Would like to join this group, I'm 55 and need to lose some wt!12

I am starting (getting serious folks).
January Goals~
-To log my food in every day this month.
-To go to bed with husband every night. I don't need to stay up! There is the recorder for gosh sake...
-Get to the pool twice a week, and MOVE!
That is all I shall do for January.

We got up at 4 AM this morning, out the door to the airport by 5:30 AM. Nasty snowy roads all on 30 Hwy to Portland Airport! Thank goodness in Portland is was just wet roads. Katla I waved to you as we drove by!!

So I changed my target weight to 179 (see my "personalized" scale in my picture). I changed my exercise to mostly sedentary but I will be exercising doing something 5 days a week for 30 minutes. I put my goal of 2 lbs a week. That put my calories at 1200 a day. I have done it before, so I kind of know what to expect. Time to use the small plates again! As long as I put fresh spinach on my plate daily, I can handle 1200 calories a day no problem. Also to portion control again. (I am a smart woman, I know what I need to do.....why I stopped was the stupid thing though...)

well has been a productive day... got to see my daughters house.. and Taliah gave me a tour of the upstairs, but I had to close my eyes and take my shoes off lol..it is a cute little Cape.. and they are doing some work on it.. painting, carpeting and such...I am very happy for them.. years of alot of work... but great.. then visited a few friends... so nice to just sit and catch up...
have one more day off.. so will clean and get ready for the week..3 -

Lenora: I don't make New Year's Resolutions either. :noway: Happy New Year! I hope your eyes are already feeling better. I agree that watching a pet in pain is about as difficult as watching your child in pain. :tear:
Karen in VA: Your goal to eat a pound of raw vegetables daily is intriguing. I piled some carrots on my food scale & found that it would take six large carrots to equal a pound. I'm way low on celery, so have no idea how much celery equals a pound. Good luck to you.
Rita: Perhaps you could hide your donations somewhere and zip them off to the charity of your choice while you are doing errands of a type your DH finds too boring to go along. :devil:
Kelly: I had very poor luck with goals to lose a particular amount of weight by some deadline. I had success with goals to eat a certain amount of calories per day coupled with goals to get in a certain number of minutes of active exercise. (CICO) I found that I could succeed by counting calories in and out every day, but that success didn't come on a predictable timeline & had many long plateaus along the way. Good luck to you.
Barbie: We have a trace snow on the dirt & lawn here, but it has melted on sidewalks. This is the kind of day that I slipped and broke my wrist. I think I'll be happy riding the trike in the garage. :ohwell:

My DSIL was hoping to come to our side of the mountains to spend time with her daughter and with us, but the roads are not good between our house and hers. I think she will delay her trip until closer to Super Bowl Sunday. Her husband loves to watch the game with his Son-in-Law in the Olympia area. The only thing about the Super Bowl that attracts me is the Budweiser Clydesdale commercial & I can find that online. Having a chance to spend some time with my DSIL is a huge plus. I hope things work out well for her trip west.

2. Cardio exercise at least 3 days a week. Work on strength and stamina.

I am SOOO over the holiday (eating-wise). Tonight is the last night. A friend of ours is coming by to see the decorations, her birthday was Thursday so I made some brownies for her. The next time I need to make something is when I make something to take to the library where we have our board meeting. Not sure when I'll get to that.

Lynette gave me a gift certificate to Academy sports. They are on the expensive side, but that was a really thoughtful gift. When she gave it to me, the first thing I said was "I know what I'm going to get. The webbed gloves that I use for the water aerobics are wearing out and I need new ones".
Went to Bi-Lo. Didn't know until yesterday that today was the last day for them to have soda on a real good sale so got some. The only one they had that Vince will drink was diet 7Up. So it's now down in our storage room. then went to WalMart since Vince needed me to pick up a prescription and then went to CVS. I got some vitamins that usually are $11 but they were B1G1, plus I used a $5, a $1, a $2 and another $2 coupon. After bowling tomorrow I'll go and take another $1 coupon that I got off the internet. Also got some toothpaste, for $1 we'll use it, and some canned soup at a good price for the soup kitchen. Came home and made the brownies. Just cut them up, I may give some to the library, not sure. I'll still need to make something for them. There aren't enough christmas cookies left to make it worth it, but I will give them whatever Vince won't eat (like the ginger cookies)
Volkswagon - welcome! Let me know how it goes giving up sugar. sugar is in so many of our foods.

