Could you resize it? Do you know anyone that sows?
Maybe, but I'm talking about needing to take out at least half the fabric in some items. I'd had a custom kilt made before the weight loss. After the loss I had it retailored (not altered) and you wouldn't believe how much fabric they removed.
So I've got a spot on my dresser where I stack up clothes that don't fit and when it gets too high I make a run to the charity shop. And I keep an eye out for clothing sales and replace an item or two at a time instead of all at once.
As somebody that sews- if it is more than a size it really becomes a hassle. I have altered a few items that I really really love but honestly it has to be something special to do that. It is a lot of work for little gain and quite frankly a pain in the proverbial even if I'd get paid for it.
I'd rather sew something new and donate the stuff to somebody in need (and I have)
This is me. I HATE doing alterations.3 -

That makes perfect sense. I went from wearing slightly snug 34-inch waist pants and size large shirts to loose 30-inch waist pants (you wouldn't believe how hard it is to find 29-inch waist pants) and size small shirts. I'd looked into having some of them altered and was quoted prices that were higher than just buying new clothes. So to the charity shops.... (And it really hurt giving up some of those items, but other people needed them more than me.) Fortunately Dillard's has frequent mega-sales on their men's clothes.

What nobody told me about losing weight:
1. HOLY HORMONES, BATMAN! (No. Seriously. Life is a freakishly crazy rollercoaster right now, and I'm only around 35-40% done. And I'm not talking about "shark week." Though that is definitely a great name for it now!)
2. Clothing fit is not going to be there on anything but stretchy items such as running pants. My running pants (which I actually use for triking) are the only "decent fitting" pants I own. Sure, I have pants that stay up, and have a few more sizes I stored away for the eventuality of getting into this thing for real, but the fit is so off due to the different shape I am at these weights versus my body composition before at these weights, as well as #3.
3. THE POUCH. Pooch. Whatever you want to call it. It's now a "soft W" when I'm wearing pants, and causes a ton of issues for me in water workouts, unless I wear "control garments." Honestly, at this point I couldn't care less about the girls (although I have to admit shrinkage there does help reduce pain!). I want this thing gone like yesterday, and I know that's totally not going to happen.
4. That I would get a new pet peeve. I can't stand BMI talk anymore, particularly relating to end goals, etc. I will probably be "overweight" on the BMI scale when I'm done, but strengthening my body for the long haul is so much more important. I'll happily be "overweight" for the rest of my life.
5. That I would actually find myself preferring to use a food scale for measurements. Once I got the hang of it and learned a few tricks, I LOVE using the food scale!
6. That I would gain a silly new secret habit. When I'm at home and I really, really enjoy something I made, I lick the utensils and plate/bowl clean. Gosh darn it, I weighed everything and got it programmed in -- I've earned this!
Thank you all for your comments! I've really enjoyed reading through all of this thread over the last few weeks! Great laughs, insights, and inspiration abound!41 -

I can't wear juniors clothing because it has holes in it or the shirts are cropped tops and I work at a jail. And I'm not a petite, they fit weird. No one told me I would have to start buying bigger clothes and getting them altered. Thank God I'm transitioning to maintenance now. I just feel like the women of MFP should band together and form a clothing line that makes sense for women who are losing weight.
It's more of an annoyance, really.
Go to the juniors department at nicer department stores. Much more conservative styles, including nice blouses and actual trousers, not just denims. Also, for a nice pair of demins go online Levi's sizes thiers by waist size and the 501 line are 100% cotton and fit true to size (ie NOT skinny jeans) (Macy's, Nordstrom's etc).
This! I was going to say, "where the heck are you shopping". Any nice department stores are going to have nice jr-sized clothing. Heck! Even Kohls has good options. Before I was a nurse, I was a purchasing agent and had the cutest clothes. Cute skirts, cute blouses... I couldn't fit anything that wasn't in the Jr-department.
Of course, I weighed maybe 110 lbs @ 5'4".4 -
Nobody warned me about drunken weighloss face/ugly weighloss face. Just am in one of those awkward spots where my weigh loss shows in part of my face and fat Craig shows in the other. The result I look hammered stone cold sober;)17

omg! this is what is happening to me - thought it was just a poor photo!
I look really gaunt on parts of my cheeks when running. Looks horrible - hoping that it stops soon!2 -

Seriously? I have size 7 (women's) feet, my husband has size 12 (men's) feet and we interchange socks all the time... are you sure they didn't just wear out and lose their elastic?
I shrank a full shoe size! And my old feet/calves were bigger: they stretched out my socks.7 -
I'm back! This might gross some out but...Today I pleasantly discovered that acne under my arms and around my bra is gone. I think this is because I've lost weight PLUS eating differently. But mostly loss because now I'm not sweaty and fat and nothing is rubbing. Lol So far everything about losing weight for me is a huge plus. I love MFP!34

The biggest thing no one told me about weight loss, well actually calorie counting I suppose, is that it would hugely improve my money management. It took me a couple months in to realize that if I was tracking every calorie, then I should be tracking every penny just as closely. I got a tracking app for that and all the same principles that made my weight loss successful helped turn my finances around too.116

Really cool ^^!!1

I've lost about 65 pounds -
No-one told me just HOW expensive it would be, literally not a single item of clothing OR shoes fit
No-one told me my personality would go from 'eh' to feelin myself 99% of the time
No-one told me how many people would ask me how I did it, only to refuse my answer of eat less move more
No-one told me how much I'd look at other people in my life, and strangers, and suddenly see them differently, respecting the physically fit now knowing the work they put in, and wishing I could help the obese, if only45 -

