Hi everyone, I'm new to fitness pal and would love to make friends to share this journey. I was in good shape up until last December when i had surgery. Then had another. Not major but knee and foot so they broke my routine of good eating and gym. Got on the Dr scale and saw i was about 15 lbs more than i an comfortable with, found the app and now keeping track so i can shed a little before I'm 110% back on my feet. The past few days were okay with the calorie counting but today I'm feeling a little hungrier. Any suggestions on low calorie foods that fill you up?? I'd appreciate it. Also if someone would message and let me know how to friend people I'd appreciate it. OK goodnight from me see you tomorrow!0

Michele - Thank you. I truly am a long way from skinny, but so much better than I used to be. This best thing is, my health is so much better and I feel so good. How long will you and Vince stay in Florida? Are you feeling better by now, hope so.

Mary - thank you, it surprised me that my daughter referred to me as "skinny" but it was nice to hear, tho I'm not really. I do think the exercise has made a difference in size even if not in weight.

Hi! New to MFP, wanting to shape up and lose some weight. I live in SE Portland - David Douglas/Centennial/Parkrose are my comfort zone, My two sons are grown and my oldest grandchild graduates High school this year. I have always been athletic but ruptured an Achilles tendon 6 years ago. I have packed on about 10 pounds for each of those years and my goal is to drop from my current weight of 185, to my goal of 140. I work a mid/swing shift, love to roller skate, have planet fitness membership, enjoy swimming, yoga, walking, etc.0

Hi all!
Done my exercises. I woke up late today to find DH already up and making tea and breakfast. Oooops! I usually make the first cup of tea,but he couldn't wait any longer as the man was coming to take the car away for service.
The weights I am using are three sets of dumbbells, 7.5 kgs, 9 kgs and 2 kgs. I waver between the first two, depending on how strong I'm feeling. :laugh: I use them for bicep curls, then I lift one above my head with both hands for triceps, then use one at a time with one foot on the bed for triceps. I use the 2kg ones for side arm raises, but might go up to 5kg ones soon. I don't do a lot of weights, because it comes at the end of a long workout on the machines plus floor exercises, which are a kind of Pilates/yoga/balance. But it seems to be just enough to give me muscle definition and improve my strength. Like Mary and Barbie I highly recommend some form of weight lifting, even a little can improve our strength, which is very important as we get older and is great for bone health.
I do all these weight exercises in my bedroom on a space no bigger than a yoga mat and sit on my bed for some of them as I have a bad knee. I keep the weights in a cupboard under the spare TV. I bought the dumbbells from Amazon. The poor postman!
I hope this is helpful to any new people who want to make a start, but can't imagine going to a gym to do it. I have a second hand copy of STRONG WOMEN STAY YOUNG from Amazon that Barbie recommended. It is very easy to follow if you are just starting out with baby steps. Remember - anything is better than nothing. :flowerforyou:
Rori - so glad you are beginning to feel better. You are such a hard working and determined person I can imagine that a gradually failing husband must be very frustrating. What is his diagnosis? Sounds like you will have some hard choices ahead, but I'm sure you will make good decisions. Compassion for ourselves is essential, but sometimes the hardest lesson to learn.
Janetr - I am sure you will get right back on track. You are right, you have done incredibly well to keep the weight gain to such a small figure. Well done on the skinny compliment! :flowerforyou:

I am so relieved! My DS#1 has at last replied to me. He sent a text. It says he is getting two dogs in June, when he has holiday, so that they can be company for each other. He was thinking about retired greyhounds.
He also said that he has had his annual check for diabetes 2 and his blood sugar has gone down by quite a bit. He is hoping to reverse it by diet and losing weight. He had become morbidly obese through his severe depression over the last couple of years.
When I don't hear from him I worry, because of the depression. All seems to be ok though. He lives in Nottingham, which is quite a journey away. He also exhibits Asperger like traits, but is able to empathise and can be quite emotional. He has had relationships, but not recently. He doesn't want children, which cuts the field down a bit. He is 40 in November.
We never stop worrying, do we, but I am very glad to have heard from him.
Car man has brought the car back, all polished and shiny. Free service, so we've saved around $200.
I've turned my laptop on, so I've got to do some writing. :bigsmile:
For lunch I had Wan Ton soup, with seaweed. All assembled by me. Delicious! I threw in the remains of the tin of DGC's sweetcorn. Yum. 300 calories.

Cheri – Thanks for sharing those short quips of your life. I could tell similar stories with my TBI hubby. Some days it gets exhausting, then he turns a corner (usually I tell him my love tank is empty) and life is grand again. I was told the main way to tell it is his brain injury and not just selfishness is that he “forgets” to do things that are important to him, too. Sending text pictures has helped with his memory, but the other stuff I just keep telling myself it is not my fault and wait for him to come back around. Hugs all around ! ! !

