WOMEN AGES 50+ FOR AUGUST 2017

It was my husband's birthday today. The ride we did on the weekend was sort of part of the celebration. We make some attempt to ride our ages in miles on or near our birthdays. It's kind of a cyclist tradition. So the ride on the weekend was his age plus some for good measure.
Unfortunately, we're both doing battle with a bit of a cold that's going around this part of the world ... and tired from the weekend ... so I brought home some cakes which I picked up on my way home from university and a card, and that was that. We will do something special later when we're feeling a bit better.
Meanwhile, today was my work + university day. Lots of walking!
I had a quiz worth 5% of my total mark in the tutorial (computer lab) and had been up quite late last night studying for it. Fortunately it wasn't nearly as hard as I thought it was going to be.
Then I had a couple hours off between the tutorial and the lecture, so I spent that time trying to download the student version of Oracle onto my little laptop. My head wasn't quite in it, so after waiting an hour for the download to complete, I realised I had missed a step and had to do it all over again. Brilliant! Oh well ... got it done, I think.
I napped for a while when I got home ... needed that!
And the evening has been homework.2 -
Tere Happy yesterday birthday! Thanks for the prayer and I will be thinking of you here.
I have never heard of nor seen a poteroo(?) but will have my boy help me look it up online. Educational moment!
I can jump on the scale and see it is lower than when I started so I actually feel sort of woo-hoo about that. (I can not actually read the scale though as the marks are too blurry.) Yesterday's roast was GOOD! And of course, tons of leftovers. Sort of problematic-there are lots of things I could eat but I can not get the kid to indulge in anything much. He only had milk for breakfast and I know they won't be fed at his camp and then he wants to swim so will not eat when I pick him up either. I think I have a lunchable I can take and threaten him into eating it in the car. But then I think high-sodium, not fresh, and not really cheese. Likely I will end up stopping at Chik-Fi-Let--he will eat their chicken tenders and then play and I can read. Hmm, a plan emerges...0 -

Actually potoroo (I spelled it wrong earlier). It looks sort of like a large rat/rabbit thing ... but is a marsupial. The ones we have here in Tasmania are the long-nosed variety.

Yesterday was I acknowledged my 59th birthday! Had a really quiet day – still having a little wheeze going on but expect that to be cleared up by tomorrow. DH and I went to the movies and that was it. Plan to celebrate next Saturday at a favorite restaurant with some friends. Tried to put on some shoes DH bought me a few months ago but could not manage the heels.
Happy Birthday!!
(and I have trouble with heels too ... arthritis)

Had to share - our soldier daughter was promoted to Sergeant last week. Our grandson, Tyler, is looking up at her, granddaughter Haley is in her other grandma, Stephanie's arms. Tyler's six now, and Haley's two and a half (she's going to be tall).

Back from our trip to Copenhagen. We walked into town and I got the shuttle bus back, but DH walked back!!!!! Had a lovely time on the regular water taxi instead of paying for the tourist one. Then went to eat in the Royal Library. Great Danish sandwiches and half the price of the harbour restaurants. It is a very expensive. city. . Had a great time though.
As we leave port there will be drinks and an orchestra on deck.
Tonight is the Elvis tribute act.

Tere: Happy 59th, you sweet young thing!
Anne from Rochester: Welcome to a great group. :flowerforyou:
Dana: Several years ago a drug addict fell asleep on the railroad tracks that run through our county. He was killed when the train came by in the night. It was a sad situation for everyone but I never thought about how it might affect the engineer of the train. It was certainly not the engineer's fault.
Heather: I love to hear about your adventures. Enjoy the Elvis tribute.
The carpenter is working on our upper banister today. The screws that fastened it to the wall pulled right out so he's going to put a face board there and will anchor the handrail to it. It gets a workout from DH who holds fast to help himself with balance.
Our air is hazy from smoke again today. I think this haze is from the British Columbia fires, but the other day it was joined by haze from Montana & Wyoming fires. It certainly helps me appreciate our usually excellent air quality. This may be a long smokey summer.

