Was a little worried about how last night's hard run (8 mpm descending to 7:15 mpm) would affect this morning's run + strength session, but I actually felt great. Maybe a little sluggish at first during the warm up, but a little FloRida cranked up got me going and feeling super. Plus, (and I usually don't have my "official" weigh in until Saturday) I was pleasantly surprised to be -1.4 on the scale. Not a bad start to Thursday at all...Hope everyone made it through the storm OK (NE US)!7 -
Last night at the gym while I was waiting for a rowing machine to open up, I tried some of the upper body weight machines. Oooooof, I am feeling that today.5

Last night I did feel a little more sore and tired than prior nights, plus a cold/allergy/sinus thing that came on in the evening kept me from getting the best nights rest. But when I woke I was no longer sore anywhere, and felt I could run. I turned around at the 1 mile point deciding to cut the run to 2 miles, which I think was for the best. I walked over half of that last mile.
Rest day tomorrow! As long as I'm not coming down with anything I'll see how things go next week. I'm hopeful to do 3 miles each running day next week.

@Stoshew71 - glad the calf was okay on your run today!
@MobyCarp -wow - can't imagine all that snow!
I didn't have much time today as I had to head out to a programming competition (with my students).
But I was able to get in 3.6 miles. I haven't made it to strength training this week. UGH! I really want to go 3x a week but so much grading and other stuff going on. I should at least plank/squat/lunge at home, but it hasn't happened yet.

@ctlaws44 - Cold in SE Virginia? Oh, no! I have to run 8K in Virginia Beach on Saturday! (Forecast low 41º, high 63º. I think I'll survive the rain forecast for that day.) It's a bit chillier here; see picture and tale of woe below.
That's exciting! Yes, the weather down here can change REALLY fast. we're just getting over a cold snap. I Don't trust the forecast more than 24 hours out. Hope the weather is good for y'all. Safe travels. You're going to do great!!2 -

Felt good to get out and get some decent miles in! Most of it was done w/a stomachache due to the stupid antibiotics I'm on, but whatevs. Also, forgot to charge my Garmin, so it died 5.8 miles in, grrr. Does a run still count if it hasn't been tracked by your Garmin? Ugh.
Did the whole run in my new zero drop Altras, just because of patchy snow. I had only run 2 miles in them prior to this. I am shocked at how comfortable they are, no calf distress or anything. My only guess as to why is because I'm already not a heel-striker and I kinda have calves of steel from dancing for so many years and lately doing 270lb+bodyweight calf raises at the gym, lol.7 -

Thanks everyone who commented about my son. I've not heard anything from the police so I assume they have no leads. I find myself eyeing up every red 4 door in town, first to see if it's being driving by an older lady, then looking at the front end for damage. I want so bad to bust this gal. I don't even care about the money, it's the principle of the matter.
I took the bike into the shop yesterday and as I suspected, the frame is bent and it can't be fixed. Specialized does have some sort of crashed bike discount though, so we can get 20% off a replacement bike, which will help. The shop has the exact same bike in stock so we'll be able to pick it up tomorrow night after work.
No run last night as I had to run errands and do Dad stuff.
I climbed 90 floors today at work today, split over 3 breaks. I've decided I to enter my stairwell adventures into Strava manually so I can track the elevation with my run elevation. To do that I log the stair climbing as runs, but with just 0.1 mile distance.
Hoping for a 7+ mile trail run tonight after I make dinner, but may have to skip it.6 -
Really feeling my knee for some reason. Going to see how it is tomorrow and might just try 2-3 slow miles.1

