Speaking of pants and how they fit, apparently women's pants are not currently made for someone with a 10" difference between hips and waist. Anything I find that fits my hips gaps at the waist by several inches. I wish I knew what the manufacturers were using as standards.
I have always had this peoblem. Even at 200lbs I had a 12 inch hip to waist difference. I found the brand amethyst and ariya are made just for this problem.0 -
I love this thread. So MANY positives - hate to call out the struggles - but here you go:
- The constant fear that you will revert back to the old habits
- The resentment that people DO treat you better when you are healthier - and trying to prove that its not just you who has changed.
- The many things you missed out on because of your weight
Happiness wins though:
- The "shopping"for new clothes that had been buried in the back of your closet for years.
- The ability to ride a roller coaster again without fearing the strap will break and you will plummet to your death
- Less heartburn
- More energy
- Pretty underwear and bras
- Wearing non-maternity jeans for the first time in 5 years
- Saving money due to less eating out, less drinking, less junk food
- Getting really creative with salads
- Not getting winded going up stairs
- Posing in FRONT of the camera again
- Shaping your daughter's perception of herself - not to be skinny, but to be healthy
- Believing in yourself - all of yourself - again10 -
At the time I was happy I got to renew my drivers license with my old photo. I thought it would be a good conversation starter. It was...years and years of the same conversation. You might not believe it, but telling people your weight loss story can get old. I did leave my wallet on the counter at a restaurant once. The worker could not find me using my photo so she just called out my name. When I responded the look on her face was priceless.5

- All my rings are too big. And not just mine but my late mum's (and nan's) as well, which makes me a little sad. I don't want to have them resized because some are quite fragile and they remind me of my mum's hands, but I wish I could wear them at times.
- lying on my side my knees touching is very uncomfortable. Who'd have thought I'd ever have knobbly knees!
- Sitting on hard surfaces. Ouch.
- Went down a shoe size. That was weird.
- My bf likes picking me up and the first time I was like ''noooo you'll break your back!'' but he didn't of course as I was a lot lighter irl than I was in my mind. I've lost more weight since then and he still likes picking me up and I still have that initial reaction.
- I clasp my hands all the time because my hands/fingers are so much thinner. I probably look like an evil genius/like I'm praying all the time but it just feels so funny!
I recently noticed me clapping my hands and rubbing them, especially at excited moments. Then I catch myself and I'm aware of what I'm doing...and I think to myself that I look like an evil villain coming up with an evil plan!

I've lost 50 pounds in 10 months by seriously calorie counting and kicking up workouts to now jogging 3 miles a couple time of week. I have 20 pounds to go (actually my second new goal) being when I started I never imaged the 50 coming off which was my first goal/ ACCOMPLISHED. I've had a lot of people at work not say anything to me as if they are afraid to say anything. Others saying don't get to thin. Then I have heard through the rumor mill, "she must have had surgery" as if it is not possible to do with hard work. Ignoring this one.
One of the top things that got my head into keeping with it after the first week or so of "not much happening" (to get back to the weight I use to be before past breakup and quitting smoking) was when I started to date again where someone was seeing me naked! A great motivation with the right person supporting you.
Like others buying new clothing was extremely frustrating when going back into Missy sizes and not knowing where to start (so many more options/choices: I kept feeling overwhelmed at any store) as well as not knowing what size I was. Even my bras don't fit anymore. On top of it, clothes I bought 2-3 months ago are swimming on me and now you have to go buy more. Good and bad wrapped together.
I totally relate to the comfort issues when sleeping also, being a side sleeper my knees together was bothersome without the extra fat.
Confidence is building as I know deep down I really look good but the fat image still resonates its head and I do sometimes find I'm complaining about flabby parts due to the weight loss. It will work it way out in the end is what I keep reminding itself.
Stay positive and feel good about yourself!

My energy levels are through the ROOF most of the time...On two separate occasions, a friend of mine was like "are you okay" when I came running into class giving off amped up energy..Do you drink Red Bulls another asked... lol Nope, just AMPEd and looking Forward to class as usual!! Exercise is my "energy drink", I haven't needed anything else. :-)

Telling the weight loss story does get old sometimes, especially when my one friend likes to tell everyone and ask me to show them my before and after picture. I know she does it because she is proud of me, but it doesn't define me. Everyone I meet now does not need to know everything about me.
Then there are times that I enjoy talking about it, when I feel someone is truly interest because they are trying to change their life.3 -
Holy crap... I thought the first time I ran a non-stop mile was a pretty good high.
Then I ran (with no slow-downs) my first 5k this week. I was on a high for a few hours from that!15 -

So much this. I was freezing the other day and couldn't believe it was only 75.

I'm having issues being uncomfortable sitting. Since I've lost 77 pounds for some reason my butt irritates me. I don't know how to explain it.

