Karen great job on your list. I don't want to think about vacation being half over. It is too soon make it stop going so fast.
Fera- Glad the interview went well and the process is moving forward. Being outside you had an opportunity to see what the country life would be like without all the noise from the cities.
Queen- Glad you check in with us. Thanks for the mileage update.
Becka- Congrats on your loss this week and I 2nd Karen's statements about weight loss and exercise.:drinker:
Today, my plans for meeting a friend for lunch changed so my day was filled in a different way but I believe it was for the best. This morning I meet a friend to walk and jog around a track in our area. She is just starting to run so it was a lot of walking for me but that was a good thing. We completed 3.72 miles. Then in the afternoon I meet up with another friend for a bike ride of 14.36 miles, in 1 hour 10 minutes, which was faster than our time on Monday. Then tonight I finishes off with a 1.45 mile swim, where the coach had us doing interval training by swimming distances from 25 yd to 200 yd and then repeating it. It was a tough workout but it felt so good. I can say that I have completed a reverse triathlon over the course of my day. It was better than spending it with a friend in terms of exercise. A total of 19.53 miles today. :glasses:
Need to go sign off for the night so I can get some sleep. I have another busy day tomorrow. Hope everyone has a terrific Thursday.0 -
Mileage for 7/16: 4.5 miles (2 water aerobics and 2.5 walking)
We waited until the sun was setting to walk this evening. It was still hot, but bearable.
Fera, glad your husband's interview went well.
Today I canned 7 quarts of cherries. Cathy has 2 cherry trees in her yard. They are so good! I have made myself sick eating them this week and last week.
Tomorrow we have an appointment in Boise with the cardiologist for DH to have a stress test. They want to be sure there is nothing serious causing the a-fib. I won't get to go to water aerobics in the morning.

@Becka~I agree with what Karen said as well. Losing weight is 80% diet and only 20% exercise. I didn’t exercise at all until I lost about 60#, then I started walking—after a few months I graduated to an elliptical (ultimately buying one for my house) and then eventually joined a gym and got a personal trainer. Like Karen and Laurie, I love to exercise now—but didn’t always.
@Laurie~Impressive activity/mileage yesterday!
@Tom~Wish I had thought ahead yesterday and made my pasta and spinach dish that I’m saving for Friday night.
AFM~Not much to report, I’m having a good week and the scale is moving downward so hope to report a loss officially on Saturday. I did make it to the gym yesterday and watched part of Skyfall in the cardio theatre while on the elliptical—it was a little awkward since I can’t hold onto the handles with my left hand yet, but had a good workout.
Exercise Goals:
Monday~Gym NOT DONE!
Tuesday~Trainer DONE!
Wedneday~Gym DONE!
Thursday~Trainer
Friday~Sauna
Saturday~Rest Day
Sunday~Trainer

@Karen It has been nice and cool here also. I had to wear a zip up hoodie at work yesterday. Hopefully it is nice and sunny, it's been rainy these past couple of days. Way to go on knocking out some of your chores. I need to make a list and tackle that this weekend too. As far as the car, I would like a Jeep Compass. Kia Sorento is nice too. I am looking for an SUV type because whatever I get I plan to have for a while and I don't really want a typical mom van when we start having children. My boss just got an Acadia and it fits all 4 of her girls comfortably. We shall see. I am not ready to buy brand new.
@Tom I do love raw spinach. I planted some in the garden this year but I think the animals ate it or they got too much shade.
@Beckah yay for the weight loss!
@Kah I believe I missed something. Did you injure your hand?
Now to me. I haven't heard back on the promotion yet. Apparently my competition couldn't make her interview. I should know today or tomorrow. The interview was hands down the hardest I've ever had. I should have expected that since the big boss has degrees in HR. Yesterday, I went on a run. I am on day 3 now of C210K. This week, you run 10 mins, walk 1 and repeat 4 times. My legs were getting very tired yesterday. Someone was walking on the incorrect side of the road on my way back to the house, and it made me really nervous. I have never been uneasy about my running outside before, I live in a nice area. But in the news I saw someone in Muskegon (2ish hours from here) was shot in the head multiple times while out for her morning run. Since then, I go at different times of the day since I don't have much of a choice on route.
Monday- C210K w9d1 DONE
Tuesday- Strength and Belly Dance (did belly dance, skipped strength to get ready for interview)
Wednesday- C210K w9d2 DONE
Thursday- Strength and Softball (hubs wants to lift with me AFTER softball tonight)