Nominal Challenge Goal – 225 miles
Real Goals: Stay healthy. Train well toward Boston. Run well at the USATF Masters 8K Championship in Virginia Beach.
Today's notes – Got out at 10:30 or so, at 27º F with 16-20 mph W wind. The roads were clear, but the shoulders were snow packed or slush covered most places. I decided against my normal 10 mile route because I need about 1000 meters of sidewalk, and I suspected it would not be cleared. (Drove past there later; it wasn't.)
Wore my Peregrines, and physically I was okay. But the strong W wind for a mile and a half early got to me, and the traffic was getting on my nerves because I couldn't tell what the drivers were going to do. I had originally thought 15 miles, and set out on a 7.2 mile route to start. Then I got to thinking 12 miles, and by the time I was nearing 5 miles I thought maybe just 7. As fate had it, I crossed a key intersection in stride so I could add a nice hill and come out around 8 miles. When I got to my driveway, I was done. There was no physical issue, but emotionally I'd had it with the heavy trail shoes and the slush and the drivers veering over the white line onto the shoulder. Call it the after effects of the storm on my mental state.
I was kind of surprised when I looked at the stats that both pace and HR looked like a well managed easy run. I just wasn't feeling it today. But any run is better than no run, and 8 miles will just have to be good enough. Tomorrow is a long drive to Virginia Beach. If I'm lucky, we'll get there early enough for a shakedown run in the evening. If I'm not, the next run will be a pre-race warmup on Saturday.
I did see that Saturday's race has a name. The registration confirmation email from USATF says the location is "Shamrock 8k - Virginia Beach, VA, USA". Maybe I'll see some local runners who aren't competing in it as a USATF event. The Lilac 10K in Rochester is like that; it is a traditional local race in addition to being the USATF Niagara Region 10K championship.

(OK it was only a few kms out of town, but humour me. )
I did Body Balance afterwards, and this afternoon I practiced my handstands.

I'm curious here. Did it FEEL easy to you? Your description makes it sound like it didn't feel easy, or was hard work because of the environmental conditions. I'm interested in how when something reads on paper as being 'easy', whether it actually is, or whether we should rely on our gut feeling as to how a run feels - which is pretty much the decision you made at the end there. I've just been listening to a podcast about enjoyment of running and running to play rather than run with a hard target, and I think I'm more of a player (certainly if I want to maintain my interest in running).

Ran with my club last night, off road, through the trees across fields with plenty of up and down-y stuff. I find myself struggling running with them, but it does mean I vary where I am in the group so I get to talk to different people during the run depending on how tired I am or how slowly I’m going!!! We tend to start and finish at a pub, so I get a beer and a burger for my troubles after.
I’ve been having issues lately where the more I run the slower I seem to be getting and the harder it is. I don’t get into my stride until 2miles into a run so I’m wondering how to get my body better at handling it.
Do I – continue with the running four days a week, with one long run? Or – do I run everyday but limit myself to 1-2 miles a day, with two of those days being longer (one proper long run, and one sort of halfway to that)? I just can’t work out how to better condition my body. At the moment the only other activities I am doing is one (intense) dance class and a T’ai Chi session. I’m building to a HM so I am concerned about the balance of my runs (looks like my long run is coming out at around 50% of my weekly mileage!!)
2 -
Hangover/tiredness got the better of me yesterday so didn't get out for the 45-minute fast run I wanted to. Given my HM is Sunday and I want to do well (my first race) I decided not to replace it like-for-like today and instead just did 30 minutes easy today. Was very windy, but at 10C and sunny I didn't mind. Otherwise very little to report from today.
As for Sunday, I've been keeping an eye on the weather forecast. The threatened rain looks like it might hold off until Monday, (which is good as it's a mixed surface route), and it's expected to be about 10C with light (7mph) winds and cloudy. Assuming it's not too humid should be just about perfect, but the UK being what it is the forecast will no doubt change half a dozen times before Sunday comes around! Have been getting very excited for the last week or so, but also starting to get quite nervous now though not entirely sure why!
After my good 90-minute pace run on Monday I have decided that assuming I get a semi-decent amount of sleep next couple of nights I am going to go out with the 1h55 pacer. My aim when I started training was 2h10, but should be able to do a sub 2hr run. However, my stretch aim is 1h56:46 (2 x WR time) and Daniel's predicts I could theoretically do a 1h52:49, so we'll see...

