saw something on here about gravy and i have an alternative suggestion that not only worked out beautifully but tasted excellent... a friend of mine taught me to make vegetable gravy.. all you need is roasted til soft veggies (i used carrots. parsnips and cauliflower) put in food processor or blender and pulse if too thick add chicken or beef broth. didn't believe it would actually work but it was AWESOME tasty and much better than flour laden gravy.
the longer i watch everything i eat the more i'm willing to try out new things with veggies.. i've even made mashed cauliflower (instead of potatoes) and sweet potatoes are wonderful. i know for me it's about feeling i've indulged without really doing so

Selena: So glad Rutledge was reunited with his people. I can't even imagine the poor little guy missing for that long. Nice that you could be his angel.
Went to the gym today and had a good workout. My trainer is increasing the intensity a little bit every time I go and it felt really good today to realize some gains. I walked past a scale and didn't have the nerve to step on. I was afraid if I hadn't lost any weight I would be discouraged. So, that will be for another day when I'm feeling a little braver. For today I feel good about my progress.
My trainer is such a positive person. . . it does me good to get some positive reinforcement in my mind. He must only be about 25 years old. . . fresh out of college. . . first job. I would feel like an old fat thing working with him if he wasn't such a sweetie. Makes my day. He's young, but he seems really smart in dealing with my physical ailments and still make progress. So, it was a good day!

Hello everyone,
My DH woke up to 33 below zero and frozen pipes. Only 1 school delayed 2 hours this morning. He was able to unthaw them before he left for work. I had a nice visit with my DD and DSIL then I visited my DM and DS today got my hair done and just got back home.
Selena - great news about the dog!
Heather - 1 lb that's fantastic! You really did great while on vacation.
Socialwacker - I want to get a pair of snow shoes too although we only had 3 inches of snow this year which is 80 inches under normal!
Terri Milwaukee - you must be getting excited about your trip! We're thinking of heading that way the first week of April.
Beth - I agree, it does sound like you are being bullied! Do you have a human resource person that you can talk to? That would be the steps that you really should take.
Carol in NC - ((((hugs)))) just keep getting back on track! You can do it. I can't believe what is going on at your church that is not okay. You stick to your guns or report them!
Leslie - I am glad you are feeling better. It's very hard to go on but it sounds like you are doing well. We are here for you.

Did an hour of Jillian Michael's 30 Day Shred DVD. I probably should only have done Levels 2 and 3, but for some reason I did a bit of Level 1. Going to take a step class tomorrow.
Well, we're here in FL. Vince was thinking that we might not because he was concerned about the bitter cold (for NC). He was concerned if the pool froze then we're looking at spending thousands of dollars to fix it. Also, down here there aren't shut off valves for the outside water like we had up north, so he was concerned about the pipes freezing. I know how much he loves the Daytona, and I told him "what's going to happen is going to happen. Nothing different will happen by us staying home"

Selena - what an adorable doggie! I would take him to a vet or an animal shelter where they'll scan him for a chip. Our vet has a scan in his lobby, but I know that there are at least 2 different types of chips and most shelters will scan for different types. Our vet only has the scan for the one kind
When we got to the condo, I went to use the toilet in one of the bathrooms, it was FILTHY. I was going to clean it, then I noticed that the countertop was in bad shape so I called Vince. Seems the people above us again had a leak and it came into our condo. the ceiling has a big bubble.
Joyce - we'll probably be in FL only for a week. I wish it was longer.
Heather - congrats on the loss, especially since it happened during your vacation. Good going! Congrats to your son. You SHOULD be proud
Sylvia - you probably know that if you put hydrogen peroxide on a fresh bloodstain, it will take it out

