Hi everyone, just wanted to give you all a rundown of my trip to Atlanta and the Family Feud.
The schedule was really tight, I was actually IN Atlanta for about 28 hours, but 8 hours of that was sleep, 2 hrs getting ready, 1.5 hours travelling around town, and another 4 were at the airport, so for real, only had 12-ish hours to do anything! Once I got to the hotel, I met my family and Susan in the lobby. Introductions were made, and half the family retired while my son and nephew joined Susan and me for dinner. We had a liesurely dinner (slow service, despite not many customers), but the food was good. Conversation was great, and I really enjoyed getting to know Susan better. I hope she felt the same. We left the restaurant around 9-9:30ish, and I went back to my hotel to unpack and go to bed. Woke up with a wicked foot and leg cramp around 3:30 am and had to take a bath/shower to get rid of it, went back to sleep, and woke up for good at 6:30.
The competitors were picked up at 7 am to go to rehearsal at the studio, but I had time to have breakfast with my niece's husband and then we went on to the studio. Family had priority seating, but the taping didn't start until after 11 am. We got trained on how to be a game-show audience (hard work, lots of clapping, cheering, awww-ing at misses, and prompts for specific responses (BIG MONEY!), ETC. It's hard work being an audience member! Then the first families came in and the show started, lots of fun to watch, and our seats were all good. Steve Harvey is funny and personable, and talked to the audience during the commercial breaks, and answered questions. There were various competitions for cue cards and stuff. Each show took about 50-60 minutes to tape, then Steve would go do a wardrobe change and a new show started. We watched 2 shows, then they broke for lunch. Of course, the competitors were provided breakfast and lunch, but the rest of us were on our own. There were 4 of us family members/supporters, and luckily the 2 men walked to fetch lunch while the 2 of us ladies in heels waited patiently (we did try to walk there, but it was a lot of hills, and the guys graciously volunteered to make the trek). We reported back at the scheduled time but then were told that we had to wait until OUR family was competing to get back into the audience, so we waited for 2 more hours. By that time it was time for me to head back to the airport, so I was heading out when they were starting their first game :( ! I heard from them later when I got back into Austin, they won 2 games and $20K, and were going back this morning to compete again! Today, they lost the 3rd round :( . But they had a great time, and so did I, even though I didn't get to watch them. Unfortunately, I will have to watch them on TV in September along with everyone else - If you watch the show, look for the Bell family from Austin, TX.
I got in lots of walking at the airports, and didn't do bad with my food either, so I didn't gain.... but I didn't lose either. Will have to get back to work tomorrow!

@ushkii~LOL, it’s the simple things in life.

@Laurie~I’m very glad to hear that your dad is doing better and has been released to the rehab facility, I’m glad you are feeling better too. No ride this week, it has been a monsoon around here—this rainy weather is out of the ordinary, we are usually in a drought and a lot of the lakes are at flood stage (really unsafe for Memorial Day weekend festivities). The park I ride in is pretty much under water right now.

@becca~Glad you had a good talk with your sister. I have one younger sister, we aren’t exceptionally close but I can’t imagine not being a part of each other’s lives—even living in different states.

@Karen~Nashville sounds like fun, special occasion or just to get away?

@Tracy~Sounds like a busy but fun time in Atlanta, I’m glad you and Susan got to meet up and visit. Some friends of mine went to Los Angeles a few years ago and went to the taping of Hot in Cleveland and a game show (the name escapes me)—said it was lots of fun but the game show was too interactive. LOL I’m sorry you missed your family’s taping though. :frowning:

AFM~Its just been rainy here, it’s so out of the ordinary. Like I mentioned to Laurie above, I haven’t been able to get out on my bike because of it—did make it to the gym though a couple of days this week, schedule hasn’t allowed the other days. They said on the news yesterday so far this spring there has been 42 tornadoes in Texas—last year there were 4 total! :astonished:

My trip to CO in July is all set, I fly in on the 3rd to surprise my parents and then fly home on July 6th (practically had to beg my boss to let me off this day to fly home)—airfare was crazy expensive but it’s worth it to make this anniversary special for my parents. So plans are coming together, hopefully my sister was able to secure the photographer. Other than that, just a few minor details of the celebration to work out—I think they’re going to be really surprised. How my sister will get a 5yo and 8yo to not spill the beans remains to be seen.

    Have a great Memorial Weekend!

    Good morning everyone.

