Hey everybody! It's been a few days... I did have one slip up but got right back on track the following day. So, I was proud of that.

Cheryl - Happy Birthday! I want to be as healthy as you when I am forty! You inspire me! My class at the Y was cancelled tonight so I did the elliptical for 20 minutes. You are amazing to me to be able to go for 50 minutes!!

Jess - Your arms look great! You are well on your way to your 5 pound goal!

Amy - Welcome! I am trying to drink way more water after hearing how much you drink! My problem in the winter is that I don't like to be cold and drinking a lot of water makes me chilly! You are doing great!

Jawaria - Great job on controlling your cravings! That is where I slipped up on Sunday night:angry:
    Thanks for the example!

I have decided to get me family of 6 to eat more like me. I'm tired of fixing my food AND their food.:grumble: And how nice it would be for my kids to start now instead of waiting until their my age!

Tonight they had whole grain pasta with sauce and chicken, green beans and homemade whole wheat rolls. I didn't have any whiners. If I could just find a good recipe for whole wheat, sugarless brownies that still taste yummy!

There is something about eating out that throws me off every single time! I just can't seem to master the art of clean dining. The portions are always too large, much bigger than I am now used to eating at one time, and of course if you put that much food in front of me, I'm going to eat it. My salad at Panera was big enough for four people! And I felt physically terrible after finishing it. Plus the dressing was sweetened, so when I got home, I ended up sneaking into my kids' chocolate! (I also had a tiny taste of a white chocolate covered coffee bean that my daughter had bought earlier in the day. I nibbled half of it and threw the rest away. That could have been enough to get the "crack"-addiction started, too.) Arrrgh. It had been several weeks since I had eaten anything like that.

Yesterday was a crazy day, in general. I'm glad it's over and I can begin today with a "clean" slate!

    Thank you, dalawna!

My secret to staying on the elliptical for so long is music! I have all my music arranged on my iPod by BPM, so I just choose the speed that I want and go. I make it a goal to get through every song, one at a time, until the timer on the machine ends. Sometimes I pretend I'm dancing or playing Guitar Hero. Exercising on machines always drove me crazy before the invention of MP3 players. Of course, I'd rather be running outside in the fresh air, but at least exercising inside on machines is tolerable now, and even fun.

I have the same situation with food in my house -- everyone usually wants something different to eat. I make it, within reason, but it can be frustrating! I set a healthy example for my kids, and talk to them about why I eat the way I do, but I won't force them to adopt my eating habits. I prefer that they learn to gauge their own body's reaction to foods and to make their own choices based upon that. I want them to acquire those skills sooner rather than later. But it's not always easy to watch the choices they make, that's for sure!

I think you did very well for your bday!!!! A little chocolate on your bday is much better than a big slice of cake (aka, crack! ). My worst problem is BUFFETS!! I just run away from them now!! The last couple times we have been out for Chinese buffet I've gotten sick after eating so that kind of cured me!! You're right that portion sizes are huge. I always ask for dressing on the side and just oil & vinegar so I can control how much I put on it. My favorite is FlatTop Grill where I am eating as a bday lunch w/ my dh today!! (a day late. ) You can PILE it with veggies, add some lean protein, and use just a little sauce. And they have brown rice too!

Me too! I LOVE my ipod. I use http://www.cardiocoach.com which are downloadable mp3 workouts that really motivate and push you.

As for the food situation. It takes an adjustment period at first. I don't make my kids eat perfectly, but they have to try what I fix. They have gotten used to whole grain pasta, brown rice, and I've only ever bought whole grain bread. They won't even eat the white bread that they serve at school sometimes! I do buy them snacks like pretzels or goldfish that I don't eat but they usually snack on fruit, yogurt, string cheese, etc. We talk a lot about healthy choices and they know how important healthy foods are to your body. I think it was an eye opener for my 10yr old when she went on a camping trip w/ our good friends & their dd last summer. They packed typical camping food- hot dogs, white buns, chips, desserts, soda. She ate one meal of junk and ended up throwing up because she felt so terrible. She came home to tell me that now she knew why I didn't eat junk food. So just keep helping them make better choices and they will see how much better they feel too!

I totally was wishen I had my ipod with me. Next time. I'm sure it would have made a huge difference. Instead I had to listen the girls next to me talking about how one of them left their husband that whole saga, with every other word being a swear word. UUGGHH!

My kids are 10, 8,5 and 2 so I can still make a huge impact on the way they eat and think about food. I made whole wheat pizza the other day and they liked it. They are enjoying brown rice, whole wheat pancakes yesterday morning, and I make whole wheat bread weekly. We could improve on the packaged snack food. I told them I wasn't going to buy any more packaged treats, I will just make some healthy alternatives and freeze them so they are ready to go. It definately takes more time and usually money to eat healthy. No wonder so many Americans are overweight, especially kids. The other food is much quicker and usually cheaper. Everybody is so busy and those foods are a quick meal.

