@Elise4270 - That's a great way to look at it. I think sometimes I feel pressure to get my 10k training runs in even if I'm in pain because I don't want to fall "behind". Ridiculous, I know, seeing as if I injure myself I'll be way worse off. I'll try to keep to 5-6 miles once a week and see how I feel with that. Thank you so much - I'm happy to know I'm not alone in this!

@JoRocka - Thank you! I think that's exactly what I need to do. I was so surprised that the immediate response was "stop running and find something else." Not to mention how discouraging it was since I love running. Would you recommend seeing at PT? I went to my general practitioner first - maybe it's time to start physical therapy?

Thank you all for the support!!
PT wouldn't hurt. I've learned a lot and sorry I didn't push for it earlier. I saw a doc that told me to bike, so I laid off running to bike. Turns out that was a bad idea. So, FIX it (like @JoRocka said).
Sorry I'm chatty todat- waiting at dealership for auto repairs...

I can't honestly answer that question for you.

Generally if I have a pain issue- I go see the GP first- mostly b/c they then prescribe PT for me- but I was able to find a PT that doesn't need a referrel- because- honestly the issue I"m dealing with right now is not something a GP would be able to do anything about. (i have a crooked squat) so I'm able to handle chiro/pt at the same time without visiting the GP.

If it's pain pain- go see the GP and talk through it- ultimately you're probably going to wind up going to a PT. So- if you can skip a GP (assuming no stabbing pain) and go to a PT might save you some money- but honestly with general tightness and discomfort sounds like yoga and foam rolling might fix the problem.

@Somebody_Loved I agreed with @ddmom0811. New doc. When I started out I couldn't follow a program. I had to "run" by time and gradually add. I'd repeat weeks until I was comfortable moving to the next. You have some respectable mileage going on. Maybe cut a few days to 2.5 miles and have a long 5-6+ miles run once a week. Pain is a warning to back off. It takes me a good 2 miles to get in the groove. They are my warm up miles. I know they'll suck, so I don't fret over it. Run by feel, not a program.

    Happy running!

We call these cutback (or down) weeks. That is the biggest lesson I learned recently. Plan about 1 week each month where you will run about 20% less mileage to absorb the training. If your body says you need one sooner or longer than a week, I highly advise you to listen to your body. This past spring I screwed up my 10 miler race and like 4 weeks of training because I refused to take a down week after increasing mileage for like 6 weeks. I paid for it. Something I won't do again.

Kody & I put in 8.5 miles last night. I started out doing somewhat of an interval training. After warming up for a while I ran at my hopeful HM pace for a bit, then back down. During my third time doing HM pace, Kody started getting further and further behind. Perhaps our recent spell of no running had caught up with him, or perhaps he doesn't like running at that pace. In any event, I decided to walk a quarter of a mile to let him rest a bit. Upon starting again, I had a heck of a time getting myself back in the groove and didn't enjoy the last few miles. Tonight I'll try the same route, doing more HM pace intervals, but without Kody.

I don't know if it's related or not but I also decided it was time to (mostly) retire my Brooks Glycerin shoes. They were feeling pretty flat last night and I was feeling in my knees and hips. I put them up and may try them again for shorter distances, or perhaps as my slush running shoes this winter. In their place I broke out a new pair of the same model. I looked over my mileage on my ASICS Gel-Nimbus and see that they're already at 211 miles. Hopefully those last longer than my Glycerins.

@JoRocka - PT is what I was thinking as I don't need a referral from a GP. I think I'll do the down week (thank you, @Stoshew71 for the explanation - I'm learning so much), add in some yoga and keep foam rolling and see how I feel. Hopefully that will do the trick!

I would say maybe a sports orthopedic?
Someone who knows about running and runners and running related injuries.
Do you have a running specialty store? Or a running group that is local?
They usually know someone who is good.

This guy seems has been recommended by a lot in my running community and they even do free seminars at least once a month at the local Fleet Feet. https://www.facebook.com/physioworkshsv

There should be someone similar near you.

