So . . call me dumb if you like but most of this thread has gone over my head. Still pretty new to this site.
Can someone, anyone help me for real. Not to good on the computer and both my daughters are in bed hehe. I'm 45, 5' 7 and 170 lb. MFP set me 1200 cals. I*'m told high protein is better so have set protein and carb goals at 105g with fat at 40g. Am i way of track or getting this right. please help. From a confused Su x0 -
For me 1200 is very difficult. MFP set it for me. I thought I was failure for going over on most days. Kudos to everyone who is doing it! I am 5'' 6' and weigh 127. I am only looking to loose like 5lbs so my clothes fit better.....can't afford a wardrobe change. I know logging the food before I eat would help.0

Your macros sound pretty good, but at 5'7" you could probably eat more. This will give you an idea of what your calorie range should be:

Your BMR is how many calories you'd burn if you were in a coma. Your TDEE is the amount of calories you expend in a day, and what you would eat if you didn't want to lose or gain weight. Eat anywhere between your BMR and TDEE to lose weight healthily. TDEE-20% is recommended (though I'd suggest TDEE-25% if you don't log every bite and nibble).
I'll throw this out there though: my mom is 5'8", and at 45 she couldn't lose weight on more than 1200 calories. Thyroid + age. Play around with your calories until you find what works best for you.0 -

I'm not going to stay you should get more than 1200 calories, but I'm also not going to say that only eating 1200 calories is good for everyone. Everyone has different needs and needs to figure out what is best for your own body. I think so much of it depends on what you are eating. 1200 calories can actually be a lot of food, but only if it is the right food. If you are eating lean meats and veggies without sauces, butter, etc, it is amazing how much food 1200 calories can be. You can eat a lot of super healthy food, or very litte unhealthy food. Unfortunately most people tend to eat the unhealthy, so they feel like they are starving. It all depends on what you are choosing.0

Guys, the arguing isn't going to really help anyone. Personally, MFP set 1200 calories for me, and actually, I feel fine. I work out and I eat what I like. It's actually kind of hard to go over 1200 (plus my work out numbers) on a normal day. For those who are thinking that I'll be back to my other weight as soon as I stop, well, I don't plan on stopping. I'll probably up the calories some after a while, but I only eat when I'm hungry (which should be done for everyone), and when I say hungry, I mean actually hungry, not just, 'oh I'm bored, I want a snack.'
Another helpful thing: Eat dinner at around five. It's not good t eat late at night. I usually eat more for dinner so I won't be craving a midnight snack.
Anyways, everyone should know that some things work for different people and some don't.0 -
I couldn't tell if all of those who are against 1200 were against it if it was the total or if it was the net. I have been trying to net 1200 but eat back all exercise calories and have been exercising for a minimum of 30 minutes and usually more like 50 each day, with some days even more, so the total intake varies from 1400 or so to a max of perhaps 1850 . . . I am 5'5', female, and currently 193 lbs. Does that sound OK?0

I'm on around 1000-1200 calories until tomorrow(when i'll start working out and having to eat more). I havn't felt too bad myself but that's probably because of how inactive I am. My job has me planted on my rear almost all day. Everybody is different of course, but typically it seems the less active you are the less calories your body needs I guess? I'm no guru so take that statement with a grain of salt haha.0

