I really enjoy reading on the forums. There are a lot of knowledgeable posters here. So, I have a questions for those knowledgeable people
If a person doesn't have a heart rate monitor, how can one estimate how many calories they burn from cycling? Is there a formula that you can plug some variables in to?
For running it's pretty common to see: (Body weight in lbs X 0.62) per mile. Does a formula like this exist for cycling? I've heard that 25 Cal/Mile is a conservative estimate.
I'm a 36M, weigh 260 lbs, and am 6' 0". My rides average about 13-14 mph. Usually about 10 miles per day through the week and a single ride of ~25 miles on the weekend.

I'm sure there are some formulas somewhere. The calorie burn rates on MFP I feel are exaggerated. I think Strava rates might be closer to the real rate. It is hard to tell on a bike because one rider going 15mph it might be a leisure ride while another it is a hammerfest. I like to use a HRM and stay in certain intensity zones.0 -
It was too dang hot yesterday. 96F 69% humidity, heat index of 106. I only did 11 miles. That was enough.

93 miles done last week, then dropped my baby at the bike spa for some beauty treatments. Bath, wax, new tape on horns and aerobars, new cables, etc. Now she's almost too pretty to ride, (but not quite)
20 mile shakedown done yesterday. Have a 50 miler for tomorrow as a last long ride before tapering until HIM race day next Sunday.2 -
@Djproulx How much did all that minus the bars cost you? I need to give my old mountain bike a tune up with new cables and a complete cleaning as well.0

My wattage at Spin class is usually in the 200 or 300 hundred range. Today, I hit the high 700s !!!1

Riding your bike should not make your joints hurt, unless you have other underlying health issues. I would suggest looking to how your bike is adjusted. Is your seat high enough? Is your seat in the correct position forward/back in relation to your pedals? Are your handlebars adjusted correctly? Do a search on YouTube for how to adjust these to fit you better.
I agree ... the only reasons cycling should hurt your joints is if you don't have the bicycle set up correctly or if you're pushing too hard a gear for the terrain.

Really good, quick ride - plenty of headwind but for once it didn't bother too much

I finally got the right cleats for my pedals, and installed them on the matching new shoes today. The next step was nearly killing myself walking down the stairs (those cleats as well as the soles of the bike shoes are slippery!).
Then I practiced clipping in and out a bit in the cellar where I keep my bike. It's small enough that I can put my hands agains the wall on either side, so it seemed a good place for this exercise. Of course, once I had the first shoe clipped in, the lights turned off (annoying energy-saving timer), and I couldn't get my foot out of the pedal! Sheesh, for a few minutes I really thought I'd have to limp-drag-hop my bike over to the light switch, until it occured to me I could just take off the shoe...
Eventually, I figured out how to get the shoes back out of the pedals, but it's a struggle, I'm not very confident in my ability to do it reproduceable or quickly. I think I'll spend a bit more time in the cellar tomorrow, and then venture out into the parking lot when it's dark and no one will see my falls.

@_nikkiwolf_ There should be a screw that adjust the force needed to kick out. I had my LBS adjust and fit my cleat position. I don't think they even charge for this service.
It does take some time to adjust!0 -
@Elise4270 Thank you for the good advice! I found the screw. Didn't help, though - on both sides, the screw's hole is rounded out, so I can't manage to turn it. One of the side-effects of buying a used bike...
I still have to find a good LBS. I went to one a few month ago, but they were so unhelpful I'm not willing to go back. Judging by my first experience with them, they'd tell me to make an appointment for the adjustment and probably inform me two weeks later that the pedals can't be salvaged and I should replace the entire drivetrain...
There's supposed to be another shop nearby, but I ran by the adress a few times now and still haven't spotted it. Sooner or later I will have to increase my search radius to villages further away; until then, I guess I'll just try to adjust to whatever the current release force setting of the pedals is.1 -

Well that's too bad the they were unhelpful! I had an off brand used bike and mine never tried to sell me anything I didn't ask about. You Tube should be great help in the meantime.0 -
Re: walking in cleats - you should be able to get cleat covers that are rubber clip-ons with treads, which gives you an awful lot more grip than the cleats alone. For example:
