    :) I came to MPF in 2009 at age 62 after a lifetime of battling my weight with occasional success.....at that time, I thought I'd go the rest of my life at 185 pounds in size 16 but I gave it one more chance. I did it one day at a time and stayed open minded to new ideas. This thread is where I got a lot of new ideas. I tried new things and kept the ones that worked and discarded the others. One of the new ideas was to be on the lookout for ways to be active and gradually I increased the amount of time I walked my dogs, agreed to the idea of an exercise bike in the living room and began meeting my friends for a walk instead of a meal. I examined my relationship with food and made changes that worked for me. I live with my wonderful husband who supports what I do and has been fairly agreeable about how we've changed the way we eat. Until last month we had two poodles who were willing to walk for hours every day. When our older dog died last month, I encouraged the younger one to walk more with me and sought other ways to be active. I log food and exercise almost every day and have strong boundaries about what I eat and don't eat and when I eat and don't eat. I read books about happiness, joy, health, and fitness as well as fun fiction. I listen to audio books and podcasts while I walk so "getting bored" is never an excuse to not walk. I stared mediating awhile back after reading "10% Happier" by Dan Harris and credit meditation for the way I was able to go through spine surgery and the long recovery that is still going on. I love MFP. It helped me reinvent my life. I wish the same for you.

    Canookie – If your husband snores has he ever talked to a MD about getting a ‘sleep study’ done. Snoring is a sign of ‘sleep apnea’ which makes you stop breathing and the snoring if your body basically trying to get air and you ‘gasp’ which make the snoring sound. If he does and gets put on a C-pap; both of you will rest/sleep better. It’s not good on his heart (especially) and other organs to keep on snoring without making sure he does not have it. I’ve been on one for 6 years now; and, I find that I sleep through the night each night because I wear it religiously. I will wake up to go to the bathroom every few nights; but, that is went I fall asleep without going first. I scared my DDnL#2 half to death because I fell asleep on the recliner and stopped breathing one for a little over a minute. She said that I had stopped several times before ... that time she 'timed it'. If I don't wear it or I pull it off my face ... I am exhausted the next day.

    I use the butternut squash to make my spaghetti noodles. Cut in half, take out the seeds, put on pan, face down, cook until soft (can’t put a time, it will depend on size). Turn over and take a fork and scrape the insides to look like spaghetti; the top with your favorite sauce. The first time I had it my DnL had made it for us and made her sauce out of venison. They use venison all their ‘red’ meat, most of the time.

    Thanks for the good info. I'm sure my DH has sleep apnea, and high blood pressure. He does not now nor has he ever had medical coverage. Being Canadian, having had great healthcare my entire life, and good coverage now with my workplace here in Alaska, it's so strange to me that he will not get covered. Mind you, the open marketplace for coverage here in Alaska is a joke - only one Insurer left for the entire state, and at his age, it would cost more than he earns every month to buy it. To cover him myself through work would eat up 3/4 of my monthly salary with nothing left over to pay bills or mortgage. I have had to take him into emergency clinics to be stitched up on several occasions (he runs his own renovation and handyman business) but he's a stubborn Alaskan male - don't want it - don't need it - won't get it. I am able to cover him for vision and dental (so he has great glasses and nice teeth). He occasionally does work at the clinic in the hospital where I work and even that gives him the creeps, just coming into the building. I learned long ago I can't force him to do anything (and my mum taught me that testosterone was a form of retardation!). Darnit - I didn't do that reply quote thing properly. I'll get it right the next time ;)

    I'm in, just turned 50 this year, spent the last 2 years helping my daughter battle an eating disorder, still working on that battle. But in the meantime I'm working getting my health back in order. I was down 30 lbs before she was diagnosed and then quit them gym to focus on her feeding. Now I'm sneaking to the gym for lunch so I can get back on track. Nice to be with a like minded and challenged group of folks.

