It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be, but I will third or fourth the recommendation for wipes, butt cream, and vaseline (I used that on the wipes). I also didn't feel extra hungry afterwards, and was oddly not hungry at all the day of all liquids.

Don't be embarrassed by post-procedure farts, everyone does it.

Congratulations for getting one done! It's not normally something people are in a rush to get.

My brother had cancerous polyps removed at age 50, so I became eligible early (age 44) to get one. I don't understand why anyone would want to wait....why risk being able to cure it by waiting?

My pre-cancerous polyp was found at 28 when my GI went to confirm my diverticulitis. I'm now on a 5 year for life plan. It sucks, but the surgery I just had was enough. I can't imagine adding cancer treatments on top of this. Nope. I'll take a few days of mild misery every 5 years. My parents are well past the age for having a scope done and have not due to expense . Drives me up a wall, because it's a serious matter.

Doesn't Medicare cover it? It should!

It was still nearly $100 for the prep solution. I'd see about asking for a different prep if I were them.

So you're weighting before and after right?

Cos you wouldn't be human if you weren't just a leetle bit interested

This, very much so. It would be interesting to note how much the "evacuation" phase actually...evacuated.

You're generally told to start drinking the stuff around 5 p.m.; I recommend starting no later than 2 p.m. if you don't want to be up all night in the bathroom. Wet wipes or wet toilet paper for wiping

You know I will! I only wish the weight loss were real! It would probably put me under goal.

Once I need to do a colonoscopy prep (Yay, not for another 30 years!), this is going to be my go-to route. Just make sure to avoid the red ones. :p

If you're going to do it, do it right with juicing. All fruits and veggies. Flush your body and at the same time provide it the various nutrients your body needs. FRUITS AND VEGGIES, JUICE THEM.

70 words. You seriously couldn't be bothered reading 70 words before spouting completely irrelevant and useless advice?

Do you know how many fruits and vegetables you can juice in the time it takes to read that many words? Do you even juice, bro?

Pat, don't wipe. Moist flushable wipes are your friend.

I just had to do a day of clear liquid diet followed by a bowel prep as I had a part of my colon removed Friday.

Preponix? Something like that. Supposed to be an easier flusher from what I've read. So sorry about losing part of your colon. Hope you are recovering well.

Prepopik? That's the one with the least amount of medication and it has good flavors, like cranberry :)

I work for Colon and Rectal specialists. This is all I know! I've also personally had a colonoscopy and endoscopy at age 19. I unfortunately did the horrible snot tasting Moviprep. We loathe giving it to patients, but sometimes their insurance gives them no choice.

DO NOT WIPE WITH REGULAR TISSUE. Butt paste and moist toilets are SPOT ON suggestions. Remember nothing red or pink or fibrous! You might be tender the next few days and your bowels might be really irregular for a bit. All normal. God forbid the prep makes you develop hemorrhoids like it did to me :( NO STRAINING!

I got this done just two days before Christmas! The prep was the worst part, and I heartily agree with the advice you've been given.

I went on the wisdom teeth removal cleanse last year, which is pretty similar. Lost 3 kilos in a week or two.

As an oldster who has to have these procedures every 5 years :\ , let me give you 3 tips that will make the elimination process easier. At least the day before your prep, eat very little. Instead, drink clear liquids then as well. Gorging or overeating beforehand will make the cleaning out phase WORSE. Trust me. That means 2 days of clear liquids like broth, non-red Jello and popsickles, etc, not one day. Also, even if your prep drink smells and tastes good, hold your breath or nose when you drink it, then rinse your mouth out afterward. I personally prefer to rinse with 7-UP. Don't cheat and decide that you've had enough and those last few ounces aren't needed. Oh yes they are! Nothing's worse than thinking you're all cleaned out only to hear "Guess who needs an enema?" It happened. :s

Everything will be fine. And yes, kudos to you for taking this very important step to good health.
  • Mine steered me away from certain colors of jello. I couldn't have red or green (I think). It is difficult to find the orange and there wasn't any yellow. It wasn't horrible just make sure to follow the directions.

Mine was no red or purple I think.

You'll be ok, it isn't as bad as the dreading. When I had mine, I woke up in recovery "remembering everything" which turned out to be a big, hilarious dream sequence that never happened. In the dream I was pointing at a monitor while they did the procedure asking what this was and that was and was really entertained.

Thanks for the reassurance on not being so hungry. It's silly that I'm worried about it, but I've been working hard for a long time to lose the weight. I'm 3 pounds away from my goal. Figure I might see the goal artificially with the "cleanse".

No you won't unfortunately but you will feel lighter, lol. I need to get mine scheduled. It will be #3 for me.

Thank you for this thread. I've been putting this off, but I need to get off my duff. Of all the horrors discussed here, my biggest dread is listening to someone else fart. Note to self: pack earplugs, or if allowed, phone/headphones.

I described MoviPrep to my procedure nurses as "viscous salty lemon pledge". I couldn't get the second bottle down I wanted to puke so hard.

Clear liquids prior colonscopy. Probably didn't read up to that point. All you saw was "cleanse". Probably didn't see the satire about it too.

Ehh, I've read up on this, and elimination is often "not complete" if you don't get as close to the procedure time as possible. The doctors are telling you the timing for a reason. If you don't want to be up all night, ask your doctor about the possibility of a cleanse + same day procedure. That apparently is becoming more popular, but it depends on the availability of doctors. I would advise following the prep. guidelines EXACTLY unless you want to be "rescheduled" due to "lack of prep." :confounded:

Here's a relatively lightweight news article on the improvements in "prep": An easier way to go. And, for those with a strong stomach and an interest in, uh, bowel science (BS?), here's a riveting read: Seeking the ultimate bowel preparation for colonoscopy: Is the end in sight?

When I was 9 months pregnant with my first I woke up one morning with horrible pain in my side. I was taken to the ER and they couldn't figure out what was wrong with me. They thought it must be something colon related, so they helped "wash my insides" and sent me for a colonoscopy. Turned out I had kidney stones. I imagine the experience would be slightly more...comfortable (?) if I hadn't been pregnant and they hadn't missed the signs of kidney stones.
