@laurie -- good luck at your race Saturday. I have a 5k on Thursday evening and our forecast is also for warm, humid conditions. However, it will be on the lake which usually helps (lake breeze) and it's not until 7 pm, so at least the sun will be going down.
@kaye -- glad to hear your DH is improving.
@niki -- great idea to track your different food groups. I also need to pay more attention to my macros--I never get enough protein unless I'm being purposeful about it.

@Methynks -- I agree with laurie's advice about your ankle. And, yes, I wholeheartedly agree with you that losing weight is about what you eat more than exercise. I've been trying to outrun my fork for a couple of years now, and have maintained about a 60 lb weight loss that way, but the scale quit moving down. Just recently, I lowered my net calorie allowance and started being more diligent about my food choices. I haven't seen any results yet, but I know it will happen. Good for you for planning to get back to the gym though. Injuries really stink--I'm dealing with a shoulder injury right now, and it sucks not being able to lift weights.
AFM--sorry I was kind of MIA over the weekend. I had that bridal shower Saturday, and then Sunday went to Lamb's Farm with my sister, bil, and niece. We had fun but it took up a good chunk of my day, so didn't get much else done.
Monday Check-in:
Food has been okay. I was up a bit on Saturday due to the shower and a few drinks at the bar that evening. However, today I'm way under, so I think it will even out. Scale had dipped down mid-week, but bounced back up yesterday. Could be due to sodium from party and restaurant foods. We'll see what the week brings.
I had planned to do my monthly 8k today; however, after PT and running errands I had to choose between the gym or yard work, and yard work won. On the plus side, I actually burned more calories than if I'd run the 5 miles.
My DH moved our old dining set out of the spare room and into our dining space, so now I can really get to cleaning out that extra bedroom. If I have time, I would like to paint the room, but we'll see how the cleaning goes. I'm going to put a few items on my Tuesday Goals list now, since it's on my mind.
Tuesday Goals:
1. Clean off 2 book cases (go through books to see if any can be donated, dust, etc.)
2. Clean off work desk
3. Move work desk into other spare room
4. Clean window treatments
5. Paint ????
July Goals:

Hi all, sorry I've been MIA for awhile. DH has settled in to a routine and no more exacerbation so far. He keeps me busy, plus we're trying to get the floor in the bedroom done & he's insisting on doing it himself (with me doing most of the work and following his direction of course). We got the new bed with the bases that lift the head of the bed, but only one of the mattresses (extra long twins) cause we're going to have to move everything out of the bedroom every time we work on the floor. Meanwhile DH is sleeping on the couch.
We're trying to work out how to deal with his new limits. He's frustrated and I'm just trying not to get him too upset and still keep my sanity. Caregiving isn't easy, especially if you have to work full time also. On top of that my weight has plateaued and it's annoying as heck. My food hasn't been bad, only a couple days over my goal, but was getting into the habit of eating my exercise calories & that has to stop if I want to overcome the plateau.
Well typing on a cell phone is a pain so gotta go. Night all!0 -
@Tammy~Sorry to hear about your DHs illness, hope he recovers quickly. Glad you like your trainer so far, I had one for a couple of years and it was really helpful.
@GOINSTD12 (Tracy)~Have you looked into the possibility of having someone to come in and help with DH? You need to give yourself a break every once in a while.
@Karen~You are certainly tackling those projects this summer. I finally got my spare bedroom all cleaned out, painted and put a new bed in there. It feels so good to walk by and see it no longer a “catch-all” room. Of course, right now I’m using it for organizing/packing—I’m slowly tossing things into suitcases. Enjoy your trip to MI.
AFM~Not much to report, the scale is inching downward. Achilles still a thorn in my side but I’m managing, just hope it holds up while on vacation—so much activity planned. I’m definitely counting down to vacation now, just 7 more days of work!