My arthritis is starting to create a bad attitude that I am hoping to kick to the curb soon. Co-workers are asking me about my “sour” face, and I know it is just my pain level. If it will go away from my right foot and left knee, it would make a HUGE difference while I’m walking around doing my thing, because I don’t think I scrunch my face while at my desk. But I was able to stay on the bike for 20 minutes this morning (most thanks goes to Janis Joplin on Pandora), and as soon as I copy/paste this, I will do my second set of 10 pushups leaning on the shelf near my desk. I added a sticker for yesterday, but I’m thinking about my morning snack already today, so I must distract myself. Rock on Everyone ! ! !

Rori, As I read your post and felt your pain and sadness at not feeling well enough to get up and exercise, I thought that reading or listening to audio books could be something productive to fill the time and then you said that you'd been reading a book that gave you an important insight into your life....the time has been productive and it won't be too many days before you can be back to physical exercise.
Joyce, bravo for Charlie figuring out that eating at home is a much better solution for him so he can enjoy his meal in spite of his health challenges.

Good morning from very wet Fairlawn, oHIo!
Off to the hemorrhoid doc this morning. Sorry if TMI...I only bring it up because I put it off for so many years and thought if maybe I shared it would encourage others to take care of a problem. Worse than the dentist and gyno I just did not want to attend to this problem. Having some internal hemorrhoids taken care of and in retrospect ya gotta do what ya gotta do! A nearly painless procedure with a very gentle and understanding specialist.
A rainy cold day here perfect for reading and crocheting with a cup of coffee.
Just had my annual physical and got a referral to a sleep specialist and a dietitian. Will let you all know the results of those visits. Not scheduled yet because I am waiting, waiting, waiting for them to call and set up the appointments. My cholesterol was up a bit but the doc said the "good" part was okay. Also had a high calcium reading. He told me to stop my calcium supplements and have a re-read in 3 months. As I continue to take care of ME I feel better and betterer! Been a bit of a challenge for the hubs and the $$$ involved but I did wait until I had met my deductible. However, now that he's unemployed our medical insurance will be changing up?!
Our daughter has an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon this afternoon to see if she tore her meniscus and needs surgery. How she did this getting up from her couch we will never know. If she does I will go to Chicago for a week or two and help her recuperate.

Terri, I get a sour face from my arthritis pain too. I am trying to watch it for two reasons. First, it made my girls think I was mad at them. Even though I told them it was just the pain, they constantly worry I am mad, especially the younger one. Secondly, I was getting lines around my mouth from pursing my lips- the old lady lines that smokers get! I did NOT want that! LOL With all the scare about NSAIDs, even ibuprofen, and heart/ stroke dangers I had been trying to tolerate a lot more pain before taking something. But I am thinking lately that was a bad move and I should just take the risk for better quality of life for me AND the girls. It is not good for their tender psyche to think I am mad at them all the time!0

If you like salads; Olive Garden’s (to go) salad is only 140 calories including one package of salad dressing. Fiber One or Nature’s Own/Only have about 120 – 160 calories in them. Weight Watcher’s small bites – about 90 calories; all these make good snacks; Popcorn, too (without the added butter). Just make sure you measure or weigh your food as portion control is key to losing weight. Anything that passes you lips needs to be tracked. You don't have to really restrict yourself as long as you tract every bite, sip, taste while cooking, etc. Get a good set of measuring spoons and cups; and a good scale to weigh your food. Putting your food on a salad plate instead of a dinner plate, is something that works for me. Also, when I go out to eat; I will cut my meal in half and bring home the other half in a 'doggy bag' and eat it the next lunch or supper time. It 'helps' if you can get family starting to eat healthy again or for the first time. They might balk; but, just keep trying. Sometimes a granola bar (soft or crunchy) gives you that sweetness you might have the urge to eat instead of sitting down with a box of chocolates. Some of us will buy a bag of chocolates and take only one a day to feed that craving. Just have to make sure you put the chocolates back in the cabinets. Exercise is also key. You can do it! Make sure you ask your MD what caloric intake you should try to stay within to 'lose' weight. Normally the 1100 - 1300 calories a day, is for 'maintaining' your weight. Just try to get in all forms of foods from the group of foods. Proteins, carbs, sugar, salt, etc. Read labels on the sides of boxes of food. I plan out my day ahead of time; and then go back and readjust if need be. For me, this makes it easier to do; and, then 'if'' we plan on going out to eat I can readjust what I might normally eat for the restaurant food. Most large chain restaurants will put the caloric amount on the menu (or you can fid most online here).

I'm back 'on the wagon' to make sure I don't have another weight gain. Was so disappointed that I had put on 5lbs yesterday at weigh-in time; although my muscle weight had gone up and my fat % has gone down; but, still that scale made me upset. Nurse/MD said yesterday that I was one of her most successful clients on her books. So that made me feel better. Now, I'm back on my totally caloric intake plan; so maybe I will lose what I have gained, plus some. Been a stressful past few weeks for DH and me - although that is really no excuse. Went over my caloric intake and one or two days I think I 'grazed' all day. Not good to do either. Even 'if' I tracked every bite.
Before lunch yesterday I went to Belk's to find a couple of tops to go with some slacks I have; found 2 on sale; also looked at a 'fur-like vest' but did not buy it; went back after lunch and they had sold it. I figured it would have been too short-waisted for me (anyway) ... or that is what I kept telling myself. I was so disappointed; but, found a pair of off-white skinny jeans in my size (at the moment a 12 - USA).

