May total to date – 35.15

Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Recover from Boston and Flower City. Build Base. Start training program for Rochester Marathon Recover from injury, return to running.

Today's notes – As a runner, I have two modes for dealing with injury - denial and hypochodria. I'm in hypochondria mode right now.

This morning my sore right hip abductor was a little more sore than yesterday morning, but not as sore as Friday morning after running Thursday evening. I dithered between running or making this a rest day. By 4 PM, with only about 3500 steps for the day, I decided to go run. The idea was to get between 3 and 4 miles, or less if the leg complained too loudly. Because I ran on roads yesterday, I drove over to a local college to run on the soft track surface.

There was already a group using the track. I didn't see what all they were doing, but part of it was training with starting blocks, and they were using all the lanes for the part of the track they were on. Sigh. So I went out and ran a loop around campus, mostly on asphalt. Either my leg is better, or the surface on campus was friendlier than the road surfaces yesterday, or a little of both; when I got back to my car at just past 3 miles, I felt up for a bit more. The group on the track was winding down, so I took a loop of the track, then a loop of the parking lot back to my car again. Quit at just past 3.5 miles because the leg indicated it was time to quit.

3.5 miles is almost long enough to be called a short run. This is progress.

Non-injury observations: It was sunny and 70° F (21° C) on my porch when I left home. That was warm enough that I ran in a singlet, and it felt pretty good. I see that my heart rate was a little higher than I'm used to for a run at the pace I took; I might be seeing the effect of the weather, or the lingering effect of dealing with injury, or a bit of both.

I'm beginning to think I've turned the corner on recovery. I'll take tomorrow as a rest day on general principle, having run two days in a row for the first time since getting into PT; but I see a path to getting back to running 4 or 5 days a week. I might have to travel that path more slowly than I'd like, but for now I'm content to be going in the right direction.

January 1, 2016 Resolution Run 7.5 mile (Mendon, NY) finished in 53:58

Got in 11.5 miles with a friend this morning, his first long run following the Pittsburgh marathon (as his legs didn't do quite as well as mine after his recovery period), taking a pretty hilly route, but keeping the pace pretty moderate. Ended up cutting the run slightly shorter than expected as my folks happened to be in town and we were meeting up for brunch before they headed off to the airport this afternoon. Ended up deciding not to go to the Lightning/Penguins game 5 tonight, but am snagging a game 7 ticket for Thursday in case the series reaches that point (as I went to a few game 7s of last years' playoff run and loved the atmosphere).

    5/1 - 26.2 miles (Pittsburgh Marathon - 3:08:25 - 7:11/mile, ran as bib #666 in full devil costume, got a BQ)
    5/5 - 6 miles
    5/9 - 15 miles
    5/10 - 6 miles
    5/11 - 3 miles
    5/12 - 2 miles
    5/13 - 4.5 miles
    5/14 - 6 miles
    5/15 - 3 miles
    5/17 - 11 miles
    5/18 - 10 miles
    5/19 - 11 miles
    5/20 - 2.5 miles
    5/21 - 7 miles
    5/22 - 11.5 miles

    Total: 124.5 miles
    Goal: 180 miles
    Remaining: 55.5 miles

    Next Races:
    Ironman 70.3 Augusta - September
    Chicago Marathon - October
    Ironman Florida - November

@_nikkiwolf_ - Congrads on the double 10K in two days. Definitely take a day or two off as you'll have some soreness and your muscles will be stronger (and faster) than ever after the effort.

@adrianchr92 - Definitely be careful around old steel mills (especially mini mills) as the tetanus risk from old leftover scrap metal puncturing your foot can be a bit ugly. Nice scenery though.

@pthyay Great job on the 5k - and you already passed your goal for the month too!

I've been waiting for a while for the Saucony Cortana 5 to come out, so that I could get some good deals on the previous model. Finally did a bit of google research today, and just found out the the Cortana was discontinued after version 4 :'(
On top of that, now it seems near impossible to find a pair of the 4s in my size anymore. Maybe I should have taken to hoarding them while I still had the chance!

I was away at a wedding all weekend, so I had a lot of catching up to do this morning.

    RE: The laundry discussion:
I definitely re-wear running clothes, sometimes. Like many others, I do the smell check. However, now that I will not run two consecutive days (because of my, probably unreasonable, fear of another overuse hip injury), I find myself having to do it much less often. I can also attest to the tech material/spandex/polyester holding smell after a while. As you probably know by now, my boyfriend is a rower. He only competes a few times a year, these days, and it is more of a workout/social thing, but, my god, do unis smell! No amount of soaking, vinegar, sanitary cycle on the washing machine get rid of the sweat and river smell.

Congrats all who ran, both to those who hit your goals and to those who missed them. We all have our good days and our bad, and just getting out there (and finishing) is over half the battle. You did it, and that is something to be proud of!

RE: Small Beat The Blerch discussion:
I REALLY wanted to do the race when it was in New Jersey last year. I am obsessed with Matt Inman. I seriously feel like we could be good friends. He is a (incredibly good looking) nerd with a weird sense of humor, and so am I (minus the incredibly good looking part). However, I was already committed to an 8K race in Delaware with friends that weekend. At the time, I figured it was no issue, I would just do it this year. Little did I realize that they are apparently moving it around the country every year. :disappointed: I had thought about doing the virtual thing, but I would so much rather run with Matt (even though he will blow me away), experience the Blerchs, couches, and cake first hand. Maybe one year it'll come back around, or I will be able to travel to attend one.

Speaking about traveling to attend a race, the Everglades Half Marathon has made it onto my race bucket list. I won't have the vacation time or funding to make my way to Florida this year, but maybe next year. I already tend to end up in Florida at least once or twice per year (I belong there, and I will reside there one day), so I figure I can plan a trip in November. Flat, fast, and through the Everglades - sounds like a fun run!

Dude, that's awesome. With how you're going, you'll definitely be ready for your longer races later this year.