@tracy (goins)-- so glad things are getting into a routine for you and the DH. What kind of floor are you putting in your bedroom?
AFM-- Another fairly productive day. I cleaned off both book cases and found a bunch that could be discarded (very old textbooks --some from my undergrad days! Pretty sure I'll never need my physics text again. LOL). I also dusted all of the knick-knacks that have accumulated on the shelves--think I'll be taking some of those to GW. I have a bunch of those glass oil lamps that used to be popular in the 1990s, but I haven't lit them (or even filled them with oil) in over a decade. I also started sifting through things on the desk, but that still has a ways to go.
Afterward, I met a friend (Garetie, who sometimes pops in here) for shopping and dinner. I found a frame for the commemorative poster I purchased at that cancer benefit concert I attended a couple of months ago--the one with Pete Townshend and Eddie Vedder. The frame is really nice and was only $15 so quite a bargain. Once I have the rooms re-arranged, I will find a place to hang it.
Tomorrow is PT and a late lunch with some friends from work. In between, I will try to get through some more of the desk--even if I clean for "Just 15 minutes."

One of my favorite afternoon snacks is 1/4 of an avocado on Wasa rye crisps ... but have been avoiding eating that because the other 3/4 would turn ugly by the next time i wanted some (like the next day) ... then I saw this tip on America's Test Kitchen ... and IT WORKS! Now I can safely buy that very expensive heart-healthy berry without fear of wasting money and food.
Here's what you do .... Cut the avocado in half. Eat off the half that does not have the pit in it. Take the half that does have the pit in it and place it peel side down on a bed of coarsely chopped onion in an air-tight storage container. Store it in the fridge. It will stay fresh for at least 4 days with no discoloration of the flesh.
Since I usually only eat 1/4 avocado at a time, I nestled the 1/4 back into it's position on the avocado before I stored it. There is no onion taste on the avocado because only the peel actually touches the onion. You don't waste the onion either because it can be used the next time you need onion in your cooking.0 -

Thank you all for your welcome! It really helps having such a friendly bunch to check back in to :-)Methynks-Welcome. When it comes to exercising and rehabbing ankles you have several options. Look on the internet for ankle strengthening and stretching exercises. Talk to your doctor about exercises. When you talk to a Personal trainer ask the questions about rehabbing injuries, if they know there stuff then go for it. Free weights start with the arms-biceps, triceps etc. Then start slowly add leg work. Just make sure you warm up the muscles before you start weight training. How is your ankle doing now, can you walk on it without any pain or swelling? If you use the circuit weight you can start just by lifting the bars with no weight and using one leg at a time. Listen to your body when you are exercise and see how your body responds. You can do core work- at this time as well. Water aerobics is great way to get started since it take the impact off your ankles.
I will definitely ask to see a PT when I am going back to the gym (right now a PT would be killing my budget) and will make sure to mention the rehab work – I used to love doing compound lifting with free weights and definitely want to get back into that. But the majority of those exercised rely on stable footing and I am not sure how much of that work my ankle could take just yet, so I have to take it slowly with that. I still don’t have the full range of movement back compared to my other leg, so that is still something that needs to improve before I can start on lunches and squats again.. Or would those actually help?@Methynks - So good for you to have a plan. One thing that was suggested to me when I joined was to make a list of things I was willing to do, things I was not willing to do and things I may try later. I was willing to cook healthy meals, at the time I was not willing to lift weights or run. Well now I am doing those and more. But the lists made me think about a plan for getting healthy.
Thank you very much, that list is a great idea. I am still re-reading a lot on the forums and keeping focused, but that list is a great idea – I think I already have a rough list in my head of things that I want to do later on, but putting it to pen and paper will definitely help sticking to it – thanks for the idea!

Thank you and congrats on your maintained loss! I am sure your scale will show the loss soon, consistency is key! I hope your shoulder heals soon and that you will be able to enjoy lifting soon – just be careful and don’t start with too much too early, it might prolong the healing process.
Wednesday - Wishes (what do you wish? It can be weight related or not, can be realistic or not):
My wish is for strength to keep it up, to stay in this positive attitude even when the going gets tough, even when I am emotional and down and all in the “what’s the point?” frame of mind. And that this is truly the last time I have to “start” – because it is all a constant improvement which does not only happen on the scales but mainly in my mind. In my attitude. And in the actions that I am taking.

mythynks- lunges may not help unless you do them correctly. Squats could help but don't start by going all the way down gradually work your way down. Sumo squats are also good. Ankle flexibility try writing the alphabet with your foot in lower case in cursive, this helps improve the range of motion and it is fun. Right now, start easy and see what happens, if you have pain when doing it stop and figure out the pain. (position, move, not ready). Ankleing (sp?)( running drill) is also good for flexibility, trick is to move the feet/ankles with a rapid turnover-like watching a baby walk-small step. Might be easier to look it up on on-line. See if your gym offers a free session with a trainer to learn the equipment.
Karen- Good luck with the cleaning and I hope you get it all done. Good luck with your race on Thursday-hope the humidity drops for you by then.

