I went to the 8:45 am water aerobics class, when I got there was told the pool was not working properly and the water temp was over 90 degrees. They went ahead and had class but we moved a little more slowly. At least I got some workout but no where near as intense as usual. It was hot! They closed the pool after that class. Hope they have it fixed by tomorrow morning. Although we are supposed to get a storm the evening and rain through mid day tomorrow so the pool may be closed anyway. Depending if there is lightening with the storm. I'll go ahead and ride the stationery bike later this afternoon.

Good morning ladies! I am at my old house trying to get it ready for the new owners. I want to clean and vacuum. My weights are still here so I'm going to do my strong lift 5X5. I am really glad that I added the sumo squats. They hit a different part of the hips and thighs. I also feel like I am doing more exercise by adding them. I am down to only doing my weight training one hour every other day. I don't do any cardio at all anymore. I will have to take measurements and pictures. I was supposed to do it yesterday but did not have my scale at the new house.

MNMargaret - you're right about Walker having a museum. I haven't been in there for years. I will have to go when I get time. Your flowers are beautiful!

Pip- you are so sexy and such an inspiration of what hard work and determination can accomplish! Thanks for sharing your life with us.

Dee Dee - you're right I do love my new home. We finally got some rain last night as well. We really needed it.

Michele- you and Vince can bring those paint brushes over here and we can have a painting party!

DJ- it is like a vacation home! I saw your picture and you have a vacation paradise! Isn't retirement awesome!

Renny- aren't you lucky to have your hands full! Grandchildren are the best!

Sylvia- I'm with you, I want to be Pip. Such an inspiration. But, so are you! I've seen your transformation and you rock!

Tina - sorry to hear that you will not be seeing any of the DH's daughters and grandchildren. I'm sure he is disappointed. (((hugs)))

Janetr- I also need to be better about logging everything! Isn't it nice the support we get here!

Barbie - I am amazed that you can get so many steps in! I just started tracking mine and it is difficult to get the 10,000! Good job!

Lillian- gardening is a lot of hard work! No wonder you are wiped out!

Linda - I agree with DJ you can't fix stupid! I was instill him a yo-yo dieter! I have a hard time resisting sweets. MFP is helping more than anything. I still have set backs. The encouragement I get on here really helps though!

Joyce- I'm glad that you were able to enjoy your DGDs.

Sharon- you were a busy lady! Some people can be really rude. Strange how people act sometimes.

Heather- so sorry that your DS did not come to visit. (((hugs)))

Lisa- great that you were able to compete in a 5k! That is amazing with your knees!

Grits- I hope you feel better soon! Having anything wrong with your sinus is not fun. My DH has trouble all year long.

Peach - your menu for your dinner sounded great. Sometimes the calories in certain dishes surprises me as well. At least if you know the calorie content then you can decide how much you want to eat.

Penny- I use red pepper to keep out rabbits and deer from my garden. I shake it all over the ground once a week. He gets up there nose and they won't continue sniffing in that area.

Drkatiebug- you have to let us know how that baby foot works.

DJ - I am having trouble with connecting to the Internet as well. I wonder if it's the smoke in the air LOL.

Yvonne - so sorry to hear about the devastation of your area and your sisters. (((hugs)))

Katla- i'm glad to hear that you are going to be riding again. The bike shorts would be a good idea for padding. I'm quite experienced at riding and have heard of saddle sores but never experience them myself. I've read to wear breathable underwear, apply baby powder before and after, shower immediately after ride. Don't ride if you have sores. Have fun!

    Have a great day everyone!

Hope it's OK to hop in here! I just rejoined MFP today after a few years away, two spine'neck surgeries in 3 years, lowered metabolism and an added unwanted 35 pounds! My name is Linda and I am from Wisconsin. I work from home as a Pampered Chef consultant. I have three grown children. I like to walk for exercise and pleasure and use a fitbit to track my steps. I also enjoy kayaking and gardening. I am 54.

    My July Goals are:

    Track food & exercise
Drink more water (any will be more!)
walk 10,000 steps at least 5 days a week
Don't let number on scale stop me!

I look forward to knowing you all better and celebrating your success!

