNDERESTIMATE THE INFLUENCE OF HORMONAL CHANGES ON THE BRAIN! thank you...

    PS its currently my TOM......:-P

I'm just as guilty as giving in to cravings, but you should NOT blame your period for your nutritional indiscretions. YOU made the choice to eat whatever you ate, and you make yourself (and all women) sound weak when you blame your body for a choice your mind made. I'm so sick of seeing people make excuses every other day for why they chose to forgo exercise or eat six large pizzas.

Example: "TOM had me eating cinnamon buns, UGHHH guess I'll start over tomorrow."

NO. Your period didn't make you do a d*mn thing, except spend $4 on a box of tampons. Stop making women seem pathetic and incapable of rational thought.

Well said! About the only thing my TOM does that I can't control is cause me cramping, bloating, and irritability lol.

On a side note, where are you finding tampons for $4, they're like $7 here. lol

Buy at costco or other club stores. It's not like they go bad! LOL! Stock up! LOLOLOLOLOLLL.

TOM bloats me and causes me to gain weight but it has nothing to do with food choices. I don't get cravings during TOM. Who can crave anything when you're curled on the couch wishing for death?

Peri-menopause is before your periods stop, and it's hell as you'll find out someday. Menopause is when it's over.

Love it. I have to say, though, until I starting following topics on MFP, I had never heard periods referred to as TOM. If someone has a problem with the word period, grow up.

That being said, you’re totally right. Periods can cause bloating, fatigue, food cravings etc. But we make the choice to let those factors interfere with our fitness goals. The only ladies who can use a period as an excuse are the poor women whom genuinely experience debilitating periods.

That being said, our periods can’t force food into our mouths. It’s not an excuse for poor food choices. Your body doesn’t care if you ate food because your period made your body crave it. If you overindulge, your body will suffer from it, regardless of the reason you craved in. If you’re not stronger than those cravings, that’s on you!

I believe women should be allowed to stab a man (non-fatal stab) every TOM. If I have to bleed they should too it is only fair.

^^This. I dont like to talk about TOM or his Aunt or any other bloody cousin for that matter....but each woman is different. Some like me go through paralyzing pain unable to leave the bed for sometimes two-three days.

Because of TOM my husband won't buy me a gun and teach me how to shoot it :noway:

But i'm lucky as a woman, it is right on target last exactly 4 days and the pain is manageable. The hormone rushes are not however.

This thread is kind of sad. The self-righteous women posting about "willpower" and "self-control" have probably never experienced a really bad period in their lives.

Mine used to send me to the emergency room. Now I just deal with it, 15 years later. (Yes, my problems started when I was a teenager.) Getting through my period without vomiting to the point of unconsciousness is a success in my books. If I don't work out, and if I get a little careless on the eating, so what? None of that is permanent.

I get extra-hungry right before my period, and the once it's here, the pain and nausea prevent me from eating too much. What I do eat is usually carbs because carbs are easier on my stomach. So yes, I might spend three days (or more like eight, sometimes) living on toast, crackers, and dried cereal. It's ok.

If you are lucky enough to have low-maintanence periods, embrace it, but don't rub other people's noses in it. It's unkind and uncompassionate.

OP, I'm glad for you that you have NO idea what having no control over your body feels like. I'm glad that you don't know what that kind of pain, nausea, or uncontrollable hunger/emotional waves feels like. I have stage 3 endometriosis. I wouldn't wish that on anyone.
  • I've never heard it called TOM before. Interesting. :)

Although, I understand what you're saying, and I don't want us to be perceived as weak either (Though I'm not sure by whom), I'm not so sure that there isn't anything biological going on behind it. We are losing blood and iron as well as experiencing hormonal changes, which make us have cravings. Mind over matter, I suppose? Much easier said than done when all the little things that normally irritate me are amplified.

I believe periods should just be a rest period of quiet and doing whatever feels right for you. You can get back on track when feeling up to it. No judgement.

You don't need him to do those things. >D

I will say this though, if you have a gun and you can carry: everyone else is always right. You will be a pushover. I guess you will lock it up and stay away from it when during that time, or just control your impulses. I love this quote from a forum about gun ownership:

"As a gun owner, you have to be cool-headed, more-so than the police ever have to be. And you do not ever run around pretending to be the police while carrying a gun because then, **** like this can happen. You do not start ****, act aggressively, flip the bird, roll your eyes, talk ****, or even raise your voice. To anyone. Ever.

A combat instructor (who happened to be Buddhist and a Marine) once said to me: "From now on, when dealing with (ed.) crazy / possibly violent people, you will lose every argument. You are always wrong. You are sorry for impinging on their day. You will apologize and apologize again. You will back the **** down. You will put your tail between your legs. You will let them talk **** about your ladyfriend. You will let them call your mother a ***** and a *kitten* and your dad a *kitten*. You have no ego.

You do all this because if you are the one to start a fight, by default that fight now has a gun in it, and if you start losing, you're going to pull it and kill him. And even if you don't go to jail because you could convince the jury that it was self-defense, you're going to have to live with the fact that you could have saved someone's life and yet you let your ego kill someone.

You are not the police, so don't act like them. Though all of you [civilians] are better shots than the police, you do not have the training, the continuum of force policy, or a union plus free lawyers protecting you if you screw up.

But after backing down and trying to apologize, if at any time you then feel your life or that of a loved one is in danger, put three rounds into his [cardiothoracic] vault, call the police, give a statement, go home, and sleep like a baby. You did all you could for your attacker, and he was the one that made the final decision...

    ... to kill himself."

My dad says women on TOM should be used to fight wars. I'm not sure if he was joking or not.

Ah. You shall be spared, male mortal. Thank you for your tribute.
  • On a serious note, it's kind of pathetic that the OP feels the need to drag women down. As if they're not dragged down enough. Does it really concern you? Is it THAT much of a big deal? Enjoy your salad during your TOM, and other ladies will enjoy their chocolate. At the end of the day...it's none of your damn business.

Good ol' women versus women. :( Can't we be kind to our sisters?

^^^LOL to the last part  and totally agree

my TOM comes with severe PMS. So I don't blame TOM, I blame TOM and PMS lol
I don't choose to have severe symptoms where I feel excruciating pain and sometimes but not often it's enough to render me unable to walk because it's painful to move.... ye it sucks for me :grumble:
I work out lightly and sometimes I choose not to work out at all because my body is already being stressed by mother nature's visit lol, so i prefer not to stress it too much

Also, during our TOM our body burns more calories so this is why we become hungrier and eat more. There's nothing wrong with eating chocolate cake if you want to. Just remember not to eat too much of it and to make healthy choices. Weird cravings happen, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem since TOM comes once a month. Think of it as that tome of month you get to eat chocolate cake or whatever you wanna eat haha  ....then eat healthy and work out more after TOM has passed to make up for it

Keep in mind not everyone experiences the same symptoms during TOM or PMS, some have it worse than others. For those who have it worse... I know the feeling :frown:

now if only guys could experience it so they'd know how painful it is too lol
