Jealous of the Super Obese?

Also! The surgery is to remove a large portion, of the lower half of your stomach pouch.
You can naturally shrink your stomach! Surgery Free!0 -
I think it's pretty unfair for those who work really hard on their bodies and these obese people on the shows gets free services by top gastric bypass and plastic surgeons. And by putting in little to no effort on their part, they lose weight.
If you are that lazy and became that way, get your 650+ lbs fat *kitten* up and start walking up stairs and eat grapes...not sodas and a whole pizza for a snack!!
I'm sorry, i know there are certain circumstances where people gain weight (genetics, thyroid problems, loss of a family member). But overall, you control YOURSELF. Don't blame your problems on others.
Please don't hate, it's just my personal opinion and I am not attacking anyone0 -
I was watching one of those medical weightloss shows the other day. You know the type, where they're really really big and they get gastric bypass and lose a ton of weight with what the episode shows as little to no effort and then they get skin removal surgery and look amazing... and there was this girl who'd been 310lbs, got bypass and lost a ton of weight, got down to like 120/140. She had skin removal surgery and the dr was even able to get most of her stretch marks. She can now wear bikinis for the first time in her life, and as long as she gets one that hides the tummy scar you'd have no idea she was ever fat.
I found myself thinking, if I just gained some weight (ok, 50-100lbs) I could just get surgery and lose it all the easy way. I was actually jealous.
Have you ever had that thought?
Obviously I won't do that but it sounds pretty amazing to me.
No, because what they have to endure physically and mentally both before and after that surgery I would never want. It takes a toll on their heath, their self esteem, and their wallet (I think, not sure if insurance covers that sort of thing). There's a lot more beneath the surface than the magic tv editing will show you.0 -
Ohh Beaker!
you're just soo weird

No offense to those who get the surgery but I have WAY more respect for those who do it the "hard" way.
Meh no offense taken. I didn't get my surgery in order to gain "respect". I did it because it was the right decision for me.0 -
A friend who had the surgery told me she hasn't eaten a peanut butter cup in 5 years. If I could go 5 years without eating a candy bar, I wouldn't be overweight to begin with. So you can diet and exercise or you can have surgery, diet, & exercise.0

That's ridiculous! Can you lift 650+ lbs? I'm going to go out on a limb and say no. What makes you think someone who hasn't been working out could?0 -
I started out 316lbs (May 2014) and have lost 29lbs so far with no assistance from a doctor or anything. At the end of the day I'm the one who's allowed myself to get overweight therefore I should be the one to lose it with no gastric band.0

I feel like people have a distorted view of what weight loss surgery really entails. People getting weight loss surgery covered is not something that's "unfair" or to be jealous of, any more than people getting any sort of medical procedure covered by government/insurance is unfair (of course, there's plenty to gripe about there, especially when it comes to government's role in health care, but those gripes are not WLS-specific). WLS isn't something to be jealous of - it's a last resort that permanently alters your body to force you to eat less food. It's neither easy nor desirable; you're permanently altering your body because you couldn't control your eating. Saying it's unfair and sounding jealous of someone had most of their stomach removed or otherwise restricted is just laughable to me. That's like being jealous of a smoker whose insurance covered a lung transplant, because he got to smoke and you had to undergo the oh-so-hard stress of not smoking. Poor baby.0 -
I'm not jealous, just stating my opinion on what I think of it0

Before starting my current journey, I checked my insurance plan on the coverage for gastric bypass/lap band, just out of curiousity. At 235, I wasn't even close to being large enough. The cost was enough to put me off the idea. First the cost of gaining weight - extra food and fat clothes. Then cost of the surgery, even with the insurance covering most of it, there would still be the deductible and other expenses. I would rather eat less, exercise a bunch, and spend my cash on new thin clothes and marathons.0

I can relate to this feeling. I lost 35lbs and have about 40 to go. I've been doing it the hard way for about 5 months and am proud of where I am. I hope to lose the last 40 in the next 6months.
My best friend is about 140lbs overweight. she is getting the sleeve later this month and said the doctor told her she should be able to lose it in about 7 months. That means she will be done the same time as I plan to be. I am jealous. But deep down I know that I am doing the right thing.0 -