This! I'm 50lbs down, and just realising that very little fits.9 -
No one told me that my bra would fit flat across my back and around my sides. I just discovered this morning that I no longer have rolls of fat spilling out above and below my properly-fitting bra. So much more comfortable.38

What nobody told me about weight loss
The mental games that it plays with your mind when you first. And that I need to know who I am as a person besides just my weight to overcome that nasty voice that send destructive guilt.15 -
It's crazy how I still feel like I haven't accomplished much some days (even though I have lost almost 50lbs so far) and other days I am like, Who is that hot lady there?!?!? It is hard to motivate myself on the rough days- that when habit has started to kick in. I end up driving to the gym practically on autopilot after work that it just happens and I am like well, I am already here...lol24

This is my favorite thread of all time. I'm so glad it keeps coming back around.
No one told me that clothes can be comfortable. I used to come home and immediately put on sweat pants and take off my bra. My skinny roommate always wore her jeans around the house, which I thought was SO uncomfortable.
I came home yesterday and ate dinner and hung around with my cat.... and when I went to put on sweats, I realized that I didn't NEED to. I didn't even WANT to.43 -

Whaaaat?! Girl I will always take off my bra when I get home. No matter how much I weigh.33 -
I've been reading this thread from the beginning since shortly after I began my journey. Admittedly, I didn't have as much to lose as many of the posters here. But, I'm down 20lbs since April, and have at least another 10lbs to go.
- No one told me when I started counting calories that I would actually start to care about my body composition, too. I *like* strength training!! (An aside - My coworker was asking me recently about what I had been doing to lose weight. I told her MFP, and fallen in love with weight lifting and how excited I am to have my own weight lifting gloves. Her response was, "tell me more about the gloves. I don't understand. Do they have weights sewn INTO them??" )
- I'd seen it mentioned here before, but didn't think it would happen to me because I didn't have much to lose, but, man! LUMPY! Like, my legs, while the inches are going down, they're not the prettiest of gams right now. Glad the seasons are changing and I can wear more long pants!
- As others have also mentioned, no one told me I'd become the "expert" or a "mentor" for others. I have another coworker who's gotten into MFP with me, and we're working on Lunch-shares, and I'm teaching her the importance of a balanced meal, and what the different nutrients (or lack thereof) mean to our bodies.
I have to just keep echoing what everyone else has said here. It's life-transforming in ways you never expect! This has been an awesome thread to keep checking on, encouraging me along the way! Keep it up, everyone!24 -

Lol, I'll leave on the bra, but dang straight I'm in those sweatpants immediately - my whole life, off with the outside clothes and into beloved baggy, wrinkled comfortable sweats or similar (too hot for sweats in tx summer) as soon as I get home.8 -
A couple that bother me a bit (I know I'm the pessimist lol)
- for me personally I still have days where I feel I look the same I did when I was 35 pounds heavier... I never really considered that before.
- how it gives people you barely know the "right" to comment on your body.
- gaining a couple pounds is a much bigger deal to me now then it ever has been and trying not to freak out about it.
- but I do love that I can wear just a t shirt and jeans now instead of the tight tank top under the top to smooth things out and the cardigan on top of that to hide any back bumps or side bumps. So that's a definite bonus26 -

No one tells you that if you're tall and more slender it's REALLY REALLY REALLLY REALLY hard to find clothes that fit. Like, insanely hard. My local stores have stopped carrying tall pants in any regular sizes (4-16) whatsoever. There's a petites section for short women. There's a juniors section for short women. While the womens' section is also for short women, you can make up for some of the lack of length by going up in size. But not so much in the regular department.
I wear a size 6 L now, and I really need that extra length.. but criminy heck is it hard to find.13 -
The gentleman in line behind me at the grocery store insisted on paying for my groceries a few days ago, and I wonder if my sad, baggy clothes from 70 pounds ago had anything to do with it...33

Feeling your pain, Sister! I have no idea where to buy pants now. It's actually a real problem! Theoretically I could shop on-line, but with women's clothes being sized so inconsistently I have no idea what size to order. Grrrr...6 -
I've become more graceful. I feel lighter when I sit down and stand back up - that still freaks me out. The muscle tone: having legs that are shaped, seeing my calves, or my little four pack. Being able to fit into clothes that I actually like instead of just covering myself up. My energy is more consistent. I look forward to being around others more. Gosh I spent so much time hiding myself and never really noticed it.25

OMG when I started reading this comment I thought it was going to be a case of you getting hit on, like a guy insisting on buying you a drink ... except at the grocery store. That's so awkward and yet so fun at the same time, and lovely of the gentleman! I guess 'homeless' is the new 'little black dress'!11 -

I find that I'm more disciplined in other areas of my life too. I even keep on top of housework better now. And yesterday I filled up my gas tank when it was only half empty! Usually i wait until the light starts flashing lol21 -
that I would find the enthusiasm and energy to go out and socialise more now that I am feeling more confident.17

- How much post like this really help!
- How much water you have to drink to help you lose weight
- How skinny people will tell you wow you lost weight and then throw in that they need to lose weight too and then eat donuts in your face.
- How looking at others like yourself who lost weight really can motivate you24 -
@tomteboda My sister is a 4/6 tall and she lives in Banana Republic and J Crew. Maybe try ordering online and returning what doesn't fit?3