The way your goals change - from just wanting to lose enough to get in an acceptable range, to wanting what left of you to look fit and not soft, to wanting to see if you can squat more than your body weight or run a half marathon. Just 'cause.
One thing I'm not thrilled about is how lean my arms have gotten. If I'm cold, you can't really tell, but if I'm warm at all, the veins start a-poppin'. When I do upper body lifts, they look like an anatomy drawing of the vascular system.
And when you've maintained your success for a while ... having the people that spouted the popular diet nonsense at you come back and ask for advice. Taking you seriously this time.
As for the second one (veins) just so you know - some people find it really, really, REALLY sexy Let's take me for an example2 -

I'm currently sitting on a pillow on my computer chair. Less shifting that way. And being able to actually feel my tailbone weirds me out. I always knew it was there, but it took 51 years to get acquainted with it.1 -
No one tells you that hats that did not fit before will fit now. I ain't makin this ish up!! Apparently I carried weight from the top of my head to the tips of my toes!3

The satisfaction I get when I go to the store and can fit in regular clothes. Size 16P but it's more normal than size 24 close when nothing fits and have to go to speciality stores.3

Friends are negative sometimes when you turn down something. For instance, my friend asked if I wanted some chocolate, I said no thanks. Her reply: What, you wanna be a stick?
I have a stone to lose....
I hate that when I look at old photos that I allowed myself to put on that weight and be so unhealthy.:/
I avoided looking at photos around then as I didn't want to see myself like that.I have photos on cds for about a year not developed!
On a positive:)
Shoe size gone down again.
Back interested in clothes and how I look.
Always notice guys and gals treat you different when you are smaller in size.
I enjoy running now.
I have become on those those women that go to do their shopping in work out gear:))

For me the main thing nobody told me about losing weight (not that I actually asked ) was, like so many mentioned before me, being cold all the time. I acctually like that. I love the fact that I can wear cute, thick sweaters and wrap myself in blanket at home. More than that - I love not being sweaty all the time in summer with these huge, wet marks on my t-shirt. Plus I don't mind it because it doesn't mean I'm getting sick or cold more often. On contrary my immunity is better cause I'm healthier.
Next thing (and this one is the worst) is how people will react to you. Some with hate, some with hostile and some even with verbal assault. In this all the most hurtful for me was my mothers reaction - telling me all the time I'm too thin (even when I was still overweight and had to motivate myself thru my mother's comments) and that I look sick and ugly on my face (appearently I have wrinkles around my mouth at age of 25 which I don't see).
On the other hand all great reactions from other people like these huge astonishment on this lady's face when she measureged my waist and could understand how can I wear size M with just 65cm waist (I'm tall so size S has too short sleaves).
Jewelery doesn't fit anymore (bracelets, rings, watches).
Normal chairs starts to actually gives you spare room so you can almost sit in them with someone next to you.
Everything seems bigger.
Shoping for cothes starts to be barable and even enjoyable cause most of the things you try on fits.
The biggest one - you start to love yourself just the way you are. You start to see youself as individual whos maybe not perfect but in some ways lovely and cute.
You stop to mind when someone is looking at you (because you don't instantly think he/she's judging you).
You start to feel that you control your own life.
Enjoying food rather than absorb it thoughtlessly.
Being joyful and happy most of the time.
*kitten* pain every time you sit on something that is not super soft longer than and hour.
And so on, so on...7 -

Seemingly the most popular entry: Not being the warmest one in the room anymore. My poor, poor wife, who used to use me as a warming brick at night. Winter is not going to be kind to either of us…
Sleep apnea: gone! (along with the aches and pains that accompanied it…)
The amount of “strangers” in the workplace who notice. One woman I ran into told me that I had a twin on campus. After further discussion, it turns out she was referring to “former” me, thinking it was a completely different person (That was an awesome day….)
Bones sticking out….just plain weird. The bottom of my breast bone (xiphoid process) really freaks me out.
Not playing tug-o-war with my clothes throughout the day (any heavy person knows exactly what I’m talking about) or it’s precursor: stretch-them-out-a-little before you put them on…
Getting through a yoga session and actually feeling refreshed (and not completely sweaty)…also, being able to contort into poses that were previously unavailable to me…still striving towards doing things upside down….!
How much I would enjoy nice clothes, and how dressing up isn’t a chore.
It ain’t all wine and roses: a small but persistent bout with hair loss, loose skin, constantly changing out of sweaty clothes, throwing out clothes that I really liked, resizing my wedding ring. (Small sacrifices all)
...and is it weird that I wanna say "In your face" at my next doctors appointment (November 30th at 2:30, not that I'm keeping track.....)
I would love to have more MFP friends to help keep me honest (it helps just knowing people are out there)9 -

Yesss!!! I find it so hard to explain this to other people who haven't gone through this all! I also hate when people say "you weren't that big before". Honey, yes I was and we all know it! Don't lie to my face.

So much of your post is me exactly...but this especially!
My poor husband has been keeping himself warm by cuddling up to me for 31 years and now I'm like a popcicle!
I had to buy some warm pajamas for the first time in my life and I need to get more soon!

No one told me that I would suddenly become competent:
60 pounds + ago, I volunteered a lot (spent many events on my feet, working the whole time) and was the go-to person to get things done. Now, I am much more particular about how I want to spend my time (more likely to say 'yes' to social engagements and other activities, rather than just pitch-in and do whatever jobs need doing).
Oddly, though, I am finding that the hard-working obese person was rather assumed to be lazy or incompetent, whereas the choosier overweight person is assumed to be more productive and a more valuable contributor.
(So, so strange.)
Can't wait to see what a superhero I am going to be 40 pounds from now!12