@erienne~I injured my thumb in May and had surgery in early June to repair a ruptured ulnar collateral ligament and MCP joint, I’ve been either in a splint or cast since May 22nd. Apparently, its a long recovery, at least it’s on my non-dominant hand though. I’m hopeful when I follow up with the surgeon next week I can at least come out of the splint part-time and can start OT or PT. My fingers are crossed that the promotion comes through for you!0

@Tom...Love your daily "days." I was raised on the farm and enjoyed homegrown beef and I still get to enjoy it as I have a friend that raises beef as well as the guy that bought the family farm. My husband is allergic to turkey and chicken, so we see quite a bit of beef in our house. Spinich? Love it fresh, but can't do it when it's cooked! :noway:
@Tanya...too lazy to cook?? I hear ya girl. With boxes filling up the apartment and so much to do by moving day, I have found myself relying on pre-made/fast food too often lately. Unfortunately, probably no end in sight until after the 25th as the kids' schedules are heating up too.
@Karen...we have had pretty nice weather here in the Midwest lately haven't we? Glad you are taking advantage of it. We pop back up to the high 80's today so Emma and I are headed to a pool. I promised her one night of fun while Jacob is gone since she's had to watch me running errands and packing. I just recently heard of Soma and understand that they have some great bras...none near me though :frown:
@beckah...whoop, whoop on 3.2 pounds!!
@Fera...that's so exciting -- totally worth the nervous coyote time huh? Don't worry too much about them -- I lived on a farm for 15 years and never once did they come into the yard.
@Laurie...once again, your workouts impress me. What a lucky friend to have someone who will slow down and help her with the process.
@Kaye...so jealous of cherry trees in a backyard! One of my mom's funny stories is when they drove out to Seattle for the World's fair...they bought some cherries and she overdid it and had to cut in line at the restroom when they got to the fair.. we all know not to over-do it on Cherries!!! We are lucky enough to have a wonderful fruit/veggie stand within 10 minutes of us. Got cherries, grapes, peaches, plums, apricots and corn on my last trip. A bit spendy, but so worth it! I don't like cold fruit as I grew up in a house where between my dad and the 5 kids, fruit barely made it through the day, let alone need to be put away in the fridge. :blushing: I get my Bountiful Basket tomorrow night and then will probably head to the stand again to suppliment the fruit.
@Ebailey...yes, mixing up your time is probably a good thing. We live within driving distance of the oil in ND. While the money is great for the economy, it does bring in some yuck too. We've had a increase in issues -- so much so that we made the decision to lock doors at church that lead to the children's area. Never thought I'd see the day!!
AFM: Like I said, I know my diet hasn't been the best (not the worst either) but I have been doing good on my walking and working out. My guess is that any losses I'm experienceing are due to increased activity levels that would allow me to eat at a higher calorie amount. Right now I'm just trying to keep treading water and stay calm. Normally, I am a very "it'll all work out" and laid back kind of gal. I sleep like a rock and just enjoy the day. However, my stress levels have been really high lately -- not sleeping well, stress headaches, stomach ache etc. I'm really hoping that it's all home related and that once I sign on the dotted line to make this house ours, it'll all go away. If it doesn't, I'll have to re-evalulate.
Have a wonderful Thursday everyone!!0 -
Good morning all.
RobinsEgg- I have been smoking almost every weekend. The smoker is working well but I have learned so much about smoking food and now I’m thinking of getting a better smoker. I have done corn, mac & cheese, beans, chicken, pork & beef ribs, Boston butt, tri-tip, brisket, sausage fatties, hamburgers (juicy Lucy’s) and spiral cut hot dogs.
Happy Yellow Pigs Day
Yellow Pigs Day events have been held by mathematicians since at least the 1960s. Most celebrations occur on July 17, although others are held on May 17 (May being the "17th month" of the previous year) and September 17 (a convenient time for college students).
The most elaborate festivities are held at HCSSiM, where the holiday has been celebrated annually for roughly 34 years. In preparation for the event, students decorate shirts (often mathematically themed) with yellow pigs on them. On Yellow Pigs Day students, staff, and visiting alumni wear these shirts. Ultimate has long been the official sport of the day, and a competitive student/alumni game is held. In recent years, origami yellow pigs have been folded.
David Kelly gives a lecture on the historical and mathematical properties of the number 17, and his impressive collection of well over 289 (17 squared) yellow pigs is on display. The celebration concludes with the singing of Yellow Pigs Day carols and the eating of a yellow pig cake. Gifts containing or consisting of yellow pigs and mathematical knick knacks featuring the manifold properties of 17 are frequently exchanged among friends.
Many attendees of HCSSiM have gone on to become practicing mathematicians, and have encouraged the celebration of the day at their institutions. Yellow Pigs Day celebrations are known to have taken place at several other locations, including:
• Princeton University, where students have celebrated Yellow Pig's Day for many decades,
• University of Chicago, during the 1970s
• Boston, in 2002 and 2003
• Canada/USA Mathcamp, where staff has included former HCSSiM attendees
• Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics, celebrates Yellow Pig Day during their Summer@ICERM undergraduate program.