@7lenny7 I'm glad your son is alright!
I can understand that he first told the driver he was okay - it's such a reflex. The only time I got hit by a car when I was on my bike, I did the same, which also resulted in the car driver leaving (at least with an excuse instead of any stupid comments!). It was only after he was gone that I realised one wheel was bent completely out of shape and I had a bleeding knee with matching hole in the jeans. I really hope I'll never ever hit someone with my car, but if I ever do, I promised myself I'll stay around, even if they say they are okay in the first shocked moment. Five minutes of time shouldn't be too much too ask if you hit someone with your car! I hope the police can track the driver down. In movies they always seem to have surveillance cameras at the next intersection...
But it sounds like you have a great time with your sons despite the bike incident, that's awesome!
@greenolivetree I hope times will be less stressful for you now, and that your knees hurting was just a one-time thing on a horrible day.
@ddmom0811 I can't believe you call 5:30 sleeping in I'm a zombie if you drag me out of bed at that hour, I'm really impressed by how early you usually run.
@RuNaRoUnDaFiEld If you don't live near that course, do you have other hills nearby? From the picture you posted it's hard to tell, but it looks like none of the hills are steeper than maybe 5%? Then I think you would be fine by running whatever other hills you come across instead. If you don't have any hills at all, you might have to get more creative by running stairs or bridges or parking garage ramps...
@ereck44 Great 8mile run!
I haven't got tight lower back muscles from running; but if the distance was new for you and the last two miles were really hard, it's probably not surprising that you felt still the next day. Especially if your running form "degrades" when you get tired towards the end.
@KatieJane83 Glad you are feeling better!
Of course a distance still counts if it's not tracked by Garmin - since my running watch is a Tomtom, otherwise I wouldn't run any distance at all. That's going to sound crazy, but when I started running (~10 years ago), I actually tracked my distance by estimating the route on a paper map! Hard to imagine now, but it was at least accurate enough to tell the difference between 3km and 6km, at least3 -
@dkabambe Good luck for Sunday's race!
Friday is normally my longer run day, but I decided to cut it back this week, and will probably do some hill work tomorrow instead. Happy Saint Patrick's Day everyone!

Today's notes: Today's run tested my belief that there's no such thing as a bad run. Woke up feeling not great, got all set and went out. There was 2-3 inches of fresh snow on the ground, footing was HORRIBLE! I ran my loop around town constantly searching for where cars had driven, so I could run in their tracks. I was just not feeling it at at all today, and py pace and HR really tell that story. 944 pace with a 171 average HR.....this run kicked my *kitten*.
With that happy thought, I've decided to switch my long run from tomorrow to Sunday. My wife has her first race tomorrow, a 4k, so I'll be playing driver and daycare. I'm super proud of her, getting into running.10 -
Question for anyone with an optical heart rate monitor:
My HRM has been acting really weird recently. For runs where I would expect the heart rate to be between 150-160bpm, it's sometimes climbing up past 200 or dropping below 100.
Did anyone ever have problems like that, and did you find a way to fix it?
With the optical heart rate measurement, I've often seen that it takes a few minutes to give good readings when it's cold outside, but nothing like this:
That's yesterdays run, which was a nice, easy run. In the past, I might have gotten close to 200 at the end of a series of hill sprints with little recovery, but recently my HRM has shown me readings like this one during regular runs.
Or the other extreme, where it suddenly drops down (the pace stayed the same):
If my actual heart rate was doing funny things like that, I should notice, shouldn't I?

Today is a walking-only day for me. I had to bring my car into the shop early this morning (they open at 7, OOOF), so I arrived at work far too early. Decided to walk around the atrium until it was time to start. I've already gotten 1.5 miles done and it's not even 8:30 am. Determined to hit my 15,000 Garmin step goal without any running today. (Most days I'm over 20,000 when I do both walking and running.)
One odd thing I noticed after my run last night was that my HR didn't get above 121 the entire time. Usually it gets into the 140s when I run. I did go easy yesterday, but I didn't think I was going THAT easy. Hmm.
Hoping they can get to the bottom of whatever's wrong with my car. It's having the exact same problem it did when I brought it in a month ago. Apparently changing the spark plugs was not the answer. In the meantime, I have a loaner car, and it's always fun driving a new car for a while.
Happy St. Patrick's Day!4