Selena, I think Mildred beagle is truly a guardian angel for all our furry friends. Such a wonderful ending to your shout out for the dog you found. He just needed to be found by the right person.
Congrats on losing that 1 pound Heather. You need to email your guide and tell him that he was able to help you do it! He would get a kick out of it. When we had out house built back in the 70's there was a small pantry in the kitchen. I know it isn't the most hygienic thing to do but we have our big trash can in the small end and use the end as a pantry. Everything in there are factory closed containers so there isn't any contamination from the trash can. But there is no light in there and you have to reach way in to get things. So I decided I wanted sliding shelves put in. They were wonderful! We use a lot of disposable stuff for our family dinners. I am so sorry Mother. We don't use your fine china and silver. But I usually keep them downstairs in our unorganized storage room and I forget what I need when we need ti. So I get many duplicates. So one day I decided that the lower shelf would be dedicated to all this disposable stuff. It has really worked out well.
Sending out cyber hugs to Cynthia. If you need any help just reach back in your back pocket and feel our strength. We are always there for you. I still love your hair in our picture. It gives me the thought of a lovely women that is confident.
According to our meteorologist we were supposed to have an inch of snow tomorrow then rain on Saturday and then turn real cold again and everything turn to ice. Well whatever pressure cell that was just going to give us an inch didn't happen and now he has predicted 7 inches. HMMM, I like his previous story. I don't know if it got down to the -25 this morning or not. I was sound asleep. But with my leggings I wear now almost all the time under my jeans and under armor shirt under my sweatshirt I am quite warm even outside. Walmart has all their winter stuff on sale, ha ha, and I got one of those scarves that you can wear just as an infinity scarf or it can go up and put it over your head. It was on sale for $3. So with all my winter gear, I am quite warm to go outside. I don't have good boots though. My crazy husband actually shovels the yard to get to the car in the driveway. So you don't have to walk through the snow, just on top of a thin layer.

Yesterday was busy... glad I grocery shopped Weds.. went and got my hair cut, I got it cut like Jamie Lee Curtis.. so its super short but easy to take care of..
I ordered the vanity ,and got calls from ,contractors for tub surrounds,reglazing for the tub and refacing the cabinets.. so we can get some quotes.. I am doing the legwork and DH and I both have to be here for the contractors ,so most of it is on the weekends..
it is quite stressful doing this, but we will get through it all...
still cant visit DFIL, hope he is well...
sent the DH with a big ol salad today and grilled chicken,croutons and french dressing..
me I am taking a sweet potato some veggies, and maybe yogurt..
I am having a bridge prep done this afternoon.. and I will be trying to assist the dr as I do I will hold my own suction lol..
did stop at the dollar store and got some small storage containers, and organized the 1/2 bath and most of the master bath..

OK folks - some of you have asked about my knee exercises, so I will try to describe them.
- My left knee has been a problem on and off since I was 16. I had many investigations and no one could tell me what was wrong with it. :ohwell: Becsuse it was often a problem I tended to favour the right leg and so the left leg became weaker until I could hardly lift it without using my hands. With ankles that had sprained several times and pronation of the feet I was severely compromised with my mobility.
- I obtained some orthotics which were custom made and slso had some from the pharmacy for other shoes. After a bad flare up with my knee I went to a sports therapist at the leisure centre. She was the first person to diagnose a problem with the patella not running true, which is why the problem was intermittent. Why the doctors and surgeons didn't know this is a mystery to me as it appears to be a common problem, judging by the internet. She showed me how to strap the patella when it plays up.
- My task was to strengthen the muscles around the knee . My whole leg was thinner than the other one.
- I first did "clam shell" exercises lying on my side and knees bent, opening and closing my knees. I could only manage a few inches at first. She asked me to stretch my calves also.
- Then it was "two foot support" as in yoga. I can now do "one foot support" with my arms by my side and my other leg vertical. I have built those up and am now doing 22.
- I do squats with weights, very gingerly. Look for good form videos on the internet.
- I do leg raises with ankle weights, sitting on the bed with a cushion under my knees. Currently I raise 4 and a half pounds on my bad leg.
- A physio at the hospital suggested lunges, but my knee doesn't like them much. I do yoga ones, gently.
- He also suggested the one I do most often, which is standing on the bad leg with the knee bent and my bottom stuck out behind me. With the other leg I draw the alphabet in the air. This is a good one I think.
- I don't do all of these every day, but a good proportion of them, in rotation. Today I did the ankle weights and the "one foot support"..
All this work meant that I could very gingerly do all the activities on holiday, including climbing loads of steps and slowly come down them, one step at a time. I negotiated boulders and slippery slopes on a 6 mile walk. I can still have flare ups if I overdo things. No HIIT for me. No dancing or running. But it functions ok for my normal life.