Fera- I long for the quiet you experienced the other night! I'm at work at one of our clinics that is adjacent to the hospital...the hospital where they are building a huge new bed tower and today they are working on a major landscaping project right next to us...they have to use this huge crane-operated auger to break up the ground. We can feel the ground vibrating in here!
Tom- Love spinach and beef! Not sure about yellow pigs though...ha! I had no idea the number 17 was so important.
Beckah- Yay for the loss and Yay for the piano! I have my mom's old piano which is in pretty rough shape and we're keeping it in storage. I'm hoping some day to either have a larger house or make room for it. It is a terrible thing that I've got it stashed away like this.
ebailey- The runner Kool-Aid is strong....and delicious. Good job on your training!
Laurie- I have a hard time slowing down for other people. I'm not fast by any means, but I guess I'm just not very patient. I bet your friend was glad to have someone walk/run alongside her!
AFM- Working working working....someone quit again at one of our clinics, and so we're all picking up extra hours to fill in. Not exactly how I thought I'd spend my summer.
Back to it!0 -

Hi folks. I hope everyone is having a great day.
Tracy, congrats on getting the house. Moving is such a hassle but you are almost done.
Kaye, you are doing great with your exercising. It sounds lke you are feeling better thank goodness.
Laurie your activity this summer is truly an ispiration for all of us this summer. I am feeling very jealous at the moment. Who ever thought I would be jealous of exercise, lol.
Karen congrats on the new car. I am beyond jealous as you got my current dream car. I came so close to buying it a couple of years ago but decided until the kids actually got moved out I needed to be a bit more practical.
Kah I hope you have kicked the headaches bothering you. Ty for all the cheerful advice about being good with my foot.
Tom I love cow appreciation day. I am a Midwest farm girl and would happily eat beef every day if I could convince myself that was the best idea
Robin it is good to see you are getting around and keeping busy. I am happy you seem to be doing better. You are way to good a person for everything you have had to deal with.
Tanya I can believe you are tired. You are always so active and dedicated to getting your miles in.
Ferafilia congrats to you and hubby. Sounds like everything went great. I hope you will both enjoy the new position and environment.
Ebailey I hope you get your promotion. Then car shopping which should be a lot of fun.
As I am sure I missed some people I know you are all doing great and I hope everything in your lives goes just the way you would like.
AFM: I went and got an MRI on my ankle this morning since it isn’t making a lot of progress towards getting better. The dr said there was severe bruising on several of the bones and ligaments and a slight tear along with severe bruising on one of the tendons. He is going to send the results to my dr and I will probably be put in a boot for at least a couple months so it can fully heal. Especailly since there is calcification build up showing where I didn’t let the sprain a couple of months ago heal properly. What can I say sitting still is really not my thing anymore but I guess I am going to have to suck it up and deal.
So I thought I would share a very yummy easy salad my son concocted the other night for us. He chopped up some asparagus and celery and then tossed it with some bacon pieces, shredded cheese, and creamy Italian dressing. It was amazing. Well I got to get busy doing nothing. Have a great day everyone.:flowerforyou: :drinker: :drinker:0 -