Today, was busy and I am exhausted. Did not sleep well last night due to waking up at 3 and not going back to sleep until after 4:30am then getting up at 6:30. Went to school to meet the new principal and had a 1 hour meeting. I am thrilled that he appears to be a nice guy and wants to know his staff. Was home around 10am, sent a couple of quick emails. Then headed to Cambridge with my brother and niece to have lunch with a cousin. It was nice day but very long and I am wiped out. I know I should go out and exercise or at least take a walk but I just don't feel like it. I will listen to my body and stay home tonight. We arrived home around 5pm. A long day, just goes to show that I need to start adjusting my sleep patterns soon so I can be ready for the school year.
Wish- That everyone who is dealing with family members who are ailing, will recover quickly and reduce the burden on their caretakers.

Wishing that DH could have less pain and sleep better at night. His restlessness also makes it hard for me to sleep.
The lawn mowing went better today. It took less than 2 hours. DH was able to start it for me, and it was a bit cooler, too.

Good morning everyone. Things are tricking right along here in my neck of the woods. The hubby has been to the dr and has a severe case of gastritis. They are running tests to try to find the cause. Could be anything from a viris to an ulcer. Good news is they have put him on Prilosec twice a day and slightly modified his diet and the pain is gone. He will probably be heading back up to work next week sometime. So far with the trainer we have had legs and core day and then yesterday we set up back and biceps. My poor legs are so sore and I look kinda like a little old lady trying to get around but I just keep moving. It isn't the bad I hurt myself kinda pain just the oh my god there are muscles there kinda pain, lol. So far I am enjoying working with him. He is friendly but professional at the same time.
@kaye I hope your hubby continues to improve. Its hard when we try to take care of our loved ones while taking on all of their responsibilities as well.
@Karen you are doing an amazing job on your clean out this summer. I keep telling myself I am going to od this or that but haven't accomplished a whole lot yet.
@kah I am so jealous of your cruise. I bet you have an amazing time. Not sure that is one I will ever get since Dh doesn't seem to think Alaska on a boat is a vacay lol.

Thursday - Truth (got anything you need to fess up to or get off your chest?)
I got a real shocker this morning ... a younger woman who started working in my department right out of college back in about 1982 died unexepectdetly yesterday. At least it was unexpected for those who knew her at work. But my niece, who has worked with her for the past 29 years said she has been ill this past year. She didn't broadcast it however. The photo is of her and her two children from back in 2009. Say a prayer for her and her kids if you can.
As for me, ... I hate to admit it but I am very lazy and unorganized. I keep making plans to clean up my act bu then I don't do it. It seems like the only thing I do pay attention to is my nutrition ... and sometimes I don't pay much attention to that either. Disgusted with myself and my procrastination.
On the bright side, I finally finished off the big recipe of Italian Zucchini that I made over the weekend. That recipe didn't seem to have a lot of vegetables, but in the end it made 11 cups and I figured 2 cup servings would give me all the veggies I needed in a day ... Now that I am out of it, I think I'll make some more as I have enough of everything on hand to do so. Maybe this time I will freeze portions of it ... even though I dislike the texture of these veggies once frozen .... hmmm, we'll see.
Hope everyone had a good week thus far. August starts in just one more day. Are you all thinking about what extra effort you want to do in August? Anyone interested in any challenges?

@tammy-- Thanks! My progress on the cleaning stalled out this week. Too many other appointments and now leaving town tomorrow to visit family. I really need to get back to it when I return. We are having friends over on the 16th for a bbq and I would like to have it done by then. Plus, I start school on the 19th, and once that happens, I won't get anything done around the house.

@kelley-- I thought it was the Alaska trip--then I couldn't remember if that was the last one. And San Francisco too! That will be really nice.
AFM-- I skipped my race tonight. By the time I got back from the ortho I wouldn't have had enough time to get all my laundry done for the trip tomorrow. Plus, the weather was not good--way too hot and humid. I went to the gym instead.
Ortho said to just keep going to PT and see him again in a month. Of course he has no afternoon, evening, or weekend hours, so I will have to take a sick day.