Janetr - and any others who are struggling with the idea of weights/exercise/languages/new experiences. Baby steps, baby steps, baby steps.
I never would have thought I would be doing any of this. I used to despise all exercise, apart from dancing, tennis and swimming. I hated gyms because I can't stand ambient music. Grrrrrr! My husband coaxed me on to the machines. I was obese. I only did a tiny bit because I was afraid of over exerting myself. :laugh: I started on the dumbbells after reading about it on this thread. Certainly didn't think it was me at all. Started with tiny ones. Liked the difference it made to my arms. Yeah! Now I can hardly believe how much I have worked up to!
The confidence I have gained over these more than three years has translated itself into other areas. I published my book, I lost a long term crippling phobia over music in restaurants etc and I have gained so much more control over my life and my choices and self discipline that I hardly recognise myself. I am proud of myself, without feeling guilty about it, for the first time in my life. I attribute this transformation to getting a grip on my weight and health, with the help of my husband and you wonderful women.
So, all you new ladies who are just starting out, take just one baby step today, like walking a little bit further than normal, and you never know where you will end up. Success breeds success, so take a step you know you can succeed in and don't aim at perfection.
My mantra is -
DON'T LET THE PERFECT BE THE ENEMY OF THE GOOD.

Cheri - very proud of you for finally putting your own needs, health and other wise, at the top of your priority list. It seems to be a trait in women to neglect ourselves while caring for those around us. We are very happy to have you as a part of this amazing group.
Teri you are such a giving, loving addition here. How would we all manage without your daily hugs? Thanks for sharing your compassionate soul. By the way, that picture was taken from a lookout point that had a chest high guard rail around it.

It rained really hard here early this AM. Lots of branches knocked down off the pine trees. Just hoping none of the large, large oaks fell at my mom's. Will go down on Friday to visit her in the nursing home and check in on the house.

Heather thank you so much for the encouragement. I'm going to give it a try. I'll start slow and easy. It took me two years to talk myself into water aerobics becaue I'm deathly afraid of water and can't swim. Now I'm in the pool several days a week and love it. I have no weights or dumbells of any type so will research a package for weaklings. In the meantime maybe I can try starting with some light weights at the YMCA. I'm the same age as you, and tell myself I can do this. I too have gained a new self-esteem. It's a great feeling.

Miriam - thanks for understanding about my sour face. I keep trying to hide behind a smile, but it doesn't always happen. I will keep trying to smile.
Janetr - years ago, while in physical therapy for a car accident, the therapist told me to start with a can of soup in each hand. Then graduate to a bottle of gatorade, etc. Whatever you can handle. It doesn't have to be anything expensive, just be conscious of your body mechanics/form. Now, after doing 10 more pushups at the counter, I need to take myself and my ice pack to the Nurse's station to watch a "town hall" meeting about our family of health clinics. I'll try to catch you all later. And thanks for sharing back the hugs ! That makes my day MUCH happier ! ! !0 -
Cathy from Canada: Welcome to a great group of supportive women. Barbie is right. There are women here with all sorts of heartbreaking challenges. Stop by regularly to give and get support. We typically start each new month with goals. My first goal is always log every bite and swallow. It is a good cornerstone.
Rori: My family has been worried about my mental faculties, too. I recently discovered that I'd been taking an acid reflux medicine that has been linked to alzheimers. Not taking that ever again. Look at your dh's meds or have him review them with his doctor. There might be a cause of trouble there. :flowerforyou:
Kim: I get the WW fudge bar sometimes, too. It is 110 calories. Its biggest asset is that it is automatically portion controlled. I can't add "just a little." :flowerforyou:
Janetr: Your experience at DEN was awful. They could use a good letter of complaint for their thoughtless and rude treatment. I'm happy you're home and getting back to your enjoyable routines. :flowerforyou:

Cheri: If you've been taking calcium supplements, I'd recommend taking a look at how much calcium you're taking. I recently had a high calcium reading and made some big changes in my use of supplements. I was taking Citracal calcium plus D3. I had calcium levels high enough that my doctor said they could cause a heart attack. It isn't an evil product, but I was taking too much of it. Then she went on a month long vacation and left me dangling. I cut way back on the Citracal, increased the D3 and asked for another blood test. My levels were just fine for the second test. I've since found another doctor. :flowerforyou:

1. Log every bite and swallow.
2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on flexibility and back strength.
3. Have fun every day.
4. Drink at least three glasses of water daily, preferably more!
5. Monitor sleep. Try to average 7 or more hours of sleep nightly.
Goals
1. Find a place I can learn to fall without getting hurt once my doctor says it is ok to try.
