Scene: Me, 10kg down after a year of calorie counting, now starting to try and put muscle mass on, having a group chat at the office.
Coworker 1: My clothes just aren't fitting anymore
Coworker 2: Perhaps you've gained muscle since you have started excercising (excersie: walking the dog in the afternoons)
Coworker 1: That sounds about right *reaches for 7th handful of lollies for the day*
Me: -sitting silently, wishing muscle really was that god damn easy to put on-
Bonus round: the quick shift from mother from "I was half your size at your age" to "you're getting too skinny, don't get anorexic, men like a bit of meat on the bones" after 3kg loss.15 -

Kids don't like a lot of things until you make them do it, and then they enjoy themselves. Getting a kid to like walking means taking them walking and ignoring the whining. They learn to love it and it is one of the greatest gifts you can give them, imo.
I will never understand the idea that we express our love to our kids by encouraging them to be unhealthy, whether it's "kid food" or sitting on their backsides all day. Everyone likes a duvet day or chicken nuggets once in a while, but making that the routine is not an expression of love. Get the kids out in the rain. They'll thank you for it one day.
And if all else fails, take a ball and play fetch. If I've learned anything from my parent friends its that kids and dogs have a lot in common... but parents don't like to be reminded of that.

There are plenty of peer reviewed scientific studies proving aspartame is safe. I rather get my info from those than Dr oz and company.19 -

You know that's not just done at random, right? There's a whole science around how to work out the difference between correlation and causation and it's not just based on which outcome you like better.
I haven't personally looked into the evidence on artifical sweeteners so I don't have a stance on it, but I would say that googling an issue and finding that people are saying bad stuff is completely irrelevant. You need to look at peer reviewed studies and make an effort to assess the quality of the study and also check whether what it claims to prove (or others claim it proves) is actually possible to prove with that study.
As an example, the decision that studies on lung cancer and cigarettes prove causation took a lot of time, analysis and careful study design. It was not based on a bit of correlation and a hunch.18 -
I was told to visit the GP's nurse a few years ago for 'Nutrition advice' .... basically she said "Try not to do things like eat Chicken Skin when you have chicken" ...... and that was it!

My husband tells me when ever we have pasta that pasta is an empty carb so I can eat as much of it as I want and not gain weight. I have my bachelor's degree in nutrition and when I try to explain how that's not right he tries to argue with me.19

That's not daft, though. It appears that he is still inexperienced, but none of what he said is wrong apart from the part where he assumed what would work for you and what wouldn't. If his way of eating left him feeling ravenous he wouldn't be in the shape he is (assuming he isn't overweight). Many people here have lost a lot of weight and maintained it for years eating just the way he is eating, without worrying about sugar or carbs, and without feeling ravenous all the time. Horses for courses.36 -
I remember seeing an infomercial as a kid about some sort of exercise/nutrition whatchamacallit where the guy was ragging at steppers and treadmills because "what people don't understand is all that exercise will just make your legs and thighs look bigger."2

Well I have actually read a lot of studies about diet soda and none of them are good. The problem with DS is your body thinks it is sweet and you have just taken in sugar, when you haven't, so your body produces insulin to regulate the sugar you didn't drink. Eventually your body starts to slow down on insulin production and problems start. And if you don't think the phenylaniline (sp.) in Diet Coke is bad, just google it and see. If 1/2 of what is said about it is true it is really bad for you
Any studies done that suggest diet soda causes weight gain are correlational. What that means is that there is a correlation between those who drink diet soda and those who are overweight...but if we could all say it together now..."correlation does not equal causation!".
Any link between the two is easily explained by the fact that people who are already overweight/diabetic begin drinking diet soda to help them lose weight/control blood sugar.

You can employ this reasoning about anything regarding health: cigarettes, alcohol, dark chocolate, apples, seat belts, multi-vitamins, aspirin, eating breakfast, not eating breakfast ... (Also, the above is not a "fact.")
Links between things can be explained "easily" however you decide to link what with what.

You know that's not just done at random, right? There's a whole science around how to work out the difference between correlation and causation and it's not just based on which outcome you like better.
I haven't personally looked into the evidence on artifical sweeteners so I don't have a stance on it, but I would say that googling an issue and finding that people are saying bad stuff is completely irrelevant. You need to look at peer reviewed studies and make an effort to assess the quality of the study and also check whether what it claims to prove (or others claim it proves) is actually possible to prove with that study.
As an example, the decision that studies on lung cancer and cigarettes prove causation took a lot of time, analysis and careful study design. It was not based on a bit of correlation and a hunch.
I love the example of that the number of babies born in a town has a direct correlation to the number of Indian takeaways in that town. So we can obviously assume that a good curry helps pregnancy yeah LOL

Nothing wrong with what he said though. Eating clean is not necessary at all to lose weight
Also, sugars are not addictive. We crave them, but it's just an evolutionary thing to like high calorie foods, it's why we like high fat foods too. Not an addiction.12 -
