What nobody tells you about losing weight

No one told me I would have to start wearing smaller underwear...the leg holes are now too big and too often...the train leaves the station without authorization...

I thought this too (86 pounds down) when i first lost the weight but it seems as though my face is sorting itself out now. Things are shifting around and I don't look gaunt anymore. Maybe it just takes time for our bodies to adapt to the new weight?
I "third" this statement! My BMI is in the middle range for normal... Ive lost 55 lbs total. I Definitely looked older and haggard initially!! I was thinking that I'd gain some weight (maybe to the higher end of normal) back so I could retrieve my girlish looks (lol), but thankfully my face DID sort itself out! .... I was WORRIED... I mean I am 39, but I didn't have Any wrinkles before weight loss and then suddenly I had brow furrows and sharp parenthesis by my mouth. Thank God it softened back up and I didn't have to regain any of the pounds... furrows are slight and parenthesis are gone.., I can't say for fact that this made the difference, but I increased my water intake and face moisturizing.... I'll continue to do that as those were the only changes that I made and saw results,
I am so pleased to hear this, it means that there is hope for me yet. I've lost quite a bit of weight with more to lose so it's been a slight worry (although I'd rather be a healthy weight compared to how I was). I've been feeling a bit weird about my face as it does look more lined, gaunt and so much older than it used to; I'd see all of these posts about people looking younger having lost weight and think "If only!".17 -
No one told me my brain would be a sick *kitten* who enjoys tricking me.
Went shopping over lunch today and saw a pretty dress I liked. Nothing fancy. A marine blue dress with a V-neckline. It's the type that can be made to look hot or business casual depending on how you accessorize it. A bit of a chameleon dress if you want. So, brain goes: here... that's the right size for you. Mind you I know the sizing at that store pretty well as it's one of my regulars. Clothes are cheap and the quality decent enough for clothes that won't fit me in 6 months. I shopped there at BMI 40 and I haven't hit the XS range yet. Another 3-4 clothing sizes to go and the changes between sizes are amazingly predictable.
I go into the dressing room, slip on the dress and actually burst out laughing. I had taken the size I used to be at (EU48, approx US18) instead of the size I really need (EU42, approx US12). The shop assistant had a good giggle too when I stepped out trying to hold the plunging V-neckline together to avoid having my boobs spill out. Nice girl brought me the right size and it fits like a glove.
I still can't get over how TINY that dress looks compared to what I needed before. My brain can't seem to catch up to that, no matter how many times I hold a picture up for it to see.41 -
I have a pair of large pj's I got for christmas. i smile everytime I fold those sucker because it has been a decade since I wore anything without x's infront25

How much your mind will continue to trick you through the process!4 -

Ive actually gone the other way - since hitting the gym my thighs have gotten bigger, and now I find I need pants with bigger leg holes or else I feel like the circulation to my feet is cut off...7 -

Same! Pants used to be too baggy in the legs and too tight at the waist, now it's the opposite. Pants will fit loosely around the waist, yet too tight around my legs/glutes.

that my knees would stick out so much, and actually aren't 'straight'. Kinda freaked the other night about how my knee bone seems to be further to the side than it used to be (not explaining perfectly), but was reassured by physiotherapist in training that my knees are fine lol
they also stick out waaay more from my shins!10 -
I love this whole thread and I feel it all! I've lost 53 and have like 70 to go but all of the sudden I have bones18

I poke myself silly every time I discover a new bone (bruised collarbones for the win )
In order of apparition (as in... "found the silly little buggers!"):
- collarbones
- hipbones
- cheekbones
- ribs
- vertebrae (discovered those the other day when I was leaning against the wall in the break room. Bloody uncomfortable!)
Any other bones I need to be aware of? Although it's fun randomly discovering bones, it does tend to come at pretty annoying moments...15 -

I still feel my collarbones constantly and they've been around for a couple months now.
I'm becoming more and more obsessed with my hip bones because every day they feel more prominent.
I also really like to feel my muscles... which sounds weird. but my arms... feel so strong and I love the muscle. I just want to touch it... or my legs!!!! omg they're suddenly so defined! when did that happen!!! I just want to flex them and feel the muscle!!!!
I feel like a weirdo just wandering around looking for reasons to feel myself up lol30 -

Haha love this!
I was sat on sofa last night flexing my leg to see the calf muscle pop - OH looks across from working at table as my foot is making squeaky noises on the sofa arm and I got a major eye roll!14 -
I have noticed that water weight gain from sodium or time of the month is WAY more noticeable at 175 lbs than it was at 200+ lbs. Honestly, my weight did not seem to fluctuate with my cycle or after eating a very high sodium meal back when I was 200 to 245 lbs. Now, I only lose weight two weeks per month because of TOM water weight gain. And I had Chinese Buffet on Monday night and woke up Tuesday morning to find my feet and wrists puffy. Today is Thursday and I'm finally back down to pre-buffet weight. I have seen other threads where women mention the same thing about TOM water weight gain not being noticeable until they dropped down to around 190-ish, so it must be somewhat common.23