Hi! I'm 51 (in a week) and have struggled with my weight since I was at least 16. I have been mostly successful, with the help of Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, the Diet Center...and now MFP and Meltdown Challenge. I have never gotten really really heavy because my career had a maximum weight and I could be called in for a random weigh in at any time. So...a lot of fear...I used to have to weigh in backwards because I would get so nervous about what the scale would reveal. I retired in 2014 and have steadily gained since then. I am back on track now. I like the idea of putting some goals out there and then seeing how I do!
So...I don't think in steps...I think in miles and number of workouts per week.
Goal 1) work out four times a week, at least one of those being weights
Goal 2) lose three pounds
Goal 3) finish shredding or burning the boxes of office stuff that are not required any longer
Goal 4) refinish the kitchen table
These are goals (like the table) I had at the beginning of the summer but haven't touched. Writing them down, I hope, will get me motivated.5 -

Well ... this time I DID lose my posts ... that's OK, I need to do something around here.
Allie - Been thinking about you all morning! Hope things went well this morning.
This morning it is nice outside; I'd really like to find something to do out there while it isn't so hot. But, it feels so good.

Yep. My eyes were burning/watering in LA last week from smog. I woke up this morning in Oregon, and my eyes are burning/watering from smoke. The moon was really awesome looking last night, however -- yellowish/orange.
Tere: Happy Birthday!!!

~ Ladies - you don't have to wait any longer - the date was a HUGE success - many more to come I believe!! We spent 26hrs together with about 3hrs of that 'sort of' watching each other sleep and giggling over who snores when we were both so tired we couldn't stand it. But, then another thought would come up and the conversation would start again...we ended up (after lots of walking and dancing on Fremont Street) on top of Sunrise Mtn overlooking the valley watching the city lights - we both dozed off more than once sitting in the car. Slight breeze, windows open, lots of laughter = best "drive in movie" I've been to EVER!
We woke to the sun barely taking the darkness and started the day with more walking and coffee/breakfast at a local diner I frequent. Our date changed many times from what was planned to being completely spontaneous and I had a BLAST! I'm normally not one to tolerate someone who cancels, reschedule attempts, many changes, etc. This guy's different! After walking and dancing all night, then falling asleep in awkward positions in the front seat of the car, my body was sore and needed more walking to stretch. So, we went to the Forum Shops at Caesers Palace and walked more along with sat a lot to people watch after the yummy/healthy breakfast.
Then we went to see Dark Tower (HIGHLY recommend it) for an afternoon matinee at the Palms casino, followed by a light dinner and then returned home. REALLY cool part = he wants to gain about 10 pounds, and is MORE than willing to have my leftovers and learn more about my nutrition needs...very inspired by my recent accomplishments, and is not even the slightest judgmental of any choices I made. He's not a health nut at all, but very physically fit. He plays a lot of basketball and golf, two of the sports I'm actually fairly good at...well, basketball = I play a "MEAN game of HORSE"!! He can't wait to find out why my son shared that with him. Oh, and how my son ended up meeting him was because I got the "Mom HELP! My car won't shift out of park" text message...he had it figured out by the time we got there, but Mr. Handsome got to meet my son as a result.
They have a few interests in common it seems, and basketball is one of them. My son revealed to him that I had a full ride scholarship to UofO for playing basketball...something I don't normally reveal, because I dropped out before I finished the first semester of my freshman year and lost all my scholarships. We talked a lot about this, and my "shame" of this failure didn't even phase him! Not the normal response...
Next date has been confirmed for Friday night - a wine and canvas paint thing...I don't drink, but I've been assured by him it's not necessary or required when attending these things. We are painting "monochrome bonzai type trees with pink flowers" - so I asked him if he meant cherry trees, and he had a puzzled look on his face...I promise, I did NOT try to take charge and look it up - I'm just gonna go with it since I've never been!!
Thank you to all who've been interested enough to ask/comment. What happens from here is anyone's guess, but as always, I'm taking it one day at a time...