    Liz - I have a lot of DVD's too. There have been times when I've posted on here DVD's that I had that I needed to get rid of to make room for new ones. I only asked for the cost of the postage. Maybe we can trade some day? I think I have most of Jari Love's. I've done Jillian Michael's Hard Body a few times and I'm not real crazy about it, it's just OK to me. Some of it can get pretty advanced. I know that I have others, but that's the only one I can think of right now. Would you be interested in a trade? I'm not into kickboxing, I have a lot of yoga/pilates/stretching/taichi DVD's.

    Bev in New Bern NC - a friend gave me a gift certificate for Christmas to a local sporting goods store and the first thing I said was "oh, I know what I'm going to get. I need new webbed gloves for my water aerobics class"

    A while ago someone posted a recipe here for a cake that tasted like a dreamsicle. It was orange cake mix and I think there was white chocolate chips in it. Anything else?

    Meredith - sounds like you have an exciting year ahead of you. What are you getting your Masters in? Congrats

    fitgranny - it is very hard to give up sugar completely since it's in so many foods (like ketchup). I find that if I have something sour (like vinegar on my salad or lemon in my water) that helps curb the sugar cravings. If you really need a sweet fix and don't want sugar, try some dried fruit. those Sunmaid mini raisin boxes are only something like 35 calories

    Went to lunch with the Newcomers. I know this place, it's a buffet. Had mostly veges and some fish (salmon). For dessert had fruit. Only water to drink. Then came home and worked more on taking in the Christmas decorations. All the extension cords are in the garage, all the blocks are in. Actually, the only things left are the lights on the "fence" since we would need to get to the containers for the lights and right now all the inflatables are in the garage drying out. Also, the small Christmas trees since they go in a box. Same thing -- have to wait until we can get to it. Otherwise, everything is in. Oh, the lights on the arches are still up. The lights around the windows are up since we can't get to where we store them, at least not yet.

    richmondlady - our condo in FL has a technical rule that you can only have two pets in the condo. We bring our 4 cats down there and no one says anything. I'm sure what they're referring to is they don't want more than 2 barking dogs. There's also a restriction as to the weight of the dog.

    Toni - what kind of work do you do at the Y?

    Charleen - congrats on your quilt. You make such lovely quilts it's no wonder that it's been accepted. Happy Birthday

    Made these blueberry lemon muffins to take to the library and give some to Lynette and the place where I take the extremepump. They came out quite good. I saw on The Pioneer Woman that she used dried blueberries instead of fresh ones so that the batter didn't turn blue. I tried it, I thought the blueberries should have been sweeter but maybe they weren't all that sweet to begin with.

    Karen in VA - we had a freezer before we moved to NC, then once we were in NC we were in an apt for about 6 months so I didn't have a freezer. Boy, did I miss it. Now we have one at the house and I wish I had a bigger one!

    Carol - they're calling for snow Fri into Sat. That means the stores will be devoid of bread, eggs and milk. I personally think "the heck with the bread, eggs, and milk. Stock up on wine and chocolate".....lol

    Nan - welcome! You're doing well, you are doing what you need to do. At first I also needed the structure of a class, now I can do a DVD on my own at home. But before I would have just found an excuse not to do the DVD

    Lenora - I don't know what it is, but I am so very cold today. I'm a bit on the cold side, but nothing like this. Maybe I'm just not used to this cold that we're getting. So sorry to hear about your old neighborhood

    Day 5 of the year and I'm struggling today. Not sure why I am so sedentary today, which make eating problematic. I've been going to the the gym MWF. Want to yoga T/TH not so good. Good so far with logging food. Drives my husband crazy when he cooks because I ask him how much of everything and he doesn't remember to measure. He isn't allowed to throw away packages until I've logged. Making it work so far- who knows maybe he is trainable.

    On the 1st/2nd of January I joined 5 threads/challenges, each with a different focus. I’ve got to say this one is the most active and supportive. Wow!