The last 2 mornings for breakfast I have had:
    3 egg whites, scrambled
1 part skim mozzerlla (SP?) stick, cut in slices
    Taco sauce
I put it all in a whole grain Kangaroo pocket (80 cal)
Maybe a fruit if I'm still hungry. It is tasty!

Cher my secret is to live in the desert! LOL! It is so dry here I really do not struggle as much to get it in. But I find after making a concious effort to drink more for a day or two, my body starts craving it and I can't get enough water. I keep a bottle on my desk at work that holds a liter and 1/2 and I drink that at work. Usually by a few days in that is not enough and I have to take 2 bottles to work. According to my doctor I should drink 24 cups of caff. free liquids, so I try to reach that daily. I really feel better when I do especially if I am losing weight it helps keep my system flushed of toxins released by the fat. Otherwise I start feeling yucky and bogged down.

I live in the desert too (AZ) so I shouldn't have any excuse! I have been using a quart jar at home as my cup:drinker: I had been doing good to empty it 4 times but then I slacked off. You have inspired me to get back. It definately makes me spend more time in the bathroom though!:embarassed:

Looks like everyone else was busy y'day too!! I tried to track my cals, but not exactly sure what my lunch was eating out. I ate a lot of veggies, a little brown rice, and some chicken.

Feeling good today though! Off to work out- ChaLean Burn It Off! (cardio) and then some kettlebell swings/ cleans.

Have a super Saturday! Busy day ahead for me so I'll check in when I can!

Amy and dalawna, my husband and I lived in the desert in Tucson for two years before we got married. I think I've been dehydrated ever since! I've never been able to recover, and we left 14 years ago. My tongue still looks like a dry sponge, showing the indentations of my teeth on the sides. It's terrible that I've needed to rehydrate myself for so long, and have never managed to do it. :noway: I really need to get this issue licked  (pun intended  ).

I'm feeling discouraged, but I'm trying not to whine! Sometimes it's better to remain quiet until I'm feeling positive again. :grumble:

I received two new books in the mail yesterday -- The Body Fat Solution, by Tom Venuto and The New Rules of Lifting for Women, by Lou Schuler. I think they're confusing me with their conflicting information (which also conflicts with The Eat-Clean Diet), rather than helping! (I'm also feeling conflicted about Tosca Reno and The Eat-Clean Diet itself.) So I'm just keeping quiet until I get my head on straight.

I'm very envious of everyone doing ChaLean and P90 workouts! Boredom is setting in and I'm having a hard time motivating myself to exercise lately. :frown: I really need something new to do. Grrr. I'll come out of this on the right side soon!

If I had it to do all over again, I'd definitely start out with whole, clean foods for my kids from the beginning. Unfortunately, I did the best I knew how at the time, so they were introduced to processed foods early on, and now they insist they like them better! :grumble: I thought I was feeding them a healthy diet, but like most people, I had no idea that most of the foods in the grocery store were junk.

You make a good point -- no matter how you ate as a child (or how you were forced to eat), you will still have to figure it out for yourself at some point, and one way of doing that will usually be to eat the very things you were denied. The last thing I want is to give my kids something to rebel against by forcing them to eat the way I eat. That will drive them right toward the "junk" simply because it's forbidden. The quickest way to making unhealthy foods more attractive is to tell kids they can't have them! The minute they want independence, one of their first ways of attempting to gain it will be to prove they *can* do what I say they can't.

Often what I do (although it makes me cringe a LOT!), is to buy a ton of the very thing that I don't want them to eat. If they fall in love with Snickers bars, for example, I'll buy a huge package of them. Usually what happens is that my kids get sick of that thing that they thought they had to have very quickly and don't want them anymore! They discover that Snickers bars aren't as good as they thought they were. Unfortunately, there is so much junk in the stores that there's always something new that they want, and I feel like I'm constantly buying them junk. So I conquer their cravings one by one -- the girls don't feel controlled or denied, and I feel like I'm in some small way still winning.

I think it's GREAT that you have the knowledge and opportunity to get your kids used to good food from the start! If only I could go back in time about 12 years....

That is exactly where I am!!! Stuck on the last few pounds, and they won't budge! I thought clean eating would be the answer, and it's helping me in so many other ways, but getting me lean doesn't seem to be one of them. So I'm wondering -- am I eating too much, am I eating too little? Am I being too impatient? Am I just worrying about it all too much? What the h*ll?

Thanks for the belated HB!

What are the conflicts in the books?

Count calories, don't count calories, weigh and measure your food, don't weigh and measure your food -- just eyeball it -- eat less, don't eat less; do cardio, you don't need cardio; follow a particular diet, don't follow a particular diet; work smaller muscle groups, only work large muscle groups. Aaahhh! My head's spinning!

