Real Goals: Stay healthy. Train well toward Boston. Run well at the USATF Masters 8K Championship in Virginia Beach.
Today's Yesterday's notes – Summary: Racing is fun. Travel sucks.
The alleged 9 hour drive to Virginia Beach took 11.5 hours. We spent far too long stuck in traffic in Hampton, VA; at one point my friend, who was driving, gave the wheel to me to inch forward with traffic while he ran to the nearby McDonalds to use the rest room and came back. I didn't advance as far at the McDonald's when that was happening. This was a Waze-inspired detour around congestion on I-64; but we weren't the only car on the road with a traffic app. So we got to the hotel too late Friday for a shakedown run. Had dinner, had a team meeting, got maybe 6 hours of sleep before having to get up to make the 7:45 gun time.
I suffered from not doing enough homework before hand. There was a drop bag service, but instead of using it I gave my bag to a team mate's wife. Turned out it took a while to find her after the race, would have been faster to use the drop bag service. I didn't even know the gun time until Thursday night; if I'd been thinking ahead, I might have just scheduled a 2 day drive and paid for an extra hotel night somewhere in rural Pennsylvania or Virginia. And I didn't know until shortly before we left that the 8K was the *small* event of the weekend. The major events were the Shamrock Half and Shamrock Marathon (estimated 20,000 runners) on Sunday. But we made it there, and we got to the start line on time.
This was the first 8K I've run that had mutilple corrals. There were at least 4, because I saw corral 4 when I was hunting for corral 1 where all the USATF Masters competitors were placed. Spoke with a guy in a green bib who asked why I had a black bib:
If I had been thinking fast, I'd have said, "Because I'm a badass!" But I explained that the black bibs were for the USATF Masters Championship. He asked how long the race would take me. "Probably 32 to 34 minutes. I don't think I can break 32, but I'll beat 35 even if I have a bad race." His jaw dropped. This guy, who looked to be in his late 20s or early 30s thought that was incredibly fast. I told him, that's fast for 60 but the 40 year olds will blow me away.
Overcast skies, allegedly 9 mph WSW wind (felt a bit stronger, and more southerly), 47º F (8º C) was good running weather. The course was fast and flat. I went out trying to key off the fastest guy on our M 60+ team; he dropped me about a mile in. A bit later, there was the Spectator Moment of the race. You have to understand that in USATF Masters competitions, you wear bibs on your back indicating your age group:
I was about 20 feet behind a guy with a "65" on his back, with a clump of runners close behind me. A spectator shouted, "Come on, guys, he's only 65!" And the 65-69 year old raised his hand to give her a middle finger salute. As a 61 year old, I appreciated the sentiment. Later I passed him, then he passed me, and I ended up finishing 2 seconds behind him. I made a point of telling him he had the right attitude there.
Bottom line: I ran a PR 30:59. I had thought I might break 32 minutes if I had the race of my life, but breaking 31 never entered my mind. That's a 6:14 pace per mile (3:52 per kilometer), and about what I thought a decent 5K pace was for me. But it wasn't good enough for an individual award, and we didn't make the podium with the M 60-64 team. Part of that is that we just didn't have enough healthy guys running.
My PR 30:59 was good for 8th of 18 in the M 60-64 age group and 42nd of 161 overall if restricted to the USATF Masters 8K field. In the full Shamrock 8K field, I was 8th of 139 in the age group and 73rd of 7760 overall. The USATF national events draw a tough field. I'm in no danger of dominating that field, but at least I look like I belong in it.
This was the first 8K I've run that gave out finisher's medals. Since I'd seen enough "60" bibs in front of me to know I wouldn't win any individual awards and be pretty sure my team wouldn't win first place, it felt odd to get a medal for this race; but if they're going to give them to people who walk 5 miles, I'll take one too:
Then there was travel home. The road in front of the hotel was scheduled to be closed from 4 AM to 10 AM on Sunday for the marathon. Can't get out then. The common wisdom strategy was to take the car out the day before and park in a public lot, then schlep bags to the car Sunday morning. But my traveling companion's suitcase zipper broke. He had to carry his suitcase in both arms instead of by a handle. A quarter mile walk was not feasible. So we left about noon on Saturday, and drove home. Took an alternate route that was 70 miles longer but without traffic jams; but had to slow down for snow in Pennsylvania. Ended up getting to my house just before 1 AM.
The race was sure fun, but I don't know if it was worth being on the road for almost 25 hours to have 11 or 12 waking hours in Virginia Beach. Races are fun, but travel sucks.

