September (2016) Running Challenge

Congrats @Ohhim ! Spectacular!
@instantmartian That sounds hilarious and hard. I can only imagine how difficult and awkward it would be to run carrying a 12.5 lb pumpkin. Well done!
@Mom3over40 Thanks, that could explain the difference. I just know yesterday and last Sunday I did 12 miles per Garmin, but Strava converted it to 11.9 both times when it transferred over. I'm new to Strava, so I'll try to figure out where it shows the monthly mileage at the end of September and see if it has caught up.0 -
I guess I have a ton of catching up to do since I have been pretty much absent for the last week and a half. Had a very good visit with my mom. I took her home on Saturday and drove back on Sunday, so this weekend was a lot of time in the car. In a way, I am glad to be back at work and back to "normalcy". Last week was my peak mileage weak for my half marathon training (53 miles). I capped it off with a pretty spectacular run yesterday before I headed home. It was a beautiful day in Pittsburgh. I had planned to head out at 7AM before meeting my brother for breakfast, but when I walked out the door it was sooo cold! I would have loved to have gone for a run in the 48F temps, but I only had shorts and a singlet with me. That, coupled with the fact that my mother had no food in her house so I was going to be running fasted (following a very low calorie week due to my new braces) made me decide to wait until after breakfast for my run. Turned out to be a great idea because I hit a bike trail on my way out of town that was truly fabulous to run on. 16 mile fast finish run felt like a dream. Now I am going to start my taper. No chance of hitting goal this month thanks to the week I spent babying the hamstring, but that's okay because I know that was necessary if I want to do well in my halfs on October 9th and 16th. I think I can PR at least one of them, but I am pretty sure that my goal of a sub 1:40 is not going to happen. I feel like I am kind of plateauing on my gains in speed. I guess being nearly 45 will do that to you...2

Hi all. I haven't run the last 2 days. Life got in the way big time. My Mom passed away Sunday morning while Skip and I were trying to get to her in Florida. I probably won't make my goal, though we both packed running gear.

@kristinegift Congrats on the distance PR. You are right on my heels. Excellent, keep it up.
@RunRachelleRun Congrats on your weekly mileage PR.
Awesome job on your HM @KatieJane83
@RunRachelleRun strava always rips me off on mileage. That's why I always try and end my runs at .03 per my watch
Great job @ceciliaslater
Way to hit your goal @RespectTheKitty
Bummer that you have to cancel your 5K @MobyCarp Way to volunteer.
Great job at your Ironman @Ohhim I think Chattanooga had their IM on Sunday as well.
@skippygirlsmom Aweee I am so very sorry about your mom. My condolences.

@skippygirlsmom - So sorry to hear about your mother. I am glad you were able to spend some time with her in recent weeks. Also, good that you packed running gear--maybe getting out there for a short run will help both you and Skip to cope with the loss.1

I had a great time at the obstacle course on Saturday. Our team made it dead last in our group, but we wanted to cross the finish line together.
Back to my regular routine today. Did a dreadmill run this morning (because it's too bloody cold to run when I do my workouts now), it was freezing out there and I don't have the gear to run in those temps yet. Maybe someday I'll be properly equipped.
Have a great day everyone!

@skippygirlsmom My condolences...0

9/1 - 4 miles. Weather was beautiful! Had to cut it short because I hit snooze too many times.
9/2 - Unplanned rest day. Apparently yesterday's snoozing was due to impending illness. First virus of the new school year.
9/3 - 8.09 mile group run. Again, beautiful weather! Plus, virus seems gone.
9/4 - Normal rest day. Way overate at family picnic.
9/5 - 5.06 miles.
9/6 - Bodypump class, followed by Abs/Core class.
9/7 - 4.03 hot, humid, sticky miles...summer is not over yet!
9/8 - 5.2 miles at Trek/treadmill class.
9/9 - Managed to turn off my alarm and oversleep by 2 hours = no run or spin class
9/10 - 9.4 mile group run. Another gorgeous morning for a run!
9/11 - Insanely busy church/family activity day.
9/12 - 4.7 miles. Getting spoiled by this weather.
9/13 - Life got in the way.
9/14 - 5.08 miles...seriously, this weather is fantastic for running!
9/15 - 4.06 miles. Legs felt like bags of wet sand.
9/16 - Spin Class. Missed it the last two weeks, so it felt difficult in a good way.
9/17 - 3.33 miles. Short run before race tomorrow.
9/18 - 10.15 miles. Capital Pursuit 10-Mile. Love this race! "Serious" runners for the most part, so it tends to be fast. Weather was beautiful, if a bit hot the last two miles. Time about what I expected based on my training level the last few months. Loved it!
9/19 - Rest day. Very sore.
9/20 - 5.05 miles. Beautiful morning.
9/21 - 4.02 humid, sticky miles. Someone forgot to tell Mother Nature that summer's over!
9/22 - 5.02 miles. First day of fall...77° and humid at 5:00 a.m.!
9/23 - Spin Class.
9/24 - 4.75 miles. Was supposed to be 11 mile group run at 6:00, but family life got in the way. By the time I went out, it was 89°...just didn't have it in me.
9/25 - Rest day.
9/26 - 5.02 miles. Gorgeous morning! Fall seems to have arrived!

