Carol in NC - thanks for the kind words. Feel free to mind my business... doesn't bother me in the slightest. I did the virtual thing for a lot of years... and there are benefits and drawbacks. You never leave work if you work at home being the biggest drawback. Seriously contemplating starting a "Virtual Assistant" consulting, where if you justs need an admin for a little bit, not forever, hiring out that way. I'm just so dang bossy, though. Hee.

JanetR - close enough to DG, it's Family Dollar stores... and once I'm done there, I'm going to pop over to WorkForce Development, the state agency, and find out the details on the career fair TDCJ is holding these next couple days (Texas Department of Criminal Justice). There are two correctional facilities in close proximity, and they're doing a couple things tomorrow and Thursday. Don't want to be a correctional officer, but wouldn't mind working in an office again. I think. We'll see. The benefits, of course, are amazing. The pay is... eh. But even minimum wage is more than I'm bringing in at the moment. And thanks for the cheerleading when you feel like ca-ca, but you HAVE to stop wiping your nose on your pom-poms, people will talk!

Ooohhh, is that why my pom-poms stopped swishing merrily through the air? Uh oh :*

Cheri - Has your hubby checked with colleges, including community colleges? I randomly see those types of positions open when I'm cruising the local college websites for jobs.

Yes he has Carol. At this point he is applying to just about any college, university, community college looking for a Career Services person. We can still move just about anywhere at this point. We eventually will retire back to Florida where we lived for 11 years previously. Thanks for the suggestion.

Cheri, maybe there is a not-for profit community organization or or a governmental position somewhere?

Good morning everyone! I got back to town yesterday and went to the school only to find that the kids weren't there. They said my son had sent a "friend" to pick them up. Now, that would have been fine except that he said he didn't have anybody else to get them and we had to cut our trip short and raced home for nothing. He didn't even bother to call me to let me know. I can't help but feel that I was being punished for wanting to do something for myself instead of being at my son's beck and call at all times. It's really frustrating sometimes.

Joyce and DJ, my general sense most times is that he is in better condition than he pretends, and milks it when it's convenient. (I'm basing that on his past behavior of being a drama queen all his life.) For example, he can't manage to go grocery shopping because he's too sick, or to go get his own oxygen bottles, but he can go out to buy big basketfuls of soda when he runs out. Other times I feel like he should be in hospice care, because he is so bad off. It's a terribly tense situation and I don't know what to make of it all. I feel terrible not being a more supportive mother to him, but I've been burned so many times I can't count them all. I really hope he is pretending because I can't mentally face the other option. I know he has not had an infusion in three months, so his health has deteriorated from that alone. He has an appointment with a new pulmonologist on January 19th, where I'm hoping he will get back on the infusion schedule. If he makes it that far.

I know that the kids need a more stable place, but if I say anything at all he will yank them from me completely. It may seem like I'm puffing up my own importance in the situation, but I feel like hubby and I are the only stability the kids have and if they lost me they would be worse off than they are now. It's a really thin tightrope.

Alison, it was Katla who broke her wrist, not me.

Katla, has the swelling gone down?

SandfordRoberts, I love your collage work. It's great that you can be part of that group studio. How exactly does it work? Do you have a formal coop agreement, or something less formal? I'm working with two friends to try to turn my gallery into a coop gallery. We are trying to decide on the details now, with bylaws and membership agreements and stuff like that. I hope that works out. It would be nice to be part of a group like that, and it would be nice to have someone else in my building too. I'm part of a large group of potters but we all have our own studios and just get together for shows and monthly meetings.

There is some good news with my progress to report. I weighed 1.2 pounds less yesterday and today than the day before. Also, I did my 10,000 steps yesterday for the first time in a month. Of course, last night I could barely walk, but oh well. My doctors appointment is today at 3:30. I'm sure she will just refer me to a specialist, but at least it's a start. I have GOT to get some relief from these painful joints.

Well, I'm ready to get started doing something constructive. I hope you all have a wonderful day!

First time I have joined a group for support. I am 47 this year, with LOTS to lose, but I decided to start today instead of January 1st. Trying to not make resolutions, but instead make good choices. Goals are to exercise for at least 20 minutes a day, and logging all of my food. I drink lots of water already - I gave up pop May 4, 2015...so far so good. I have a desk job so I need to make sure I exercise. Any support would help.

    Hello Ladies,
What a great group. Mind if I join you? Today is my 53rd birthday and it is a lovely sunny 23f outside. In Dec I had gastric bypass surgery and I'm busily walking my way back to health. Next week I return to work at my regular job in IT. I'm married with a son in Med school and a brilliant daughter in law who plays classical guitar.

    My goals for January are:
    - get back to baseline with my life. Work, singing, and everyday activities
    - Get to 8,000 steps/day
    - Start the great closet purge of 2016

Loking forward to following you ladies. Post often, L.

I am going to have to start making notes to keep everyone straight and to remember who said what!

I had a good first week - lost a little over 3 pounds. Most of that was "Christmas bloat," but I'll take it. My challenge today is breakfast - am having a breakfast meeting with my assistant. My goal is to pick the healthiest thing on the menu, then figure out what I need to eat (or not eat) for the rest of the day to keep within my calorie allotment!

My goal for this thread is to start learning everyone's names! I hope everyone has a great day. We can do this!

Call me crazy but I love to see other people happy and succeeding .

    Good Morning Ladies,

CarolNC, you are right that it is ridiculous at the low pay some places offer for the work they want done. Unfortunately here at the beach, wages are very low but prices are high because it’s a tourist area. Sometimes ya just can’t win. Good luck with finding the right job! ((((Hugs)))) congrats on being released from PT.

Betty, good point about not having time to eat if we read all the posts. I do have a rule about no eating at my computer.

Jennifer, Heather knows that I love learning about the British terms. When reading her posts, I often imagine it in a British accent, although she tells me she doesn’t have one, that I do. Lol

Katla, I can’t believe none of the ortho docs can see you immediately since you have a fresh break. Bummer!! I remember that awkward temp cast I had on when I broke my wrist. Gosh I couldn’t wait to get it off. The think I didn’t know was how often it would be changed so I got a different color every time. I’m glad you aren’t in pain. (((Hugs)))

DrKay, congrats on that big bridge game win. I love to win, I don’t care what the prize. What town do you live in? (if you don’t mind saying)

Rori, don’t you need to take a business trip to a SC beach? smiley-laughing010.gif Glad the journaling is helping your mood. (((Hugs)))

Rene, thanks. It’s just so much easier to respond to a name than some of the screen names people use. I often find that I don’t respond to people without a name because their screen name is too hard to remember. (Ok, I’ll admit, I have a short memory and it’s worse with names than anything.)

MicheleNC, I hope this cold weather we are getting will be the end of the hard winter. Lol It’s supposed to be back up to 60’s here by the weekend.

Joyce, you gonna ask your doc about his weight gain?? LOL So sorry Charlie is still having such issues. Good luck with the decluttering. I’m working up to doing some here.

Janetr, cool deal on the water aerobics. I do hope your cold will let go and you will get well.

Artemis, congrats on that weight loss. Eating right and exercise really works. Come tax season, there won’t be the volume of posts that we have now because unfortunately a lot of the new ladies will drop by the wayside. I wish they’d prove me wrong, but it happens. You keep up the great work!

Rosi, welcome. How wonderful that you got to retire at such a young age. Good for you on catching that weight when your jeans are getting snug. Many of us didn’t do it until we had gone up a few sizes. Come often and join right in.

Allison, Allison, Allison, do I have to put on my boots and give you a swift kick? nono.gif Good grief, my friend, when you are eating all that junk, log on here and ask for help. That being said, move on and work on today. It’s definitely not always easy but we can do this. (((((Hugs)))))

Lisa, you should have posted a picture of your lovely outfit this morning. Lol “better looking bag ladies”, I doubt it!

Cheri, sending best wishes for your DH to find a good job and fast. (((Hugs)))

Deb, welcome. I’m a firm believer that any movement is better than none. Leslie Sansone has videos for walking that are good and you can find some on UTube. Good luck!!

