Today it was supposed to be a long run but I was feeling tired from yesterday and slept all day so did only around 6 km. Very very slow. Now I go to sleep again.

6/5 – 7.42 easy
June total to date – 20.74
Nominal Challenge Goal – 100 miles
Real Goals: Recover from injury to the point where running feels normal again. Stretch goal, recover to the point where I can run at race pace.
Today's notes – Got up earlier than my body wanted to get to church, and ended up needing a nap after church. Then as I slowly started getting ready to run, a thunderstorm arrived. Well. Check the weather, and it's a front coming through. Clear behind, then more thundershowers this evening. Okay. Got out to run a bit past 3:30, at a reasonable 70° F (21° C) with an unreasonable level of humidity.
The plan was to run between 7 and 8 miles, paying attention to how my recovering leg felt. It felt better than it has since Boston. For the first two miles, I had to pay close attention to feel that it wasn't totally normal. The minor sensation in the hip abductor didn't rise to the level of "ache" until 3.4 miles or so. I happened to get to 5 miles right at the top of a hill, and followed my protocol of taking a gel; the consequence of that was I was messing with storing the empty packet on the downhill instead of paying attention to form. My leg let me know that it was *not* totally recovered, and downhill running still requires some care. By the time I hit 6 miles, I knew I was going to go home the most direct way for about 7.4 miles, and not stretch it any closer to 8 miles.
The good: I was able to run a normal-length Sunday run, after running on Saturday. More of the run felt like normal running than like I was babysitting an injured hip abductor.
The bad: The leg didn't feel quite as good when I finished as it did yesterday. While I finished, and I was fine after stretching, the idea of running another mile on that leg seemed pretty dubious late in the run.
It's progress, and I'll take it. Feeling normal for more of the run than not really outweighed the uncomfortable humidity on the scale of enjoyment.

I made my long run a hilly route today to tackle a hill that, in my mind, I never thought I'd be able to run up, but I just wanted to see how far I could get. Anyway, I managed the whole thing, so I'm pretty proud right now, which is good seeing as the rest of the run was a bit of a disaster. My pace was all over the place (after having gotten so good at controlling a steady pace recently), I took a leaky water bottle, I kept getting harassed by two guys in a van who took to driving up and down the same road I was running to shout stuff at me, and I ended up with sunburnt KNEES. I mean, what the?! How did my knees get burnt when the rest of me was fine? Not sure what part of that run was more irritating
Oh, I and I registered for another half in the autumn!
2nd June - 3.53 miles
4th June - 3.41 miles
5th June - 7.12 miles
MTD - 14.06/80 miles

2nd Oct - Tonbridge Half Marathon
30th Oct - River Thames Half Marathon
9th April 2017 - Brighton Marathon7 -
@louubelle16 - Congratulations on conquering that hill! You can get a better water bottle, you can work on pace control (though some variability is to be expected on a hilly route), and you can do something to deal with the sun; but nothing can change the fact that you ran that hill.
Don't know what to say about the jerks in the van. There probably isn't a good thing to do to get rid of them, if they don't get bored and stop harassing runners.1 -

I have been thinking about the discussion generated by @7Lenny7 and how running can create family issues. It is not an easy topic, because running (especially long distance running) is inherently selfish and time consuming and not particularly conducive to healthy relationships. This is particularly true if you were not a runner at the beginning of the relationship and then became one well into the relationship.
A couple of years ago, I had a conversation with a hardcore runner (here on MFP) about this very subject. Both he and I had battled through some significant physical obstacles to become runners (he much more than me) and our spouses were struggling with the time demands made by our running and the obsessive drive we exhibited in our pursuit of miles. After one significant beotch session on my part about how my wife was giving me major shlt about my running, I clearly remember him asking me if running was the mountain that I was prepared to die on.
I thought about that for a long time and ultimately deliberately chose not to answer the question aloud. But I did not give up on my running and I am now going through my second divorce. I am not so naive to suggest that my running was the sole reason for the disintegration (after all I am a divorce lawyer), but my ultimate decision to keep devoting my priorities and my time to long distance running played a significant role in ending the marriage.
If your significant other is not a runner or is not willing to let your running take top priority from time to time, you will eventually find yourself in a tight spot... you may have to either risk continuing to damage the relationship or cut back on your running. You need to think long and hard about this because no matter what you choose, the price is expensive.
As I am moving forward, I have had to acknowledge that any future relationship of mine will either have to be with a runner or at least with someone who understands that when it comes to running I will most likely be a selfish, self-centered prlck and that she will lose out to my running more often than not... and she needs to be ok with that and support that.
And if I were to be an undeservedly lucky SOB, I would find myself with someone who is both. I think I have that... and she knows who she is.

I also made it out between thunderstorms today and ran in not too hot but super humid weather. It was like a rain forest. I ran 5.25 miles at a pretty slow pace. I had to walk up a tough and muddy hill - which reminds me @louubelle congrats on conquering your hill!
Upcoming race: Chase Corporate Challenge (3.5 miles) on Tuesday 6/73 -

@PoppetsMaster - I am also twice divorced, but I can't testify as to the impact of running because I didn't become a runner until well after the second divorce. I have thought about some of the issues you describe, though.
My first marriage hardly counts, because it was so short. My second marriage lasted 18 years as I tried to make it work. There is no way in he!! I could have become a runner while married to the mother of my daughter. But that's more about how she was and the dysfunctional dynamic of the marriage than about running. There was also no way in he!! I could have become a regular blood donor.
THBS, I know some runners who are married. Some of them are married to people who also run, some are not. I know at least one runner who married a non-runner while he was actively pursuing his running hobby. I know at least one couple who started running after getting married and having kids. And I know a lot of runners who apparently have functional marriages to non-runners, though I don't know the details of how they're functional. I've met a few of the spouses. It can work.
But dang, it's nice to be an empty nester when I'm training for a marathon. That pretty much sucks up all my free time. I don't know how the married marathon runners get it done. And it never would have happened if I'd stayed married, because running was not a mountain I would have been willing to die on. It might be that mountain now; but I'm not in the market for a third wife.5 -

My foot isn't playing fair yet. I think I get some biking in and give it more time to recover. Been a problem since April 24th.
Surgery in 37 days. I was hoping to capitalize on the time in the heat for cardiovascular gains. I'd like to still have a chance to place in my AG in November with a sub 2 time or least PR, 2:17:28 current.