Ran into a spam number, comment will post after approved. It's my daily mileage and race report from the USATF Masters 8K. Past experience leads me to believe that when it posts, it won't trigger a new post indicator for the group.1

Today was my first half marathon - in fact my first race ever. I spent the last few days debating whether to go with the 1h55 or the 2h00 pacers, but decided a couple of days ago to go for 1h55. After not sleeping too well (nerves) I almost changed my mind but stuck with my decision. It was apparently 11C, but being overcast and very windy (17-20mph) it felt a lot colder than that pre-start but was still pleased I went with short sleeves.
The first couple of miles were very difficult - it was on pavement next to fairly busy road so lots of avoiding street furniture and slower runners, slowing down to cross driveways/roads and then speeding up to close gaps etc. My original plan was to stay with the pacers until 10miles then just see what I could give for the last 5k with a secret aim to break 1:54. However by 1.5 miles I was already beginning to think I wouldn't have anything extra for the last bit so would just try to stick with the pacer.
Around the two mile marker we came off the main road and the rest of the route was on towpaths, parks and very quiet roads so was much easier to keep a steady pace and felt pretty good. I kept right on the shoulders of the 1:55 pacers and it definitely felt easier than I was expecting helped by a very flat route, which was fortunately dry apart from a couple of short stretches.
At 10k I decided I was feeling good and to go on at my own pace so pulled slightly ahead of the pacers and was able to slowly pull out. About 4k to go I stepped up the pace again, but then my left calf really tightened up. The last 3k or so was really uncomfortable - I don't think I lost much time but I definitely felt it! Then, with about 2k to go had shoelace issues so had to stop to sort that and probably stopped for 15seconds or so, but made me even more determined to finish fast and try to catch all those people who overtook me whilst I sorted my laces so it may be I didn't actually lose any time.
In the end I finished really strongly and with exception of my calf I felt good. I stopped my phone timer a fair bit after I finished and it read 1:53:08. That was well beyond my expectations, and reckon I was at least 30s quicker than that if not more. Sadly, my GPS cut out at one point so my phone straight-lined that bit and recorded 21.03km in total.
6 hours post finish my calf is still tight but doesn't feel like anything that won't be sorted with some rest and stretching/rolling over next couple of days. Most annoyingly though, the chip times from the event have been messed up so I don't yet have an official time. (They think I finished in 1:15:38 and the winner did it in under 33minutes!) Hopefully that will get resolved soon and I will post an update when I know and see if I can find some photos.
Having said that, even at 1:53 I am ecstatic and still on a massive high that will definitely last a while! Smashed It!!!!

Gorgeous day for running. 50 degrees F. Sunny with a slight breeze. Sure my legs were a little sore but I didn't care. Felt great to be moving outside.
To date: 77.33 To go: 27.67 Goal: 105.00* Projection: 126.17
*Original goal was 120. Reset to 90 in anticipation of having to cut runs short due to sesamoiditis. Despite, I'm still on pace to break 120. But anything can happen, so splitting the difference at 1055 -
@dkabambe Way to go. That's a great time, I think first time out. I was so sore after my first half I immediately told anyone that cared I'm never running that distance again. I did though. As far as calf, I get pretty much the same (they spasm out and I can't even move my legs) thing by mile 8 or so the last two that I've run. And last year it stayed an issue for at least two weeks. I talked to my, "primary care" physician about it and she recommended magnesium. Did the trick. I now take before every run 10 miles or more and every bike ride over 36 mi.8