You all sound like a great bunch to hang out with! I'm returning to mfp, and at the heaviest I've ever been. Lots of contributing factors, but nothing that can't be changed with commitment to exercise and clean eating. I'm 63, have a titanium shoulder (one of those contributing factors!), and a knee that's missing a lot of cartilage (ditto). I love tennis, and one of my goals this year is to better balance playing and taking care of the knee. I am about 35 lbs over where I would reasonably like to be, and getting rid of that weight will make the knee a lot happier. I'm newly retired and a new resident of Florida -- last year was a year of huge change! I am going to get back to recording the diet daily, and look forward to dropping in here for inspiration.6 -

Charleen – I know why you were hiding the flamingo umbrella; you were either going to keep it or send it to me since I am ‘so nice’. LOL! Where did you buy it?
Mary – Thank you, I’ll do that … I’ll look for it. I remember seeing her email address; maybe I did not look far enough down.
Carey – I went to the “Convenient Care” and got seen quickly. MD washed my eye out with enough water to drown a small child; then, he gave me the Rx I had needed. Opaque greasy cream – I had had it Rx’d to me before by my Ophthalmologist before and I was hoping that would be what I got. Told me to call him in AM to see if they could move up my appointment from mid-January. Put it in my eye when I got home; it is still blurry. But, not quite so much as last night and the night before.
I was told by my GYN, that ‘for me to lose’ I was going to have to get below 1000 calories per day. So he ordered me into a ‘weight loss program’ that is ‘high’ in protein; I’ve lost slowing since I have been in it; but, consistently. Down 40lbs to 160lb. The first 2 weeks, I lost 7lbs. Right now it seems like I am 'finding' and 'losing' the same 5lbs. I'd like for it to 'get lost'!
Margaret – No I don’t wear contacts; but had cataracts taken off both eyes about 3 years ago. wearing readers; but, had to get a little stronger ones because they skip from 2.00 to 2.50 and I needed the 2.25. I did not think they had readers in the Optical department; and even if I had don’t think I would have wanted to pay the price. I don’t know if I am straining my eyes by wearing readers that are stronger. I am supposed to contact Ophthalmologist in the AM. My DDnL#2 wears contacts and she says that she has had to get caught under her eyelid before and it drives her crazy until she can get them out, which sometimes takes awhile.
Barbie – I like your 'Nine Things to Give Up if You Want to be Happy'. I have a few friends and family members who could use it. LOL!
Allie – I agree with you and Margaret that doing your normal routine, until you get your ‘ducks in a row’ is a good idea. Maybe he ‘won’t expect it’.
Becca – I know what you mean when you ‘miss’ your sons as they leave home and go back to their posts. I feel the same way about Will, Tami, and Mallory each time we leave or they do. This last time that Louis went out he almost ‘cried’ in front of both sons when he had to say goodbye to him. He did well on the way home; but, lost it when he got here. We both cried for probably the better portion of an hour. It only made me miss Will more; because unless they come home when she has Spring Break, it will be a year from August before I see them again.
I use small plates when I cook, most of the time; it always makes me eat slower and chew more and it makes the plate ‘full’ and that way I don’t get too hungry between meals.
Katla – Like above, nursing eye and going to call eye doctor in the morning.
Besides what I posted before about the things I will do in 2017: Add read the Bible through again for the 3rd time. Each time using a different version. This year it will still be a ‘daily’ Bible; but, it will be a ‘study Bible’. B.I.B.L.E. = Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth. I hope to be as efficient as my oldest sister is about finding the perfect verse or story in order to help me do better.

Becca and anyone else who is considering going on a low calorie diet - don't.
Ever wondered why you couldn't stick to it in the past? Because what you are asking of yourself is not possible in the long term. Find a way to eat that you can enjoy for the rest of your life. It is not a fight. Food is a pleasure and should be enjoyed in a quantity that is satisfying and deeply pleasurable. Please don't set yourself the task of losing 2 lbs a week. That is unrealistic, unless you are very obese. 1 lb is plenty and that will slow down as you get lighter. This is for ever. And ever. Not a quick fix.
My advice is to significantly up your calorie burn with exercise and eat back your calories. That will give you plenty to satisfy you and you will not relapse again.
I am always surprised when people say they have stopped logging. I log every day, even though I have been at maintenance for three years. For me it is an essential tool.
Those of us who have kept the weight off long term have one thing in common - exercise. We do not starve ourselves on 1200 calories.
Eat the way you want to eat for the rest of your life.