    Saw the posts and pictures of 1lb of veggies. Surprised how manageable it looks. I had not heard that was a thing. So I googled it and most hits were saying 2 lbs. Getting head around 1 lb. is enough. Wish I had thought to measure my veggies for smoothie/green drink yesterday. Had been so long since I made a smoothie I forgot what I needed and only bought spinach and apples, back to the store tomorrow.

    Weighing in on weighing: I weigh daily and plan to update weight in MFP only first of the month. If I were to weigh only weekly I would get too discouraged if it happened on a up day without having any context to know that it had been lower. I think whoever is doing the spreadsheet and getting average is probably getting the truest picture- but no way I would remember to do enter it daily- some days I do forget to weigh.

    Speaking of logging weight, I have been on MFP for several years and I hate to put in gains. So decided to get real and put my current weight in- 13 lbs higher than last January.

    Re: gray hair, my grandfather had beautiful silver hair and that is what I hoped for. While I was working I wanted to let my hair go natural but there was so much ageism I didn’t do it. In 2014 I bleached it blonde as the easiest way to hide the gray (making it my natural brown grew out too fast to look good). I retired in 2015 but left it blonde as I was liking it but played with the idea of going natural. I got shingles this last March and didn’t color or cut my hair since then. Any day now I’m going to cut off most of the blonde (which suddenly looks better to me now that I’m considering cutting it off).

    Was trying to read all the posts, but going to have to pick it back up tomorrow.

    Michele – I’ve been cold (and ‘wet’ feeling) all day. I finally put on some monkey socks (individual toes covered); but, I should have gotten my ‘flamingo’ slippers out. Those are the warmest things that I can put on to get my feet warm. If my feet are cold and ‘wet’ feeling; I am miserable. Got to turn my mattress pad on, so it will warm up before getting in bed. I’m sitting here trying to figure out why my clock is still showing up an hour earlier. I keep ‘thinking’ I have changed it … Nahda! RATS. Drives me wild. Will go and try it again.

    Today, my ISP just stopped working and said that 'it was out-of-date' ... and I could not get any emails although I was getting notifications that I had them coming in. Would not recognize my email address and password. Can’t really access them from that point; took waiting until this morning when I could chat with my technical service. The ‘chat session’ for my ISP was getting nowhere, and it is difficult to ‘curse out a mechanical chat session with Wendy’. Like no longer being able to ‘slam the phone receiver in someone’s ear’. About all you can do is sling the darn thing across the room and hope you don’t hit anything ‘important’. Just looked up and see that I have not taken off the bows under my deer on the wall.

    Marilyn – I’ve been known to go get a package out of the trash so that I can look them up under the ‘food section’.

    I think the worst thing I ever did is cut my hair short and spikey. Grew it out; but, it too forever for it to get one length so I could have it cut in a bob. Then had to have someone feather in a spot right in the middle of the back that was a good 2” shorter than anywhere else. Looked like someone had just chopped a chunk out of my hair.

    I’d like to be able to take my hair off so that I could actually be in the position of the cosmetologist who does my hair. Not a wig, thank you, just so I could fix it, plop it on my head and look like I do when I just walk out of the salon. It seems so easy for him to do it; and, so hard when I try it myself. I might ask my DDnL#2 if she can get me one of those flat irons that has a brush in it, so the curve of my haircut will be right. But, I think it is really, expensive. Maybe I can ‘hint’ that it can be a birthday, Mother’s Day, and Christmas present combined. I love what they did for our Christmas this year. A ‘big’ soft wrap that has pictures of them on the front. My husband asked me what I was going to do with it. USE IT! Won’t it mess up the pictures? I intend on washing it when I need to on a mild setting and I don’t think it will matter. Has a picture of Will and Tami on their wedding day, their family portrait, a picture of the 4 of us, and one of Will and Mallory fishing. It is ‘huge’. I can literally wrap up in it and still have some to tuck in somewhere. I had to buy Louis one when I sent the one he ‘insisted’ was ours when we left in August; Will said the one we left was nothing more than a toe cover. It wasn’t; but, he sure hated that I sent it back to them. “Louis, it was a wedding present to them, you cannot keep it. Buying a replacement isn’t the same thing!” MEN!!!!!