Thursday Truth: I am exhausted. I've obviously taken on more than I can chew, so I will have to lower my mileage goal. I will drop it down to 150 miles. When I calculated last week, I would need to average 6.5 miles per day to meet it. My feet hurt, and I'm spending about 2 hours a day to get that mileage in, and that's really pushing. And... that's after a day of work!
This Saturday I'm doing a 5k obstacle scramble. It's a fundraiser for the Canadian Cancer Society, and my sister asked me to join her team. So today at physio, it was a light stretching day so I don't have any DOMS for the event. There will be 10-12 obstacles, the toughest being a 300lb tire flip. We can opt out of the tougher obstacles and move ahead by doing burpees. :noway: I'm mildly anxious as I've never done any event, not even a plain 5k. My PT reminded me to use the running portions as the "rest" between challenges. Apparently they are quite tough.
I will update my mileage tomorrow.0 -

Are any of you gardeners?
I'm super excited about the possibility of moving to Indiana, into farm country, into a HOUSE... after years of city and apartment living. I want to try my hand at gardening and preserving my produce (canning, making sauces, jams, etc).
I'm looking for different books, blogs, videos, etc with helpful tips and hints for vegetable gardens, fruit bushes, fruit trees, raised beds for herbs and strawberries, etc.
Look at all this space! (All the way back to the tree line in the distance is owned by the church)

fera- the house and land is beautiful. I am not a gardener but I am sure you will learn some helpful tips from this group.
tanya- I changed your goal. Good luck with the 5K obstacle run. It sounds fun. When lifting the tire do a great squat and use your legs to lift it. It will help when flipping it.
jt-good luck with your ankle. Even you get confined to a boot you can still work on your upper body using bands and hand weights.
When it comes to me and running, it is my least favorite activity so I don't mind slowing down to run with someone else. I enjoy the conversations and helping other people on this journey. While I am doing this I am learning to control my pace and build my endurance. In many ways, running is still a relatively new activity for me about 1 year so I am still learning. By teaching someone else, then I am reinforcing what I have learned. The other benefit for me is that I have someone to exercise with and to provide that reason to get moving in the morning or at other times of the day. The person I am running with started with same weight I did about 268 pounds, she is now down to 224 so we have lot in common in addition to both being teachers of middle schoolers.
It was productive day today since I managed a successful workout that was high intensity today. Today, I jogged at a slog with increasing pace then did several sprints, walked the treadmill at 4.1 mph down to 3.4 mph for interval training and ended with leg lifts, shoulder hangs, shoulder exercises, with sit ups on the incline plane and ended on the AMT machine.
Tomorrow I am getting a long overdue massage then going for a bike ride and rock climbing tomorrow night.0 -
I didn't hear anything on the promotion today. I hope to hear something tomorrow. The whole building is wondering if I'm getting it or not. Thank you to everyone for your support. My car has been acting up today which makes me hopeful for a different ride.
As for running, I have diagnosed myself with Runner's Knee. It's in my left knee. It isn't as painful as it is annoying, so I will be running tomorrow as usual unless something changes.
We won our softball game! 14-8

@kah Sorry about your thumb it sounds painful.
Wednesday Wish: I wish the housecleaning fairy would visit. Thankfully we don't have our weekend packed with things to do, so maybe I will be able to catch up on it then.
Thursday Truth: I am nervous about this promotion. I do not think the interview went well and the fact that I don't have an answer right now scares me. I also SUCK at softball. But it's fun to play.0 -