Happy Buy a Musical Instrument Day
Date When Celebrated: Always on May 22nd
Isn't it obvious how to celebrate Buy a Musical Instrument Day? If you are a musician in need of a new instrument, today could be a very good day indeed! If you have been considering taking up a musical instrument, today can be your starting point. And, the good news is you're never too old to begin playing a musical instrument. Many senior citizens pick up musical instruments as a hobby. They even form senior bands, often playing in public.
Okay..... Just in case you haven't figured out how to participate in this day...........
Go out and buy a musical instrument!

Not sure if you listen to Pandora or not, but they have stations dedicated to workout music--I listen to the classic rock power workout station a lot.

thanks everyone on the positive words regarding my sister.. I have two sisters, one 7 yrs older than me living in Colorado, and my middle sister that lives 2 hrs from me. I think being a military wife, and living in Japan for 7 yrs, I have put a higher importance on phone calls, or the absence of phone calls. When I would call my Mom, it was reconnecting with everything stable, and secure. So if someone just doesn't ever call, I take it as a personal thing. I have learned to let that go, to realize I don't have to "check in" with family for feel ok. That when she didn't call me, it wasn't that she didn't care. In her words, it was because I had so much on my plate, she didn't wish to burden me with her problems. I told her, that is what family does...no judgements or expectations. I told her that sharing the woes of each others lives can make it less a burden. Carry the load and all that.
Today I walked with 3 of my TOPS friends down our trails that border Youngs Bay. My husband walked behind us, as our security, but then pooped out... lol We did 2.73 miles, and I wasn't even really tired. We plan on doing that M-W-F, and Tues and Thurs is the pool. Our 16 yr old decided that instead of getting a job like we suggested, he will walk and go to the pool with us, during the summer. He wants to buff up before he enlists in the Navy! Sadly our Eldest Son didn't make Petty Office First Class, nor did our middle son make Petty Officer 2nd Class. Both their rates are really full, and advancement is difficult. They are still young so, they were not too dishearted.
Tonight we are attending a concert at the historical Liberty Theatre in Astoria to listen to the 1980's group "Quarterflash". Im excited and need to get ready. Take care all! Becca

Holly-Good luck finding a job and I Hope you check in with us often. Remember you can always share your feelings with us without judgement, we are always willing to lend an 'eye' or ear as the case may be. I hope you can at least get outside and walk just for a change of perspective if nothing else.

Kelley- Sorry to hear about the drenching rain you are receiving.

Karen- Hope that you get all your grading done over the weekend so you can enjoy your trip.

Made it to work today and my throat has stopped hurting for the most part. It was a busy day since I ended up playing tour guide to the incoming class of 6th graders. It is sad when we are able to pick out the trouble makers for next year just by their behavior today. I had a couple of parents of current students escorting their younger children so that was fun talking with them.

I am ready to get back to exercising after taking this week off due to illness. I ended up resting after work tonight since I did not want to over do it and have the strep throat reappear. I could have walked but was tired from working all day and just did not get motivated to move around.

This weekend I am planning on biking three days. On Sunday, I might swim as well depending on how I feel.
I am also thinking about what to do for my birthday. Tempted to have a party but might organize a kayaking or biking trip. I would like to do something active then have a party.

Hope everyone has a great Memorial Day weekend. Thank you to everyone who has served in the Military or had parents that served.

@laurie-- glad you are feeling better and ready to get back to exercise. What day is your birthday? I love your idea to organize something active. I managed to get 5 more essays done today, so only 20 to go. All of the other stuff on my list is fairly easy/quick to grade in comparison.

@becca-- I remember that band; hope you enjoy the concert!

@holly-- nice to see you check in. Sorry you are struggling to find work; my DH is still out of work and it is frustrating.

@kelley-- The Nashville trip is just for fun. Going with some friends I know through work for a long weekend.

    Friday Fitness:
Went back to PT today and he thinks the tendon in my shoulder is "thickening" and causing the joint to "freeze up" as he put it. He spent most of the 30 minute session working the soft tissue. At one point he moved my arm the wrong way and got to see my pain first-hand. That's never happened before; it's always just been me trying to explain it, so I think it was actually good that I could point to exactly where it hurt, as it was hurting, and that he could witness the duration of the pain as well.

I have a hair and pedi appt tomorrow afternoon, so my plan is to head out a couple of hours ahead of time to grade at the starbucks near the salon. Some friends invited me to go to a festival in the city tomorrow night, and my sister's MIL invited us for a bbq on Monday. However, I think I'm going to skip both and focus on grading and getting some stuff done around the house. I still have to finish trading out winter for summer clothes in my closets and dressers, so I can figure out what to pack for my trip at the same time.