I'm so glad I have this message board to come to!! I want to lose weight so badly! I know I just have to keep my mind focused. My old excuse was...."I don't really care about what people think of me!" BUT...It's not about others, it's about me and my HEALTH!! I have to do it!! SO, my best friend and I decided July 1st that this is a NEW MONTH...and we were going to try to lose 10 pounds in a month!! This group is awesome!! Thanks for reaching out and giving me ideas. I am trying to go VERY LOW carb...and no sugar. ALSO...trying to count the calories!! My daughter recently lost 25 pounds in the last six months and she looks beautiful!! I need to help her with good food choices. Trying to make it ONE DAY at a TIME!!! Thanks again for the support!! You all are great!! :)

Penny - We only have a few hummingbirds here - mostly ruby-throats - but when we lived in New Mexico, one of my favorite times of the year was migration season. Believe it or not, I would dream about hummingbirds in the spring and as soon as that happened I'd put out the feeders. Within a few days I'd see scouts! We had broadtails all summer, but the rufous passed through in the spring and fall. That's when the show got really spectacular, between the parabolic mating flights of the broadtails and the aggressiveness and fiery color of the rufous.

Katla - I never thought a tankini would be for me, but that's one of the best reasons I can think of to try one out!

JanetR - Ugh, hot water aerobics sounds dreadful! Good on you for sticking it out... I'd never have managed it. I'm a wimp when it comes to getting too hot... never understood how hot yoga practitioners could stand it!

Mary - When we sold our place last October we just about killed ourselves moving and then I spent two more days getting the empty house really really clean for the new owners. I hope your buyers appreciated all your hard work!

@Yvonne in TX - I was worried about my feet and legs swelling badly. Hot water draws the fluid into your lower extremities. Hot tubs are horrible for me. So far so good. I did NOT work as hard as I normally do tho.

Lori, that's the most important step. Decide you are doing it for you. Add as much extra movement in your day as possible and log everything you eat. You go girl. You've got this. Always great to have a friend to do it with.

    Happy Monday ! ! !

Sylvia – I know many people consider their pets to be just like kids, and it sounds like your cat is exactly that. When both my kids were little, they came to me when sick and to dad when injured (personally I wish it were the other way around; I can handle blood easier than emisis).

Linda – although it is a joke, all my friends are familiar with the term “justifiable homicide”. I would NEVER do it, but the stupid things my hubby does and/or says would make it justifiable. // I will post a pic of my next project. I suspect I will get several done next week, as DS has a minimum of 5 days of bowling next week, so between the Hotel room and the bowling alley, I should get plenty of crochet completed. I am currently working on a Headband/hat that looks like kitten ears. I don’t have a pattern, so keep your fingers crossed. // Kate – yours knows how to apologize? Even if I give mine the exact words, anything close to “I’m sorry” gets dropped off.

Joyce – Thanks for venting. It is my understanding that the pile just “spontaneously combusts” every now and then when it starts getting too big (at least in my imagination that’s how it works).

Sharon – Isn’t it sad when people are so unhappy in their lives that they feel the need to make up drama, complain, and attempt to make other people’s lives miserable? Kudos to you for keeping calm in the face of such complainers. At last year's Independence Day Parade we escorted both Vets and City Council members, and every woman in the vehicles complained because they thought they deserved convertibles, not brand new SUV's. This year we were armed with "I am a volunteer, and this is the vehicle I was assigned to drive. You can walk if you wish." The Vets never expressed anything less than appreciation.

Yvonne – Hugs for all the flooding.

Katla – Although I never used it, I did see something at FleetFarm that was marketed as helping with saddle sores. I wish you luck in that area. // I also like the tankini for myself. I enjoy relaxing poolside, but NEVER in the sun for more than a few minutes. I can burn in the shade of a tree, so I use sunscreen all the time, and try to stay in a shaded area. Because of my weight and hot flashes, I am often underdressed, but try to keep it flowing instead of tight.

Heather – All I can offer is hugs, so here is another hug (((((HUG))))). I hope it was long enough and hearty enough for the time-being. (I will send more later - just ask when you are in need or want)

Mia – it is my belief that the lanterns land back on the ground, because one of my Facebook friends posted a picture of one that landed in her yard. I suppose if they were made from a bio-degradable paper . . . ?

