Wednesday Wish: That I would stop kidding myself, and to put it bluntly and crudely, "get off the pot, or p..s in it". I make countless plans and goals, spend huge blocks of time preparing documentation for them, think about them non-stop ... the only thing I don't do is "follow through" ... usually because I've completed exhausted myself and run out of time. I don't want to run out of time on getting my blood sugars lower, and I know to do that primary achievement I need to: "eat less and move more" and I need to lose all the grossly excess weight I carry. So, I need to stop thinking and just start doing.2 -

I seem to be consistent with a 1.8 pound loss for the last several weeks. I'll take it!
I enjoyed reading the posts by those that have started digging into their heritage. I started digging into my father's side of the family as a relative of my mom has already done her side. I haven't been able to go back further than about the 1840's when my great-grandparents migrated from Germany. (A lot of Germans on this thread!) I found a few skeletons that no one was aware of; like my grandmother was born illegitimate to a single mother in 1912. Her mother did marry just months after, but not to the man who's (partial) name is on the birth certificate. It took me a while to build the courage to tell my dad what I found, but when I did he took it with a grain of salt. I wasn't sure how he'd react to finding out who he thought was his paternal grandfather was actually a step-grandfather.
@campfirequeen1 - my family history is in Pittsburgh too. Though I live in south Florida now, I was born and mostly raised in Pittsburgh. I am curious, do you know which park near Pittsburgh your family foraged for mushrooms? Pittsburgh has always been rich in eastern European culture.

As of today, I officially have less than 100 lbs to lose, my goal weight being 105 lbs. Back in March, when I started this process, I weighed almost 230. I had no idea when I started that I would become this motivated and driven; things had gotten so far off track with my health that I was seriously considering just giving up.
25 lbs later, I feel like a new and better version of myself. Running is my motivation. My hope is that by fall I'll be able to enter (and complete at a run) a 5K, and the "big goal" is to run either a 10K or half marathon around this time next spring. I feel these dreams have moved from the pipe dream category into the "definitely possible" category. A big thank you to everyone on this thread for continuing to be so supportive and motivational.7 -

YES!! That's more like it!
I'm especially happy about this week's loss because I injured my right knee recently and I have not been able to run/walk in over a week. Have really been babying it, with ice packs and heating pads, keeping it elevated and in a brace, etc. Feeling much, much better and am slowly starting to walk more again. What's really exciting for me, though, is that even thru this time of sharply decreased activity I DID NOT GAIN! In fact, I lost the weight I'd gained the previous week (which I'm sure was mostly water). This past week I ate slightly less calories every day to make up for the lower activity and - voila! - I was successful. For a long time now I've been hearing from "wellwishers" that "weight loss maintenance is the hardest... just wait when you have an injury..." and I've been dreading for that to happen. So now it happened (as an injury is bound to happen eventually, to everyone), and I managed to not gain. So, yay yay to ME!!7 -

My scale was being a bit wonky this morning so I'm not 100% certain that this number is correct. But that's what it said. After coming off of the long weekend, yesterday I weighed in 6.2 lbs heavier than today... Maybe I too need to look into a new scale.
Getting so close to 2 mini goals - 30 lbs lost ( half of my 1 year goal) and being back in the 180s. Looking hopeful to be out of obesity by the time Canada Day rolls around!

I'm going steady and slow this time. I'm using a Fitbit Blaze and eating back my activity calories. I have my fitbit account set for a 1000 calorie deficit which is more like a 640 calorie deficit according to what I've actually lost, but, plenty for now.

@RobinB0812 Hey. Robin, I had noticed you were from the Pittsburgh area! My in-laws lived in West Mifflin and they always said they were going to Bethel Park (one of his aunts lived there), but I think the actual name of the large county park is South Park. My husband's family lived all around the river towns where the steel mills were, like Munhall, Duquesne, McKeesport, and all the way down to Monongahela. We lived there for a while up on the northwest side of town on a high cliff over the Ohio river in Coraopolis, which is in Moon Twp. And yes you are right, it is saturated with Eastern European descendants!
I love the food, although it is much more bland than what I grew up eating. Who doesn't love pierogi, which they often referred to as halusky, not to be confused with halupki, which is cabbage rolls... hers were divine. My MIL used to spend a whole day making halusky (my fav was the potato and onion) and freezing them, now I wish I had learned how to make them, because she made the best I've ever eaten! The other thing that I can recall her spending whole days making before Christmas was their traditional nut and fruit roll pastries. Everyone seemed to favor the nut rolls but my fav was the lekvar (prune/plum) or apricot. I always thought the poppy seed ones smelled and tasted musty and I didn't care for them, but I loved poppy seed cake! How does that happen? lol Something that I found a bit confusing was that they also called another dish halusky but it wasn't pierogi, it was cabbage pan fried with onions and then cooked egg noodles were added and simmered together for a bit. It wasn't my fav because the first time she made it for me, I was in my first trimester of pregnancy and everything made me sick. but the smell of the onions frying in butter and then the cabbage on top of that did me in seriously!
Oh and how could I forget palachinki? I never liked it, because I was accustomed to the French crepes and they are more to my liking, but my husband loved them and my children loved them rolled up with Jelly in them. My daughter learned to make them from her grandmother and now gladly fixes them for her brothers when we at all together, because I never learned to make them!2 -