@Karen~Trips are starting run together for me too. You should have seen me last night trying to find SD cards for my camera; I have so many (all in different areas of the house mind you). Of course, none were labeled—that was a project in and of itself so I could open up space on one of them. Wow, almost time for school to start already?! I hope with the continued PT your shoulder continues to improve. Sorry you missed your run. Its hot/humid here too, was 104 yesterday.
@Tammy~LOL I bet the last place your DH wants to vacation is Alaska! He would probably prefer something not associated with the ocean.
@Laurie~I’ve not been sleeping great either lately, this morning I woke up to Zoe biting me on the shoulder—guess she wanted her b’fast!

@Niki~Sorry to hear about the passing of your former co-worker/friend. A good friend of mine at work has been going through aggressive chemotherapy since February for an aggressive recurrence of leukemia, it’s hard to watch him go through this (he is still facing bone marrow transplant).
AFM~Busy weekend ahead. Gym after work today. Hair trim/color followed by pedi tomorrow, hope to get in a short workout between the two. Then plan to swim Sunday morning. Rest of the time will be spent finishing up some housework, organizing and begin packing what I can.0 -

Well I am bummed. I was supposed to grab my nephew and go swimming at the lake this morning but just heard there is an e coli breakout in the water so that's off. My poor sore body was really looking forward to swimming. Now I have to think of something fun/active for us to do that is preferably not outside since it is way to hot here today. Well I hope ya'll have a great Friday. I am sure I will come up with something0

Welcome to this thread Sunflower. I hope we supply the kind of support you are looking for. I can relate to your description of having low self esteem because of your perceived inability to lose the over-weight. Probably every person who shares on this thread has felt the same at some point or other.
I won't go into all the tips and mental exercises you can do to help improve your self-image because there is so much in print about that topic from people far more knowledgeable than I am ... so I hope you avail yourself and try some of the suggestions. There is a MFP blog right here that has some good articles about that topic as well under the "Hello Healthy" topics.
@Skinny/Karen and @Kah/Kelley ... thank you for the condolence on my former coworker's passing. I remember her fondly as one of the first people who I trained as my department at that employer started to grow back in the early 1980's. We worked together in various capacities until I left that company in 2003 and continued to keep in touch through the years since.
AFM ... Friday - Fitness (what are you doing to get fit? How are you preparing for weekend eating?
I wanted to report that my planning a week's menu for last week's goal has made a big difference in how I'm eating. Not all the meals I'd planned were made that week, having continued into this week as I live alone and it takes a while to get through a whole recipe of any food. It's also made a difference in what I've chosen to buy of any prepared meals and my calorie range has been on target thus far. So I'm working on my plans for next week which will become part of my August goals.
Today, for fitness, I am going to scrub all the pots and pans and plastic storage containers and wash the kitchen counters/cupboard faces and floor. My plan for Saturday include making a pot of some sort of veggie soup and I'll be needing to do a lot of veggie prepping.
Speaking of which, my spinal stenosis must have grown a little recently because one new symptom surfaced when I was doing all that cooking ... When I stand in one place for a while ... like at the counter to chop and prep, my feet go numb. The first time it happened the numbness went all the way up to mid-calf on both legs and I couldn't move from side to side because my legs wanted to return to the starting position on their own, and when I tried to step down onto the floor, my foot thought it had reached the bottom while it was still several inches up in the air. Good thing I had the counter to hold on to. I dropped down to the floor and did some of my PT moves and that did the trick.
At first I thought i was having a TIA but it didn't last or come back until a few days later when I was standing at the butcher's counter waiting to be served. If it keeps occurring I'm call my neurologist and schedule an appointment for an evaluation. They wanted to do surgery on my spine a few years back and I decided against it, but I didn't have this kind of symptom at that time.
I guess the lesson in all this is .... keep moving.

Thanks again Laurie! Hehe, I will definitely try writing the alphabet – never thought of that.. someone hand me pen and paper please!! ;-) I will also look up on Ankleing, never heard of that? In general I am fairly confident in knowing the equipment in the gym and the correct form of lunges, squats and the like, have been to the gym a lot when I was at Uni (and on and off ever since), so the usual introduction session or – even worse – the standardised, over cardiofied “lose-weight exercise plan” that they usually set you up with are really not for me. My main concern is just to make sure I won’t overdo things for my ankle and make it worse. But I don’t know of these rehab sessions would be included in a freebie – I will have to ask that as well.
I am looking for some podcasts or articles that tackle the mental side of this weight loss journey, I think I am back up to speed with the physical side of "how to lose" (CICO all the way!) - but I know that I neglected the mental part of the journey before.. any recommendations?
What does AFM stand for? I see you using it a lot, and it bugs me that I can’t figure it out - “as for me”? “and for myself”? “aaaah feed me!!” ;-)

methynks- AFM- As for me. The mental aspect is tricky because everyone is different and deals with it in there own way. There will be ups and downs, little changes in weight that drive you crazy until you realize they are normal. Change does not happen overnight, it takes time and patience. It can be done just tell yourself to take small steps.
Niki- Are you locking your knees when you stand still for long period of time? If so, that could be causing the numbing sensation.
My week became very busy dealing with a Zombie run that I am planning. I am working on getting sponsors for this event and coming up with the plan. In addition, I have been working on finding a good registration sign up website. The run will be fun and it is occurring on Halloween morning. Good thing I am off for the summer otherwise, I am not sure we could pull this off.
Tomorrow, I have a 5K run and it should go well. The humidity is down but the temps will be high. I did a run warm up today and realized that I need to do certain things before the race tomorrow such as strides after a running warm up. I did buy running shorts and a skort so I will see how the skort works tomorrow. I must say buying the running shorts was a lesson in patience and not getting down about how the clothes looks. Running shorts are very short, they should be longer definitely made for pencil thin people. The skort is a 2 in 1- meaning a pair of fitted shorts with the band under the skirt.

A little about me...
I work overnights, so i eat various meals at strange times but i'm finding eating healthy snacks in between meals over the long hours really helps!
I drink 1 gallon of water a day now, its way easier than i thought it would be (:
I have serious social anxiety, i feel like everywhere i go literally everyone is staring at me; weird, huh? I'm really hoping the weight loss will help. So i've been doing indoor exercises and its going great so far!
Right now i'm walking 4-6 miles with a walking video, 5 days a week. My tangible goal is a 5k, any training tips would be wicked helpful!
Looking for friends with similar goals, ages, lifestyles, actually, anybody would be nice (: cant wait to meet everyone!

August 1st. The last few months have been a real struggle in so many ways. They have taken their toll on my weight and my habits. When I started the first time, I jumped right in with both feet, and had a lot of success quite quickly. I've really been trying to get my head around this again, and have come to the conclusion that I am going to have to take baby steps this time. Thus my goals for August are to drink my water and log my daily exercise. I'm off to a good start. I had a good walk early this morning, since there are no water aerobics on the weekend. We are in for a few more really hot days, so I will walk early tomorrow, too. Thanks for being here to keep me accountable.
I'm worried about DH. He is still in lots of pain. His ribs are so sore that he has started sleeping in the recliner. He's been complaining about his legs for the last couple of days. He's having some tingling, limps a lot, and has stumbled nearly falling a couple of times. We have an appointment with his dr on Tuesday. I hope he's okay until then.

I wrote a really terrific grandma talking at you type of message to you @colleen_mairead_xo and then dropped the entire note, must have been that good angel on my shoulder who made me lose the scold I was giving you about feeling like everyone is looking at you .... most likely they are not and if they are looking in your direction they are probably just staring right past you! Good luck, I hope you find the friends you are looking for on here.
So sorry for all the troubles @grandmakaye44 ... This is the time when you need to lighten up on yourself a bit since you are having such a load to carry. Sending prayers for serenity and strength your way. Good goals for August!

@Lauriek70 ...thanks for the suggestion. I checked and I don't think I;m locking my knees. The very low part of my back has been feeling pressure and tension, probably from too much sitting on my lumpy couch. I have to get back in the habit of doing my PT maneuvers again on a regular daily basis. When I was really good about it, I did them 3 times a day, now I rarely remember to do any for even 10 minutes ...
My August Goals, once again, are to cook my own meals most of the time, drink sufficient water and within 100 of my calorie goal every day, and work on getting my house and grounds to a much better condition than they are currently in ... which is why I need to reinforce that computer time limit that I set previously. I've made up a plan for the first week that is pretty much a To-Do List and am crossing off the things that I've done. I figure if I have a plan to follow, then even if I don't accomplish every item each day I'll still be farther along than I would be if I just coasted along.
Another thing I have to work on is that I need to break a habit that started after I retired. That is, I go on the computer in the morning with my breakfast coffee and then when I'm ready to start doing my chores I'm already tired. So I need to get in the habit of starting my chores first and going to computer later in the day. That one is the biggie!