Gail, welcome to you also. Since you said you aren’t computer savy, I’ll let you know that all Capital letters is considered SHOUTING! Tell us a bit about yourself to help us get to know you. This is a very supportive and informative group of ladies so come often.

Walzllw, welcome to you as well. The more the merrier. Please sign each post with the name you want to be called as it makes it easier to respond to you. I love the picture of your doggie. Lots of us are animal lovers here.

m1277.gifto any Newbies that I missed. Come often and join in the chat. This thing works!! Please sign your post with what you want to be called. It makes it easier for us to respond to you. Also a location is great, be it specific or general. We are happy to have you join us.

I did about an hour workout on the Wii this morning after my vigorous 6 minutes of moving while watching morning news. Holding my plank for a minute but the Wii tells me I’m not steady. Oh well, at least I’m doing it. I’m not quite caught up but out of time and need to move on. It was just under 30 here this morning and my little “Pepper” had to have his jacket on to go outside. He was so excited he wouldn't hold still. Going to try to post a picture. Had a little static electricity in those ears. It made me really sad when I got his coat out of the closet because there was one for Max there. We still really miss him. kowdu4izgjiw.jpg

I hope all of you have a healthy and happy day. rose.gif

    Words I live by:
Savor. I have to slow down and savor every bite.
    and
Opportunity. Each day offers new opportunities for good health and happiness if we just look for them and choose them.

Rori: You are correct about determination, but I'm not sure about Saturday's ride. At this point it may be canceled due to icy roads. Missing one lesson won't make me happy but I can handle it. More than 1 is not ok. I'm going in for a cast tomorrow & I have a wish list featuring getting to bend & unbend my elbow & the use of my right thumb. :grumble:

Artemis: This forum begins & ends my days, too.

Elaine: As far as I know, spot reducing is not realistic, but you can choose to exercise an area to strengthen it or increase flexibility. Your body stores fat in its own unique way & releases it its own way, too. I'd love to shrink my skin, but that requires surgery & leaves scars so I'll take things as nature allows. :ohwell:

Lisa: My brain is wired for mixed dominance. My right hand is more dominant than my left but is not as coordinated as I would like, or as someone without mixed dominance. My left hand is not as strong, flexible, or coordinated as the right, likely because it isn't used as much. :ohwell:

Kimses: I do have a Mac but if I used dictation it would drive DH nuts. He has problems with hearing & would always worry that I was talking to him. At some level, I am enjoying the challenge. :flowerforyou:

    Animika: Welcome back!

    Pip: Morning backatcha!

    Newbies: Welcome! :flowerforyou:

Heather: Mornings at the gym are full of 50+ folks & stay at home moms. Afternoons & evenings are populated by a younger group.

Katheryn: Ambidexterity is a mixed blessing, in my experience. Sometimes you just aren't as good at a skill with either hand as a person who is clearly left or right. I've never been an athlete but I suspect ambidexterity could be a burden in many sports. I don't know but someone else might. In the bad old days, lefties were often forced to use their right hands & it was not good for their coordination, skill, or self-esteem. :noway:

I plan to ask DH to wash my hair for me today. I'm sure he will give it a try. If he sends me to the beauty shop I'll consider it a waste of money. I like to spend money on necessities and fun. A shampoo/blowdry is neither.

    Have a great day!

    Katla in Beautiful NW Oregon

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” Thomas A. Edison

    January Goals :
    1. Log every bite and swallow.
    2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on flexibility and back strength.
    3. Have fun every day.
    4. Drink at least three glasses of water daily, preferably more!
    5. Eliminate alcohol.
    6. Monitor sleep. Try to average 7 or more hours of sleep nightly.

    Happy Tuesday ! ! !

    Go Hea-ther ! Go Hea-ther ! ! !

Becca – I also know a few selections from Opera’s, and also have no idea what the words mean. I love listening to The Three Tenors; mostly at Christmas time. I truly enjoy Musicals, so that is one of my Pandora stations. // When I had pneumonia on top of Influenza last year, I bought an entire case of super-poise pads, because the coughing was so bad. I hope yours does not develop into pneumonia. Take Care ! ! ! // What’s up with teenage boys? They either shower too much for my water bill, or not enough. My DS won’t get in unless I ask, then he wants to stay in forever. He rarely uses shower gel or shampoo, but thinks deodorant will do the trick. He also has a little more than peach fuzz on his face, but plenty of wirey hairs coming from a few moles, that he refuses to shave (so I cut them when he’s in his seatbelt in the car). He is 15, and definitely in the in-between stage. Hugs for you to get through your final child’s teen years ! ! !