@campfirequeen1 ... Your post made me want to run to the kitchen with my mom's cookbook and cook, cook, cook!!
The interesting thing, to me, about the cultural foods our various ancestors brought with them to America is that they were all simple foods, both comforting, filling, and for the most part nutritious and easy to prepare once you knew the basics. Take for instance, the noodle recipes from anywhere in the world ... Spaghetti (long pasta) or macaroni (short pasta), noodles made from different types of grain ground into flour. ...
I can clear up one mystery you had, or two ... about Halusky (the spelling and pronounciation will differ depending on region/country) ... but it means "noodle" (any thick, soft noodle or dumpling) So, when you had the dumpling version of it, you where eating what my family called Vareniki and our Polish friends called Pierogi (usually steamed or boiled) and when the cabbage and egg version was made, it was still the noodle that was the star, but now in a casserole type dish (and very popular in German stemmed cultures) ... there is usually an addiitonal word with the recipes to describe what kind of halusky dish it was. Ah - this reveals why I so much love the American comfort casseroles called "Tuna Noodle Casserole" and "Macaroni and Cheese"
And, those palachinki are actually rolled crepes ... and they look like fingers or sticks ... therefor the name "little fingers, or little sticks". My mom made those all the time but she called them Blintchiki (Blin being Russian stem word for thin pancakes). Another term for them my mom used, depending on how she prepared them, was Nalesniki.
And now I'm really gonna head to my kitchen and grab that head of cabbage I brought home from the store this week and get to shredding it so I can make something out of stewed cabbage later on this week!
PS ... @welcome-to-the-new-folks who have spotted our thread and want to join in ... the only entry 'ticket' is that you had needed to lose 100 pounds or more when you started your weight loss journey! ... cause we are 'special' people ... ha, ha ... no ... really, we are! And, we are striving towards not being in that category of body obesity any more!2 -
To all those talking about food. We grew up on vereneki and kilka with farmer sausage of course. Yes vereneki is a pierogi. Kilka is just the noodles. We make portzelky and roll kuchen too. i also like to make cabbage borscht and summer borscht and the cabbage rolls too.
I think i may just crockpot some lazy mans cabbage rolls this week. Thanks for the idea. That would fit real good with my meal plan. As long as my budget allows the purchase of the beef.
Hmmm. My heritage is slightly different from your guys. But some similar foods. I am Mennonite and my ancestors immigrated to canada 6 generations before me. We fled Russia during the Stalin persecution. If you take the family tree back further...we are Dutch.

OK, I know today is "Thursday Truth" and not "Saturday Success", but I couldn't wait until Saturday to HIT MY FIRST MAJOR GOAL! Today I am down to 250 (from a start of 293), and I had to enter a new goal into Fitbit. So now my Fitbit goal finally matches my MFP goal. I'm looking at you, 225.9

Truth Thursday: fallen off the wagon, but hanging onto the side for dear life! I start the mornings off so well but haven't been following my routine once the day gets going (end of school crazieness is what i keep telling myself) so my mind can't seem to remember to make good choices ( i apperantly cant keep chocolate bars for end of school celebration smores in the house without eating them all) and it's telling my stomach it's more hungry than it really is so it's all down hill from there. I upped my daily calories to see if I had just been too low for too long but it hasn't helped. I havent been to the gym in 3 weeks but keep telling myself as soon as school lets out it will be easier, lies lies I tell you!! I have gained 2 lbs and so I didn't weigh in the challange yesterday hoping I can be very diligent and by Saturday get it back down to not show a gain. this is why I need truth Thursday so much. see how many lies I tell myself so I feel it's ok to start tomorrow(the tomorrow that never comes) to getting back on track. But it's today, so I start today, I start now.4