@poppetsmaster interesting insight. I'm not a needy or jealous woman so I can't imagine being with someone who really enjoys something and giving them crap about doing it. But I have friends who are that way... he fishes too much, he runs too much, he golfs too much or whatever. I've thought a few times about a marathon but I know it's another full time job to train, I would be willing to put the time in vs being with my significant other, but I will not give up the time with Skip to do so. Of course the last almost 2 years my SO has been out of the country LOL.
I'll use my Dad and his racing again. We missed more weddings, birthday parties and special family events because he raced on weekends, seemed family was always pissed off at us. My mom supported him 100% because it was what he loved to do. I think with any successful relationship it's all give and take.5 -
Church, light lunch, nap, 7 mile run, 20 min stretching and rolling
Ran a 1.75 mi warmup (10:28 pace including a short walk to start). Started a new activity on my Garmin to mark off 5k for the Batten disease awareness virtual 5k I signed up for. 8:56 pace for the 5k Then I refilled my water bottle and ran 2.15 mi cool down (10:48 pace including a little walking and snapping a few pics).
It was 79 degrees but humidity dropped off to 48%. Still hot but feels different with lower humidity. I drove 15 min to run around a little lake. It's 1.75 miles around and the back half is all shade although the rest is full sun and it was sunny. Wore my hat. I felt well prepared and happy with how I handled the heat again.
@elise4270 Sorry your foot still isn't right
@louubelle16 Way to go on that hill!
Regarding family life and running... I was fit when I met my husband but quickly let myself go to pot. Spent 7 years very overweight and out of shape then 5 years ago turned myself back around. For some reason the running bothers my hubby more than anything else. He often praises me but just as often expresses concern and dislike of my running. He feels I'm in a special club that he's not part of. I don't even run that much and run alone. But have family and friends who run. I don't spend much time talking about running outside this forum. But it sure bothers him. He's into golf4 -
-
On the spouse subject.
I don't have a problem with DH doing whatever he wants to do. I like being alone. I like doing my thing. I think he enjoys his alone time as well. He indulges some running since I like to run and go to races. I run mostly after work, before he's off.
I think if I we're single and no kid (21)/pets at home, I'd run a lot more... and my house would be cleaner.5 -
Adding a few pics from today. Concrete trail but pretty scenery. There was a bunch of people. Most in the little creek that flows into the lake. It was torture watching them all lounging in the cool water while I was dying. Lol

Had a great day today celebrating our oldest daughter's 21st birthday, but still had time to get in a couple miles this morning.
I'm grateful that as a stay-at-home mom I have plenty of time to train that doesn't bother my family. My husband often does his work-outs later at night, but I might be worried if he was out running then. And I don't think either of us would be happy if my running (or his if he did so) interfered with being there for the kids. We'd make it work just for hanging out with each other--but we brought these 5 people into the world and it's our job to look after them until they're grown.

Thanks for the cheers on my 18k and pics, dear friends!
I gather the story behind the shoe tree is just random arty weirdness, which is nice.
No run today.
I'm supposed to be tapering before my participation in a relay team in an 80 km trail walk on Saturday/Sunday. (We'll all do about half of it.)
But I'm dying to run again. I don't have any soreness after the 18km yesterday.3 -
Hi I just started doing the couch to 5k program a couple weeks ago today being the start of week 3. I am pretty large still at 280lbs but have been doing ok with the walk runs so far. I was going to start a blog but couldn't figure out how and found this instead. I have ran 3 times this month so far as I run every second day and use the warm down starting today to hit the mile and a half mark. I am going to aim for 25 miles in the month of June. With my walk run today I am at 4.5 as I was not extending the warm downs before today hope it is ok that I am walk running and joined this group. A little about me I once weighed over 500 lbs and just recently got out of rehab where I found myself after overdosing on prescription drugs. I was clinically dead and brought back in the emergency room then in a coma for 4 days. While in rehab my wife left me and moved out with my daughter. While in rehab the only exercise we were allowed to do was walk with others. I made friends and walked with an avid runner and the rest is history. Running is a sanctuary for me I walked and lifted weights for a couple months before starting the 5k program. Looking to learn and share with others.9

@bradboughner5
Hi Brad, saw your other threads, welcome to the site and the group! Good luck on your goals and development!2 -
Hi friends! Four of the loudest gym miles ever this morning ... I encountered for the first time a gaggle of *men* at the gym - blah blah blah - and the gym music was jacked way up on 60s oldies music - consequently, my rock music was blaring to cover it all up. I'm hoping for three outside miles this afternoon - they should be nice and quiet, partially because of the hearing loss I probably caused myself this morning.
3 -
@bradboughner5 - Wow, that's a story.
I started ... moving about 8 years ago, when I was unhappy (disgusted, really) with pictures from Christmas morning with the kids - at how big I was and felt. I still do a run/walk, but have only started calling myself a "runner" in the last couple years.
I'm so sorry that you've had to go through what you have, but I'm glad you've found an outlet in running, and glad you've found your way to us. I look forward to journeying with you as you make your way back to wherever you want to be.3