The whole it's not fair they get it for free spiel and they put "little to no effort on their part" to lose weight suggests otherwise. And "stating an opinion" doesn't change that; we're all just stating opinions.0 -
Absolutely not.
I don't think I would consider having multiple surgeries the easy way either.
If you have done so much damage to yourself that you have to risk going under the knife... that sounds like a pretty tough decision.
Also, 310lbs is low enough to do it the RIGHT way, if there are no other health problems.
And like others mentioned, weight loss is not only about the physical part, but also very mental in a sense that you have change your eating habits and how you view food and exercise.
Getting weight loss surgery is basically curing the symptoms but not the cause.0 -
Surgery is definitely not the "easy way out."
People who undergo it still have to watch what and how much they eat....even more than a regular dieter. Dumping syndrome is a common issue for those who aren't careful with what they eat. Basically, if they eat even the tiniest amount of fat, they'll either throw up or have diarrhea. So, there are no cheat meals unless you're near a toilet. Over-eating could potentially put you in the hospital if you blow out your new smaller stomach. Now you're stuck paying the surgery cost, plus your follow-up doctor visits, you have to go into therapy to address the root of your previously unhealthy eating habits, and you have to take loads of supplements cuz there's no way you can fit enough food in your belly to keep yourself properly nourished without pain/sickness and fear of stretching out your stomach.
Not only is there a tremendous financial hit, but also think of how devastating it can be to a person's psyche. They're so happy, they're finally loosing real weight, but now they've got all this sagging skin from such rapid loss. I've heard many times that people who undergo surgery end up hospitalized later in life because of nutrient deficiency and a whole other list of illnesses that occured simply because they had such a large portion of their digestive tract removed.
Think about it...your immune system is mainly housed in your small intestine. If you take out most of it, your immune system takes a major hit.
I've had to consider the surgery for myself..... No, the physical, psychological, and financial pain is not worth it if your body is capable of losing weight without surgery.0 -

I know people who have had that surgery. Its not the "easy way" by far. Its still the same work to get the weight off and maintain the loss and then there are all the new complications you have for the rest of your life. I don't envy them at all. I understand the desperacy to get the surgery but glad I never had to.0 -
I can't read the entire thread. I'll share with you my families experience with bariatric surgery. I don't want to see any more horror stories.
My grandma had the surgery before I was born. She physically can eat very little at a time. She doesn't drink with meals because there is no room left for food. A VLCD sounds excruciating for me short term. Imagine decades of that.
Her anatomy is so severely changed that it's effected her medical care. She had internal bleeding last year and the doctors could not find it. Her anatomy is so drastically altered that they couldn't navigate an endoscope far enough to find where the bleeding was coming from. She was given 21 units of blood to keep her alive. She is a very small woman, so she probably only had about 11 units of blood in her body to begin with.
I would guess that the OP just meant, "I wish there was an easy way to reach your goals with very little effort." That isn't reality. You've seen the commercials on TV for medications: "XYZ is used in the treatment of dandruff. Side effects may include fever, rash, anal leakage, anxiety, death, and herpes" I'd rather be fat (possibly with dandruff) than live a miserable life full of medical problems and daily pain while eating.0 -
but look at all that excess skin and then the skin surgery!.. thats what turns me off the surgery route. But I totally understand the feeling. Like some days i wish i could just win the lottery instead of having to get up and go to work. its ok to have dreams lol0

I'm not big on posting replies, but I felt like I had to reply to this one.
First off I am a Gastric Bypass patient. I had the surgery seven years ago. My doctor said I was knocking on Heaven's door and being 23 I had way too much ahead of me. My starting weight was 402 and I am currently 191 and have kept the weight off. I battle with 10 or so pounds especially after my pregnancy, but use MFP as a way to stay in check. The surgery is in NO way easy! My recovery was 12 weeks long with two hospitalizations and I still battle with it regularly. Granted, I would do it again in a heart beat.
The surgery is a tool, period. Yes, you can only eat so much at one time, but it's up to you as to what that "so much" is. We (my husband and I) have chosen to wait on the skin removal surgery until we are done having children. As far as that being free I honestly don't have a clue.
The fact that you are jealous of these patients absolutely floors me, I didn't think someone could think like that. That'd be like me being jealousy because a female has a muscular physique...I too could get there one day, but first have to discipline myself to do weight training and not just walking and aerobics...it's all has to start with me!0 -