    I decided that my hair is way too thin and fine for it to grow out long and not look ‘stringy’ and Louis did not like me to put it up. Got a body wave in it, walked out of the shop; and, the bottom fell out. In less than 3 minutes, I went from walking out of the shop, to looking like a drowned rat. I really could not do much with it them. It just frizzed every time I tried to fix it. It’s take forever to get the frizzed soft and silky feeling. The flat iron made it too flat, the curling iron only made the various cowlicks in it show up that much more. It has ‘finally’ settled down (somewhat). Naturally my hair is bone straight! I had a friend whose hair was long and naturally curly. We’d look at one another and say, ‘damn, I wish I had your hair’. Then each would tell the other, ‘oh no you don’t’!

    Marni - I loved all your photos. You've got quite a family of fur babies there and Wyatt Earp is gorgeous.

    DGS and I had quite a conversation yesterday. He is struggling with his social life and with anxiety. He is such a good and caring kid. Being 14 is never easy. He is also going to see a specialist at the end of January to deal with his gut problems, hopefully there is an answer. He did some work for me to help pay for part of his Quebec trip.
    I've been cooking some old favourites but today decided to use some pre-made Chicken breasts. I ended up serving burnt offerings to my DB,DSIL and DS. Thank goodness the rest of the supper turned out. Larry says to me "See, you need to use your own recipes, you don't burn those". I wanted to kick him but supposedly it was a compliment.
    Tomorrow one of Larry's cousins is supposed to be coming to stay with us for 3 weeks while he takes his oil field courses. He is quite a bit younger and we don't really know him. I am apprehensive but everyone deserves a chance. We have not heard another peep since he made the request. It would be nice to know since I am going to have to cook for him. I did get that room cleaned and ready.
    It's been snowing and looks to continue through the night. It warmed up today but still much colder than most of you.

    My quick bio: I have been on MFP for 501 days! :) I wandered into this forum after frustration with my health starting to change for the worse :'( I am post menopausal, married to a pretty terrific DH and have a DD who just went off to college, no drama in my little life- though I am the main bread winner and carry that stress like many on this thread! Anyway, my doctor wanted to increase my blood pressure medicine and something just snapped in me and I said no- I want an alternative--and she just point blank looked at me and said well then you've got to exercise and drop weight and we will see about that :| So I did o:) and was a size 8 by daughters HS graduation.

    Never as easy as all that, I have never been good at maintaining but I try every day. I love a good tip, I love sharing successes and challenges and furbaby pics (I'm allergic so I can only love them from afar). And anytime Heather describes food ;) and oh yeah love Re's alliterative greetings: good morning gorgeous girls :D

    Tip for the day, keep the reason you are doing this (either an image or a reason--not a number on inches or pounds) somewhere where you can see it and think on it- don't just think it in your head -- see it in front of the fridge or in your wallet or at your laptop etc.

    Good morning! Happy Friday! Up at 5:00, forty minutes of shoveling. SO WINDY!! It is 13 degrees; but the wind chill puts it at -4. I am sure, for some of you, this isn't cold, but this does put me into the "indecisive" category, where I mentally weigh the thought of shoveling an inch or two of snow against going out in the very, very cold. I need the exercise, so that is the only reason I went out to shovel this morning. We only got about an inch and a half of snow, and as my driveway has a few cracks, I kind of like a build up of snow over that area to keep the shovel from sticking on that area. I can really feel those sticks/jolts/stoppage of shoveling motion the next day. OOoph! :#
    Marcelyn- Ahhhh! Attack of the killer burrito! LOL! As far as food goes, it could be much worse than a burrito! So glad you have survived to fight another day!
    Mia- Hello! So glad to see you back!! Looking forward to catching up with you and what is new in your life! Did you see the article posted this morning stating that Michigan is second in the nation for most miserable winters?! (Minnesota is first- sorry Mary) I guess it doesn't have anything to do with snow amounts- they based it mainly on bad roads, hours of darkness and lack of sunlight. I don't know if I agree. I think "miserable" is a subjective term, like beauty or art. While I miss the sun in the winter, I wouldn't describe winter as miserable.
    Re- Yea! Gorgeous girl who was greatly missed! So happy to see you posting! Keep on keeping on!

