It's not the diet soda. Weight loss is not linear. You have not gained any appreciable muscle, if any, by playing ice hockey. You may well be retaining water in the muscle though if this is a new type of activity for you - which will be masking any loss.

^And that's my sixth flag for discussing and/or pointing out how to use the flag feature on these boards. Granted, this one was a little more passive aggressive than others, but it still doesn't fall under the guidelines of what the mods have asked us to flag.

I kind of get someone being butthurt by an answer and flagging for abuse, even though it is absolutely not and it's silly. It's the spam I just don't get. I think someone is just going round flagging randomly. Maybe flagging for abuse was not getting them what they wanted.0 -

There is almost no sodium in a can of diet soda. It will average around 24 mg in a 12 oz can of a typical diet cola. Some fruity sodas might be up to 70. Compared to other foods, that is negligible. An egg has 70 mg, 1/2 c of plain Greek yogurt has 55 mg, 3 oz of bell pepper has 35 mg, etc.

That's nothing. You can find 70+ mg of sodium in a cup of fresh unsalted swiss chard. As for chips, that's per serving - a serving being either 15 or 28 grams. So that bag of chips has at least 176 mg of sodium (and even that looks like a low sodium version).0 -

70 mg of sodium is for a 20 oz bottle, not a 12 oz can, which is 40.
As for an 8 oz bag of chips only having 22 my of sodium? No way. I'd love to see that packaging to see how they managed that. That would mean that entire bag was made with less than 2 potatoes, and they added no salt at all (which is a whole different kind of horrid.)0 -
But even if 1200 would be too little.....wouldnt I still lose weight? I'm at a deficit. I weigh 130 pounds and my goal is to get to 125. Its been really really hard to get to. I am 5"5. And YES. i weigh my food on a scale.
THIS, the bolded and italicized parts, is the reason you're struggling to lose the weight, not the diet soda. You're currently at a very healthy weight for your height and your body is very happy at that weight. You have very little that you want to lose. Because of all that, your body is fighting against every pound and you're going to lose weight VERY slowly.
Have patience, keep up your hard work, and if you aren't already, start lifting weights! Changing up your exercise routine will help!0 -

There is no sugar in diet soda. And I have not had my chances of binges increased by drinking it. In fact, I find it does the exact opposite of increasing my appetite, and have to avoid it for that reason. Of course everyone is different. Important to remember though that

Good morning! Research suggests that the artificial sweeteners in diet soda or in ANYTHING fools your body into thinking you are going to be getting real sugar when that artificial sweetener is consumed. When this happens, your body produces an insulin response. The release of insulin causes existing blood sugars circulating in your body to be stored in fat cells in preparation for what it thinks is more real sugar energy coming in. If you consume artificial sweeteners, your body will eventually lose its natural ability to to respond to real sugar, which is the ability to eat less at the next meal and use or burn the sugar energy circulating in your blood from the previous meal. Therefore, you may have trouble loosing or gain weight as a result because your body will want to store more of your blood sugars in fat cells. What’s a girl to do? You want your sweets and artificial sweeteners seem like a great solution, right? My answer is this: eliminate ALL artificial sweeteners from your diet as best you can and DO NOT choose them. Wean yourself of refined sugar cravings by eating foods that contain naturally occurring sugars, i.e. whole fruits. And most importantly, drink a minimum of eight 8 ounce glasses of water every day. Many people confuse thirst with hunger. And lastly, those multiple chemicals can harm you. They are not natural and the diet industry in my humble layman's opinion just wants your money. Out of curiousity, I googled the topic of artificial sweetners and news and found links that the earlier commenter may have been referring to. I think it's too early to make a statement on the subject; as IMO more studies would be necessary. They refer to one study of more than 200+ people and another one (which seems to be the main one being referred to in the news articles) involved only 7 people. This is just FYI for anyone wanting to read the info. As usual, the scientific studies (first 2 links) just provide an abstract, unless you have a paid membership. I find the subject interesting as my dad is diabetic and uses artificial sweetners.

i drink diet cola and have been losing weight consistently over last 4 months.. dont think its the diet drinks that are an issue0

The bottom line on these studies is summed up by an extract from one of the papers:In other words, although these sweetners do not contribute directly to weight gain, they may have indirect effects on weight and fat accumulation by affecting the mechanism regulated by intestinal bacteria.
So a lot of maybes, ifs and buts.

There are a lot more plausible culprits than sweeteners out there. Of course, that didn't stop the usual anti-sugar loony brigade jumping all over these preliminary findings.

I gave up diet soda around the time I joined myfitnesspal 2.5 years ago and then lost 39 pounds, went from 140 pounds to 101. I'm now 107'ish. 101 was too low. I'm not really sure if it's the diet soda that made a difference or not. I failed to lose weight before that though. There could easily be something else causing it and sometimes I'm concerned there might even be something wrong with me causing it, but that was on one minor change I made that I hadn't made before. Kept it around this weight range for 1.5 years now and I stopped logging long ago. So, I'm basically at the weight I was when I was 18 through early 20's again and I'm 40.
My view is that diet soda is not exactly healthy regardless, so why not give it up and drink more water instead?0 -