I left the thread many replies ago and just decided to check back in now to see many messages. I wasn't going to reply until I saw yours. I know its hard to read all the posts in a thread this long but I have stated a few times that it was just a passing thought. The tv made it LOOK easy (obviously its not) but in a moment of weakness I just wanted an easy out.
I am happy for you and everyone who has had the surgery and had success and I'm happy for everyone who's had success without the surgery.
I don't appreciate the name calling or the negative comments towards myself or the people who have had the surgery (from others in the thread, not you). That was not the point.
I am personally committed to doing this by eating right and exercising but in the odd dark moment I think "I just wish I was done already". Seeing this one particular episode where the girl made it seem so easy who was so happy and was now wearing bikinis made me jealous. I will never be able to wear a bikini (I would not have the self confidence to do it with what I'm sure my tummy will look like assuming I ever do get all the weight off) and I'm going to have to literally work my bum off.
I in no way was trying to suggest that people who get the surgery are lazy or are taking short cuts or doing it the easy way. All I was saying is the show made it look easy and I wanted easy.
I've bought into the silly fad drugs (thank you dr. oz) and diet pills, and about a million fad diets and none of them worked. I know the surgery would also not be right for me (personally, not to say it isn't right for anyone else). All that has worked for me is eating right and working out.
I honestly appreciate the stories people have shared on here and it does make me rethink a few things (because I'd never researched the surgery because it is not something I would pursue so I did not know just how bad it could be) and I am glad some people on here understood that all I was saying is for a silly moment in my own desperation I wanted an easier solution. TV made that look easier and thinking "if I just indulged a little more in all that stuff that I love but can't have anymore and I could get the "easy" solution" sounded (only for one dark moment) like a good idea.0 -
You have to remember, anytime they have commercials for those weight loss products, there is always a disclaimer at the bottom: "Works best with exercise and a healthy diet"...well DUH! If you do just exercise and a healthy diet, you WILL lose weight. Stop giving money to the weight loss industry. They are making a killing off people.
There's always another little disclaimer people miss..."results not typical".0 -

Obviously I won't do that but it sounds pretty amazing to me.
No, can't say I have.
Those shows are carefully edited to make it look like an easy, quick fix.
Surgery and recovery is not an easy way.
What the shows skim over is that some people have horrible complications following surgery. Even those that do not have complications spend months recovering. Many have the way that they can ingest food changed forever. Some very unlucky people end up vomiting every single day.0 -
I don't think it is worth it. I had a friend who had a lap band placed. She lost a lot of weight but had severe complications that almost cost her with her life. Plus not to mention the pain and risk for infection!
This. A friend had the lapband done and had to have it removed due to a severe infection. He was really really sick for close to a year because of the surgery.0 -
I guess I still thing healthy eating and exercise is the best....but I can acknowledge it doesn't seem to work for everyone.0

Anyone else read the title of this thread as 'Jesus of the Obese'?
No?...
ok0 -
I had a bilio pancriatic diversion with a duodenal switch (a form of weight loss surgery) five years ago and have to this day kept the weight off.
I had a lot of complications needing home health care and self administering IV antibiotics, through a pic line, daily for six weeks. I had to be fed with a liquid through the line as well.
Would I do it again? Yes, I would.
I can now put my own shoe and socks on and didn't actually get to the point of needing someone to wipe me.
I've extra skin and it's staying right where it is. I've no desire to have it removed. When I think about it I tell myself it's my fault it's there and there's really nothing I can do about it.
Even though I've lost the weight I have to always remember I wasn't born a thin person. I am naturally fat and can't eat everything I want when I want it or I'll be back to where I was before.
I was given an opportunity a lot of people don't get and I'm not going to let it be for naught.0 -
This again?0

This again?
I know right?..have read the title over and over and still keep reading 'Jesus'