    One thing I have had a hard time keeping up with this winter is water! I have an easier time drinking hot tea. Can you drink too much tea? I don't add anything to it. It is green tea or black tea. It is so cold out, I just have a hard time putting cold fluids into my body. Hmmmm...maybe if I make my tea weaker and weaker, I will eventually be drinking warm water. That can't hurt me. Anyone else have suggestions on how to get all of your water when you live in a cold climate?

    Stay on the Daniel Fast for first 21 days
    Make more time for prayer and meditate on Gods word
    Track what I eat and not go over calories
    Exercise more
    Do my physical therapy exercise daily
    Plan and make my meals ahead of time, so I do not eat something I shouldn't

    This is a great page! I am so thankful it was started! :)

    Mary... I saw that....you overachiever you....ha!

    Canookie & Lenora...suffered from waking up still tired, lack of energy & depression for years. Sleep test (done with @ home monitor) showed I stopped breathing 63, yes, 63x an hour! My tongue 100% blocked my airway. Thing is I'd wake up in morning exactly same way I went to bed night before (unsecured eye mask intact). my sleep pattern was 97% efficient...since I don't wake up. Been on cpap with nostril pads for a couple years now. Off antidepressants for months and get through the day without the mandatory nap (or 5).

    candy bar last night, so my "no late night snax" did 2 out of 3 notes. back on wagon. making more cabbage soup and settling in for the snow, now 4+ in. It will my 1st time not having to worry about shoveling..... #nicenewcondolife

    :'( We're going away overnight so we'll have to board Sasha and Bernie for the first time since Brandy died. Bernie won't know the difference because he goes to a cat only boarding place but Sasha shared a run at the boarding place with Brandy and we worry that she'll be lonely. Now I'm off to walk Sasha for an extra long time so she gets a treat before we leave.

    May I join you please, ladies? A little about myself - I now live back in the UK after 13 years in Andalucia, have just turned 55 years old and although I was a MFP member a few years back, I never really used it much. I'm a lifelong yo-yo dieter, losing the same 5/6 stone and regaining it, sometimes within a year, sometimes within 3-4 years. Last year I was diagnosed with breast cancer. This was a real wakeup call for me, and a reminder that it was time to do something about my weight once again as it had crept up to 233 lbs when I wasn't looking :wink: My active cancer treatment is over, but I will have to take hormone medication for the rest of my life. This has the side effect of weight gain. Add that to my post menopausal sluggishness and it was well time to make changes.

    With all this in mind, in March I started a combination of calorie counting and fasting for as much of the day as I felt like. Using this method, I've dropped to 176lbs, despite the tablets. Over the last couple of months, weight loss has stalled. In an effort to become more accountable, I've rediscovered MPF and realised what an incredible resource it is. Not only for food/exercise tracking, but for the community. Since beginning to log my food just a few days ago, the scales show a loss of 3lb. I know some of this may be water, nevertheless, it's made me realise that I was in fact eating more than I was guesstimating and kidding myself that I'd reached a plateau.

    I haven't done any exercise (I've always hated it), but have signed up for a C25K and bought a fitness watch to track my activity which I'm trying to up. I've started with 5,000 steps a day and will increase this to 10,000.

    Anyway, enough waffle. I think you are all wonderful and I find your posts immensely inspiring. Thank you.