18 degrees here with a wind chill of 6. Didn't stop the DH from bundling up to go to his beloved estate sales. He spends hours mapping out his course and then has to wait in the cold for them to open. He just called and said the first one he was going to had been cancelled. Told him to come on home.
Leslie, I haven't ironed in years! It has to be a very important occasion for me to set up the ironing board.

Hi ladies, I'm sneaking in here towards the back end of February seeking (and providing) support.
I joined MFP January 2014 having decided that enough was enough over the previous weeks. MFP tools helped me count calories and log exercise and I'd lost 14lb in five weeks... but my world ended, crumbled and died when my husband left me. We hadn't had a cross word and I had no idea that he was unhappy.
My best friend knew, I found out later, but she decided not to share it with me. She offered him a bed and now he is in her bed. So during those months I lost a husband and business partner, and my best friend. It was, and still is, a difficult thing to deal with. The stress resulted in a 70lb weight loss in a very short space of time... not healthy at all.
My weight loss stopped as I developed tummy troubles and I decided I had to gain some strength back so I ate more and exercised lots which maintained the weightloss... until this Christmas... where I have regained 15lb... not happy and not going to continue going backwards!
So... back to calorie counting and more exercise... but this time it is a struggle... I am an emotional eater and there is still a lot of stress and anxiety in my life... as I am running the business on my own and selling my house that I love... so I have got to find the strength to do 50 squats when I feel stressed instead of heading towards the biscuit tin (cookie jar for my American brethren).
One good thing that has happened is I have met a man who is nine years younger than me and is very fit; doing 100 push ups each morning and runs and cycles a lot. He is wonderfully encouraging as he trains others in fitness and kickboxing. However it is so easy to make dinner with him and he piles food on his plate, and my portion size has been creeping up... this I have to stop!!

Yesterday I broke down and logged the 2 pound gain I've had for over 2 weeks. Well today I logged a .8 pound loss. So back to a downward trend finally!
We've got frozen pipes here. Not burst yet thankfully! We've got all the taps open but getting just a trickle and no hot at all. Hubs is out purchasing a space heater for the crawl space to see if that will help them thaw. Warmed a big pot of water on the stove for bathing this morning. And it is a pony tail hair day.
3 below today with 25 mile per hour winds.

Good morning everyone! I'm so glad to hear the news that Selena found the owner of the little dog! Amazing!
Last night hubby and I went to a concert at the brand new performing arts center on campus. It's a beautiful building, and this was the first concert in the concert hall. We sat way up in the balcony and I don't think there was a bad seat in the place. The sound was great too. So, I didn't want to go to the concert wearing my baggy sweat pants, so I broke out a bigger pair (size 16) of black jeans that I had not donated yet. They were the dressiest of any of the clothes I still have. They seemed plenty big, but apparently they weren't. When I sat down the snap in the waistband hit just at the spot where my biggest incision is - right at the belly button - and about half way through the concert I started to feel some pain in my belly.
It didn't help that at intermission I read a message from one of my friends. I had asked her about her eye doctor's appointment that day, how it went, and she replied that her "fat acne" was better and her astigmatism was gone. Obviously an autocorrect thing (she meant far sight), but it struck me as extremely hilarious and I was laughing. It hurts so bad to laugh! Afterwards I had my pants undone in the car on the way home and immediately changed into my nice soft jammies. So, the moral of the story is, I'm not ready to wear jeans again just yet.
The incision had sort of a thick scabby crust on it, which was covered with superglue, and part of that popped off, but it was oozing a little crud, so I put some peroxide on it before I went to bed. It looks better this morning and feels better. I think that scab needed to come off.
Well, I have a lot of drafting to get finished before I can go glaze bowls, so I'd better get busy. Have a great day everyone!

