Why do people say men and women can't be platonic friends?

It is possible to some degree. Made some female friends in past when 1 of us were in a relationship. Some how you chat and they get dirt on you. Then later when you are both available and think about a relationship (sexual), you realize what they know about you and debate screwing up that relationship and them unloading all that ammo.

This is a very common delusion. Women simply don't understand the male mind. We do nothing for women without at least a 0.5% hope that sex will come of it.

so you're saying that when i was in high school and i went over to my grandmother's home every week during the summer to mow her lawn for her, i was secretly hoping to have sex with her?

    :noway:

you are sick in your head.

Wait. People look at the names of the posters? Meh. I just read the posts unless I see something interesting, Also, I still don't know you. I know who you are, I just don't know you. See the difference? I'll follow whichever tack a discussion goes

I have a lot of guy friends. Actually, most of them are all married by now, but we've all been friends for 20 years. They have amazing wives who are completely understanding of our friendships. Never hooked up with any of them. Some of the guy friends I have met later in life didn't work out so much as friends, some have. Either way, I certainly think it is possible, but I also see how lines can get a little skewed. If there is any physical attraction, it is difficult, IMO.

Platonic: of, relating to, or being a relationship marked by the absence of romance or sex.

Everyone saying they are platonic friends with people they are sexually attracted to is kind of missing the point. Once one of you wants to bang the other, it's no longer platonic.

I think men and women can be just friends, I have plenty of male friends, I get along better with guys, and hubbys best friend is a chick, and has a couple other female friends.

If we were friends, I would know. But that can't be possible because apparently, I would just want to bang you and would shower you with false praise and gifts to get you to succumb and discover my many charms or some such nonsense.

Riiight... so the person who goes home & masturbates thinking about their "totally platonic friend" who they aren't actually having sex with is just a platonic friend?? Sure.

We are surrounded in a natural eco-system that breathes sex. As the creator said, go forth and multiply. This notion pexplexes the athiests. Men and women are meant to be together, but once together, true to each other. Sex is the bond, the love, the trust. Sure men and women can be friends, but we are driven to love, go on, and have kids. Nothing wrong with that at all. Gay folks the same, the need for trust and bonding. So who wants to fight me on this...putim up

I don't want kids - where does that put me on your "we are driven" theory?

So you don't want sex then ? Do you say you are above the animals and your biology does not drive you to have sex ?

I have had a hard time keeping male friends, because they always seem to want something more. I think ( may be wrong) that women can be friends with a man but not vice versa, at least that has been my experience.

Yeah. I'm betting this will be locked down by the time I get home. I can hear the "Ride of the Valkyries" building to a crescendo already. I LOVE THE SMELL OF NAPALM IN THE MORNING. IT SMELLS LIKE VICTORY!

So, you're violating your own logic.

    Direct quote from you:
Why would you want a male friend who's behavior is OBVIOUSLY modified, because he is hiding his true intentions? That mans intentions will never be pure.

Why would those girls want you as a friend? You'd obviously never be a good friend to them since you're too busy with your "true intentions" of sleeping with them..

Again astute. Perhaps you finally understand, that I do not exclude myself from my statements. Perhaps a small difference is that, I freely admit and acknowledge this. Also most of my female friends I met from either them hitting on me, or me hitting on them.

So there is no pretense or "fakeness" to speak of. We met on terms of attraction so there is no secret.

I was more referring to those people(like yourself) who DENY that men can't be friends with women without desiring them. The denial is what creates the facade. The facade is what destroys the reality.

    Yes?

Please quote where I ever said the bolded part, please. You won't be able to, because I never said that.

I said that men and women can be attracted but I didn't care as long as they didn't act on it. To me, that means the relationship is platonic.

Just quoting again to see if I get a response showing me where I supposedly said something...

Agreed! Platonic = absolutely NO desire to be more than friends by either party.

I personally think that men and women can be platonic friends, but only when the friendship is not a super close one. But a BFF-type of friendship? No. Whenever men and women are THAT close of friends, there's ALWAYS at least one side wanting more.

platonic does not mean the absence of occasional or unrequited attraction. it simply means that nothing has happened between friends.

You've missed the point...like the animals on this planet and even trees etc, sex is a natural thing and we being biological animals also have a built in sex drive. One of the reasons and one of the reasons for that sex drive is to reproduce. It's built into us just like any other mammel, bird etc.

Again....this is a rabbit trail. The OP wasn't about what people believe. It wasn't about superstition. It wasn't about whether or not they "think" about sex. It wasn't about whether or not they believe that thinking about sex is sinful.
You're the one who brought up superstition. It was you I quoted. And I believe the other poster has a point. He doesn't want his wife around a guy who wants to sleep with her even if they don't. It's the thoughts the man has that bother him. Valid point.

It's this mentality, insecurity and lack of self control that created burkas.