Katla – my break was also closed of the radius. He stopped the cast just far enough from my fingers that I could still type with 4 fingers (I am a receptionist, so I had to be able to type), but he stabilized my thumb. He didn’t have different colors for the cast, so I went to a sporting goods store and bought a pair of hot pink “shooters sleeves”, so when I wore bright colored shirts, most people didn’t even notice my arm was in a cast, it just looked like I was wearing a shooters sleeve. Extra long q-tips from the doctors office worked for cleaning my skin under the cast (but I had to be careful to not break them). First I would soak one in rubbing alcohol, then follow with another one dipped in a pretty scented body lotion

It’s getting busy here, so I better send this so I can get some work done (I tend to concentrate on reading and forget where I left off on my work .

    Hugs to Everyone ! ! !

    Whee, you & me both!

DJ, I smile every time one of your posts pop up. I went to college in downtown Boston (nearly 40 years ago, eeek!) and my friends and I often went to the Exeter St Theater on Friday nights to catch the midnight showing of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. When I see you screen name it takes me back!

Katla - When I was in Montpellier I went and had a shampoo and blow dry just for fun. It was very relaxing with a lovely head massage. B)

DJ - How many times do I have to tell you - there is NO SUCH THING AS A "BRITISH" ACCENT! ! If you mean a BBC or Received Pronunciation (RP) accent, then you would be a bit disappointed with mine. I don't sound a bit like Downton. Mine varies according to whom I am talking to, so it goes from nearly Cockney, through Hampshire and into an approximation of RP. This parrot like tendency is very useful when it comes to speaking a foreign language, but a bit disconcerting for those close to me when I switch from minute to minute. I only have to get on a train to Glasgow and I'm sounding Scottish. My children used to be very embarassed. Every area of the British Isles has its own distinctive accent, as does the US. The rich and powerful all tend to speak RP wherever they come from as they all go to expensive private schools. (Called Public Schools) :ohwell: The younger generation, like the royal princes tend to use a bit of "estuary" English and use glottal stops so they don't sound too "posh".
You know I love you, don't you.

Got through this afternoon with a heap of raw cauliflower, a carrot and celery sticks, all dipped in calorie free dressing. :D

I've made a pneumonia jab appointment for 6th Feb.

Katla - good luck tomorrow. Will be thinking of you. <3

Looking forward to my Pernod in 20 minutes. B)

Heather, thanks for the description of British accents ... err, I mean, the various accents one hears in the British Isles ;) That was very interesting.

Every area of the British Isles has its own distinctive accent, as does the US.

No kidding! I grew up in Western Massachusetts, very near the NY state border, where we tended to sound like people from "upstate" New York. Vowels tended to be streched out -- think "saaaaandwich".

Then I went to college and gradual school in Eastern MA -- only a couple of hours' drive across the tiny state on the Mass Turnpike, but omg I could not understand anyone at first! My roommates in college grew up nearby so by the time I finished college I had a pretty decent Boston accent of my own, my R's were very much MIA -- I could pahk my cahh with the best of them. :p There were plenty of regional variations even in that small area, people from the NE part of the state, Mahblehead and thereabouts, sounded a bit different than people from Fall Rivah in the SE corner of the state.

Then I moved to Northern California, where I settled for the duration. I pretty much lost my Boston accent and regained my R's (my Boston accent wasn't really hard-wired since I didn't grow up there). People here tend to be from all over the place, so there doesn't seem to be a distinctive accent here. But whenever we fly into Boston to visit family, my husband gets a kick out of the fact that my R's seem to vanish the moment we step off the plane.

The regional variations probably aren't as pronounced now than back when I was a youngster, since people move more routinely. So it goes.

    Cheers, - Rosie