The other day my doctor told me to stop running and find some other form of exercise since "running is bad for the body."

    yes- someone sports oriented.

(I forget since I"m seeing a sports therapist- but it's sports therapy 'lite'- I wish they were a little more in the sports department) but it's EXTREMELY convenient and economic and they mostly get it so works for me.

So yeah- definitely someone who is sports oriented.

@Stoshew71 @JoRocka - Just looked around online and looks like there is a sports rehab therapy center by my place. They specialize in "sports and accident rehab" and "improving your exercise regime" - I'll check them out and report back!

Time to find a new doctor. As I shared with someone else on here a couple of days ago. There are some doctors that are just so misinformed and are anti-running for some reason. There is absolutely no evidence that running is bad for you. In fact, just the opposite is found to be true.

Go to your local running store or if you have a local running group and ask for suggestions for a new doctor. @skippygirlsmom shared her experience just yesterday I think. The first doctor she went to wanted to do some surgery on her and told her she shouldn't run again. She found another good doctor at the advice of lots of runners and found one that was a runner himself. Had her do a bunch of exercises and within a couple of weeks she was back out running again pain free.

Exactly! I went to many sports physiotherapists who put me in the too hard basket.. They put inserts in my shoes, convinced me to buy shoes that were very wrong for my feet (arches too high or not enough support).. I've been told my legs are bowed and that's why I can't run.. That I am pigeon toed so my feet just aren't made for running.. That one leg is longer than the other.. I've even been sent to a specialist who told me that it may just be shin splints or I may have compartment syndrome and I either stop trying to run or I can have a pressure test done .. where they have you run on a treadmill and insert a needle into your leg to measure compartment pressure... So I gave up!

A friend couldn't believe how much I had gone through just to 'try' and run pain-free. She got me onto a sports physio who specializes in running injuries and straight away he told me yes, my legs look a little funny  BUT it wouldn't stop me from running. I was overstriding, my calves were weak, leg muscles were imbalanced and with a bit of strength, I should be fine! He couldn't believe the trouble I had been through over the years and he said he sees it all the time.. People come to him complaining about all the physio's they have seen, Dr's and specialists who want to operate or do procedures when it is something so easy to fix!

I was only able to run 2-3km (in agony) max when I started seeing this physio.. Weeks later, after slowing my pace right down too - I am running anywhere between 5-10km each run

@Somebody_Loved Sorry for the big story but I'm just so happy that I found someone who knew what to do and helped me. I hope you find a great doctor who understands and is happy to help too!

Skip had a meet yesterday, it was a 3 mile distance. She not only PR'd with a time of 20:37, she also set a new school record for the distance. I'm so proud of her and so excited for her I can hardly stand it! I also spent the day volunteering at Special Olympics, I volunteer at 2 meets a year and if you have never been to an event or volunteered at one you should. These athletes are so inspiring it just warms my heart every time. One of our athletes Neal was the only to run the mile and finished it in (are you ready?) 9:38!!!! So proud of him!

Congratulations to Skip and to Neal!

@ACSL3 - were you stationed in San Diego last year? This will be my third time to run the Holiday Half there.

Yes I was - ended up out in Japan last Feb, but before that I was in San Diego. Last year was the second year they did that race, so that means you've been doing it since they started it right? That's pretty neat! I really enjoyed the race. I made the huge mistake of being excited about it being lots of downhills and pushed too hard in the beginning and ended up walking towards the end. But it was still a great race and I learned a valuable lesson ;)

Finally got myself out running yesterday afternoon after a week off for some reasons. Felt good to get back out there  This will be a light month for me, but that's okay.

