Why the fitness culture on Social Media needs to die

Graduating from Monmouth University in New Jersey, she now seems to put that Communication degree to good use.
That is one of the most poorly-crafted sentences I've ever read.
The clunky transition of that sentence reminds me of this:You make a great team. It’s been that way since the day you met. But your erectile dysfunction? Well, that could be a question of blood flow.0 -
One of the commentors below said it better than I ever could:
"Bryan Garcia · Follow · Albuquerque, New Mexico
I don’t think that I have ever gone out of my way to respond to one of these ridiculous articles, but this, my friend, was one of the most irritating pieces of literary *kitten* I have ever forced myself to digest, only to be able to respond in such a way that your ignorant malfunction of a human brain might bury itself in the narrow pit from which it came.
People like you disgust me, hating what you don’t understand. And what you don’t understand is this: The community that you just went out of your way to torment is one of the most passionate and devoted alliances of our seemingly run-down youth. The “fitfam” is fueled by intensity and desire – characteristics that are seldom found in a generation consumed by self-glorification and worthless idolization. You lack the necessary amount of self-consciousness to see the obvious motive force behind your own words – insecurity. Instead of criticizing those putting forth an effort to make a positive difference in the lives around them, how about you give them credit for not sitting on their *kitten* all day, taking countless numbers of selfies and trying to figure out why the world doesn’t literally revolve around them. What this inspiring group of individuals promotes is a lifestyle achieved only by hard work and dedication. It takes more time and effort than you could possibly fathom to create the types of physiques that you just bashed. That time and effort has the power to create an indescribable bond between complete strangers who share this passion. And that is precisely why we call ourselves a fit FAMILY. We fight and we grow every single day. We share a deep understanding that this is more than just a hobby.. It’s a lifestyle. And it’s a damn honor to be a part of something so significant and meaningful in a world full of numb-skulled imbeciles like yourself."

You know, these things can be expanded to a lot, a LOT of other subjects. Kids, pets, hobbies, politics, racism, patriotism.
I do not have kids and do not have pets, I will in the future but that doesn't mean I enjoy it, AT ALL, to see friends/family/acquaintances post pictures of their kids or pets or complain/praise/whine/***** about their kids or pets.
Same with politics and who votes for who and who is pro what and who isn't.
But those with kids will be less likely to find it annoying, those with pets will more likely find the picture of X/Y/Z's dog doing a trick more amusing. Those with certain political opinions will be happy to see someone express the same opinion.
This person who wrote this blog is being very bitter. You can't take her serious when she refers to a group of people who find "this" attractive then goes and labels it "gross", whilst "speaking for" a group herself.
Yeah, before I made the change it WAS annoying to see my friend who works out 7x a week post a picture of his protein shake and chicken salad while I was downing my 3rd Red Bull and frozen-pizza dinner. It DID make me feel like I was doing something that I shouldn't be doing. But that was in no way or shape his fault. I felt that way because of envy and self guilt. If you personally feel fine to be, as the blogger wrote, "enjoying your bloody mary, eggs benedict and coffee with cream at brunch" then all of the pictures of healthy food in the world won't phase you one bit.
The fact that they do means you are either (subconsciously) aware that maybe you shouldn't be eating that.
I read this, and the only thing that was humorous to me was the amount of overweight/non-fit/out of shape friends and family I have on FB that shared it. But oh hell no if I were to make a blog post like this about all the baby pictures or religion pictures or political text posts that all of them share/circlejerk around. Then they're all offended and it's none of my business and I should accept them for who they are.
Anyway, I'm off to go lift some weights and do cardio. Not before I post on FB that I'm going to do so, of course. Can't miss the chance to ruin someone's day by somehow making them feel bad about themselves due to no fault of my own :P

Most of these reasons seem selfish and nitpicky. Awwww, boohoo, you don't want to see certain things on your instagram feed. Poor you The author just keeps saying me me me, I I I, this is what I want to see, how dare you people use certain tags in your pictures!0
-
I couldn't get past the fact that the author complains about other people making her feel bad about her body (the biggest heifer in Farmville,) then proceeds to call another woman's body gross. That's some hateful shizz.0

That article is a waste of time.0

Clearly the writer of the article is just following the wrong people. Plus I like getting the constant updates and reminders to prep your food or go workout. Every time I watch TV I see so many commercials for fast food and restaurants and magic pills that'll make you thin. I'd way rather see some hashtags telling me to go to the gym!
Amen!
I follow a handful of "fitness pages" just so that I'm constantly reminded of my goals, and to inspire me to kick some butt in the gym. Sometimes when I'm having a lazy day, I will see something that gets my excited to go work out.
Ehhhh so I guess no complaints about the "culture" of everyone posting pics of themselves out getting trashed or eating 5 plates of "food" at the buffett?!0 -
Yes. People trying to be healthy maybe to an obsessive level are ruining the world... I need more celebrity arrest stories and people who are posting the next super cheese loaded baked meal that only has 1500 calories a serving and families who give their kids nothing but fried foods instead of teaching them about healthy living.