Thursday truth: I lowered my expectations and raised my calorie goal. I still want to get rid of this excess fat asap but I just wasnt able to restict myself enough to stay within the cal budget for 2lb/wk so I lowered it to 1lb/wk. Here's hoping this will help inch me closer to my goal.6

Thursday Truth ... understand exactly how @jam5660 feels cause what was said could have been written by me.
Today I am really glad that I dropped 1.8 pounds in water weight in the last 24 hours. ...
that means I am not as much over my starting weight on April 19th as I reported yesterday ... however, I am still over by 1.6 pounds.
Today is a doctor appointment for my annual physical, my fully dressed weight at his office was 244 on January 18. Now that's a depressing realization: I was 235 on my birthday in mid-March and now am back up over the past 2 months ... and it's all due to my apparent inability to stay consistent in my diet plan. Wonder what the next 4 months will bring? Niki ... consider this a wake-up call to get back on track.4 -
Thursday truth: it is hard to go out to eat and be able to accurately track, without going to a major chain restaurant. I like going to small local restaurants (mainly because humm I had to stop to think about this....I guess it's because when I've gone recently it's been at lunch and I can go without kids. So I want to go somewhere that I can get food that I don't know how to cook, like Indian or Thai). But those places don't have calories on the menus. It makes me really grateful for calories that are on the chain menus.
Typically when I'm out at an American food restaurant that is small I can find a similar restaurant on my fitness pal that I've eaten at before and can make the judgement call, is this current dish more or less or about the same calories as the one on my fitness pal.
But this is really hard when at Indian or Thai or Chinese because the calories for the restaurants in MFP are very different for the same dish and I've never been to any of those restaurants.
Ok sorry "my life is so hard" rant is over. I know it's a stupid thing to complain about when I'm able to go out to eat and I'm able to have all these great local places to choose from.
So back to yesterday, even though it was crazy I thought about you on this board. I after having my normal tracked breakfast I wanted to go stuff my face with fast food. Because the day was a waste right?!? I was going out to lunch to a place where I had no idea how to pick something healthy. But I thought about what you guys have said here and stopped myself. Why throw myself down the stairs when I haven't even fallen yet. So I drank my coffee and refilled my cup. As a treat I added a little coffee mate (I'm trying to learn to like black coffee).
I'm still too scared to weight in. I felt like I made good choices yesterday but I think the soup was salty because my fingers feel swollen...so I'm scared that a huge gain will undo the resolve that I built up yesterday by not throwing the whole day away.6 -

Listening to some of these recipes, and hearing about the Pope's interaction with Melania Trump yesterday made me remember that both of my grandmother's baked poteca (pronounced po-tee-zta), and I have a photocopy of one grandmother's handwritten cookbook. I'll have to see if she has any Pittsburgh favorites in it. I know she has a recipe for scrapple, and it doesn't have any undesirable pork parts in it!

Truth Thursday. I'm a teacher and the end of the year is hard. Kids bring you treats, teachers bring treats, faculty meetings have treats, the union tries to bribe you with treats. I'm thinking about switching jobs which is stressful and if I stay we are getting a new principal which is stressful.
I'm a stress eater.
I have been having a hard time with eating I've been snacking way too much but I am happy to say I'm staying within my daily calories (not my goal calories) but at least I shouldn't gain weight. I feel like for the last 4 weeks I've been on track and that I'll be able to have a good summer. I just need to make it through next Friday.
I keep telling myself being fat is stressful too. Trying to be sexy for my husband at 200+ pounds is stressful and that I need to be mindful. Today is the real test it is the faculty meeting with lunch provided and s'mores.
The truth is I control what goes in my mouth.8 -
Thursday Truth- I leave on vacay tomorrow very early and I have a really busy day today so I doubt that I will be making the best choices and getting to the gym, but then that's pretty much how my week has gone, so I join you @Nikion901 and @jam5660 in the fess up to not living up to my own expectations and trying to cover it up with lies, lies, lies! LOL The truth is that my sodium is still out of whack and that is my own fault as I am the chef. I am the one that eats a bite while I am weighing out stuff. I am that one that reaches for the unsalted cashews but ends up eating way too many, because I'm tired and need to go to bed instead of mindless chewing up lots of calories while I do something "important", no the IMPORTANT thing is NOT TO DO THAT! I took my diuretic this morning and I will try to wait it out to weigh in before I eat but it may be another pass week. I won't be weighing in next week most likely because I will be away on vacay. So we will see the fifth of June when I go for my yearly physical what the final verdict is for the 12 months that have passed, and the 11 months that I have been here at MFP!