Hi everyone!
I haven't checked in here since December! I see the thread is still going strong, how great is that! Thanks for keeping going, Barbie. I'm still chugging along, lost 3 pounds of holiday pudge in January and now working towards removing the excess that snuck up on me last year. Funny how it does that when we don't pay close attention.
We've had some fantastic weather here in NW Oregon, I've been busy clearing the yard & vegetable gardens of weeds. Prolific little buggers! Hubby and I started our pepper seeds under lights a couple of weeks ago, they're all popping up now and seem quite happy. Celery seeds have sprouted, too, I was glad to see that. They're soooo tiny! I sowed a few sugar-snap peas and some spinach directly in the garden last weekend. Next on the gardening agenda is to purchase new strawberry plants and get them in the ground.
I'm doing yoga and strength work again, taking a little break from intense aerobics since I hurt my knee last week by overdoing it. Typical me. I'm taking note of Heather's list of knee exercises!
Wendy, you've sure been through a lot, wow. My heart goes out to you! It's wonderful that you've met such an inspiring young man - yes, be careful of those portions, they do have a way of creeping up. I'm very good at measuring portions, enjoying a good meal, then going back in afterwards for a few more bites. That's where I get into trouble.

What's the deal with that tube of cookie dough in my fridge? It keeps jumping into my hands with a spoon. If I could just walk away with only the spoonful, things might be fine. But, I go against my rules, and sit down at the computer, until the sweetness gets to me. Stupid cookie dough - get out of my brain. At least I have been behaving the rest of my days, so no gains, but also no loss. Yesterday was the END - I WILL OVERCOME THE CALL OF THE DOUGH ! ! !
Allison - I prefer shower doors. They are more expensive, but I like them better. My DH prefers a shower curtain, as long as it is on a curved rod, so he has more space in the shower. Since they are harder to clean, I used to just replace the cheap inside curtain when it was too dirty and grimy.
Wendy - welcome. Hugs for all your loss. I will keep you in my prayers
Diana - and everyone with the bitter cold and freezing pipes. Warm Hugs ! Even my attached garage was 32 this morning, so I'm thankful for heated seats in my car, and slippers to keep feet warm in the house, and the electric blanket, that I cranked up to "6" a few nights ago.
I guess DH didn't like being ignored when he asked if he could work the overnight shift on our Anniversary, because he took himself off the list. I guess that means I have to budget my calories for a nice dinner out. Anything besides bowling alley food will be wonderful.

*Joyce, when we lived in the frozen North, we all put plastic bags over our socks before we put on our boots. It really helped keep our feet warm in the coldest weather. Glad your gear is keeping you warm.

*Allison, I personally vote for shower doors. I think they look better and even though you can wash a shower curtain, I feel like I keep the doors sanitized better. I slept on the sofa downstairs last night so Maggie (Our black lab that is an outside dog) could come in. She has a heater in the garage but it was going to be really cold and she loves to sleep in the house. The two poodles slept upstairs with their Daddy. I actually slept quite well and now need to go get in some exercise.

My word #1 is savor. I have to slow down and savor every bite.

well today I did one of the challenging expresso bike trails and I just didn't have it in me! there was a ghost rider (me from a previous ride) and usually if I see that it has caught up to me or passes me, i'm like, hello no!!! I pass it! but this time, I was like, buh byeeeeeee, I let it. can't be a stud all the time I guess0

Oops! I forgot to tell you all about the free advice I got from the Physical Therapist today: I have been using the handbike instead of the stationary bike because of my knee pain, and increasing the tension. Now the muscles in my lower-mid back are "complaining" (like the ribs, right above my waist, all the way around). He said that is good, and it means I am working the core muscles, and I am therefore strengthening my back (herniated disc) and abdominal muscles. His suggestion is 5 minutes on the stationary bike, nice and slow with no resistance, then 15 minutes on the hand bike with no resistance, until my muscles get used to this new exercise. The most important part is to be sucking in my tummy while exercising, to continue engaging those core muscles. So, that's what I will do today0

For those of you trying to avoid frozen pipes in this deep freeze gripping the country. A couple of things that might help.
Keep a slow trickle of water going with one of your faucets. If you have a two story an upstairs faucet is best. I know in some ways it is wasteful but not compared to frozen pipes. If your home has poor insulation this is even more important to try this step.
Also open up any cabinets or if you know piping goes through a closet ( we have a shower like that) open up cabinets or closet doors so they are heated like the rest of your home. Try to keep your home at least 55 degrees if you are leaving your home for a vacation.
My friends who have cabins when they winterize their home put anti-freeze in their toilets. I know that might be hard for our southern neighbors who are not used to this cold might find it hard to find.
If they do freeze a plumber may need to be called he will use special equipment to unblock the frozen pipes. Sometimes using a hairdryer like Mary's DH can work if you can get to the pipe. Also make sure you turn your water off if your pipes freeze.
Hope it does not happen to you.