That your boobs might deflate - although I have seen a few ladies on MFP mention it now, I never expected it would happen when I started! I'm more than happy to lose some volume, since my girls were very heavy and uncomfortable, but I kind of expected them to just shrink and become smaller. Instead, they look more like balloons that someone's let half the air out of... all saggy and wrinkly and horrible. They were droopy before, but now they seem SO much worse. Couple that with the areas of "saggy fat" (since it's not actually loose skin, there's still plenty of fat in there) that have started appearing in a few places, and I'm feeling rather ugly at the moment! Smaller, but ugly. *sigh*30

Still got too much fat for that one (and monster boobs in the way) ... and yes... I went poking around to see if I could find it
Erm well... I went poking around for it after I googled it. Never actually knew what it's called before. Learned something newI feel like a weirdo just wandering around looking for reasons to feel myself up lol
lol I don't even bother with the excuses anymore (I'm as fascinated with my muscles as I am with my bones), which makes for pretty hilarious situations when you include a break room and the company's CEO in the mix. Needless to say my reputation as 'strange', is solidly cemented14 -

I look much better in a good bra. I think the ligament supporting the breast was horribly abused when I went from a 36 DDD to a 40 J. Now that I'm a 34 DD the girls just look sad. My back is much happier, though.15 -
Agreed with all the comments about being cold. I'm cold almost all the time now, but I suppose 140 lbs of added insulation being taken off will do that to you!21

Exactly this! Especially when you're a pragmatist who's very realistic about your health and weight. It's such a patronising thing to say.9 -
How often I would have to buy new clothes. The XXL's that were a little tight when I bought them in January are looking ridiculous already. I'm super sad because it is just getting warm enough to wear some of the clothes and they don't fit.10

You will resist buying clothes that are actually your correct size because when you read the label, you just don't believe it. A medium? Can't be...give me the large :-)18

I totally read that as "Xiphoid Princess" the first time I glanced at it... sounds like a sci-fi movie character to me!

Yeah, my back and shoulders feel much better a lot of the time now! I'd love to get a couple of new bras but funds just don't allow it right now, especially as I have more to lose. A local radio station has a weekly contest to win $100 for a lingerie store, though, so I keep entering and crossing my fingers!8 -
A) You have to relearn your sizes every step of the way, because your size 20 years ago at your current weight has zero correlation to today's sizing
B ) Your jeans will fit perfectly, then be a little loose, then overnight BAM! They become suddenly unwearable, so always have at least 2 sizes on hand (current plus one, maybe two sizes down unless you are close to goal)
C) Thrift shops and clearance racks are you friends
D) No one can read the size tag while you're wearing the item, so try everything on & use what looks best. It will do wonders for your confidence.
E) That it would be worth investing in a good sewing machine and taking a class to learn how to use it, so you can take your favorite clothing items in without having to pay for it.
F) That there is such a thing as closet shopping and it can be fun
G) How many date ideas you can plan that involve some sort of physical activity.
H) That you can learn not to give a flying fig what other people think of your weight loss journey. It's YOUR JOURNEY! Their unsolicited opinions have no power over me, & only have the power over you that you allow.
I) That after a while you can take the emotions out of the scale. It's just a tool, telling your brain what your body already knows. And it's only one metric, measuring something that is in flux ever second of the day. Look at the trends, don't worry about this one day versus that one day.
J) Everyone's body and journey are different. A certain type of plan is working for you? AWESOME! Don't assume it will work for everyone else, don't preach about it, and for goodness sake try to not be too judgy about someone else's choices, unless they are at a serious danger to themselves. Different doesn't mean wrong, it's just different.
K) That some things you won't be willing to give up completely, you find a way to fit them in. And other things that you thought you loved, you can give up and not miss them at all.
L) That you should take before pics AND MEASUREMENTS - sometimes the scale won't budge, but you'll drop an inch, and doing it regularly can help you with the false body image that some people deal with.35 -

My breastbone is the one that really freaks me out still. It's just plain weird. And scapula, which I most notice now sitting on hard chairs (with backs). Truly, I cannot believe how uncomfortable boney things are.8 -
that it's hard to give up such nice slacks and shirts that are so stylish but fit like clown clothes now. ..11

When you say "I eat better and move more" as how you lost weight, you will get positive comments.
"eat less, move more", not so much...30 -

One thing that nobody told me about losing weight, and I wouldn't have believed them if they had, was that I would one day love running and exercising in general. I have never been athletic and I never really found a sport or activity that I loved. I used to do aerobics and I liked it well enough, but never loved it and it was always easy to find an excuse not to do it. Now I do yoga every week day morning. And honestly I sometimes do it on the weekends too because I love it so much. I started out walking daily which I still love, but when I hit maintenance I decided that I needed some fitness goals since I no longer had a weight loss goal. So I decided to give c25k a shot. Surprisingly I really enjoyed it and actually looked forward to my running days. After I completed it I decided to go ahead with c210k. I cannot believe how much I look forward to my run days. I spend the whole day thinking about it and on the few times when the weather has been really bad and I had to reschedule my run I was so disappointed. I guess I never knew how good it would feel to be physically fit.39

That's how I feel about my workout days ! I look forward to them when before I would dread them. I noticed that the more fat weight I lost the easier running, lifting, and Hiit training has become and now it is a pleasure.