Congratulations @dkabambe2

@dpwellman - Thanks for the tip about Magnesium. I do have some Epsom Salts so will chuck them in a bath tomorrow if the calf still feels as it does. Not sure how I'll feel tomorrow, but right now on a massive high and would definitely do it again!
The medal itself is a fairly chunky affair which is nice and then there were a couple of food bits: Coconut Lemon Protein Energy Ball, Coconut & Chia bites and a Peanut Butter squeeze pack. Not pictured was a bag of cappuccino flavoured popcorn as I had eaten those! There was also a pack of small post-it notes of the official charity. The T-shirt is a medium weight cotton affair and seems to be decent enough quality, but no sign of the promised Salomon Head ruff that listed in the small print. Assuming they meant a head buff, I don't mind as I have a few anyway and never really use them.
NB: They have just removed the results from website with a note saying they're being updated, so hopefully will get official times soon! (And yes, I have been checking every 2 minutes!)16 -
"Even a bad run is better than no run"
That's what my running motivation calendar had to say for this weekend. Maybe the calendar was predictive, because Saturday's run really sucked. Part of it was the weather - I didn't mind the cool temps and the light drizzle, but the really, really strong wind was another story. Even worse were the new running socks I wore for the first time that day; they had a really stupid seam across the toes, and that turned out to chafe. A lot. It got so bad I had to turn back home, where I arrived after 7 instead of my planned 16km. I was sorely tempted to call it a day; especially since by then I had matching blisters on both feet from the stupid socks.
In the end, I just put a thick coat of bike chamois crem on the blisters and changed into some old socks and the shoes with the roomiest toebox I own, then headed back out into the horrible weather. The toes were actually not hurting too much, but it was such a struggle against the wind, I kept arguing with myself for the rest of the run wether I should cut it short or not. I finished the planned 16km in the end, but I was completely wiped out afterwards.
Overnight, the weather changed completely. 16°C and sunshine. A nice surprise for my long run day!
Luckily, yesterday's blisters mostly healed overnight. Only one of them was bothering me for the first few kilometres, and then I mostly managed to forget about it. All in all, the first ~22km were really nice - well, there was a long hill from km-10 to 14, without the tiniest bit of shade, after which I was soaked in sweat and wishing for a return of winter , but mostly nice. But after that my legs started feeling really heavy; guess that windy run yesterday was just as tiring as it felt... I hadn't planned my route exactly, so I already got back to my apartment after 29.5km. Again, really tempted to stop right there. I think if it had been even the teensiest bit above 30km, I would have... Instead I just dropped my hydration pack and ran another small loop to get to 32km. And now I'm really glad tomorrow will be a rest day!10 -
Congrats on your first and an impressive half marathon! Hope your calf recovers quickly.

A lovely 43 degrees F outside this afternoon so took an easy-paced 4 mile run on the mostly dry streets. Felt a little better than yesterday's long cold run, but my left leg is still a little twingey from my cross-country skiing on Friday. I'm doing a lot of stretching and will try some rolling too. I don't think it's anything major and it seemed to feel better rather than worse to get it moving.

I haven't been here for a while due to work demands and a family emergency. I spent Tuesday evening after training in the trauma ER with my daughter's grandma (84 yo friend who lives across the street). She fell while watering her plants and hit her forehead on a large rock. Amazingly she never lost consciousness and did not break anything. She does have a massive head would that took many hours to have stitched. She came home from the hospital yesterday and we have been busy visiting her and then getting her house clean and in order (this after my much needed long run yesterday!). I thought about running today since I missed out on my Friday run but I think I was still pretty exhausted and just slept in this morning. On top of all of that work has just been a zoo and I put in a 60 hour week. I am looking forward to getting back to my schedule tomorrow - it seems like I have been saying that a lot lately!
Just a couple of call-outs here as I am way too far behind to co back and catch up on everyone -
@dkabambe - Congratulations! Awesome time, pictures and bling!!
@Elise4270 - I love your new picture with Alex! I am so glad you had a chance to spend the weekend with him and his buddy! I will be hoping for Germany or Japan too! Once he gets to Ft Stewart you will have to post the new address.
@WhatMeRunning - Look at you getting faster and faster again!

@juliet3455 That's a sweet little hill in the middle of your run Not surprising your legs were tired on the run back.
@RespectTheKitty Sorry that you are sick. Gett well soon! After a 48 day exercise streak, you've earned some rest.
@garygse That's more than decent elevation for 7 miles, sounds like you found some nice hills to run your repeats!
@9voice9 You can manually enter a 10k PR on Strava (go to your profile and, next to "All-Time PRs", click on "Add PR"). You can still link that to the corresponding activity. You won't get the achievement, but it will show up as a PR on your Strava profile. Not the same, but that's what I did for my last half marathon when Strava "cheated" me out of the last few meters.
@RodrigoBuntan Congratulations on your amazing achievements! 10k PR and a new distance PR in the same week, awesome!
@midwesterner85 Even if your pace is not what you want now; with race day adrenaline you might still be faster!
@patrikc333 Sounds like a tough run. Talking donughts would freak me out! At least with the marathon only two weeks out, you can now relax a bit and start tapering, right? Will it be your first marathon?
Snowshoe and cross-country skis sound like quite the workout, kudos for doing a hilly run the next day!
@WhatMeRunning That's brilliant that your run today felt so good, you're making a great comeback.
@dkabambe Great race report, and an awesome first half marathon too! I've never heard about the chip times getting messed up like that, good that they figured it out. And your time is even more incredible than you thought, wow! Love the photos