Lori – Kudos on your dedication to yourself, your daughter, and your friend. It is lovely to have support. I hope you find joy in this new lifestyle.

The rain just started, which is good for the grass and flowers, but not good for baseball. It seems it only rains on days we are supposed to play baseball. Hopefully it will be finished, and the pitcher’s mound will be dry by 3-4:00pm.

I am truly loving the conversations of the hummingbirds. I have tried and failed with feeders. I have only seen hummingbirds a few times in my life. I may try a feeder again soon.

The rain has stopped. I hope that means baseball tonight. DS was "on his game" Friday, and I'd like to see more of the same. Plus, the High School season is finished, so his friend will be playing again, too, and it's a hoot watching the 2 of them on the field. I am so blessed in that even though DS and DH make me crazy and know how to push my buttons, they both make me laugh at least once a day, too.

I bought a HUGE bag of cherries yesterday, and plan to eat at least 30 cherries every day (1.5 servings?). I hope I can find time to buy another bag while they are still $1.99 per pound and still in stock.

    Hugs for Everyone ! ! !

    Pip great city views.

Yanniejannie on could say I have a few hostas. Over the last twenty five years we have lived here I have divided them so they line most of our gardens. What I lack ion variety I more than make in quantity. LOL I tell friends if you want a green or variegated hosta just ask me.

Penny I have had some luck with marigolds and basil surrounding some of my plants. I am trying that suggestion of Irish Spring original formula. Too early to tell how effective that is. At least I do like its scent.

Mary I agree gardening is hard work. For me it is my exercise of the summer. The reward is I have beautiful flowers to cheer me up and the picture is a salad I made from the vegetable garden. My neighbor has a fenced in area so we do not have to worry about deer and rabbits. We share the work and harvest.jci0um2nbrpb.jpg

What a morning! I got up early and left the lake with Spot, drove him home and dropped him off, then went to pick up he kids and take them to the library. DGD#1's film club lasted longer than I expected. I was supposed to get to the rental car place at 11:30 but it was closer to 12:00. But they swapped the small SUV for a mini van. The only problem with it is that it's nicer than the van I wrecked, and the kids want to keep it. The darned thing has 2 video players in the back! Stupid granny could not figure out where the dvd's would even go in, if we ever decided to use it. Finally, later when hubby and I were messing around with it, one of us hit a secret button (ok, so it says LOAD right on the button) and the screen flipped down and the dvd goes in a slot behind it. So I'm going to the library to check out a dvd and try it out before the kids ride in it again.

Hubby drove home with the other two dogs and dropped them off, then came into town to meet me at th studio. We went to our insurance company and talked to the agent. We still have not gotten approval from the other insurance company to fix our car, so we asked him to jump into it. Also, hubby is concerned about our car now having "diminished value" because it has now been wrecked. So if we tried to sell it and someone looked on carfax it would say it had been wrecked and so it would be worth less. Our insurance agent didn't know anything about that and put us in touch with someone at the state insurance commission, who said it's really hard to get anything for that so nobody really does it. It's all over my head anyway. I just want the thing fixed.

When I took the kids home from the library we sat in the lobby of the apartment building waiting for my son to get back from running an errand. We had checked out three library books and I had the little guy reading his book to me. He actually did surprisingly well, getting some fairly big words. And he was sounding out some he didn't know. He is going into first grade in the fall. After about 15 pages he got tired though. Or stubborn. He refused to read any more.

Now, I've finished the little bit of drafting I had waiting, so I'm going back to the library and then to hit a few thrift stores, just for fun. Taking DGD#2 to gymnastics at 5:30, so supper will have to be after 6:30. I hate to eat late, but can't help it this time.

I hope everyone is having a great Monday.

Mary from Minnesota – Whenever I read about your Sumo squats I am filled with admiration for you. While my knees are ever so much better than they once were, the thought of squats terrifies me. My knees ache when I just stand on a riser and do touch downs. I hope to reach a point where squats are not so painful.

