What Do You Think of the "Free to Be Hairy" Movement

It's a movement because shaving is currently a societal norm in "western" culture and to go against a societal norm takes chutzpah. The hair itself is no biggie. My beautiful and fashionable grandmother and mother never shaved their pits but at that time that was the norm.1

Not a fan, but to each their own. Do what makes you happy. I wouldn't find it particularly attractive on someone I was interested in and it would make me question cleanliness. I watched a special one day and it explained how many parasites and how much bacteria can cling to one single human hair and I was horrified. I've shaved everything ever since. Additionally, hair trap bacteria and moisture which creates odor. For me, it's more about caring for one's self than anything else. Why go through so much trouble doing hair and makeup, dressing nice and then refusing to remove hair? Also, body hair smacks of masculinity as men tend to grow much more hair than women. If a women doesn't remove underarm hair, why get rid of the mustache that sometimes grows or maybe that random chest hair? I don't like hair on my body as a man so, for me personally, I wouldn't necessarily want it on the woman I'm with.

Ooh, yes, that one too. So many of my early boyfriends were into getting to do things "first" and in retrospect it's like, "Dude, much like in the comments section, it doesn't *kitten* matter who got here first." There's a huge fear of women who are in control of their sexuality, and it shows in how we treat the women who outspokenly are.3 -
I was raised in the Hippie era. I think it's a personal choice. Wouldn't affect my life whatsoever. I'm not allowed to date anyways. Hairless, Hairy, Bald, Brazil, trimmed, waxed, whatever. I'd be sporting a bright red handprint on the back of my bald head if I looked to long.4

I, too, think people don't care. I know i don't. I have a family, bills, and about 10,000 other things to care about before thinking about caring what a stranger does with his/her hair. This feels like one of those things that is trying so hard to be a movement, but isn't getting traction because people are pretty much "meh" over it all.
don't get me wrong, i am sure there are people criticizing. You can find critics for literally anything. I'm just saying that, to me, it seems like the vast majority are not up in arms over it.0 -

I think that it is a bit of a visual norm in our society, if eventually enough women had leg and under arm hair for an extended period of time, one would not find it odd at all. It is like in the 60s when some guys began to grow their hair long, they were labelled hippies, or oddballs, nowadays, it doesn't matter. Guys have long hair, shaved heads and everything in between. Long beards used to be looked at as completely weird and ugly, now every other guy has a long beard. Guys had not had long beards for decades and decades!
it's just fashion. The shaved armpits, have been a regular women's fashion for a long time now. Maybe that will change, who knows? If enough of the younger generation, actresses, and singers stop shaving, in 10-15 years it will be weird to shave.
Its already very common in France and Europe to leave underarm hair.1 -

If you want to shave, go ahead. If you don't, then don't. The only thing that irks me I guess is that some people say that women who shave only do so because society says we have to. Nope, I choose to.2

Of course you should do what you choose to do. And no one should make assumptions about your motives.
And no one should assume that women who don't shave are dirty or smelly. And Jim Carrey shouldn't puke on them.1 -
Sometimes I shave. Sometimes I don't. Depends on the season, my general mood, and my energy levels. Fortunately, if others don't find it attractive then that pretty easily identifies people who are probably too high-strung for me to want to be with.
Sometimes I consider dyeing it, though.

i don't shave because a. im lazy b. i don't care c. it use to really get irritated a lot and was annoying
if someone is bothered by it they are obviously not someone i want to be around just another easy way to filter thru people to get to the ones i wanna know4 -

Fine with me. I personally do. Well... not shave, but electric trimmer the hair off.0 -
Do whatever you want, it's your body. I don't have to like it, and I wouldn't lol. But my opinion doesn't matter, so no-shave away!1

Might I add just because people see a good reason to shave or feel better doing it.. Does not mean we are not laid back and care free.. All of that. I don't identify beauty by such remedial defenitions. If everyone I knew grew out allll body hair and were happy.. Then by all means thats cool too. Does not hurt me. But here I would be lonely and uncool shaving and waxing lol.0

I'm completely fine with whatever anyone wants to do with their own hair. I do not like having body hair & I do everything I can to get rid of it. I am diligent with my epilator. My husband is about average in body hair for a man & does not shave anything but his face & that's fine--his body, his hair, his choice. That applies to everyone.0

The main problem I see from this "hippy movement", are comments from people out in public in regards to odors.
Like I said, we all know some people don't bathe, or wear deodorant. And some people don't like to inhale dirty *kitten* smells from people, I, being one of them.
Rude or not, I always make comments so the culprit can hear. And like most, they get butthurt or offended for being a dirt bag.
Kind of like those emo kids who cut themselves. You stare at them, they get upset, and go home cry and cut some.
I think it's all about attention anyhow, but that is just ones mans opinion.2