Alison: Good luck with your dental procedure. We have one shower that doesn’t require a door and the other has doors. DDIL and DD both use shower curtains. DDIL is in a rental and can’t make permanent changes to the home. DS is career military, and they will probably wait to buy a home until he retires. DD likes her shower curtain.
WendyT: It sounds as though you’ve been through the wringer lately. I’m happy that you’ve met someone nice. Welcome to a great group.

Sylvia: I’m sorry that you were so uncomfortable during the concert. It sounds as though the concert hall is wonderful and I hope your next visit there is more pleasant. You do so much that it is easy to forget you recently had major surgery. I LOVE today’s jokes.
Joanie in Portland OR: It is great that you stopped in this morning. You provided just the right push. I need to get my snow peas planted this weekend. Last year I put climbing purple pod beans in behind them and had a great fall crop. I want to do it again.
Terri in Milwaukee: I have only one way to deal with the call of the cookie dough. I leave it in the grocery store where I can’t hear it. I don’t have kids at home who would eat the cookies and it is so much easier to avoid temptation.
Heather gave a wonderful description of what she’s been doing for her knee issues. I’m here because of knee issues, too, as many of you may remember. I gave myself bursitis while posting during a riding lesson a few years ago. The doctor recommended some knee exercises, which I still do but not as often as before. And I had a huge “aha” moment. That was when I realized how seriously overweight I’d become. I started taking yoga twice a week, which I now do three times a week. I had no idea how to lose weight and wondered if there was an app for that. That is how I found MFP and eventually all of you. Between MFP tracking systems, this group and yoga, I’ve managed to lose the weight, strengthen my leg, and get back to riding lessons. It has been a fabulous experience and I intend to keep it up indefinitely.
I hope that all of the newbies here will settle in and take advantage of the system and support that is freely available. This group is magic. Transformation takes time and effort, and you can do it.

Alison, I like a curtain with a curved rod, mostly because I like to sit on the edge of the tub to shave my legs (happens twice a year, like clockwork). And I put the curtain in the washing machine with bleach to keep it clean. My only experience with doors have been in other people's homes and they always looked grungy around the frames.

Weighing in on the glass door v. shower curtain discussion....
I like a shower curtain on a tub/shower combo, but a glass door on a shower-only (preferably frosted or opaque glass to hide spots and for privacy). The curved rods are very nice, too, but I don't have one in our guest bath and everyone seems to do just fine.
If you have animals or small children to bathe the glass doors on a tub are, to me, annoying. Good for containment, but awkward when you're trying to get them and they don't want to be gotten.... Also, I sometimes like to swap out shower curtains for winter or spring/summer. One is a solid color and the other is beachy stripes -- an inexpensive face lift/refresh for the bathroom, especially since it is so easy to make one. As for the liners, I just replace them when icky. The dollar stores ones have actually done well, but again, in a guest bath vs. day-to-day use.
Its even cold in Atlanta these days... yesterday's morning temp was 8, but it was a heat wave at 14 this morning. I had so many layers on yesterday and kept walking in the house to get warm, so I ended up walking over 10 miles in the house. Fitbits do keep you motivated for just a little more, just a little farther. After all, you wouldn't want to stop when you are just shy of 'x' miles or steps.

Never heard someone so young-18 to have it.
Fighting off a bug for a couple days and trying to stay warm in this bitter cold.

Just checking in. Sounds like everyone is doing great. I had a hectic week of travel but stayed within my goal so I'm feeling accomplished. Hoping I can keep the momentum through the weekend!!
Plan on getting more rest so I can start some resistance training next week. Time to kick it up a notch!!
