What nobody tells you about losing weight

I've seen quite a few posts here claiming that "eating healthier is more expensive"
I honestly don't see how that is possible, if you show any concern about prices when shopping
- no fast food saves big $
- I'm eating half the food before I was dieting
- Many healthy foods can be bought in bulk
Can anyone explain why healthy eating is deemed much more expensive? I would agree it takes more planning and prep, but not more money. I would need to buy everything single servings at Whole Foods, to spend more money.
Because in the winter, in NY at least, all fresh fruits and veggies have to be shipped in and that costs. Organic costs more also. Lots of people don't have the room to buy in bulk, so that's out the window. And hooray for you that you have the time to do all the prepping and what not but not everyone does. Meaning, they do buy the single servings and that is more expensive.
I work full time, am taking grad classes, help take care of my elderly widowed grandmother, and my mom was just diagnosed with breast cancer so I am helping her as much as I can. I don't have a ton of time to prep. I do my best, but it's less time-stressful to buy the single servings.
Ex- bag of orange at my store- about $3.98, bag of chips- $2. I could an eat every day for a week as my mid morning snack, or a portion of chips. The chips are about half the price. I don't, I'm just using it as an example.17 -

I see what you're saying, but you must also take satiety into account. A one ounce portion of potato chips is likely less satisfying than an orange (just in terms of hunger, not necessarily taste or preference). That being so, I'd be much more likely to polish off half a bag or more of chips in a single sitting, doing away with any monetary savings and also eating more than is good for me.
eta: An orange? I'd have one, maybe two, at a time.8 -

Yes!! I think it's because all the fat isn't suffocating the muscles so they can cramp more freely now. That's just my hypothesis. The pain is back to about how it was before I gained all of the weight, so I think it's back to "normal."5 -

One weird thing I discovered with weight loss is that your joints will crack and click EVERYWHERE. It's like they're trying to realign themselves after such an extreme. It finally stopped for me now lol, but it was just so weird as it was happening12

That's so true and I have gone through that experience too! That the body is an amazing machinery to do such realignments is incredible.

34 DD... Where I am after losing 110 lbs. I was a 40 J When I started. I nearly sent my newest bras back to herroom.com without trying them on, because they looked like small people bras and I'm clearly still not a small person at 160 lbs.
I've never been a 34 DD; even as a teenager the smallest Band I wore was a 36. I think this may have to do with my ribcage twisting because of my scoliosis, but hey, at lay that's one happy side effect. For the first time ever, my undermines don't go to the middle of my armpits, but instead fit entirely in front of me!
I still can't buy bras at target or the like ( 36 is the smallest band they sell DD in!} I personally fantasize about a nice B cup... I dint think that's in the cards, though, and I'm very happy to be Where I am now.14 -
How much easier it is to get drunk! I drank the other night with that goal in mind and drank half of what I used to and was wasted!8

That looking visibly slimmer would, without me ever saying a single word to him about my diet, silence the man who has lectured anyone and everyone on his latest elimination health kick for as long as I've known him. Don't get me wrong, he's still going on about it to everyone else, but I've noticed he's not picking me as the unwilling audience of the day any more. Further, he's not taking it on himself to criticise my meals either. Result!
I can openly eat whatever I want in front of him and I. Don't. Hear. One. Word out of him about the importance of avoiding processed food and how he's given up sugar as his New Year's Resolution.46 -
that I would have a drawer of tank tops for undershirts. I never had the need for undershirts now I have them in every colour and a drawer dedicated to them17

How much counting calories will become as much a part of your routine as brushing your teeth. Sure I've cheated on calories a lot, and I failed at "maintaining", but it's been very easy to log every day for the past 4 ½ years. And even if I go through slumps I know 100% what I'm doing and how it effects my weight loss/gain. Definitely no longer shocked when I've gained weight after the holidays.
Also, not me, but many others have shown that they have been able to let the counting go and now go by listening to their bodies. I'm not really ready for that mentally, as I said I cheat a lot on food, but I think a huge part of the process isn't just weight loss, but becoming more aware of eating habits/exercise. No matter how good or bad you are at them. Knowledge is power.29 -

I also have a drawer dedicated to tank tops for undershirts. But I actually find I need them less often now than I did before! how interesting!7 -

@wbandel you make some great points. Knowledge is power but personally at age 63 I has to come face to face with my potential premature death before I could act on the knowledge in my case. Finding the right macro for my way of eating was key to maintaining by listening to my body and two years later this WOE is still working for me.

That the cellulite on my thighs would go away. It's been my loathed companion for 30 years, and two days ago I looked in the mirror and was like, "Whaa.... Wait a minute. WHAT?" I keep checking in different lighting, making sure it's gone. I think it was those pesky "last five pounds" that did it, plus a regular exercise routine that includes squats.38

I don't find that to be an issue at all. I eat the same foods as my husband and the same schedule. I eat the same foods as I always ate. The main difference now is I weigh all my food.15 -
That when you go a week or two without losing weight you feel as fat as you ever were even though you know you've already lost 25 lbs. That is so WEIRD! Love this thread!32