Hi guys! :flowerforyou:
@blturner--nice to see you pop in! :drinker:
@erienne--Yes, the runners have strong kool-aid, but don't let that lure you into damaging your knee. I'm not saying to stop running on it, but be careful--you don't want to wreck a knee and end up on the sidelines for a long recovery. I like both of those SUVs you mentioned. I considered one of the smaller SUVs like the Hyundai Tuscon or Nissan Rogue, but we already have a Jeep Liberty and i thought 2 SUVs unnecessary. Also, gunner is already having trouble jumping up int othe Jeep and that will only get worse as he gets older. Honestly, it didn't take a lot for me to talk myself out of the SUV and into the sports car.
@laurie--sounds like a great workout today. I really need to step up my strength training and core work.:ohwell: I also think it's great that you are running with your friend. I have a hard time matching my running pace to anyone else's--whether they are slower or faster than I normally run. However, I don't mind walking with friends. Thanks for the mileage update--looks like I have a long way to go. :blushing: If I could make summer stop flying by I would. At least we have NYC to look forward to in the Fall.
@fera--how exciting for you and your husband about the job and the house!
@tanya--have fun at your obstacle race. I did one last summer called the Rugged Maniac, and it was super tough, but lots of fun. I did every challenge, but was only able to walk the course in between. It was on ski slopes, so way too tough for this flatlander to run! As far as the burpees--I think I would rather tackle any challenge over doing burpees!
@tammy--I absolutely love the car!! It has been my dream car for a couple of years as well. I have been practical with my car choices my entire life, so I decided to get what I wanted (within reason) this time. Thanks for the salad recipe--I don't like celery, but you gave me an idea for how to use the asparagus I just bought at the farmer's market today. I hope your ankle heals quickly.
@hansea--I also have a hard time matching my pace to someone else--it's frustrating to me whether it's faster or slower. That's why when my friends and I run races together, it's always "see you at the finish line."
@tom--I read you whole post about Yellow Pigs Day and it is way over my head. Back to analyzing literature...
@tracy--good luck with all of the packing! Soma has a website, but you would need to know your bra size or be comfortable doing your own measurements. I bought my swimsuits through the website and they came very quickly. I didn't make it to the store today, but maybe tomorrow.
@kelley--that's great that the scale is moving down for you! A cardio theater? Your gym sounds fancier than mine.
@kaye--my grandparents had a cherry tree in their back yard when I was a kid. My sister and cousins and I used to climb it and pick them, and then make ourselves sick eating them. It eventually was struck by lightning and fell on their garage one night--thank goodness not on the house where they were sleeping.
Thursday Truth:
I did nothing on my list today. :blushing: Instead, I went to the gym then met a friend at the farmer's market. After we shopped, we had sangria and pizza for dinner.
Tomorrow, I plan to at least take care of the house plants.
Goals:
1. do something about house plants--some are dead, some need to be re-potted
2. wash/dry clean all drapes in house
3. shred old files
4. do something about dead laptop
5. clean out spare bedroom
Exercise Goals:
Mon--walk gunner DONE
Tues--walk gunner DONE + gym RAN OUTSIDE INSTEAD
Wed--walk gunner DONE
Thurs--walk gunner DONE + gym DONE
Fri--walk gunner
Sat--walk gunner + gym
Sun--walk gunner

