Will power is easier for males. I took an eating disorder class from penn state and learned that males have a different approach to dieting than females. To men food is just food whereas to females there is a more emotional relationship. We r more likely to eat due to feelings. For the most part. Some men feel this way too and some women don't but in general this is the way it seems to be. It's ions of the many reasons women have a harder time losing weight than men,

I disagree that willpower is easier for males. The emotional relationship with food correlates to self-image, not food itself. Women are more likely to define their worth based on physical appearance than a man, therefore will turn to food in situations of stress, anger, sadness, depression, whatever. The behavior of "eating emotions" is often a subconscious (although sometimes conscious) attempt to make the outside look just as bad as the woman feels on the inside. You already feel like crap, might as well look like it; or conversely, if a woman has a poor self-image, she might turn to less nutritious foods so that she will physically feel/look as bad as she does emotionally.

I agree that women have a harder time losing weight and there is a correlation between emotions and behavioral approaches to eating, but not that we have an emotional relationship to food. Behavior can be modified, which brings us back to willpower - is it really easier for guys because they have less societal pressure to look a certain way? Or is it that men tend to approach weight loss from a nutritional standpoint, are more likely to engage in strenuous workouts, are less likely to focus on food (because women still do the majority of the cooking in the home on average), and don't beat themselves up for a slip? Is it that women tend to choose extreme approaches to food intake, are less likely to do strenuous workouts (on average, obviously MFP is biased sample), do the majority of food purchasing and preparation (therefore thinking about and seeing varieties of food quite a bit more than men), and succumb to beating oneself up for slips because of this idea that dieting has to be agony? I don't know the answer. I'll give you the behavioral approaches to dieting differ between the sexes, but willpower is individually driven and so are relationships to food, so I do not believe gender/sex plays a role in that respect.

This is exactly what I meant when I wrote what I did. But because I'm not good with words I basically got attacked for posting it. Lol I have such a hard time expressing my thoughts written or verbally. That's probably why I am a cake decorator lol

I can't with this thread, so I'll just make a pb2 recommendation. I can go through a jar of peanut butter in 24 hours. I can happily eat it instead of meals.

Pb2 wasn't quite right UNTIL I used sugar free vanilla syrup instead of water. That made it creamier and sweeter. Start with half as much as you would water or it might be too sweet. Delectable.

I'm done with this discussion. The amount of close minded people on this site who are always looking for an argument (instead of focusing on helping posters) is unreal. It's a shame people can't just be supportive of the poster without trying to start arguments with people who don't believe what they do. I'm all about good spirited debates but when people just replay with sarcastic remarks instead of how they really feel or think that's when I want nothing to do with it. I once saw a poster tell the original poster she didn't deserve to lose weight because she gave herself a cheat meal. Totally sad. Why can't we just keep it friendly. We're. All here with the same goal (maybe some to gain and build) but we all are watching our nutrition. Can't we discuss without putting others down and be motivating to others?

I came into this forum to discuss something I heard in a class. It was based off of a study. Can the results be skewed. Absolutely. That's a risk in any study. I myself find some truth in it. But I can also see how others can't. And I'm ok with people comment that they don't. By all means let's discuss it. But I don't like people being sarcastic and making me out to being a moron for sharing something I heard with the forum. It makes me not even want to try to help anyone. I don't even want to ask for help myself because people are so mean on here. I'm am being honest and putting all this out there. I'm hoping not to get a mean spirit comment back

Sorry, I only support truth, and I did offer several suggestions before you came in here with your gender bias.

What year was your textbook written?

Get a food scale. Don't avoid the wonderful nutrients in foods you love sheerly out of fear. Weigh things out, and put them in baggies, or buy them in single servings.

    Right.

    Blanket statements for the win.....

And men cheat because "we're programmed that way" too huh...

I have to agree with this.. It's not fair to say "we're women so weight loss is harder for us because wah wah wah." I don't agree at all and I think you should tell your instructor that they're ridiculous and sexist. Women are meant to have more body fat because our bodies are made for child bearing. And that's as far as our excuse goes. Men can build bigger muscle mass because of their testosterone. For both it's a matter of willpower and hard work to lose weight. There's nothing wrong with eating natural peanut butter by the way. It's good fat, and it's good for you. Your brain needs fat.

Just ignore the negativity. I think everyone should stop making fun of what Nicole said about the relationship between gender and food. If you think that has zero validity, I couldn't disagree more. Men and Women have a very different relationship with food, there is a reason why eating disorders are more prominent in women than men, how many anorexic men do you know? Only 15% of people diagnosed with eating disorders are Male, so there is definitely something more than willpower here. When, we look at society at large, men have a multitude of “acceptable” body types in our culture. This ideal ranges from hyper-thin male models, to Brad Pitt, to hyper-muscular Hulk Hogans. In general, women must adhere only to the thin female ideal, the hour glass shape or else, well they are made to feel ugly and unattractive, so of course this births a whole lot of emotional issues that affect women and their relationship with food. You do not have to agree with what the PP said but there is no need to belittle her or make fun of this theory, we are here to discuss and learn from each other and I appreciate each and everyone's willingness to help/share as long as we can all be nice about it !