Just because I'm a data junkie I went back and found a 12 mile run from early in the training cycle. May 8th I ran 12 miles at a 9:59 easy pace at 61 degrees. Average HR was 147 with the final 4 miles being 150-156-160-163. Today's run was 66 degrees at a similar easy pace. Average HR 131 with last 4 miles being 133-131-137-136. Granted I put in 1000 miles since that May run, but that is a pretty significant gain in fitness. It takes some time see the difference, but the principles & results of the 80/20 running system are pretty remarkable.
That's super impressive right there. I had similarly amazing results from following the 80/20 plan and I recommend it to just about anyone who is willing to listen. That said, I still adhere to the plan and I am really not noticing much improvement in my speed of late. I ran my half marathon PR (1:43:56) in October 2014. I will be running the same half in two weeks and I am really not sure that I will be able to run much faster than that. Maybe I have to face the reality that at some point, age becomes a limiting factor. I guess I will find out in two weeks...
I just spent about 30 minutes perusing the thread activity from the last week. I wish I could comment on everyone's amazing accomplishments, but that would take forever! But I do want to say:
@Orphia - You are amazing! Such great progress in a relatively short amount of time!
@kristinegift - Fabulous week of running!
@MNLittleFinn - Congrats on the HM PR! I also think that you would be fine to run a full if that is what you want, but I do agree with @5512bf that you will really need to focus on slowing down your training runs. If you haven't already picked up a copy of "80/20 Running", you should definitely do so prior to starting to train for a full.
@Ohhim , @KatieJane83 and anyone else that raced this weekend, congrats on the outstanding performances!

@skippygirlsmom - I just now read you post. So sorry for your loss.1
-
@lporter229 That's on my reading list for the winter actually0
-
@KatieJane83 Very jealous of where you ran - looked like an absolutely beautiful place to run...1
-
@MNLittleFinn that's great about the race distance. I ran a 5 k that seemed short, even others around me mentioned it was short. I'll have to go check if it was sanctioned. Then I have a 24:44 5k.not that it matters when I'm still mastering walking
@skippygirlsmom Blessings and condolences to you, Skip and family. Healing wishes your way.1 -
Hey everyone, been a bit absent over the past couple of weeks with a knee injury that should hopefully clear up just in time for my half in 2 weeks time. My aim for my half is essentially to finish without making the knee worse. I've managed a 5k so far hoping to get a 10/11k in at the weekend so I at least cover half distance before the race. I did manage a 10 miler before the injury (drunken spin on a sticky dance floor) so I'm not as nervous as I would have been without that.
I have been stalking the boards so many races going on with great times, everyone's been rather busy. Wish everybody with injuries speedy returns (although not too speedy) and condolences to @skippygirlsmom.

@skippygirlsmom Aw, hugs. Very sorry to hear about your mom.1

Wow - I don't check in for a weekend and miss 125 posts!! Unfortunately don't have time to read those just now, so herewith my quick update.
Just attempted to go out for 10k, and unfortunately got a really bad stomach just 15minutes in. Still learning this fuelling thing - guess it's not OK for me to have a small chocolate (snickers) bar an hour before my run! I wouldn't have thought twice on the bike, but my stomach has proved quite sensitive to what I eat and how much I drink before running so going to have to keep trying!
Anyway, I did 2.5K before I had to quit so inching closer to my revised September goal but thanks to today I will probably just miss out. The good news was, on reflection, I remembered 10 weeks ago I could barely run 500m continuously let alone 2.5K - today I felt like I was just warmed up so that was a nice positive I'm trying to hang on to!

@skippygirlsmom So sorry to hear about your mom. My condolences to you and Skip.1

I'm way behind on commenting but based on what I remember reading.....
@skippygirlsmom I am so very sorry for your loss. ***hugs***
@ariceroni Good luck with the bone scan and high five for beating anorexia!
@Orphia Amazing transformation! Your two running pictures literally look like 2 different people. You look inches taller in your after photo too :-D
I'll update my log in a sec.....3 -

One America Half Marathon 5/6/17
Trying out the new shoes with a long run. Only 3 hours sleep after working all night, 85 degrees and no water. Plan was to take planned walking breaks if running slower than 12 minute miles. Had to take first break after 3 miles, then ran well until mile 8.....3 walk breaks....parched with thirst...ran/walked the rest of the distance... finished in 2:27 for 12 miles..
Wanted to run 14 but after running 12, I stopped at a water cooler ( it felt like an oasis in a desert), and was done afterward.
The new shoes felt heavier with a narrower toe box...going to try it on a short run in a couple of days. Only slightly sore today. Next and last long run, packing water.0 -
Had to take a rest day today because my hamstrings were still sore from the ten mile walk. Wouldn't you know it, it's been a super stressful morning at work. Damn, I wish I had some running endorphins.0

9/23 - 4 mile run/.7 mi walking plus super busy/active day
9/24 - 3 mile walk
9/25 - Rest day
9/26 - 3 mi run/.8 mi walk/another 10 min walking.......still need to strength train later
Goal: Not be in pain
It was just cool enough this morning to sting my eyes and make them water (uppers 50s I think) but still humid enough that I got plenty sweaty and my glasses kept fogging up :-p I had a rough 3 miler with 2-3 significant walk breaks. 10:29/10:36/9:18. I finally got going good the last mile. Wore my new (rechargeable) blue LED light belt in front and some blinking red lights in back. I felt like a police car. Totally loving my new gear! Tomorrow we're supposed to dip into the 40s so I'll run again most likely, even though I haven't been doing consecutive days lately. I'm still trying to play it safe with only 3 short runs per week and see what aggravates the muscle behind my knee.3 -

My students' attitudes and behaviors today are making me want to run really bad, but between my quads and my cold, that's just not going to happen.1

As a fellow data junkie, I can't believe I somehow missed your original post @5512bf This is awesome. I am also following the 80/20 plan. I guess I'll have to intentionally run at the same pace and distance in a few months just so I can gather some comparable heart rate data lol. I don't think that would have occurred to me; since I'm running primarily by heart rate, I would only see a difference in pace otherwise.
Thanks for posting this @lporter229 Good luck with your half!1