August already, What do we want to do for our challenge this month? A challenge can either be a group thing or individually based. This is optional for participation.
My run went well this morning and I finished the 5K in 38:57. The temp was 80 and the humidity was increasing. So I am happy with my time and pace. Based on the weather conditions, my time was expected based on the condition. The heat and humidity slow you down and there is a calculator that shows you the projected times based on the temperature.
I did buy a running skort yesterday but was disappointed with it today. They rode up like crazy, I actually had to stop and pull them down. It was that annoying I will try it again but I am not sure that will help. The next run might be done in tri-shorts instead since they did not ride up last month.
Kaye- I hope your DH is feeling better and the doctors can figure out what is happening.
Nikki- if you have too make a list of the daily chores and only allow yourself to go to the computer after you have completed x amount of chores.
Colleen- Welcome. Training tips for a 5K is your goal to walk it or run? That will influence your training. Walking is a great start.

Hi all, the names Priscilla. Married mother of 3 girls. 2 teens and one tween. I work in a small family practice and see the affects of obesity on a person everyday, I have yoyo'ed for years. Constantly struggling with my weight, losing each time I diet only to get complacent again and regain what I lost and then some. I don't want to end up DMII, heart disease, arthritis, and other preventable diseases. I want to loose weight to feel better physically and mentally, I want to be healthy for my kids, I want to look good for my husband. Any way that's pretty much my story in a nut shell. It's nice to have a forum like this to come to for support, I know I will sure need it along the way!!!

Oops. I really did intend to post last week, but got distracted. I'm still dealing with some depression; not as bad as in June, but enough to make an impact. Rededicating myself to self-care this month to get back on track, and accountability is part of the plan!
Weekly Goals: August 3-9*
*I'm going to Vegas this weekend, so making some accommodations.
Diet- Eat at least one serving of a non-starchy vegetable every day
- Drink 96oz of H2O daily
- Prepare at least one meal from scratch
(Can you tell I'm still really struggling with food choices?)
Fitness- Daily yoga - 1/7
- At least 3 cardio sessions - x/3
Personal/Home- Miracle Morning - 1/7 (currently on Day 211!!!)
- Pack for Vegas
- Wrap Elizabeth's birthday presents
- Finish decluttering/rearranging bedroom
- Take old desk to nieces (need to borrow Dad's truck)

Work- Finalize/approve first issue of magazine (guess what? I'm editing a magazine!)

Hi all ... Monday Check-in
I dropped 2 pounds earlier in July and have maintained that loss through this mornings weigh-in. Since my calorie intake as at my resting BMR, I know that the thing I need to do to drop more is to be more active.
The July goals had a mixed-bag result ...
80 ounces of water a day ...I get a "A" in this one
30 minutes of outside activity daily for 5 days ... This one is an "F"
prepare my meals instead of ordering/eating out ... An "A-" for this
limit computer time to less than 4 hours a day ... Tried hard, but really, I only get a "C" here.
Sleep in bed, not on the couch ... Another "A".
housework for at least 2 hours daily for 5 days ...This needs more effort, I get a "D" here.
For August the goals have added a "TO-DO" list aspect.
. . . Plan my menu and Cook my meals.
. . . Drink sufficient water every day (64-80 oz a day)
. . . Get the house clean and organized with the major late summer tasks completed
. . . Keep computer time down to under 4 hours a day
. . . Do Yoga PT moves for spine and knees.
Looking forward to reading everyones updates on how they are coming along with their weight loss/maintenance journey and also "what's new with you" updates.

Welcome to the newlings.
Not much to report here, the weekend was busy with hair cut/color and pedi plus some running around. Its month-end at work, so have that to get done plus other projects that must be done before leaving on vacation Friday. Its super hot here, so definitely looking forward to the cooler temps in Alaska.
