For me it will be running my first 26.2 on my 10th wedding anniversary. Second half of the year is a big blank for now, the marathon, and recovery from it, will be a major factor in me deciding the rest of the year.
Sounds like 2017 will be a great year for you!
My major goal, as of now, is to run a spring marathon. I'd also like to run at least one half marathon before the marathon and, if I'm able to continue running my long runs at the pace I've been running on those longer runs, I should PR a race or two. Ideally, my spring marathon will be Flying Pig. I'm also interested in a small local half marathon MLK weekend here in a few weeks. However, all those goals will only be possible if I'm healthy/uninjured. Last week when I had my meltdown about my shin, I had pretty much written off being able to run in January and was highly doubting a spring marathon. Since then, things have turned around a little but I know the shin still needs to be addressed. I have an appointment with a new doc on 1/6 (cancelled the other one) and I'm hoping they will help me construct a plan to help the shin pain get better that doesn't include stopping running for an extended period of time. The second half of the year will depend on the first half, but I'm hoping it will be more of the same.

12/27 – 5.28 warmup + speed work
December total to date – 148.90
Nominal Challenge Goal – 150 miles
Real Goals: Finish transition to healthy running. Use Club Nationals as a learning experience on managing air travel to a race. Build a base toward Boston training. Avoid re-injury
Today's notes – Today was the first indoor speed work session of the winter. 2 mile warmup, then the assignment was 4 x 800m at T pace, with 200m recovery, plus 6 x 60m strides, jog between. I set a slow T target, 51 seconds per 200m lap, or 3:24 for 800m. Actual results on the 800s were 3:18, 3:19 and got confused so continued to 4:11 for 1000m, 3:21, and 3:22. Most of the inaccuracy was in running the first 200m of each 800 faster than target pace.
Garmin reports a total of 5.28 miles, which is what I'm using for distance tracking. I ran to 2.01 miles on Garmin for the warmup, which understated the track distance; but Garmin overstated the track distance for the speed work by about the same amount, so it's good enough. Extreme accuracy is not necessary here, and I'm off by a minor fraction of a mile.
I omitted the 2 mile cool down because the last 2 runs were a bit longer than planned, and I'd like to run 6 miles with a group tomorrow instead of 5 on my own. Just another day in the first week of marathon training, which is labeled Week 16 by my plan.
I notice that if I'd run a 2 mile cool down, I'd have hit my nominal monthly goal today. That's okay, I'll hit it tomorrow. I've also seen a lot of chatter about annual goals and running the year. I didn't set an annual goal at the beginning of 2016, but I thought in the back of my mind that I'd blow past the year in miles. That didn't happen. 2016 miles to date, 1920.83. I guess I needed to stay healthy to run the year in miles, instead of my actual result of having run 16 miles in October.
So, 2017 goals? No numerical goal. The major goal is to stay healthy. If I can do that, the numbers will be there. And to get there, I need to run Boston and finish in good shape. Memo to self: Running the marathon fast is not the point.

@mobycarp your memo to yourself was a great reminder to me that I need to do that same thing... it is something I'm already trying to pound into my own, stupid, head. I figure if I start telling myself now that I'm not going to run 26.2 fast, I might actually believe it enough to pace myself better in 6 months.0
-
No running for me tomorrow - we're going home! 10 nights in a hotel bed, I'm ready for my own bed! We will be back to the clinic for another week in January for surgery.
2016 was my first year to run every month for a whole year so my 2017 goal is to do it again! I've had several minor "injuries" but none knocked me out for long. I thought about run/walking the year (2017 miles) but I didn't even run/walk 1000 in 2016. So we'll just see what happens.
Thinking about a trail run Friday. Gosh I miss the great outdoors!5 -
We had freezing rain today so I ran on the treadmill since the roads were too slippery. For some reason my ticker isn't displaying properly so I didn't include it.
My running goals for 2017 are to work up to running about 6 days a week and try running a 10km race in May. I just finished a 5km learn to run program at the beginning of December so now I'm trying to build up my endurance and learn how to train for a longer distance without getting injured.