@mnwalkingqueen - Please stay! One of the things I so love about this "group" is the acceptance. Any one in any place - losing, gaining or maintaining is welcome here. I know I would hate to see you leave because you felt you did not belong here. We all belong if we want to.
I am so very sorry to hear about your depression. I have been there at many times in my life.
I have vented, ranted and bragged enough on here and have always felt welcome.

Happy Memorial Day to all. I feel so very fortunate to live in this country with our proud heritage of our military.
Thank you all who have served or who is a support to someone who has served.

    Love to all,

    Hi all,
Just checking in. Trying to get back on track after disrupting my schedule this week. Food was ok the whole week but not much activity, and I've been so busy at work that lunch was at my desk.
If the weather cooperates I should get some exercise trying to cut some grass and do other yard work this weekend. The new dog we got is so big, and he needs to be outside a lot, so we've been putting him on a lead attached to the porch. Unfortunately there's so much stuff on the ground and on the porch, it takes him no time at all to get his lead all tangled up, so this weekend it is time to clean up the porch.
Been wanting to do that for awhile anyway, last year I invested about $1600 in outdoor furniture for the new porch, and it is completely buried with stuff so that you hardly even know it's there! And, our grass is so high, it comes up past my knees in some places. I wish I didn't have to work, it would be much better if I had time to do stuff around the house without trying to cram it into the weekend when all I want to do is relax!
@mnwalkingqueen - Holly, I'm so sorry to hear that you're still looking for work. I know that it can be so stressful to have to go through that. Just a suggestion, but if you get out of the house and do some volunteer work, like at a soup kitchen or something, it will lift your spirits and you might just meet someone (another volunteer?) that can help you with your job search. At the very least, it will help you get outside of yourself and possibly help with the depression. Good luck my friend, I pray that very soon you will find a wonderful job.
@kah (Kelly) - We're in the same boat, been trying to get the 5 acres mowed but can't because everytime it starts to dry out some the rain comes pouring down again. Yesterday, it never got above 75 degrees - in the middle of May in Central TX!!!! Wow!
@lauriek70 - I've been wanting to try Kayaking but I'm afraid I'm still too wide, and wouldn't be able to get up off my knees after sitting like that for however long. Give me another 25 lb loss tho and I'm up for trying!
Well gotta go. Y'all have a great evening, and a busy fun filled weekend!

    Hello everyone!

New to this group/thread...my intention is to lose 100 lbs by this time next year...trying to drop 2 lbs a week.
In the past, this was doable, but at 64, my metabolism seems slower than it used to be.
    Wishing everyone a healthy weekend!

Hi all read all your posts and glad that you are all doing fine and things going well for you all. Thank God. Today the scales finally moved down today, success! I'm feeling great!
Not happy with what is happening in Ireland at the moment but there is nothing I can do about it. I'm still proud to be Irish and proud to be a Christian.
Have my niece staying with me, she is 4 so don't have time to write more.

Hi everyone! Hope all in the US have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend.

@jorinya-- glad your hard work is paying off on the scale.

    @violet-- welcome! :smile:

@tracy (goins)-- I also plan to burn some calories doing yard work this weekend if the weather cooperates. My DH has been mowing, but has done zero weeding, so I need to get on that.

    Saturday Success:
I did much better at my protein goal the 3rd week of May--hope to continue the trend as the month closes out. I've also made decent progress on the essays and even turned down an invite to attend a festival in the city so I can grade tonight.

I went and got my hair and pedi done in preparation for my trip. Tonight I plan to start figuring out what I will pack--hoping to manage with just carry-on luggage. Should be doable for just a 3-night stay. Weather looks like it will be so-so; warm but some rain in the forecast.

Gotta go grade some essays now. :)

    May Challenge:

Sunday Share ... good morning everyone. I've been hovering but haven't posted for a while. Truth be told, I've been eating in my old patterns ... not really thinking much about portion sizes or food contents, eating at will, indulging in food's I've long refrained from. The body and the scale tell me it's time to stop and get back on an organized plan. Yet, the real truth is that right now, I don't much give a Hoover Dam. There's a wake-up coming, right around the corner. In the meantime, I'm logging faithfully and using that information to assess what my body and secret mind think is the amount of food I should eat.