I was really hoping for more specific calorie advice, but all I get is a ballpark for the "average" woman. I am not average. I am short. I just don't know how much to eat! And whether I eat more or less, it doesn't seem to affect anything. Maybe I am focusing too much on calories and completely missing the real answer, whatever that may be. All I know is that I need to do SOMETHING differently because I'm stuck and nothing is happening.

Here's what's been bothering me about Tosca for a couple of weeks now. I thought she was all about "eat more, not less," as long as you're eating healthy, nutrient-rich foods. She says that over and over throughout here books: Eat more food, not less.

Then I found out that there are people doing something called the Cooler Plans, taken from her first book, in the chapter called "Taking It With You," about packing coolers to keep your foods healthy when you're away from home. There are three Cooler Plans, with the most restrictive being the first one, the second one being in-between, and the third being basically how I eat. It does not explain in the book what you're supposed to do with these plans, or when and for how long you should follow each one. (It may explain further in the new edition.) I honestly did not think much about them when I read the book. I just thought they were suggestions for packing a cooler.

But there are people out there taking them very seriously. There are people eating nothing but Cooler Plan #1 for a couple of weeks. Here's what it says to eat. You pack your cooler for the whole day and eat nothing but the following:

    - 1 apple (80 cals)
    - 1 yam or sweet potato (180 cals)
    - 1 cup oatmeal cooked with water (150 cals)
    - 5 5-oz. servings of chicken (220 cals), tuna (150 cals), egg whites (100 cals), turkey (150 cals), other fish (150 cals), etc.
    - 5 1/2-cup servings of raw veggies: Cucumbers, radishes, tomatoes, lettuce, asparagus, celery, green beans, or sprouts (minimal cals)
    - 1 gallon of distilled water
    - No juice, no bread, no salad dressings

I calculated the calories myself. This is *maybe* 1200 calories, easily not! I understand that there are people out there who want to get "ripped" and compete in physique contests. Obviously, Tosca does very well with it, and she says not to eat this way for more than 5 days to a week (not in the book, but in the forums on her website). How long does it take the body to go into starvation mode? I was just blown aways when I learned that people were using her diet to eat so little. It seems to contradict everything else she says.

The more I learn, the less I feel like I know! :blushing:  :noway:

Oh my goodness I just finished logging my foods for the day and I have had 55 grams of fiber. Holy cow. Well I should have no problem getting moving huh:wink: I actually got my calories in today but not all my workout calories. But with all of that fiber I'm definitely not getting any more in. I had a flat belly shake today by Jorge Cruise from the 3 Hour Diet cookbook. I accidently doubled the cereal in it to 1 cup I looked at the box instead of the recipe and it was that Kashi Friends 50% of your daily fiber. Ugh! LOL! Oh well it will all come out fine. You should see my frig. I am so proud of me it is full of beautiful natural colors. I am lacking in the red veggie dept though. I don't care for tomatoes except in sauces or on a sandwich I did get some tri colored peppers though to make some black bean burgers tomorrow. And I have Trader Joe's Organic Marinara. Yum!

Crazy weekend here and I haven't even had time to track. I've done well, and even made 2 coffee cakes, apple streusel bread, and muffins to take to church this morning. (none eaten for me though!)

    I'll catch back up tomorrow!

I finally got in a run today (1.6 miles on the treadmill) and a full body weight workout after two days of not exercising. I've had a sick kid in the house, so I have an excuse, and I'll take it. I've just been feeling a bit bored with my routine and have been having a hard time motivating myself, along with feeling like I'm not seeing any physical results from clean eating.. But I should know that not exercising doesn't help my mood! I'm always much happier after I've had a good sweat! So I apologize for the whining. :blushing:

I broke down and bought Tom Venuto's Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle. I'm feeling really ready for something serious and precise. What I'm doing isn't working, and he gets really precise about getting lean and figuring out how many calories to eat. Time to stop whining and get proactive!

I'm increasing my calories again! When I joined in September, I started out with MFP's suggestion of 1200 and I did not lose, so a few weeks ago I went up to 1320, and then to 1400. During all that, the scale hasn't budged in either direction (beyond a couple pounds), and I've felt like I've been getting flabbier, if not heavier (could be my imagination?). Now I'm following the formula in Burn the Fat, Feed the Muscle, which suggests a weight loss level of 1559! Ironically, that's exactly what MFP suggested for *maintenance* level (1560). The BFFM formula gives a maintenance level of 1948! :noway:

The only thing the BFFM formula doesn't take into account is my lean body mass, which is the next thing I need to figure out how to measure, and then there's a formula that includes that, too. I assume my LBM is higher than most people's, since I've been lifting weights for over two years, so I'm going to trust that the first formula is accurate, and perhaps even low!

I'm also going to try zig-zagging, eating three days at weight loss level, followed by one at maintenance, to keep my metabolism from getting used to functioning at weight-loss levels. This is feeling fun again. (Now if only STS would get here! :grumble: )