My yard work this morning was moving rocks away from the area under where the deck was removed as part of the preparation for the concrete pad that will be laid there. It was a good way to get steps and do some light weight lifting. It is still very smoky here so I didn't stay out as long as I would have in clean air.2

Well today was a bust again !!!! His attorney husband was in ER with asthma attack.wanted to reschedule to 1 pm this afternoon or move out a week.to say my lawyer was pisse- was an understatement.said that his attorney is a hot mess...so have to go back next monday.and my attorney will ask for counsel fee if she does this again.4

Allison: Stay strong. Tom has evidently hired a lawyer with moral fiber that matches his own. they may be following the "delay and annoy" strategy. :grumble:

Alison ~ How frustrating for you! Stay strong!
Lisa ~ Congrats to your daughter. She is pretty.
Had to take the Pom to the vet today. He is limping terribly on one back leg. The Doc decided it was arthritis and gave him some sort of medicine that's supposed to help the pain. They also did a full blood workup because his coat is flaky and looks awful and he is overweight. Thinking it might be a thyroid problem. $300 But, we love him dearly and just hope we can get him the help he needs.

Had a 1.4 lb loss at TOPS today. We had a good meeting. We have a regional "rally" in October to celebrate this past year (Sept. to Aug.) They always have contests for best center piece, name tag, outfit, etc. Our chapter is very competitive and likes to win. The theme this year is "How the Waist was Won". We are going to be can-can (saloon) girls. Think it will be original and fun! One of our members went to a beer fest recently and has these small beer cans that hang on a beaded necklace. We'll bling them up, make tutus to go over out long pants (for coverage and comfort), solid colored t-shirts, head pieces and feather boas. I'll let you know how these projects proceed. (Michele, I wish you could come to TN and help with this. YOu are so crafty, lady.)
Love, love, love the precious baby pics, flower shots, and Copenhagen picture.
Welcome new folks. Stick with us.
Someone mentioned Sylvia. I really miss her. Also, has Vicki been here lately?

Dorrie - so thrilled for you and glad it went well! I bet you are the type of person that knows pretty quickly if the guy is NOT your type or if he's someone worth spending time getting to know. Glad he could meet your son too!
Lisa - lovely daughter and grandkids - congrats to her! Very proud that she's in our military!
Machka - glad you finally got Oracle downloaded. I'm very proud of you and other ladies on this list who are still taking classes! Your marsupials are so interesting.... fascinating to see the different types of animals on each continent. Did Australia and NZ ever have any mastodon or buffalo/bovine native critters that you know of?
Toni - congrats on your loss! That rally sounds like fun, can't wait to see pictures of "How the Waist was Won"
Katla - great that the bannister is being fixed. I depend on them more and more when I go up and down stairs whether I need them or not. Hang in there....cool, clear air is coming!
Allie - how frustrating, I know you just want it to be over. Hope things come together quickly so you can get on with your life. Is there some kind of deadline on this - has any kind of court date been set yet?
Barbie - it's warm here but looks like it's going to not get up beyond 85 today. I guess we have the smoke/bad air quality to thank for that. I keep looking at the forecast for next week... high 70's with a small possibility of rain thrown in. YIPPEE!!
DH talked to a landscaping crew working next door and hired them to haul off several loads of branches and tree trimmings he'd been accumulating for the past several years, hoping to someday have a nice burn pile. Well, the burn pile would have reached to the clouds! So they are out there loading it right now. Kind of spendy but worth it - don't know how else we'd have gotten rid of them except rent a chipper and DH is in no shape to load in branches for several days.
So I went to the physical therapist this morning. My neck is totally out of whack and has been for quite a while. He did several "releases" using the Johnson Strain/Counterstrain which I am a fan of. I'm pretty sore and have the ice pack handy. I'll need to do neck exercises several times a day for a while. Will continue with my strength training regiment, he said instead of increasing weights I can do more reps/sets for right now. He'll take me next door to the gym I go to and show me how to use the machines.
That's the update for now.

Dorrie- sounds like you had a wonderful time.. so glad..
Yes it is frustrating,no no date set.. but if they keep the stall tactics up Tom will be paying more to my attorney than he wants too. And to me, it only makes him look dumb. Ces le vie ... only lost about 1/2 from work so not bad.. Tom lost a few hrs...
My friends band is playing tomorrow night down at the riverfront and wee will be going to that after work,,,. Don't know if I will be watching Faith as they are sending her to rehab for PT..having some sleepy time tea and trying to decompress.3