Thanks @shanaber. @Stoshew71 I told Alex in one of my letters to EMBRACE THE SUCK. Idk if that's an Army/military term or not, but he and the soldier I had this weekend used the term freely. Haha!
Private Winchester can be written at the same address. Great kid. He's a "Nasty Girl" (national guard). He's from Hawaii. He's Alex's bunkmate.5 -

March total to date – 131.04
Nominal Challenge Goal – 225 miles
Real Goals: Stay healthy. Train well toward Boston. Run well at the USATF Masters 8K Championship in Virginia Beach.
Today's notes – Yesterday's report still hasn't posted. I overlooked my total mileage of 11.18 miles less than today's containing a number that MFP considers spam. For those interested, the short description of yesterday is: Running national USATF races is fun. Traveling to them sucks. I ran a PR 30:59 8K in near perfect running weather. That's an average pace of 6:14 per mile or 3:52 per kilometer, about what I had been thinking of as a good 5K pace. My result was good for 8th of 18 in the M 60-64 age group in the USATF Masters 8K, 8th of 139 in the age group of the Shamrock 8K as a whole. I was 42nd of 161 overall in the USATF Masters 8K, 73rd of 7760 overall in the Shamrock 8K as a whole. I think the serious racers who weren't competing in the USATF Masters event did the Shamrock Half or Shamrock Marathon instead of the 8K. I earned no individual or team honors; the USATF national events bring out a tough field to compete in.
One of the consequences of the sucky travel yesterday was that I got home at 1 AM this morning. That let me get back on track with marathon training late this afternoon. Today's assignment was 4 miles easy, 3 miles MP, 4 miles easy. Temperature was near 40º F (4º C) with 8 mph N wind. It felt great. Mile splits were 8:18, 8:10, 7:52, 7:53, 7:21, 7:23, 7:16, 7:52, 7:49, 7:59, and 7:42. Then after the Garmin ticked 11 miles I ran a simulated finish line kick to my driveway, which Garmin says was a 6:02 pace. Got some good stretches in, and all is right with the world again.

Ran the 5k at Big Island International Marathon (...and other runs....) and all I got was this lousy keychain!
...oh yeah, and this plaque for first place in my age group (1 of 13) (it's good to be old.....). Today was the first time in a LONG time that I actually felt like a runner instead of an old lady moving faster than normal...
And since I presume most of you don't have Taiko drummers to start off your races: here is a clip of the 1/2 marathon start:

Still sick today, and for some reason my lower back hurts as well. Only did an easy four miles. My back felt okay during the run, but now it's really sore. Hoping it doesn't get any worse. I used to have lower back pain all the time, but haven't had much of it in the last year since I've gotten more active. So, not sure what's going on.5 -

After the past almost month of being sick and missing some of my mileage I really needed this run. It was such a mental boost of confidence getting an almost half marathon distance in, with 2 months still to go before my next half. Took it easy on the first 9 miles, managed nice negative splits on the last 3, and still finished feeling pretty darn strong. Legs feel great. I definitely need a new battery in my heart rate transmitter though, or otherwise I need to be in the hospital, lol. 203 bpm while running easy on a flat path within the first few miles, but 150 bpm in the 12th mile? I don't think so!8 -

I'm baaacckkk! Lol! Had an awesome ski vacation last week. I didn't fall once!! While the NE got pounded with snow, Colorado had temps in the 40s and 50s at the base of the mountain our last ski day. My 9 year old did awesome. On our last day, he braved the terrain park and some moguls, only fell once! BTW, Copper Mountain is where we went...I would highly recommend it. My favorite Colorado ski area so far.
I'm 385 posts behind...yikes! My son played 7 soccer games over the weekend, so I fit in running where I could. Its hot here in Tx, so trying to run early mornings again. Ran a 10 mile trail run on some mountain bike trails that I haven't explored before. It was tough, and there were times I wanted to stop and walk, which hasn't happened to me in a while. I'd just remind myself that I ran a marathon so I can totally do this. It was fun, and I'm glad I pushed through.
On a good note, the runner’s knee I had in my right knee during marathon training seems to have completely disappeared. I can run downhill again with no issues at all. However, skiing has aggravated the arthritis I have in my left knee. It bothered me yesterday, and in the 1st few miles today, but once I was warmed up, the knee pain was non existent.
Hope everyone has a great week! Gonna do my best to catch up.11
