What nobody tells you about losing weight

That finding clothes is actually harder because you are not used to shopping for real clothes..does this look right?....Is it supposed to be skinnier at the bottom??? ....everything fits but you are more picky because of it.4

Definitely more picky. I used to buy clothes if they fit well, not caring much how they looked within reason. Now, I'm taking pictures in the dressing room to make sure it looks good from all angles, because I can't tell. Sometimes I just get brain freeze during a shopping trip and end up leaving without buying anything. It all fits now and I have to decide if I like a certain style, if it looks good..... It was kind of easier before, but I wouldn't trade it for anything.
It just makes me laugh when I fit into something in a size I never thought I'd wear again. The people in adjacent fitting rooms must think I'm crazy, laughing out loud!2 -

The first time I tried on something that I thought was going to be way too small and it fit I know for a fact people thought I was nuts. When it happened I literally danced out of the changing room to look in the bigger surrounding mirrors. There was a crowd. They looked shocked and then laughed. I didn't even care because I was in such a good mood when it happened.

This summer, to my utmost surprise, the pit in my stomach was completely gone. I actually enjoyed myself and I couldn't believe how different every ride felt. It's basic physics I guess, the acceleration of a 260lb body is so much higher than the one of a 180lb body this is one change I never anticipated. I celebrated by going on the water slide tube at least 30 times
Ooh that's fantastic!!!! I'm heading to wet and wild with the kids in the September holidays. I'm so excited1 -

I am also more picky, but don't know. I was shopping this weekend and had three dresses, I took pictures and sent them to my friends. But I also like looking at the picture instead of the mirror. For some reason I see myself differently in the pictures. Usually better, but this weekend, one of the dresses looked worse in the pictures. It was just weird.
When I first lost a lot of weight and finally got out of plus size, I had lots of trouble shopping. There were way too many options that I got overwhelmed. I ended up taking a friend with me and she helped me out. That was the best thing I did. I just went in the dressing rooms at stores and she brought me things to try on. It made me stop gravitating towards the exact same clothes.3 -

Much more fun than me. I went to the mall in January to try on real clothes not from a "big girl" catalogue but from regular department stores. Got really overwhelmed with the amount of choices and not having a clue as to what size I was (my clothes were usually all xl or xxl, no numbers). Finally ended up in The Gap with a pair of jeans. A 12 fit, the last number I remember was a 24. I got all teary eyed. Hoped no one was nearby. I need to go again, but need a definite plan of attack so I don't lose my $8&% again. I think no matter what size, I'm always going to prefer the online shopping approach.

Alidecker and others are right on. Take a friend who can bring you clothes without coming out of the changing room. That way, you can talk through it, understand your new size, and start celebrating instead!3 -
I'm enjoying hearing everyone's responses. I'm just 52 years young (menopausal) and totally lack motivation! Until a few years ago, I excercised at least 3-4 times a week and did that all of my adult life. Now I find it hard just getting out of bed! When I do get out and excercise, I'll power walk/jog 4-5 miles which is great but I'm not consistent. I need to lose 50-60lbs. I wish you could all give me some of your motivation!4

No but I know his name and now he knows where my office is located.0 -
Carol Davison has DROPPY DRAWERS! and had to pack up her old jeans in the donate box and go shopping for smaller clothing in her closet! HORRAY! Taking them to the donation place and before I go I will look to the heavens, shake my fist and say in my best Scarlet O'Hara voice "With God as my witness I will never be chubby again!"
Packed the smaller clothing in size labeled boxes to ensure that I got a chance to wear them as I work my way through to smaller sizes.13 -
No one told me how much my head would shrink. Not just your face, but your whole head. My glasses constantly fall off where before they'd sometimes feel too tight on my face, and I have to retract the sides of my big overear headphones almost all the way up now.5