    July goal:
Continue to honestly log food every day
Continue to meet PT one day a week for strength training
Start one hour a week of aerobic exercise
Stop Iced tea overload. 24 oz. iced tea daily plus 40 oz. water
Word of the month – gratitude

Thanks for the suggestions on how to keep various pests out of the garden. Unfortunately, gardening conditions here are so severe that basil is out of the question. :'( Even marigolds struggle! I would totally try the red pepper trick against the hare except that sprinkling red pepper once a week isn't an option, at least not this year. I'll only be here for a few more days, then it's off to the parents in New Hampshire and I won't be back until mid-August. Hopefully the strawberries will almost be ripe by then, if they've survived marauding wildlife.

Yep, it's a challenge gardening at this latitude. Spinach bolts immediately because it never gets dark, and those poor spinach plants need their beauty sleep. Same thing with corn. Beans and squash require much more warmth than they could ever get.

But some crops do exceedingly well. Carrots, dill, potatos, everything in the cabbage family — and strawberries! Things grow slowly because of the low temperature, but they also suck up the 24-hour daylight and end up being incredibly aromatic. The scent of a ripe strawberry from northern Norway will bowl you over!

I'm posting a pic of the strawberry patch with its makeshift enclosure. As I mentioned, it's not pretty, but I hope it will work. You can't see any strawberries. That's because everybody here keeps their strawberries (and many other crops) under non-woven cloth to give them a little extra warmth and protection. But sheep and hares just bite straight through.

To the right of the strawberry patch is one of the two little streams that run through our lot. This one emerges from a spring just left of the big white rock in the background. We can take water straight out of the stream and drink it as is.

Incidentally, this picture was taken at about 10.30 in the evening. Full daylight on an overcast day. It will look exactly the same at midnight.

You've found a very supportive group of women. Stop in often. My best advice is to count calories and log every bite and swallow. If you burn more calories than you consume, you will lose weight. Be patient with yourself. It took me over 2 years to lose the weight, and now I work at keeping it off. I expect to log my food forever. 10 pounds is a lot to lose in a single month. Don't be discouraged if you take longer to reach your goals.

A man was checking his itemised lawyers bill. One item read:-

Spotted you across the street. Crossed over to discuss a legal point in your case. When I got there it was not you after all.

Katla - the roads out here only get hard packed on the tire tracks, I'm usually to the side, and the road up to the big house, which is 3 of my 4 miles, is all loose gravel, much like running through shallow sand. Plus I keep my steps small, feet low to the ground, as close to no impact as I can while still using a running stride. Haven't ridden a bike since my brakes malfunctioned and I faceplanted over the handlebars, losing quite a bit of skin to road rash--it was dozens of years ago. Don't mind the recumbent stationary bikes, but regular ones, the seats are just painful, so I tend to avoid. My legs are about 26 inches long, so adjusting even the recumbents to keep them from either bending the knee too far or hyperextending it is often impossible... My Mama always said if she rode a bike again, it would have to have a tractor seat--and now I know why. Kinda in the same boat.

Mia - I actually worried about breathing issues as well during the powder run, so wore a bandana around my neck that I could pull up over my face if needed - but the powder throwers were all warned to stay at shoulders and below with their powder throws. The finale was everyone throwing handfuls of powder in the air... I just took a deep breath during the count and held it until the cloud had settled, no big deal.

Off to writer's workshop - have a good night, my peoples...

Had to post a pic of my cutest car ever! I thought I would never learn to drive. I thought that I would be one of those people that didn't learn. But then I thought I would not have to deal with my husband's liver disease. And so 2 years ago, I did get my license. I learn how on this cute Chevy Spark...affectionately called my "Sparkbug". She is a great little car, and especially since we got last summer a bobble-head kind of hula dancer lady. (Of course the hula dancer is a large-ish looking grass-skirt-wearing, ukulelee-playing dude...but with his ukulelle in front of him, you can't really tell its a dude....so she is called affectionately "Pearl". She dances on our dash board...pic to follow. Learning how to drive really boasted my self-esteem, and made my experience dealing with my sick husband, a more bearable thing. I could drive him places when he was feeling tired, and I drove ALOT around Portland Oregon, and back to the coast here. It made me feel so much more the survivor in all this. Thought I would profess the impact of doing powerful out-of-your-comfort-zone moments as great stepping stones to a better self.