Do you expect your car to run without gas? Do you use your cell phone without charging it? Stop thinking of your body as a number on a scale, and start thinking of it as a machine that needs energy to function. The bottom line is losing weight at 1200 calories is not healthy because a) you aren't feeding it properly b) it's not ideal to live on 1200 calories for the rest of your life. The damage it does to your metabolism, and yes the potential harm it can do if your body goes into starvation mode and starts to consume it's own muscle. (Also your period doesn't need to stop for your body to be doing this, I was anorexic and my period never stopped not even when I was 115lbs so that's a mute point.) Also talking about muscle and starvation, guess what's a muscle in your body? YOUR HEART
Not arguing, just have a legit question.. If 1200 is so bad for you, why does MFP tell me to eat 1200? Is it because I'm so short, and over weight, or is it so I can lose weight and then they will alter it after I record my weight loss? I'm confused, I want to get HEALTHY, not lose weight then gain it back.0 -
I have the 1200 calorie a day plan also. There's one thing it seems no one is taking into consideration - age. I'm 66 years old and I am losing an average of 1 lb a week. When I was 26 I went on a diet and lost 12 lbs in 3 weeks and didn't gain it back for 20 years. Well the metabolism and lifestyle have both changed since then. I really am pretty sedimentary but I am working out hard with Leslie Sansone 6 days a week from 30 - 60 minutes with stretchy bands as well as jumping on a mini trampoline. Still it is slow going. Oh I am not starving, in fact I eat way too many treats. I have lost 16 lbs so far and want to lose 22 more. Anyway, when you consider calories take into consideration the age you are. The older and less active you are the less the calories you can eat. If you did the questionaire when you joined they came up with the amount of calories for a reason and one was your age and another your activity level. To all of you who can eat 1700 or 1800 calories - You lucky dogs. I couldn't have cheesecake today but you could have.0

This, as well as everything SerenaFisher has said. Don't get me wrong, when i started i stuck strictly to 1200 cals and dropped from 150 to 130 over the course of last summer easily. And yeah, during that time i would have argued with anyone that i was doing things the right way, i was full of energy and life, and that i didn't understand why everyone gave people who had that as their goal such a hard time. i started to notice something about six months in to keeping to that goal, however. I started dropping and gaining weight like a yoyo any time i would increase my calories (and by increase i mean even as little as 1300-1400 calories). my body genuinely had no clue how to regulate itself anymore. i started noticing i was sick all the time, feeling feeble and weak and just generally turned into a terrible person to be around. Even worse, i maintained the same weight for quite some time but instead of looking healthy and vibrant at 125 (somewhat of a low weight for my height of 5'6 but still perfectly in the normal range according to bmi and such) i looked sickly, emaciated, and really downright disgusting. I had hardly any muscle to my body. sure, i looked skinny and great in clothes, but the second they were off i truly looked ill. fast forward to now, a year after restricting my calories that low, and i have developed a whole host of medical problems. i definitely would not stand and say that i am certain that all of these health issues are in some way related to this, but i will say that i never noticed them/they were not as prevalent of issues when i wasn't starving my body. i would be willing to say that if any of it is due to an underlying illness (still working with doctors to figure things out) the radical restricted diet i put myself on definitely made every other symptom worse.
my calories on here are still set relatively low (1500), but i typically hit anywhere from 1700-2000 any given day when i feel like it. Even with eating more, im still sitting happily at 125 and guess what? my mood is better, i dont look like ive not seen food in years, and i have the energy to get up and work out and rebuild the muscle that i destroyed before.
not trying to rant or tell anybody whats right or whats wrong. it's your body and you are more than free to choose how to treat it (although as a friend i would urge you to rethink). i just like to provide perspective as someone who thought one way and lived that way with no adverse effects only to receive a big slap in the face down the road later0 -
so shocking.. MFP set my goal at 1200 calories, i started getting pretty close to that..have never really gone over my calories and started not working out , then i started working out and not really eating back my calories, but noticed that as days go by i keep consuming less and less calories all this week i have eaten between 600 and 700 daily... am just not that hungry or feel the need to snack anymore and when i do is veggies or fruit, everything in my fridge (that i am going to eat) is fat free, light or lo cal... thought i was doing the right thing specially after losing 6 pounds in 2 weeks i felt great... i guess i got to start eating more and eating back my exercise calories0

None...I am 5'6'', about 140, and I would be STARVING! I only exercised by walking my dog 30 minutes a day...I would end up binging. I upped it to 1400 and I have been doing so much better.0

Did 1200 for a week and it was the worst week of my life. At 5"9 and 173lb, I was losing 2 pounds a day!!. No energy for exercise and felt terribly tired all day. MFP should really dump the 1200 as even toddlers are advised to eat around 1400 cal and they hover around 3 foot. It's madness.0