Nominal mileage goal: 100 miles
Real goal, get into the swing of Marathon training, and get used to doing 3 days a week of some strength/core while running 35+ MPW
Today's notes: Back in the training saddle again, after a long, lovely weekend with family. Put in 8 miles before getting the rest of the family up this morning. Run felt pretty good. HR ended up being a little higher than I'd like, but with an inch of fresh snow on the ground, covering ice, it made for some sliding in some spots. All i all though, good run, and happy I have the rest of the day to "rest" playing with my precocious 2 year old.0 -
12/1 - 5.35 miles on treadmill (Trek class)
12/2 - 5 miles. Pleasant for December, about 35°
12/3 - Bodypump class, then 2.25 miles on treadmill
12/4 - Planned rest day.
12/5 - 5.11 miles avoiding slippery spots.
12/6 - Bodypump class, then 2.3 miles on treadmill.
12/7 - 4 miles on the 'mill.
12/8 - 4.6 more 'mill miles (Trek class was full...so I had to run solo)
12/9 - Unplanned rest day.
12/10 - 2.3 miles on the treadmill, then Bodypump.
12/11 - 4.5 'mill miles.
12/12 - Rest day.
12/13 - Bodypump, then 2.25 miles on treadmill.
12/14 - 4 miles on treadmill.
12/15 - 5.3 miles on treadmill (Trek class). Hamstrings are SORE.
12/16 - Recovery day. Yesterday's run/class really beat me up. Hamstrings and hip hurt this morning.
12/17 - 2.5 'mill miles, then Bodypump.
12/18 to 20 - Nada. Dad in hospital with hiatal hernia, so no time to squeeze in a workout.
12/21 - 4 miles on treadmill, then short upper body weight workout.
12/22 - 5 miles on treadmill (Trek class). Lots of incline today.
12/23 - Holiday cleaning / prep day. Wife dictated no time for workout.
12/24 - 2.15 miles on treadmil, then Bodypump.
12/25 to 12/28 - Nasty upper respiratory virus = no running and minimal activity. Back to work today, but still sick. Yuck.
Hope you all had a Merry Christmas and got a chance to enjoy your favorite people, traditions and treats!1 -
@karllundy hope you start feeling better soon!0

Well, it looks like today might be my last chance to run this year. I will be too busy on Thursday and Friday with family obligations. Saturday will depend on what time I have to take my son home, but I'm hoping I can squeeze in a short run then. Sheesh. I'll be glad when December is over and I can get back to a somewhat regular schedule.0

No run today, but the weather was so gorgeous I went for a five mile walk with a friend. Along the river, across fields(more frosty and crispy than muddy), got a bit lost in one field so got directions from some guys heading back from bearing for a shoot. Quick stop for a cup of tea in a pub at the halfway point then back a bigger loop for a huge steak sandwich in another pub. Like a pub crawl without alcohol!!
Hoping for a seven mile run tomorrow morning.3 -

Hmmm...2017 goals? To run every month in 2017; finish the year with at least 1200 miles run and run a half marathon. Additionally, I will evaluate how I am feeling and doing about halfway through the year and consider training for a January 2018 marathon.
@katharmonic What a great running year! Nicely done!
@ddmom0811 Yuck, food poisoning is not fun! Hope your husband is feeling better.
@OSUbuckeye906 Glad your shin is feeling a little better. I hope the new doc is able to help.
@Orphia Nice headstand! I don't think I have ever done one...even when I was young and thin.
@MNLittleFinn You've got a big goal there for 2017. I'm looking forward to following your training.
@greenolivetree I bet you'll be happy to get home. Great job running every month this year!
@HonuNui I suppose if I repeated that enough times it would eventually roll of the tongue smoothly...maybe.
Have a fabulous rest of the day everyone!

@Ohhim @ddmom0811 sorry guys to hijack briefly the 3d, got a quick question for you
How different is cycling from Running from a nutritional point of view in your experience? I've got used to not drink or eat anything during long runs (even marathon I'd not too hot) being fine but my first.rides completely killed. Me!
Strava, fr630 and edge 820 also give me different cal estimates and I'm in trouble as I cannot underestimate
Thanks0 -