I'm planning a trip back home - first to my Grandmother's house for Thanksgiving, then to my parents house for a couple weeks of rest. I was thinking yesterday and decided to look to see if there are some races in the area while I'm there. Found what looks to be a good race in the middle of Dec, so I talked to my parents about it. We're all going to sign up for a race - me for the half, my dad for the 10k, and my mom for the 5k :)

@Somebody_Loved - I agree with what the others have said too. I see a sports chiro and he has been wonderful found through another runner's recommendation. I also have a sports ortho doctor who interestingly doesn't believe in surgery except as a very last resort. My GP also told me I shouldn't be running 'at my age' but when I went to see her for my last check up she had started running at her daughters insistence and was asking me all kinds of questions. Note she is the same age as me :) Another convert is born! :)

@skippygirlsmom - I still read it again and will comment again - I think Skip is absolutely amazing! Congratulations!! Also to Neil - what a fantastic accomplishment!

@ACSL3 - yes I ran the inaugural Holiday Half. It was the first race I ran by myself with no friends or anyone there with me. I would like to keep doing it - I think they are planning to give out jackets on the 5th race if you have done all 5... We'll see if I can manage that! I think it is awesome that your entire family will be running in December - that will be so much fun!

No run for me today. I was exhausted this morning and got up and turned off the alarm. Traveling makes me so tired. I will get up and run tomorrow since I have class and then will be on a plane for 3 hours. I was SO hoping to get to meet up with @Elise4270 but the class ended up going way too late. Hopefully I will get back to Dallas soon with more time to visit.

@ddmom0811 - Florida weather has been awesome the past 2 weeks. Had an evening run a few days back where it got all the way down to 68 degrees w. light wind and humidity of 70%... pure bliss! Otherwise runs after dark the past 2 nights were back in the mid 70s w. 80% humidity, but I'll take that over the August/September heat.

I'm doing my final snowbird trip north (Pittsburgh) this weekend, where I'll run with my Sunday AM crew, but definitely glad it is getting cooler here I have a ton of long runs & speedwork on my running plan for the next 2.5 months leading up to the Disney marathon in January, and I'd like to ramp up my weekly mileage to 60/week by December.

    10/1 - 7 miles
    10/2 - 8.5 miles
10/3 - 4 miles (pace run at 1/2 marathon speed)
    10/4 - 9 miles
    10/5 - 8.5 miles
    10/6 - 8.5 miles
    10/7 - 8 miles
    10/8 - 8 miles (w. 0.25-0.5-0.75-1-0.75-0.5-0.25 pyramid @ 6:35 pace)
    10/9 - 9 miles
    10/10 - 4 miles
    10/11 - 8 miles
    10/12 - 7 miles

    10/20 - 10 miles (3 w. neighbor, 7 w 3-2 mile fast repeats)
    10/21 - 6 miles

So, I finally managed to shift my cold so I am decidedly less grumpy (did you know man flu is an actual thing?)

I am on the "Balanced Phase" of the My Asics plan thingymawhatsit. This apparently mixes the majority of easy runs with some faster paced efforts. I had a "Pace" run last night. The idea was to run the entire 12km at a steady but challenging pace. I was a bit nervous going into it as while I have run 8km at the designated pace 12km was unknown territory. On a brighter note I wasn't hungover like my last run (no laughing at the back of the class, thank you) so go me!

The run went well. I kept the average pace for most of the run except for another ruddy great hill which seemed to spring out of nowhere at the 6km mark. It is the kind of hill I hate when cycling as it is not a short, steep effort which you can power through and then it's over but one which goes on...and on...and when you think it is over...goes on some more. This makes even the shortest incline you face thereafter feel like scaling the North Face of Everest.

I swear these hills are stalking me as they appear out of nowhere, always around the 5 - 6km mark no matter what route I take. It's like the film "Single White Female". Except with hills. So nothing like SWF then I guess...

Happy running all you good, good people. Keep up the good work ;)

10/15: 8 miles (am), 3.4 miles (pm) with the Thursday crew
10/16: 2 miles to shake off the drove-for-3.5-hours feeling
    10/17: 13.1 miles - Baltimore Half Marathon (1:44:24)
    10/18: Rest/Lazy Day
    10/19: 5 miles
10/20: XT: 15 miles indoor bike (aka: 1 episode of Blindspot)
10/21: 7.7 miles speedwork (2ish mile warm up, 3.5 miles speedwork, 2ish mile cooldown)
    10/22: 5.2 miles (am)

Had 10 on the schedule for this morning, but it just wasn't working for me. Legs felt ok, but I ate way too much last night and feel gross today. Hamstring felt ok, thank goodness, but not sure the cold was helping much. It's going to be in the 70s today, so I'm hoping some warmer temperatures will yield better results this afternoon, and I can get 5 miles in before my usual 6 mile group run. Really on a mental struggle bus this week, so maybe a social run this evening can snap me out of it ::fingers crossed::

But group question: Anyone ever get random weak feelings in their legs? Sometimes when I'm running, I'll get a moment when I land on my left leg, and it feels like something on the side of my shin, between my ankle and mid-shin, isn't firing. I almost tripped once because of it, but it hasn't been that bad since. It'll happen for 1-3 steps, and go away for a while, and come back, usually off-and-on for a couple miles, but it never lasts a whole run. Do I just need to stretch better? Deal with it? Is it something to be concerned about? Does this description even make sense? ;)

@elise4270 I know I book marked the headbands you told me about what was it again I can't find it. @7lenny7 was looking for it too.

I'm really hating the mobile update to mfp. On the community, I can not see what I'm writing..

    Had to vent...

It's fit chick. I saw they had some really sweet one's.

@Somebody_Loved - ugh! I am sorry you've had to go through all that! You too, @kareF! Knocking on wood here that I can avoid nagging problems...I am a big baby when it comes to pain.
@kristinegift - too much of a party with your uncle? I hate that food hangover feeling...I don't run well with much, if anything, in my gut. Good job listening to your body!
@shanaber - I know several runners nearly 20 years your senior that run regularly...no worries. Way to convert the doctor!

10/1 - 3.1 miles on the 'mill; plus 5.8 miles / 20 minutes on stationary bike.
10/2 - Had to skip run/workout for a life insurance physical (bloodwork, etc.). Then, they couldn't get me to bleed, so I'm gonna have to do it again! Grrr!
10/3 - 11.5 miles with HM group; cool, beautiful weather!
    10/4 - waaaayy overslept!
10/5 - not off to a good start this month; kids up half the night with illness / asthma issues
    10/6 - 4.75 miles on a beautiful, cool morning.
10/7 - 4.85 miles of hills with HM group
    10/8 - 4.65 miles
10/9 - 0. Up half the night, again! Now feeling a bit under the weather. It's too early for this stuff, isn't it?
10/10 - 7.92 miles with HM group. Cool morning, flat loop...nice run!
10/11 - 3.15 mile "recovery" run. Slower pace with one of my 9 year olds...love getting to run with my kids! Sore hip though.
10/12 - 4.75 miles. Beautiful weather! Hip better, but not perfect. Fired up for 5k and HM this weekend!
10/13 - 0. Had my repeat life insurance physical, which went fine. Then spent the whole day waiting at home for Des Moines Water Works to turn water back on. Some sort of miscommunication between dispatch and the technician...UGH!!
10/14 - 5.16 relaxing, lovely miles with HM group as we "taper" for this weekend. Got pulled over on the way to meet them at 4:45 a.m. Just a warning...woo hoo!
10/15 - 4.25 miles on treadmill at Trek class. Took it a little slower and flatter than usual.
    10/16 - rest day before weekend race(s)
10/17 - 2.96 miles @ IMT 5k Road Race - someone shortened the course! Oops!
10/18 - 13.1 miles @ IMT Des Moines Half Marathon (1:48:41). New PR! Went out a little fast, but mostly had a great run on a beautiful day!
10/19 - extended stretching with HM group. Relaxing.
10/20 - 4 miles on indoor track with weights/strength work following.
10/21 - 4.75 miles around my 'hood. For October, it was hot...beautiful!
10/22 - 4.25 miles on treadmill at Trek class