Tomorow is my check-in day and the first day of the week ... and today I'm having a visit with my sister. We plan to visit the cemetary where our parents and one of her son's remains are buried. My dad was a war vet and I will bring a flag for him. My sister will bring a flower for her son and we will both bring lilacs and lily of the vally for our mom. Then we will have lunch and remember them with many stories that we tell and retell all the time ... so much so that her grandchildren, who never knew them, are positive they did. Just like how our mother told us about our own relatives in that far-away land our folks came from.

One small success I had yesterday ... it was the 51st anniversary of my wedding day to the father of my son. For years I'd grow melancholy as this day approached and feel saddness and sorrow over the destruction our break-up caused in my and our son's life. This year, I didn't remember the day until I looked at the calendar today! Yippie .... perhaps that old deamon has finally put it's head on the chopping block and has faded away into history. About time.
As Kaye says ... onward and downward. All I have to do is follow-through. Niki

@Lori - those pictures are wonderfully inspiring. Your smile says so much. I also appreciate hearing you weigh in on the thoughts I had rumbling around in my head about "fat" "average" "Normal" and "thin" so glad your expounded on "Fit" what a great example you are of what fit is. to think you will do a triathalon soon - you go girl!

@CareerDiva - you have really amped things up for your own personal responsibility by using lots of the MFP functions and thats great! I'm proud of you.

@Ushkii - Sorry to hear about your calf pain you're having and I'm praying for you that it gets better too -it might be a spasm but thats just a blind guess.

@Skinny - finally! What a great Doctor to go ahead with the steroid shot right away. Does it hurt much where the injection went? I'll bet you're so excited to work with a PT and get a program designed for yourself.

@Laurie - ah, so sorry your dad is offered such grim choices. But without surgery, medicine can be a fine and reasonable option, especially for such an inactive person. I do continue to pray for your whole family.
Oh I'm so glad he's in the rehab hospital now. Its amazing how intensive they are about physical therapy there. They had my stepmom going 3 times a day after a while!

@Goins - you know you are living one of my BUCKET LIST ITEMS ???? I've always wanted to attend a game show taping - and I LOVE Steve Harvey - he cracks me up. I'm envious you got to meet Susan!
Oh, you'll have to remind us in September to watch the Bell Family. Also what were they wearing - were they dressed alike?

@Annr - congrats on 2 nice things happening - you and your sister closed a growing gap between you - and that is very precious - I'm so happy for you, Ann! And your speech went well - and I think that your 2 pounds up was just the weight of that speech on your shoulders weighing you down. I'll bet if they'd weighed you after the speech you'd have been even or down a pound!

@Kah - Yeah, I'll BET those were hard tickets to buy and/or arrange what with bosses these days, and a rough holiday to fly, and good luck to your sis keeping it a secret. Of course I'm sure there's absolutely NO PROBLEM on your end! But, wow, it will bring wonderful memories for your parents. Your mom will be so happy as most women would be and I hope your dad will be too!

@Morgori - Tom - I don't play a musical instrument - the common kind, but I have 2 "chimes" in my house that can't play without me.

One is a wooden box with tiny metal beads on the floor, and flat cylindrical bells suspended in the middle. There is sticky tape on both the floor and ceiling. So, as it sits the beads tend to adher loosely to the sticky tape. When I turn the box over, the weight of the tiny beads slowly force them to drop off the (now) ceiling of the box and they strike the bells in the middle as they fall. The bells chime very faintly. The beads fall slowly, and for several hours. It is either beautiful or annoying.

The other instrument looks more like a traditional chime, it is an open wooden frame 12 inches tall and 20 inches long and about 1/2 inch thick. Suspended from the top piece are metal tubes in graduated sizes from 10 inches tall to 3 inches tall, each separated from the next by about 1/4 inch space. One only needs to drag a finger along the side of the tubes to hear an sweet ringling sound of the do-ray-mi scale. Said one, "its the sound you hear when an angel gets its wings". It is a sound effect heard in many songs.

Oh, I have a kazoo as well.