Hey, how big is Kim Kardashian's *kitten* these days?0 -
What an absolutely ridiculous blog post, it hurt my brain just reading it.
For those that want more of the gun wielding badass, here you go. Too muscly for my cup of tea, but each to their own.
And to be clear this isn't just one of those "normal people thinking their famous".... This is Dana Freakin Bailey... Mr. Olympia 2013 PHYSIQUE CHAMPION!
This isn't just some chick doing workouts everyone can do. She's a professional in the fitness industry.
for seriously?0 -
Meh. Don't like what I post, either don't read it or unfriend me. It's my page and I'll post what I see fit.
And the woman that the author thinks is "gross" in that article....10/10 WB.
I thought the same thing.
yah!! wow!. .more please!
I wonder if she has an account on here? . .FR me please!!!
Pretty sure it's Dana Linn Bailey, IFBB Pro.
Correct. Google Michelle Lewin black tape project. May not be work-safe.0 -

1. They make completely average people think they are famous
Like Honey Boo Boo? The Kardashians? Jersey Shore? Real Housewives of _________?0 -
Social media sites like Facebook need to die off, nothing good has come of it. Forums work just fine and don't steal your info to sell to companies.
A lot of good has come from social media sites like Facebook. It's all in how you use them.0 -
I must say, I'm really confused by this new trend of accepting unhealthy things (aka: obesity), while shaming all of those who are trying to lose weight or don't need to lose weight. I suppose some people need SOMETHING to make fun of, but why hate on any woman's body? If its not what you like, then move on.
And it seems to be only something that women do. I've never seen a man go "OMG-his body is gross." However... I'm sure they're out there.
Somedays, I hate people.

This. I use Facebook as a way to keep in touch with lots of family and friends who are spread out everywhere. The event mechanism is pretty handy too, and has made things like class reunions much easier too. If one person can't find someone, odds are someone else knows someone else who does, etc.0 -
I read this and I think it is so absolutely true.

huge thread backfire eh OP?0 -

OKay. I see where the OP has a point- its annoying, but I think, IMHO, that the word I would use is not annoying. I would have used OVERWHELMING.
For example: Those #fitfams on IG and FB are #OVERWHELMING in the way that they post, because Im #fat and not in shape.
I dont know WTF #fitfam even means, but i know i need to get un-fat so I can live a #better life...
All the pictures of meals and protein shakers and neon sports bras and tomato faces... #overwhelming, because i just need some help figuring out where to start. Which is why I came to MFP

I do not get why someone would follow a hashtag if they had not interest in the subject matter -
I do not care what the body type - muscular, skinny, obese, - calling someone gross is just low and uncalled for0 -
I could write a similar article about "This is why letting people with Blogs think they're suddenly journalists needs to stop"
What a b***0 -

Thank you sir!

I think the article was intended to be a humor article, but it failed miserably. There are aspects that are annoying such as:
1) Look how jacked/ripped/shredded I am. (Those people who only take shirtless pictures and those are their only pictures)
2) Do you even lift?
3) Constant photoshoot pictures on personal profile and not "fan page"
4) Some gym memes
5) Everyone has their own clothing line
Numbers 1 and 2 on my list above are the more negative aspects. Most people in this subculture are very helpful and aim to motivate others, not degrade them. The author of the article should have focused on the types of people who post some of these negative aspects then the positives.
Also, I don't get the neon thing. I guess it's a trend in women's activewear. Men's clothes are usually black, grey, white, or navy with the occasional primary color.0 -

yeah, I lost all respect for the writer when she described another person as "gross" - it's totally wrong to put a picture of anyone's body on the internet and caption it "gross"............. but it reeks of jealous in this case because the woman in that pic is hot and I'm jealous of her muscles, .............but I'm mature enough to just say that I'm jealous of her muscles and can avoid feeling the need to insult her.
also, the bit at the end of the article about breeding a race of really strong people........ IMO that's a good thing, not a scary thing. And humans in the past were much stronger than modern sedentary people... raising kids to be physically active and strong is only putting humans back to where we should be.0