I’m not going to respond to everyone as my time is limited but I love reading about what is going on with you and your goals. I’m not so much into goals but I am renewing my commitment to logging and eating right. I hate to admit that I have gained 15 pounds in the past year and those have to come off. As I look up the scale and see 200 just calling me that way, I’m screaming back, “NOOOOOOOOOOOOO!” I have to get a grip and now. As many of you know, I have spent unreal amounts of time at my friend’s house, cleaning, sorting, packing and preparing for the Estate Sale. It was a success but will do one more before I let a resale owner come in and take the rest away for a song. Hopefully after this week I’ll get my life back somewhat.
Ladies, I hope we all have the most wonderful year ahead! I wish you all health and happiness and hope to share many lost pounds with you all this year.

I took "progress photos" this morning. They weren't pretty. Also the scale is reporting the largest number I have ever seen. I don't want to freak myself out, just want to start doing the right thing.

I agree with what Heather said about starving yourself on 1200 cal. I believe that MFP sets your calorie amount at 1200 but you are expected to eat back at least half of your exercise calories. For example, if I exercise and burn 300 cal that plus the 1200 is 1500 cal and you should still be able to lose the 1 to 2 pounds. I know that when I go for a moderate walk which most of you do and get in 10,000 steps that is registered on my phone for an extra 300 cal. That doesn't even count when I do my kettle bell.

Heather UK~I have been at the 250 lbs mark for awhile, so yep, I am morbidly obese. 2 lbs a week is a bit strict, so if I lose 1 lb a week I would be happy. Pretty much its 300 calories per meal, and the rest a couple of snacks to keep me sated. The "fight" as I put it, isn't just being hard on myself, but just the re-commitment of being accountable. Living a life with smart choices. To eat meals that keep my "inner furnace" stoked. For me, no logging was quite easy, I just stopped trying, reality happens, and I slacked off. Didn't put myself first. I know all excuses.... but I was just trying to let you know that the no logging thing doesn't come naturally as it does to you. I commend you! (hugs)
When I get serious with my eating, making sound choices, I also have to pay attention. Food is fuel, food should be pleasurable, but my emotions can take over, then pretty soon I have put sour cream on each blasted vegetable on my plate. I have many trigger foods. I can also eat one item off plan, and think my whole day is ruined, and go into a not logging it day.... That becomes a no logging week... So I can spiral into things really easily.
I so would like to get my head at a good place. What worked well for me in the past was the idea that every meal was a snack, and every snack a meal. So no really eating until full, just a pleasantness feeling. Never eating until overly full. Upping my water intake and thinking of my containers as a "vitamin".
Lenora~Just typed to my middle son...and he just landed and on his way home. I can mentally rest now. It's always nerve racking when they are in transit somewhere, and I don't know quite where they are... When they are out to sea, its really nerve racking!

beth so sorry about the flu hitting home, sleep in separate bedrooms if possible. I really stayed quarantined from DH's cold but it creeped in anyway- took NyQuil and heading to bed early. Don't forget to hydrate as much as you can, that can really help as well. Here's hoping it is a 24 hour type, fingers crossed

Allie (((hugs)))) friend.... As a child of a divorce process gone horribly wrong, I can relate.... There has to be some normalcy somewhere! As a teenager watching my parents marriage of 26 yrs go down the drain, I saw the ugly. It sure doesn't help the process of divorce along that's for sure. I personally think just like you can have a great marriage, you can have a great divorce. I mean life doesn't give you guarantee's that a marriage should last forever. When it doesn't parting can be agonizing or civil. Especially when you have given it your all, and you both know its over. There comes a time when my parents could be in the same room and the air didn't become thick with hate, or mental daggers didn't come from their eyeballs.... Everything moves on. I am proud of you Allie!

I am pondering my resolutions/goals. I am going to track my calories, lower my carbs, and get back to the gym. I do think it will be good for me to set a weekly goal for myself - something to give extra focus to for a short time. As a former teacher I am all about stickers. So I will use little stickers on my wall calendar if I meet that one goal for the day.
This week's baby step goal is to overcome my couch potato habit. GET UP AND MOVE for 5 minutes every 30 minutes. I am going to do this at home and at work. I know it takes more than a week for a new habit. After doing this for a week, I hope the benefits of doing this will keep me going!
Barbie - thanks for keeping this thread going and thank you for your "happiness" list. It is spot on! I am going to paste it on my refrigerator.
Glad to have so many new ladies here. Come often to chat with us.
Good to have the travelers back home and safe.