AFM - Thanks for the good wishes. I've had this sciatica for about 5 weeks. Dummy me I waited that long before I realized that's what it was. I pushed off my symptoms on other things - that I had gained too much weight and that's why I couldn't stand up; that's why I couldn't walk very far, that's why I couldn't stand and do the dishes, couldn't vacuum, etc, etc. I blamed it all on my weight. The doc really chewed me out. He said I would do serious damage and force myself to have surgery (Which I want to avoid) if I put off the cortisone injections this way. So I got them this past monday, one in each hip (the sciatic nerve on each side) and it is like a total turn -around, but I can see how waiting affected me, I have lost strength in my legs, now I can't walk as far, etc, etc. And I am about to go on my vacation Tues for a week so I am the loser for blaming my weight when I should have been taking responsibility for my medical condition. I've had these shots regularly. Its not like its new. I've had them every six months now for 2 years, and he said I could keep myself out of surgery (for a herniated disc) by having these shots every 6 months for many years to come. But, I had to get in sooner as soon as when symptoms come!
@Skinny the above paragraph was sort of written for you since I suspect you may go down this road with your shoulder......although I don't think you are a blockhead like me! LOL!
Well, tomorrow's my Birthday - 64! and Tuesday I leave and I'm back on July 3rd See y'all then!

    Happy Sunday to all.
@Lauriek70 - So glad your dad is close by, hope all goes well for his recovery. The 3 day weekend will help you as well. Hopefully you will be back to scratch by Tuesday. I look forward to your ideas to celebrate your birthday. Mine is coming at the end of June and it is big one so I may steal some of your ideas.
@GOINSTD12 - So sorry you missed the taping. But glad you enjoyed your trip. One of my customers just did an invisible fence type thing for their dogs. The dog wears a collar and you walk a perimeter and if the dog goes beyond the perimeter they get a small shock from the collar. You do not have to bury a wire anymore it is all done GPS on the collar.
@kah68 - For my parent's 50th we planned the entire party and only told them after it had been paid for. Then they could decide who to invite. It was a great success and they still talk about it.
@vschwgrt1 - I too listen to Pandora, my favorite is Pop Fitness. They even have a station for cycling.
@Annr - There were 5 girls in my family. We lost one when I was 3, another this year. I am quite close to the one sister who works for me. Yes, they are a pain but I could not imagine my life without her.
@violet806 - Welcome to the thread. This is a great place to get camaraderie as you travel your weight loss journey. Post often so we can get to know you.
@NK1112 - You can get a handle on your eating. You've done it before, you can do it now.
@RobinsEgg - Your chimes sound wonderful to me. Now you have been duly chastised by the doctor. No need to ignore your body any longer or blame everything on "the weight".
@skinnyjeanzbound - I must admit I proof read my posts several times before I hit Post Reply. I know I do not always use proper spelling, grammar, punctuation etc.. In my mind I know you do not mind but am still self concious.
AFM - Yesterday I did a 20 mile bike ride but forgot my inhaler. About mile 15 I had to slow down quite a bit to catch my breath while going past some lilacs but still ended up with a pretty good time. Did a 5K run today and shaved 5 minutes off the time from last weekend. My swim went well. I am feeling positive about the race next weekend. I just hope for good weather. Not sure if my resolve will sitck around if it rains. I hate being cold.
A rather boring day here. Rainy, not much on TV. I may take a nap. Nice to have a day without all the bustle.

    Love to all,
    Lori <3

I could just say "ditto" to Nikki's post today. I've been lurking, but not posting, eating terribly, having trouble with my food, especially the mindless eating. She has one up on me because I haven't been logging consistently. My foot hasn't responded well to treatment so it still hurts. I'm up about 5# on the scale in the last few weeks. Friday was my birthday. My son and dil did cook dinner, but we didn't really do anything else. I made myself lemon bars which were delicious, but a really foolish decision. I gave the last of them away today.
DH is really sick. I think that I posted about the bladder infection while we were in UT in March. We went to an After Hours Clinic then. A few weeks later he was sick again. His regular dr was not available so we saw a young dr in the same clinic. He again diagnosed bladder infection. Then Wed night he told me that he was sick again. Thurs we saw his regular Dr. He told us that men almost never get bladder infections. He has a prostate infection. It will take up to 90 days if antibiotic to clear it up. He was so sick Friday that he could barely communicate. He didn't even acknowledge my birthday. His temp went up to 102.6. He seems some better, but I found out this afternoon that he mixed up his meds and hasn't been taking the antibiotic. He didn't feel well enough for church, and he never misses church. Yesterday I mowed the lawn, which he usually does. That was good exercise anyway. Our lawn would certainly never make a golf course!
Sorry about the long dump. I guess I just needed to tell someone. School is out. Nicole has to go for part of the day on Tuesday. I'm looking forward to a break from the kids. Our local pool opened on the last day of school. Water aerobics starts this week. I'm excited about that.
Welcome to the new people. Congratulations on the successes.
    Onward and downward. Kaye