I have only lost about 15 pounds so far so maybe someone of these are only true for me:
- you will still have cravings for the unhealthy foods you used to eat like chips and pizza... I am still waiting for the day when I don't think Cheetos are delicious
- when your sister or other close people don't comment on your weight loss you start to question if you even look any different than before
- weight loss can start to consume so many of your thoughts to where I sometimes questions if it is healthy to think about it so much
- but overall how much your confidence will increase and make you wonder why you waited so long to do this7 -
-
How after a few weeks your hunger and cravings simply vanish. I can barely eat a whole meal now that I'm able to distinguish between actually hungry and satiated/full.4

This is so true!!! I have a few close friends who have said nothing about my weight loss I know they are there for me but just haven't commented on it.1 -

It's an interesting quirk of human psychology among the overweight, I guess, that everyone is so fixated on loose skin. Why is it that folks at the beginning of their weight loss journey worry about this? I'm not exempt, I did all kinds of research on the subject too, asked a bunch of questions, and thought about it way too much. Now that I've lost 100+ I can honestly say that I couldn't possibly care less about loose skin! Yes, I have some, maybe a lot. Who cares! I feel and look so much better, loose skin doesn't matter. At. All.11 -

if losing 50lbs gained 5 inches, there'd be 0 overweight men in the world
2nd that.. I've heard some people gain a bit in that department, but never noticed much change personally.
On a lighter note - does anyone else find irony in the person's username and the post provided?
Down 160lbs I think I'd be frightened if that were true. However...I won't say there isn't a noticeable change
Coming up on losing 100lbs myself...when do I get my 10" extension?
Get in line, buddy, I got a 13" extension coming soon -- my wife is already crying and packing for her mom's.5 -
I never realised how much each small victory would mean to me, but as I become fitter and lose more weight, those victories become harder to achieve and considered a victory even for 'normal' people.
I read the nsv thread and miss the days when it was a victory going from 30seconds running to a whole minute. Now I'm fighting to break a 10minute mile and feel like I'm progressing towards it at a snails pace. My memory has tricked me into thinking the past 60lb lost was simple compared to the next 30 I need to lose.
So now I look for different victories and I can't decide on my next goal!

How awesome it feels to tuck in your shirt and you are flat!!7

That you might receive wanted and unwanted comments about your loss and ultimately it's up to you to decide how you want your body to look.

I find that I'm not trying to run out of the camera's way quite as much. Also since losing weight in my face, my resting b*tch face appears to be less severe now, which I think is making me more approachable.6

"resting b*tch face" I love it. I too have an unapproachable look on my resting face. I just never knew how to phrase it. now I know

People in general, especially men, treat you much better. I went home to visit my parents one weekend and saw an old highschool crush at church. In school he always acted snobby and standoffish to me and like he couldn't be bothered to speak to me. And he would pretend he didn't know me or my family in church for a good 7 years. When I saw him at the service he literally tripped and fell over a pew trying to come over and talk to me. My dad had a good laugh when he asked me to grab dinner and catch up.
Also you discover new bones. Asked my doctor about a bulge near my side fearing that it was some kind of cyst or tumor. He laughed and told me it was my hip bone. So embarrassing.8 -

Several years ago my friend lost a lot of weight (100-ish lbs), and long story short, we bumped into her old crush - the guy who, after finding out she liked him, laughed and said "never in her lifetime," and then proceeded to hook-up with her cousin - who practicaly fell over himself to get her to go out with him. She turned him down, obviously, and when we got back at hers she started to cry because it reminded her of how terribly she was treated by everyone when she was fat. It was awful.
Another thing: for a long time after she lost the weight (I'm talking *years*) she'd always check herself out in reflective surfaces and ask me if she looked fat, and when I told her no, would ask if I was being honest. After a while it really started to irritate me because she obviously wasn't. I thought she was just fishing for compliments. Now, after reading this thread, I realize that she probably genuinely felt she still looked fat because her mind hadn't quite caught up with her appearance.14 -

Yeah, like if your skin is going to be loose, you won't loose weight?! I like being alive so I will discipline myself down to a healthy body fat.1 -