@Tanya~I’m with Karen, I would much rather try any obstacle than do burpee’s—they are pure evil! Good luck on the course.
@Fera~We have several gardening enthusiasts in the group, I’m sure you’ll find plenty of advice. I live in a huge city so can appreciate the serenity of that picture!
@Karen~It’s a pretty cool gym, relatively new to the area—back in April they had a huge promotion, membership was only $10/mo (I think its $40-$50 for people joining now). Its HUGE and except for a pool, they offer all the same amenities my old gym had plus they have a women’s only area and two cardio theatre’s—which have surround sound and are dark like a movie theatre with stairmills, treadmills, ellipticals and bikes. The women’s theatre usually plays “chick-flick” type movies and the main one usually plays more action type movies. It’s a little bit further from my house, but for $10 month I don’t mind.
@ebailey~I hope you hear about the promotion soon and that its good news. Take good care of that knee, don’t overdo—you don’t want to aggravate it more.
@Tammy~I’m so sorry about your ankle, I hope with a boot life can return to semi-normal and you get around a little easier. I hope it heals quickly!
AFM~Had a session with my trainer yesterday, again lots of leg work—we’re managing to get some upper body stuff in, just modified (his physical therapy background comes in handy sometimes). I think we'll both be happier when I can lift weights again. Not sure if I’ll make it by his studio to use the sauna this afternoon or not, may meet a co-worker for HH instead.
Exercise Goals:
Monday~Gym NOT DONE!
Tuesday~Trainer DONE!
Wedneday~Gym DONE!
Thursday~Trainer DONE!

Good morning everyone.
Happy Nelson Mandela International Day
Every year on 18 July — the day Nelson Mandela was born — the UN joins a call by the Nelson Mandela Foundation to devote 67 minutes of time to helping others, as a way to mark Nelson Mandela International Day.
For 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity — as a human rights lawyer, a prisoner of conscience, an international peacemaker and the first democratically elected president of a free South Africa.
“Don’t dwell on what went wrong. Instead, focus on what to do next. Spend your energies on moving forward toward finding the answer.” ~Denis Waitley

Morgori - love the quote will be stealing it!
LivesTT - have fun at the wedding! (picturing the cake!)

Kah - fascinated by your new gym's offering 2 theatres how COOL! :smokin: so glad your trainer has his PT background to work through your issues and your strenght is improving

@robin--great joke and good job staying on track food-wise! :drinker:
@L2T--enjoy the visit with your daughter.
@kelley--that's awesome that you got in on the ground floor at the gym. When I switched gyms last summer, I also gave up the pool, but I never used it--ever. Plus, the trade was a good call b/c I'm so erratic with my workout schedule--I do much better with a 24/7 gym. No more excuses of "by the time I get there, it will only be a half hour until they close" b/c my gym never closes.
@robin--I also do some of my lists on paper, but posting them here makes me feel accountable to someone other than just me.
@kaye--glad you got a good report about the hubby's ticker. :flowerforyou:
Friday Fitness:
Well I've done much better with the cardio this week, but I really need to add in some more strength work starting next week.
I also made a bot of progress on my list. Re-potted the two houseplants that were still alive, and got rid of the three pots of dirt "decorating" my bay window. :blushing: I also did some more weeding on the patch of vines in the front lawn. I'm making progress, but there's still alot there. Tonight I also did some school work (planning for Fall) at starbucks, so all in all a relatively productive day.
Tomorrow I have the gym scheduled, but I may skip it to go visit with my niece. Not sure how the schedule will shake out, but if I skip tomorrow, I will go to the gym on Sunday instead.
Goals:
1. do something about house plants--some are dead, some need to be re-potted DONE
2. wash/dry clean all drapes in house
3. shred old files
4. do something about dead laptop
5. clean out spare bedroom
Exercise Goals:
Mon--walk gunner DONE
Tues--walk gunner DONE + gym RAN OUTSIDE INSTEAD
Wed--walk gunner DONE
Thurs--walk gunner DONE + gym DONE
Fri--walk gunner DONE
Sat--walk gunner + gym
Sun--walk gunner

Mileage for 7/18: 4.5 miles (2 water aerobics, 2.5 walking).
Just a little catching up. I've been going to the chiropractor for a couple of weeks. My back is getting much better and the strength is returning to my hand. Today I canned 11 pints of apricots and made 4 dozen scones for the wedding. I'm really glad that I traded Amy jobs. Making the scones is much easier than sewing those blouses.
I'm a list maker, too. I love to see things checked off. It makes me feel like I am accomplishing something. I will even add things to the list, if I do something that wasn't on the original list, just so I can check it off.
Have a great weekend. Onward and downward. Kaye0 -