Now going back to my PB addiction, I had 1 spoon of PB today and I am feeling the withdrawals, I am craving it like crazy. I am getting ready to go workout and I will reward myself with 2 extra spoons and stick to that amount, nothing more. I did not eat a lot today, I had oatmeal for breakfast +PB, tomato bisque soup for lunch, hummus snack this afternoon. So 2 more PB spoons shouldn't hurt? Thoughts?

Mixing half n half Walden Farms (icky) Peanut Spread with my Adam's 100% Natural peanuts & salt only crunchy Peanut Butter simply to lower the calories/carbs/fat and to get rid of that WF jar lurking in the back of my fridge. Still tastes a bit too sweet for me, but then I never liked peanut butter with added dextrose and starches in it (Skippy or Kraft, lol). It works though.

Thoughts?

Did you know that studies in the UK and in North America have shown that less than 20% of men that struggle with an eating disorder even seek help? Did you also know that it's much much MUCH more difficult for men to get into treatment programs? Doctors don't look at men the same, THAT's the real problem. I do in fact know men with anorexia, and the ones who've succeeded in finding treatment had to go through multiple doctors and hospitals to get there. Far less men are treated because A) they are less likely to seek the help because eating disorders are viewed in our society as a womanly problem and is therefore demasculating, and B) it's harder for them to be given the help for the same twisted reason.

Do expand your research, just because you read a figure on a women's based website or in a magazine doesn't mean it's true, or that it tells the whole story.

I can't believe how sexist and ill informed so many people are.

So I guess the only people that should comment on threads are the ones that agree and support the ideas of the OP? I don't agree. Kind of eliminates the notion of debate.

And I think you are confusing withdrawals with just wanting more of something. There is a difference.

Not true. If you read what I wrote, i clearly said you are free to disagree, you just don't have to be rude about it. We can all agree to disagree without name callings or ridiculing someone

    Exactly!

I just finished a couple spoonfuls of PB2 and I don't find it delicious or amazing at all...When I first heard about it and tried it I thought it was Godsend, but the longer I've been on this site, the more I've been really reveling in whole foods and really tasting the true tastes of my foods and PB2 is just not delicious. It has a slightly reminiscent taste of the plastic jar it comes in and is really salty....like salty plastic. This is messed up but it kind of reminds me of the taste of a certain bodily fluid. There's no bold richness to it, it's hardly peanuty, and there's nothing satiating about it whatsoever. probably because something's missing from it...oh yeah, the fat. It's like eating the label on the peanut butter jar with salt...shoulda just had the peanut butter. I will say that the chocolate version is good in some almond milk, but that's about all I will say. My solution is to measure out 2 tablespoons of REAL peanut butter, put them on whatever you want, log them, and be done with it until the next day, and look forward to the next day when you get to do it again because that's the spice of life.

I'm sorry but having been addicted to substances in the past, I have to say that you're wrong. Withdrawal is something serious. You just want to eat peanut butter. I think you might have an eating disorder, compulsive eating or something. It isn't the peanut butters fault. But if it's so serious you are perceiving not eating peanut butter constantly to be something that causes you withdrawal symptoms, you need to speak to a doctor and a psychologist. No sarcasm or rudeness intended. COE can be a serious mental health disorder.

Thoughts?

So I guess the only people that should comment on threads are the ones that agree and support the ideas of the OP? I don't agree. Kind of eliminates the notion of debate.

And I think you are confusing withdrawals with just wanting more of something. There is a difference.

Not true. If you read what I wrote, i clearly said you are free to disagree, you just don't have to be rude about it. We can all agree to disagree without name callings or ridiculing someone

I think adults should be able to have debates and discussions without getting butthurt.

Just because less than 20% of men who struggle with eating disorders seek help doesn't mean that more men than women have eating disorders, and do you really think that the majority of women who suffer from ED seek help, seriously? but Okay, you win...there are more men than women who suffer from eating disorders, now let's go back to Peanut Butter, shall we?

I agree that I could have a compulsive eating disorder but I don't think it is making me sick, right now it is more of an emotional attachment, brain craving ecT, that is why i used the word "withdrawal" which can also men emotional detachment. I think my brain is focusing on PB and by me trying to resist it, it is making me crave it more, I don't think I have the clinical symptoms of withdrawal though, far from that~
