What nobody tells you about losing weight

After becoming very fit and then gaining it back, losing muscle, I never realized how easily things came to me, I could do hikes and walk for miles, I could try those new workout classes without feeling like the elephant in the room... I had a lot more confidence. I want that confidence which I have lost in the last couple of years. Also, smaller clothes don't cost as much.3

As of this morning, I've lost 65 of the 70 pounds I wanted to lose. Almost to maintenance stage.
I didn't know that:
-That I'd so much energy now. I can't sit still and do nothing any more. I get restless and have to go do something-anything outside and active. On days off from work, I sometimes work out twice just to calm down.
-That vegetables aren't just decorations on the side of the plate next to the meat. They CAN taste good.
- I actually enjoy running..... most days.
- I inspired the people who originally inspired me to get started on this
- How good it feels to fit into a pair of jeans the same size as when I was in high school (down from 42" to 30" waist)
- That my feet slide around in my shoes now without the fat cushion to lock them in place.
- that most desserts are too sweet for me now. (I had a huge sweet tooth forever!)
- On the few days when I give in and get fast food, the taste wasn't as good as my brain thought it was and it totally wasn't worth it.
- That it would take over a year for my wife to grasp that this isn't a phase and join in on the fun. (She's now down 35 lbs since )
- That every day I feel like a superhero and NOTHING is impossible.16 -

Can I borrow them?
I hope you realize what a great role model you are for them, and how this is instilling good habits in them that will last a lifetime.

YouTube has fun, Christian music Zumba videos!
I will have to look that up.
I love to jog to Zumba on Pandora but so much of the the lyrics ...make me... blush ....and it seems so wrong to alternate between Zumba and Gospel! I really would love to have PEPPY Christain!
I think BodyPump has some great music. Last edition they used "Brother" by Needtobreathe as one of the tracks. How cool is that!
Nobody tells you how much time you'll spend building playlists or how many podcasts you'll listen to during your workouts.2 -
- lost weight in my butt and just sitting and lying on a bed is no longer confortable for long hours.
- sometimes I just dont recognize myself in the mirror and I have to asked myself: who is this person?
- people point out just how big I used to be all the time3 -
I am tired of people telling me I don't have that much more to lose.Or suddenly everyone is worried that I will "over do it" I'm not even in my healthy BMI yet. Yes I have lost 74 pounds but the top of my healthy BMI is still 20 pounds away. People seem to think they are funny with comments like "20 more pounds you will blow away in the wind" but I still have body image issues making comments that could push me off track doesn't help. I also have friends that are suddenly trying to convince me to buy the larger pair of jeans or loose fitting top.1

I am by no means skinny but this happened today. When your son says "i want to grow up and be skinny like you."2

That I can now walk into a fashion-based clothing store and not think or say "Oh, they'll have nothing to fit me in here..." Because they do! I used to be a big guy and had to shop online or at general supermarkets, it feels good to walk into a fashion shop and actually fit into their merchandise!3

- On the few days when I give in and get fast food, the taste wasn't as good as my brain thought it was and it totally wasn't worth it.
This! I have had cravings, on occasion, for fast food and my brain constantly reminds me of how delicious it is or how delicious it's going to be...then I get it and it's mediocre. It's like my brain remembers how it used to be and hasn't been able to catch up to how it is now. It's the weirdest thing.

That you will be forced to talk about your weight loss far too often, and what the 'secret' was.3

How much nicer it is to bend over when your stomach isn't getting in the way.
How nice it feels to not worry about something being to tight or that you have to stretch it out to feel comfortable
Rediscovering clothes you've been holding on too until you lost the weight, just to discover you don't want to wear it anyway.

I can do my shoelaces up without suffocating
My hips have stopped hurting. I didn't realise they were hurting until they stopped.
Telling people that I've lost weight and have them say "wow! I didn't realise you were that fat!"
That kinda hurts.
Other people who notice my weight loss accuse me of taking drugs or doing some fad diet. Telling me not to get rid of my now too big work uniform because "I'll need it when I gain it all back" seriously???? Thanks for the confidence boost. Not.
But the good outweighs the bad.5 -
-That going from caloric surplus/maintaining back to deficit is HORRIBLE the first few days.. But you get used to it and you become less cranky and irritated within 4-5 days.
-That balance becomes a never-ending quest and it applies to every aspect of your life. From macros to calories, lifestyle, health and fun… The list goes on!
- That some days you will want to sit down and cry and throw in the towel. That you'll look at people who have a better body than you who don't even have to work for it (or maybe they do!) and you'll find that life just isn't fair. It's ok to have those days, it happens to everyone, even those with so-called "perfect" bodies!
- That, if you're a woman, you will lose your boobs as you get smaller… It seems obvious but nobody really expects it to happen and it's always a bit sad when it does haha
- That you will be able to believe that you are both "too fat" and "too skinny" at the same time!! Obviously it's best to concentrate on health, but the physical aspect is always a factor in evaluating progress. I think it's because your mind has held a belief so long that says "You're fat, you've always been fat and you'll never be anything but fat." but at the same time, it recognizes that you have lost a lot of weight and goes into freakout mode saying "OH MY GOD, get some food in you or WE'RE GOING TO STARVE TO DEATH!" haha8 -

Actually its not just for handicapped. if you will notice in Walmart and larger stores there are childrens chairs built into the walls. It is for use by families and wheelchair bound and those who cannot safely move within a regular stall.0 -
You don't have to buy jeans as frequently! Before I lost weight I could get through a pair of jeans in a few months as they would just wear away between the thighs (thank you chub rub!)
Now, I've had my jeans for 6months+ and the only reason for buying new ones would be because they're getting to big!8 -

THIS!!! So much this. . . . I can't remember the last time I wore a hole in the thigh/crotch area of my jeans!1 -
Marlene1667 wrote: »That some people won't be happy for you, and that's OK. One of my good friends is in a rut right now and just gets upset by seeing other people succeed. She wishes she could be the one to buy a house or lose weight. I go out of my way to never talk about my calorie counting around her because she's made it perfectly clear it will never happen for her. And with that attitude she's right. It took me years to save up the money to buy a house and it will take at least a year to get to my goal weight and smart eating afterwards to stay there. Not everyone is ready to put in the work everyday. Which is fine, I didn't decide to lose weight because of her. I did it for myself.
I can relate to this. People often tell me how I am so lucky. I have a great saying for this " I know it's crazy isn't it? The harder I work the luckier I get"
I love that! People tell me that too, that I'm lucky I can do it... I'm going to have to use your line, Thanks1 -

^THIS^
I've been working with a trainer for several months and yesterday he complimented me on my progress, and said how much he was learning professionally from this "project" of taking a 56-year old formerly sedentary and 80-lbs overweight guy to a state of (almost) fitness!3 -

Same boat. Also, losing weight changes your center of gravity, so I've been experiencing some breast related back pain. I'm going bra shopping next week with high hope that it might help because I don't like the idea of surgery.
Don't get me wrong, for the sake of my health and sanity, I WILL do it, but it is still surgery.0 -

It's definitely better if it happens naturally. I might consider surgery if I end up stuck around this weight, but I'd rather not.1
